An Abuja based physiotherapist, Mrs Lola Jude, has revealed how to prevent further deformities for stroke patients. According to her, patients need regular rehabilitation therapy and constant attention to prevent their bodies from becoming stiff. She gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Abuja. She said, rehabilitation should start immediately a person had suffered a stroke, depending on the blood pressure of the patient in order to get the patient back to normal life after the stroke incident. She also advised that passive exercise should be done continually to remind the brain to send signals to the paralysed parts of the body. “The body works on a principle of use it or lose it and muscle atrophy is the wasting away of muscle due to misuse. “The person should be positioned properly on the bed to avoid deformities, depending on how bad the stroke is, the blood pressure should be stabilised to avoid an immediate re-occurrence,” she said. Jude said, although recovery normally comes but the physiotherapist was needed to preserve the muscles for best recovery and by teaching the patient proper breathing patterns. “The limbs, ribs, shoulders and fingers are massaged and exercised using passive movements on both the affected and unaffected sides,” she said. She further stated that, while certain positions were encouraged for stroke patients, others were not discouraged and recommended that the patients’ hands should be placed behind their heads and a lot of pillows should be used to rightly position them, especially their shoulders. She advised on the need for patients’ caretakers and family members to be taught some level of physiotherapy and stroke management techniques to complement expert efforts. She called on patients to join group treatments and see psychologists to handle their emotional setbacks. Source: dailypost.ng |
MY RESPONSE TO THE ENEMY OF JOHESU 1. What is the meaning of the word `medical´ when it is used to refer to a group of profesional? 2. Are Physicians (they are being called ``doctors´´ which is an honorary title. Only PhD holder is fit to be called a `doctor´) not Health Workers? 3. Who do they refer to as ``non-medical professionals´´? Nurses, Pharmacists, Medical Laboratory Scientists or Physiotherapists? 4. Who is fit to head health sector? Physicians have been heading health sector but it is still a shame that Nigeria Health Care Delivery is ranked one of the lowest. 5. Who should determine the wages or salary? Government or Physicians? 6. What profesional courses are needed to be qualified as a ``medical profesional´ that Nurses, Medical Lab Scientists, Physiotherapists and Pharmacists have not ben exposed to during their undergraduate and post-graduate programs? 7. Can any health professional work in isolation? If No, how should each be paid? Based on input/output or grandiose salary scale? Physicians are not the head of other professional workers. We are all equal contributors to the health care delivery. To think otherwise is a Delusion of Grandiosis. WE ARE YET TO GET IT RIGHT IN THIS COUNTRY AS CITIZENS. By Emmanuel Akinwotu May 8, 2018 ABUJA, Nigeria — President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria, who has urged politicians not to go abroad to seek medical care, has traveled to Britain on his fifth official trip to see a doctor there. Mr. Buhari, 75, left for London on Monday for a four-day visit, setting off renewed concerns about his health. His trip also comes after three weeks of strikes by health care professionals who are calling for better working conditions and more funding. For nearly two years, Mr. Buhari has been receiving treatment for an unspecified illness, which he has repeatedly refused to discuss. The president is scheduled to return to Nigeria on Saturday, at which point he will have spent more than 170 days in London on official medical leave since becoming president in 2015. Mr. Buhari recently declared his intention to run for a second term next year, but many people in Nigeria, including some former presidents, have called on him to step down because of concerns about his health. After Mr. Buhari visited Washington to meet with President Trump late last month, he surprised reporters by not returning directly to Nigeria but instead making what his media team called a “technical stopover” in London. His aides later confirmed that he received medical treatment while in Britain. Mr. Buhari’s aides have insisted that the president is healthy and capable of running for office again, claiming that his political enemies are exaggerating any health concerns to attack him. In April 2016, months before his first medical trip to London, Mr. Buhari condemned the use of Nigerian resources on international medical expenses. “While this administration will not deny anyone of his or her fundamental human rights, we will certainly not encourage expending Nigerian hard-earned resources on any government official seeking medical care abroad, when such can be handled in Nigeria,” Mr. Buhari said, according to a statement from the