Nahum777: who is talking doesnt matterWho is talking, and what he is talking about, is of the utmost importance here. Context clues are crucial. How do you know what is being said, if you don’t know who is talking, or what it is about. It is important to know what is going on, so that what Eliphaz is saying makes sense. No Christ is not talking here. Nor is Job. What Eliphaz is saying to Job in this chapter is for his good, as well as ours. Nahum777: why dont you interpret the verse for us now. There are some parts of scripture that speak directly to us. They give us direction. Some parts, however, are not so direct. It is easy to get confused, if we do not know what is going on. Context is crucial in some instances. As is the case here. This is what I meant in an earlier thread, when I said that I read the scriptures like a book sometimes, and other times I do subject study. It is important to read cover to cover and to pick a subject. To help move things along, I will use the synopsis at the beginning of each chapter. In chapter 1 we find Job, a just and perfect man, who is blessed with great riches. Satan obtains permission from the Lord to tempt and try Job. (Satan believes he can turn Job against God) Job’s property and children are destroyed, and yet he praises and blesses the Lord. In chapter 2 Satan obtains permission from the Lord to afflict Job physically. Job is smitten with boils. Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar come to comfort him. In chapter 3 poor Job curses the circumstances of his birth. He asks, "Why died I not from the womb? Job says, “Oh why couldn’t I have died at birth?” Which brings us to chapter 4. Eliphaz reproves Job, asking such questions as, Are the righteous cut off? Shall a man be more pure than his maker? Note Eliphaz is asking Job a question. What is the question, and why is he asking it? Let’s look at the verses before 7. Job Chapter 4 1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said, Chapter 3 three is full of Job belly aching about the situation in which he finds himself. Finally in the last verse he says, (Job 3:26) I was not in safety, neither had I rest, neither was I quiet; yet trouble came. He is saying, “I went out to spread the word. Even when it was dangerous. I worked to the point of fatigue. I was not quite. I spread the word, like I was supposed to.” Now he says, “Yet here I am. All these terrible things have happened to me.” Take note, he is a righteous man yet he is afflicted. He is not being punished for anything. 2 If we assay to commune with thee, wilt thou be grieved? but who can withhold himself from speaking? Then Eliphaz says, “Dude, don’t be mad, but I gotta say something here.” 3 Behold, thou hast instructed many, and thou hast strengthened the weak hands. He goes on to say, “Your preaching has helping people gather strength.” 4 Thy words have upholden him that was falling, and thou hast strengthened the feeble knees. He continues to tell Job of how he has strengthened others with his words. 5 But now it is come upon thee, and thou faintest; it toucheth thee, and thou art troubled. Eliphaz throws Job’s words back at him by saying, “Now these bad things come upon you, and you fall apart. Dude, don’t be such a hypocrite.” 6 Is not this thy fear, thy confidence, thy hope, and the uprightness of thy ways? Some other scripture references and definitions can help us here. Confidence: Prov. 3:26 For the Lord shall be thy confidence, and shall keep thy foot from being taken. Uprightness: rightiousness Eliphaz says to Job, “You shouldn't be complaining. You should have faith in the Lord. You should have hope. You are a righteous man. Have no fear.” I'll be honest. I’m not completely sure of the interpretation of this particular verse. If someone has a different one, please feel free to jump in here. And here we are at the little verse that caused all the uproar… 7 Remember, I pray thee, who ever perished, being innocent? or where were the righteous cut off? Another cross reference might help here. 1 Cor. 10:13 13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it. Eliphaz is saying, “Dude, God will never tempt you beyond what you can bear. You are a righteous (innocent) man. Do you think you are going to die? He is only testing your faith. Have you seen any righteous man ever cut off? Now, if ever there were verses that coincide, somewhat, with what Obadiah is trying to say, 8-11 would be it. Except that Eliphaz is saying that the wicked will be destroyed. Job did nothing wrong. All these things that happened to him were to test his faith. The Lord was not punishing him for his bad deeds. He was a righteous man. I've been asked, "Why do bad things happen to good people." This is my answer, Satan has no reason to bother with the wicked. They belong to him already. It is the righteous, the ‘innocent’, that he concentrates his efforts on. |
obadiah777: dont hate the player. hate the game you createdAs I said, I did not create racism/descrimination, nor I do try to keep the legacy of hate alive. |
obadiah777: hehe how are ya mademoiselle texanomaly. thats just to remind you that this whole race thing started on your side. i didnt create the game, i am simply playing the game createdNo, but you are not opposed to promoting it. |
obadiah777: i do not wear skirtsIt was a joke Obadiah. Btw...a kilt is not woman's attire. They are made for men, although, we women look quite fetching in them. ![]() |
cexplorer: Please what is the hope of pensioners like me who was due for federal pension since 2005 but yet to be enrolled after series of verification and capturing exercises? What other practical steps can I take to get my pension arrears since 2005 paid to me?Speak to an attorney. Find out what your options are. I’m not sure about there, but the initial consultation is usually free here in the US. If you go to an attorney that is not familiar with this type of case, they can refer you to the right one. Good luck to you. ![]() |
First of all, how did this become a debate about whether God exists or not?
