China has ordered the closure of the US consulate in the south-western city of Chengdu, in a tit-for-tat escalation between the two countries. China said the move was a "necessary response" to the US, which ordered China to close its consulate in Houston earlier this week. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the US decision was taken because China was "stealing" intellectual property. Tensions have been rising between the US and China over several key issues. President Donald Trump's administration has clashed repeatedly with Beijing over trade and the coronavirus pandemic, as well as China's imposition of a controversial new security law in Hong Kong. China's move came hours after Mr Pompeo hardened his tone further in a speech on Thursday at the library of former President Richard Nixon, whose 1972 China visit heralded a period of improved relations. "Today, China is increasingly authoritarian at home, and more aggressive in its hostility to freedom everywhere else," Mr Pompeo said. "The free world must triumph over this new tyranny." What has China said? China's foreign ministry said the closure was a "legitimate and necessary response to the unreasonable actions taken by the United States". "The current situation between China and the United States is something China does not want to see, and the US bears all responsibility for that." China gave the US till Monday to close the consulate in Chengdu, according to the editor of China's Global Times. The mission, established in 1985 and currently having more than 200 staff - 150 hired locally - is seen as strategically important because it allows the US to gather information on the autonomous region of Tibet, where there has been long-running pressure for independence. With its industry and growing services sector, Chengdu also is seen by the US as providing opportunities for exports of agricultural products, cars and machinery. Why did the US order the Chinese consulate to close? On Tuesday, the US government ordered China to close its consulate in Houston, Texas, by Friday. The move came after unidentified individuals were filmed burning paper in bins in the building's courtyard. Mr Pompeo accused China of stealing "not just American intellectual property... but European intellectual property too... costing hundreds of thousands of jobs". "We are setting out clear expectations for how the Chinese Communist Party is going to behave. And when they don't, we're going to take actions," he said. The Chinese consulate in Houston was one of five in the US, along with the embassy in Washington DC. It was not clear why it was singled out. China's foreign ministry spokeswoman said the reasons given by the US for closing the consulate were "unbelievably ridiculous". Hua Chunying urged the US to reverse its "erroneous decision", or China would "react with firm countermeasures". In a further US move, four Chinese nationals have been charged with visa fraud for allegedly lying about their membership of China's armed forces - three are under arrest while the FBI is seeking to arrest the fourth, who is said to be in China's San Francisco consulate. Why is there tension between China and the US? There are a number of things at play. US officials have blamed China for the global spread of Covid-19. More specifically, President Trump has alleged, without evidence, that the virus originated from a Chinese laboratory in Wuhan. And, in unsubstantiated remarks, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesman said in March that the US military might have brought the virus to Wuhan. The US and China have also been locked in a tariff war since 2018. US-China trade war in 300 words Mr Trump has long accused China of unfair trading practices and intellectual property theft, but in Beijing there is a perception that the US is trying to curb its rise as a global economic power. China's new law: Why is Hong Kong worried? Trump hits China with order on Hong Kong trade The US has also imposed sanctions on Chinese politicians who it says are responsible for human rights violations against Muslim minorities in Xinjiang. China is accused of mass detentions, religious persecution and forced sterilisation of Uighurs and others. Beijing denies the allegations and has accused the US of "gross interference" in its domestic affairs. What about Hong Kong? China's imposition of a sweeping security law there is also a source of tension with the US and the UK, which ruled the territory until 1997. In response, the US last week revoked Hong Kong's special trading status, which allowed it to avoid tariffs imposed on Chinese goods by the US. The US and UK see the security law as a threat to the freedoms Hong Kong has enjoyed under a 1984 agreement between China and the UK - before sovereignty reverted to Beijing. The UK has angered China by outlining a route to UK citizenship for nearly three million Hong Kong residents. China responded by threatening to stop recognising a type of British passport - BNO - held by many of those living in Hong Kong. https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-china-53522640

Tunde Braimoh, a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly representing Kosofe Constituency II, is dead. He passed on Friday morning. A source close to the family told DAILY POST that he fell ill some days ago. “He told his aides that he wasn’t feeling well. It’s not even up to a week. But we still don’t know if it’s coronavirus,” he said. The deceased was the Chairman, Committee on Information, Security and Strategy. Braimoh earlier served as Chairman, Committee on Judiciary, Petitions and LASEIC. The politician is survived by wife and children. Tributes have started pouring in honour of the former Kosofe Local Government Chairman. Samiat Abolanle Bada, Chairperson, Ikosi Isheri LCDA, in her reaction, lamented that “Big daddy is gone”. In her condolence, she said it was hard for her to announce the death of “our leader, mentor and a political juggernaut”. Bada stressed that Kosofe politics without Braimoh “is a cold world of ice, freezing me to death like fish stark naked. I can’t but doubt my hearing, my breath seizes”. She noted that the demise “is not just a lonely death but a string that rubs on many as victims. As a bearer of law, you stood as the voice of the voiceless. Many are living testimonies to your life touching impacts”. The LCDA head said Braimoh’s leadership in Kosofe exemplifies the dexterity of his seasoned administrative prowess and uncommon resourcefulness in bringing good governance to the people at the grassroot. Bada recalled that late lawmaker’s hands are always outstretched to the poor and that his doors are always flooded by beneficiaries. “Every eyes filled with sadness and sorrow were receiving succor with the cheerfulness of your face. We love you but the Almighty loves you more than we do”, she added. Braimoh passed on barely four weeks after the Senator representing Lagos East District, Bayo Osinowo died. https://dailypost.ng/2020/07/10/breaking-lagos-lawmaker-tunde-braimoh-is-dead/