Health Ministry at the time. During his campaign the president promised to end “medical tourism,” the practice of Nigerian politicians receiving medical treatment abroad even as most citizens are forced to rely on underfunded state medical services. After what was reported to have been motorbike accident in January, the president’s son, Yusuf Buhari, was also treated abroad , although the president’s aides would not confirm where he was treated. Nigerians see Mr. Buhari’s actions on health care as hypocritical, said Yemi Adamolekun, executive director of Enough Is Enough, a coalition of groups committed to building a culture of good government and public accountability in Nigeria. “As he’s getting a superior standard of health care for himself and his son, he’s done virtually nothing to invest in health care infrastructure and provision in Nigeria,” Ms. Adamolekun said. This year Nigeria spent 3.9 percent of its budget on health care, a fraction of the 15 percent target set by the United Nations. “Health professionals have been on strike now for three weeks, and they aren’t even talking about it,” Ms. Adamolekun said, referring to the government. “So we have poor health infrastructure, an exodus of qualified medical staff and now a strike with no conversation on how to fix it, yet our president jumps off to the U.K. for his own health.” A nationwide strike of 72,000 public health care workers has crippled medical services in state hospitals across Nigeria, and many more are expected to join the protest in the next few days. Biobelemoye Josiah, president of a coalition of unions involved in the strike, said that health care in Nigeria had suffered under Mr. Buhari’s administration. “There has long been medical tourism because our hospitals are grossly underfunded and that has continued, Mr. Josiah said.+ Source: https://mobile.nytimes.com/2018/05/08/world/africa/nigeria-president-buhari-health.html |
NLC appeals to FG to meet demands of striking health workers ON May 4, 2018 12:37 PM / The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called on the Federal Government to urgently meet the legitimate demands of the striking workers in the health sector. Mr Ayuba Wabba, NLC president, made the appeal while speaking with newsmen on Friday in Abuja. Wabba said this appeal has become necessary in order to save the health sector from total collapse in the country. Ayuba Wabba, NLC President According to him, healthcare workers and processionals of all the federal tertiary institutions are currently on nationwide indefinite industrial action. “This is largely due to government’s inability to honour collective bargaining agreement freely entered with the unions. “Every preferential treatment to one cadre would only compound the situation. “Healthcare delivery is a team work and every healthcare worker and professional is important to the optimum performance of the team. “There should be fair treatment to all and equity without discrimination as against what is now being witnessed,’’ he said. The NLC president called for global best practice and standard that should guide the action and inaction of the government in dealing with the precarious situation. He added that there is an urgent need for the government to put all machineries in motion to quickly meet the legitimate demands of the striking unions. Wabba said this was important as the health system has become shadow of what it used to be years back when many countries from Africa trooped to Nigeria in search of healthcare services. “The reverse is now the case as many Nigerians now embark on medical tourism. “This leads to huge capital flight from our economy. The factors responsible for this decline include funding issues and decay in infrastructure and technology,” he said. Wabba, however, called on government at all levels to make it mandatory for all public officers to patronised healthcare facilities for the medical needs of their families. The Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU) had commenced strike on April 17, following the Federal Government’s failure to implement agreement signed with the unions. The union’s demands include adjustment of CONES salary as done for CONMESS since 2014, and abolition of scale to scale promotion, payment of outstanding arrears of promotion, skipping and relativity. Others are autonomy of teaching and specialist hospitals, non execution of court judgments, review of retirement age from 60-65 years as done for teachers in the tertiary education sector. Good day Comrades, I once again salute our resilience and doggedness in sustaining the on-going battle for liberation, battle to claim our well deserved rights, battle to once again return the administration and delivery of health-care in this country on a very sound footing. One of the most difficult and fierce battle is the battle for recognition and freedom from slave masters. And this present battle is one, hence we must expect it to become more fierce each passing day into the action with government through the FMOH and its agents employing