However I would agree with you on two things:

1. The chances of her being mature enough to understand love and life are pretty slim for most girls her age though there are exceptions.

2. The chances of him being genuinely interested in a girl who he only describes as giving him the green light (he doesn't explain in details how the relationship goes beyond merely physical) or how he sees their future together. The OP might not know he is taking advantage of her naivety and think it's mutual. In UK for example, a girl can't give consent till she is 16, as it is assumed she doesn't fully comprehend her emotions and is likely to regret such actions afterwards.

I think the issue here might be her age rather than the gap. I agree he needs to let her mature (if he feels she probably isn't there yet), but I'm sure the OP knows her more than any of us do. I would advice him not to take advantage of the situation if his conscience tells him she is just being naïve.

A mature man does not become involved with a child, no mater how mature her body or her education. A mature man would never have aloud this relationship to progress to "green light". He would have sent her on her way, or let her know in no uncertain terms that he had no interest in her romantically before things progressed this far.

If he couldn't resist he should have taken himself out of temptations way, because as you point out, he is the "mature" adult here. He should have saved her from herself instead of taking advantage of what is probably a teenage crush.

I agree with the bolded. It is her age, not the age gap. What you said about regretting her actions later is likely to happen in this situation. Isn't it better to let her grow up and have a relationship later?

What happens when she wakes up one day, after they are married and have a child or two, and realizes she made a mistake in her impulsive, hormone ridden youth? It is too late then...especially if there are children involved.


Btw...a "well brought up" young lady does not give a grown man a "green light", and a mature, grown man does not entertain inappropriate thoughts or encourage a teen. At her age she is easily manipulated by the attentions of a more world wise and older man.

First, I wasn't talking about dating at all. Dating 100 men does not make you mature. She hasn't experienced life outside of the protective cocoon of her family and friends. Give her the chance to finish school at least.

Second, where do they go as a couple? He obviously knows his friends and family and her friends and family will not accept this. He wouldn't be here asking if he were confident in his choices.

Third, will he isolate her from her friends? Her friends are 16ish, except for him. Will he hang out with her friends? What about his friends, will he take his 16 year old gf to hang out with his almost 30 year old friends? (I'm sorry, I choke on saying that while I think of my own daughter. If he has a sister, would he wish this for her, or would he beat the guy to a pulp for even looking at his little sister?)

I keep seeing comments like this here and all over NL. It is true that many girls today look and act much older than they are. She may even posses great "book smarts". Just because a girl is physically mature enough to have sex and is smart, doesn't make her emotionally mature.

This girl has not lived. Give her time to mature in every way. Don't rob her of experiences that will help shape her into a mature adult. Give her the opportunity to grow into a strong mature woman. If you truly love her you wouldn't deny her that.
