Great piece by Smartgrid btw , Na noble laureate we suppose give you for this thread and nairaland sef suppose put this thread up in it's hall of fame because i doubt if a single recruitment has ever spanned to this number of pages . I read your comment but I do not agree with them. Govt has put in place may initiatives and support for farmers and one of them is this anti smuggling activities of Govt. The people looking for short cut by involving themselves in smuggling foreign rice into the country can involve themselves into something legitimate. What they are doing is an affront on the laws of Nigeria. My prayer is that those who chose to involve in this activities will continued to be caught and they lose their investments. One day, they will run out option and learn to engage in legitimate business.
Their activity is an act of sabotage to the efforts of Govt and to those who engage in rice farming. As I wrote earlier, every country do whatever they had to do to protect their local producers against those who wants to make their country a dumping ground, while its citizens are largely unemployed. Nigeria Govt is protecting local farmers from foreign and unpatriotic Nigerians.

To summarize my point to you again, Anti smuggling activities should be tied to its illegitimacy not sabotage. Basic economics, Smuggling of rice into the country should not affect the local farmers. If conditions are right, the local rice should be cheaper than the foreign and there will be a paradigm shift to the local....and the smuggling business will not be profitable.

Where do one begins to explain these things to you as you got it all wrong. If local rice is more expensive, that is a pointer to serious citizens of the economic opportunty in local rice production. Please spend time researching issues rather than using it to express your sentiments and bias. No serious Govt will open their eyes and allow its country become a dumping ground for all manner of foreign goods that can be produced locally and its citizens are highly unemployed. This is not a sentimental issue but a common sensical one.

The production and more importantly processing of our local rice will determine the price. If there are favourable conditions, the price of local rice should be lesser than the price plus the transportation cost of foreign rice.

What initiatives are in place to encourage rice production? are there stratagic mills to buy the produce from the farmers, are social amenities available? (power trransport ) etc. Is there any investment in technology for the sector? Go and read about what the US did with their farmers and corn. A staple like rice should be accorded its respect and there should be government funded mills that buy from the farmers and incentives paid directly to farmers.

There should also be considerable amount invested in studies and technologies, and high yield seeds and best practices passed down to the farmers. The quantity of rice consumed in Nigeria warrants government to invest in its local production.

Calling the smugglers that see a business opportunity due to economic lapses saboteurs is wrong. Not that I support smuggling though.

Which one is economic saboteurs? Shouldn't local production be cheaper and hence discourage importation? If the local production and processing is working, why are they still going through all this stress to import and smuggle at a higher rate. The government is the saboteur here for not providing the enabling conditions for local production and processing.