Africans are starving, you talking space program.
Logicboy03: Let us settle the basic problem of poverty first..,,Valid points plaetton: Good point.Wiping out all poverty is a bit unrealistic, but it is a good goal. plaetton: And most importantly, do you not think that perhaps there might be causal link between our lack of scientific curiosity and our inability to feed ourselves despite all our natural endowments? The lack of scientific curiosity is more likely the result of poor education. plaetton: Logicdude,See below... Logicboy03: What the hell are you talking about? plaetton: Thirdly, our homegrown leaders have, over the many decades since independence , shown that they neither have the vision, the smarts, nor even the will to alleviate, let alone eradicate poverty. And this is okay with you. plaetton: A space program will attract, aggregate, spread and propagate the requisite Brain-Thrust needed to confront and mitigate most of Nigeria's and Africa's most pressing problems.Starting a space program before properly educating your people, is not the solution. "Spread and propagate the requisite brain trust needed to... " Seriously? Education is a more practical plan. I'm not sure how a space program attracts aggregate. You'll have to explain that one to me. plaetton: Just imagine how it could slowly but surely decimate magical thinking, and the chronic zombification and mumufication of the Nigerian populace.Once again, proper education will do this, plaetton: Wow. This is great. This I can agree with, but not for the same reason. This type of propaganda is perfect for influencing the young to want to learn more about math and science. So when they are ready to learn, give them the type of education that will benefit them and the nation. plaetton: Anything, anything at all to increase our national IQ and neutralize the debilitating effects of magical thinking and religious bullshyts. As I said; EDUCATION is a more practical solution. dorox: Nigeria needs to develop its industrial base and rebuild basic infrastructure before talking of a viable space program. As a nation we struggle to generate enough electricity to meet 30% of our already very low demand, I don't think space should be our problem at this time.Thank you Ranchhoddas: Cart before the horse...we should get our priorities right.we do not need a space program.Exactly! |
Samgreguc: "satan does not understand the Bible but, he knows the Bible."Really? You think satan doesn't understand the Bible? He wan't to make sure we all join him. He is very clever. Do you think for an instant he does not know and understand the Bible better than all of us? Every successful military man knows his enemy better than they know themselves. This is war. He knows the bible backwards and forwards. He understands every word, and knows how to use it to his advantage. Don't underestimate the devil. It could be a crucial mistake. |

macof: why get hugs when u can get kisses? |
Nahum777: Even you? U dont believe? Okay, have been reading Obadiahs post, i mean all his posts, posts off nairaland too, so i know how to sound like him. Maybe you should know who i really am. https://www.nairaland.com/meilyn/posts thats who i am missDo you honestly think he doesn't have other monikers? |
ATMC: I used to think that the above mistake was common to only we Naija.oops...I usually proof read before I hit 'submit' I'll keep an eye on that. The mistake is usually 'there' in place of 'their', not the other way around though. Thanks for noticing. ![]() |
Joshthefirst: Hello Tex. I'm fine. Merry Christmas.Hey Josh...Merry Christmas to you too...hope this month is treating you well. ![]() |
rationalmind: My interpretation was spot on. You people should blame the translator not me. If you as an English teacher writes such a statement for your students, you would have to be returned to school.Okay, I'll give you that...translator...this time. ![]() |

Joshthefirst: I believe the deuteronomy verse is saying it is forbidden for a woman to grab another man's testicles while trying to defend her husband during a fight. How you reached the conclusion that she should not grab her husbands testicles at all is beyond me.I couldn't have said it better. Hi Josh. How are you? rationalmind: It is because you put on dark colored glasses when reading the bible. Now take a look at this, pay attention to the bolded.See below
Oga rational, maybe you need to put on some glasses... How is the woman "rescuing" her husband by grabbing him by the genitals? ![]() The verse is obviously talking about the other guy. And you call yourself "rational"?
My thoughts exactly. rationalmind: No let me insult you o. You should ask whoever wrote that verse how seizing ones husband genitals rescues him not meYou are seeing what you want to see. This is an example of why strictly rational thought is irrational. Sometimes common sense is the smarter choice. macof: Josh has a point.Thank you. The English teacher in me just wants to hug you... rationalmind: yea, I think the problem there is the translation. Whoever translated it did a bad jobThank you. See where a little common sense will get you. Even Obadiah's interpretation made more sense than yours. This deserves a hug too. Everyone gets a hug. Hug Hug Hug. plaetton: Fair enough. So have the boys done it for you. I'm going to figure "yes" Can we continue to Matthew 5:28? |
Justiceenams: . . LOVE AND DEATH .Wow! Awesome... I like. ![]() |
