Are ilaje people Yoruba? The answer is hit and miss. Some claim their ancestry to Benin, but have been greatly Yoribanized over time. A bit like how Igbo speaking Anioma or Ikwerre view themselves.

Also, there is a lot of intermarriage with the Ijaw people. Ondo state has indigenous Ijaw. The state TV has news in the local Ijaw language

There has been clashes between the Ondo Ijaw and Yoruba people in the past, so clashes between Ilaje and Akwa Ibom people should take no one by surprise

Just to set the records straight, the Ilajes are a sub ethnic group of the Yorubas just like you have the Ijebus and others. Just because Ondo state happen to have Ijaw as a minority group doesn’t mean ilajes are ijaws! Just like every other Yoruba group have their own unique dialect so does the Ilajes have the ilaje dialect. Point is, it is never a miss hit as you have opined up there, let’s not be selective on issues like this. It is understandable that there are intermarriages between the Ijaws and Ilajes reasons been that geographically we are positioned as Neighbours and there is nothing bad in that. I come in peace ✌️