(Reuters) - China would "be happy to" participate in trilateral arms control negotiations with the United States and Russia, but only if the United States were willing to reduce its nuclear arsenal to China's level, a senior Chinese diplomat said on Wednesday. Washington has repeatedly called for China to join in trilateral negotiations to extend New START, a flagship nuclear arms treaty between the United States and Russia that is due to expire in February next year. Fu Cong, head of the arms control department of Chinese foreign ministry, reiterated to reporters in Beijing on Wednesday that China has no interest in joining the negotiation with former Cold War-era superpowers, given that the U.S. nuclear arsenal is about 20 times the size of China's. "I can assure you, if the U.S. says that they are ready to come down to the Chinese level, China would be happy to participate the next day," he said. "But actually, we know that's not going to happen." Fu asserted that for the United States, asking China to participate in trilateral negotiations is "nothing but a ploy to divert attention" and an excuse for the United States to walk away from the New START extension. "The real purpose is to get rid of all restrictions and have a free hand in seeking military superiority over any adversary, real or imagined," said Fu. Fu maintained China is not "shying away from the international nuclear disarmament process" and is prepared to discuss within the framework of the United Nations Security Council's five permanent members all issues related to the reduction of nuclear risks. Harvard University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) announced Wednesday morning they have jointly filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration over new rules barring international students from living in the U.S. while taking online courses. On Monday, a division of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced that it will not permit international students on F-1 visas to take a full online course load in the fall while studying in the U.S. The lawsuit seeks a temporary restraining order and preliminary and permanent injunctive relief to bar the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and ICE from enforcing such regulations on international students, reported student newspaper The Harvard Crimson. MIT President L. Rafael Reif, in an email sent to the MIT community, said: "The announcement disrupts our international students' lives and jeopardizes their academic and research pursuits. ICE is unable to offer the most basic answers about how its policy will be interpreted or implemented." Harvard University President Lawrence S. Bacow said the new order's cruelty is "surpassed only by its recklessness." "We will pursue this case vigorously so that our international students – and international students at institutions across the country – can continue their studies without the threat of deportation," Bacow wrote in an email to affiliates. Harvard has already announced plans to move all coursework in the fall semester online amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. https://news.cgtn.com/news/2020-07-08/Harvard-MIT-sue-federal-govt-over-rule-barring-international-students-RXQiT1BVaE/index.html

CHINA on Wednesday defended the World Health Organization (WHO) and lashed out at the U.S. decision to withdraw from the U.N. body. Foreign ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian said the move was “another demonstration of the U.S. pursuing unilateralism, withdrawing from groups and breaking contracts.” WHO is “the most authoritative and professional international institution in the field of global public health security,” Zhao said at a daily briefing. The U.S. departure from the organization “undermines the international anti-epidemic efforts, and in particular has a serious negative impact on developing countries in urgent need of international support,” Zhao said. The Trump administration formally notified the U.N. on Monday of its withdrawal from WHO, although the pullout won’t take effect until next year. That means it could be reversed by a new administration or if circumstances change. Former Vice President Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, said he would reverse the decision on his first day in office if elected. President Donald Trump has harshly criticized WHO over its response to the coronavirus pandemic and accused it of bowing to Chinese influence. Trump said in a White House announcement that Chinese officials “ignored” their reporting obligations to WHO and pressured the organization to mislead the public about an outbreak that has now killed more than 130,000 Americans. The move was immediately assailed by health officials and critics of the administration, including numerous Democrats who said it would cost the U.S. influence in the global arena while undermining an important institution that is leading vaccine development efforts and drug trials to address the coronavirus. The withdrawal notice was sent to U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday and will take effect in a year, on July 6, 2021. The U.S. is WHO’s largest donor and provides it with more than $450 million per year, but owes about $200 million in current and past dues. Those financial obligations must be met before a U.S. withdrawal can be finalized. AP https://www.zbcnews.co.zw/china-defends-who-lashes-out-at-us-move-to-withdraw/

In Brazil, the nation’s far-right president, Jair Bolsonaro, has tested positive for the coronavirus after months of downplaying the severity of the pandemic. Bolsonaro recently developed a high fever and a cough. Brazil is the second-hardest-hit nation in the world after the United States, with more than 65,000 deaths and 1.6 million confirmed cases. Bolsonaro said Tuesday that he is taking hydroxychloroquine, even though it has been proven ineffective against COVID-19. President Jair Bolsonaro: “Here, I’m taking my third dose of hydroxychloroquine. I’m feeling very well. I was feeling a little ill on Sunday. I was bad on Monday. Today, Tuesday, I feel better than on Saturday. So, in all certainty, it’s working.” Brazil-based journalist Glenn Greenwald noted that Bolsonaro’s announcement comes as the country is on day 53 of having no health minister. The last two were fired or resigned within 30 days of each other for endorsing science. The grandmother of Brazil’s first lady Michelle Bolsonaro is also suffering from COVID-19. She was recently transferred to an ICU unit and is reportedly intubated. https://www.democracynow.org/2020/7/8/headlines/brazils_official_coronavirus_death_toll_tops_65_000_as_jair_bolsonaro_tests_positive