different types of blackmail, intimidation and coercion. This brazen display of executive lawlessness and insensitivity can and would only be over-comed by our remaining focused, resolved and united. Let the FMOH and its spoilt children (doctors) know that no amount of blackmail and intimidation can disrupt this present action, but rather their doing the needful. Almighty will liberate the administration of health care system in this country from the strangulating hold of the present administrators who are hell bent on ruining it for their personal and selfish gains in the name of PPP, privatisation and their private practices that are often the beneficiaries of industrial crisis in the Health Sector thereby making the vast majority of poor Nigerians who can not assess their private facilities to suffer and die unnecessarily. We are already computing and will soon publish the names and locations of the private facilities of the officials of FMOH, CMDs/MDs, members of MDCAN and others involved in the administration of health in this country. On 26/Mar/2018 / In Medical News They even issued some of their victims fake visas and some of them learnt they have been Scammed at the airport while trying to board a plane to Singapore to resume their jobs 31-year-old Nimmy Jose, a nurse from Kerala, walked into the Cochin International Airport, one day mid-February, all set to board an airplane to Singapore to join her new workplace. A job she had secured through a recruitment agency. However, Nimmy soon realised that her visa was in fact fake and that she was cheated by the recruiting agency - Elite Professionals. This, after months of formalities, interviews and paying a sum of about Rs 60,000 in total to the recruiting agency based in New Delhi. Nimmy soon realised that it was not just her, but several other people from Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, who had fallen victims to the visa fraud and lost thousands of rupees in the process. The 'recruitments' were made to Amydgala Nursing Home and Orange Valley Nursing Home, both of which, it turns out, do not exist at all. A month after Elite Professionals cut off all contact with Nimmy and several others who applied for jobs through the agency and paid money, there are at least 10 complaints filed with the Kerala police in the matter. Victims have also reportedly filed complaints in Bengaluru and Tamil Nadu. Despite this, the victims are yet to receive any respite for their crisis. How did the scam take place? 33-year-old Bijoy Sebastian, a native of Iritty in Kannur district, is one among the many people who was scammed by the company. Having worked in a hospital in Rajasthan for the past five years, he was looking to shift to Singapore. Speaking to TNM, Bijoy, who is now unemployed, says that Elite Professionals had managed to effectively convince him that they were a legitimate agency. Having worked in the UK for about three years, it came as a rude shock for Bijoy when he realised he had fallen victim to the visa fraud. "I had put up my resume on Naukri.com and it was in April last year that Elite Professionals got in touch with me and said my profile had been shortlisted. They said that their service was completely free. After the interview that took place the same month, they said that it will take 4 months for visa procedure to be done and after that, I was good to go," Bijoy says. He adds that the agency had contacted him through phone calls and emails. While the agency had initially promised that their services were free, after sending the offer letters to the job seekers, they began demanding money. "A sum of Rs 15,000 was initially paid as a caution deposit, this was supposed to be refundable. After the interview, they sent me a Foreign Identification Number (FIN) and sent me a link called checkthevisa.com. When I entered the FIN number in it, it showed all my details and looked legit. At one point, I went to an Singpore government website and entered the number, but it showed as invalid then. When I enquired, they said that I had to clear some dues, after which it would be sorted," Bijoy says. In the months that followed, the agency allegedly demanded more money from the applicants, claiming that the visa rules had changed. Vinod, a nurse currently working in a private hospital in Bengaluru, paid nearly Rs 25,000 to the agency. His wife, Renjani, a native of Bengaluru, tells TNM that the agency had been in touch with them for about 6 months, before they went incommunicado. "They got in touch with us sometime in July and by September, a telephonic interview was done and we were told we will be given the offer letter. After the interview, they suddenly called up my husband and gave him just 2 hours to pay Rs 15,000. While we said we won't be able to pay up, we contacted them after a few days. Finally, they sent us an offer letter and instead of Vinod, they had entered the name as Vijay. So we refused to pay the money until they corrected this error. That process went on for a few weeks. Then there was so much delay and every time we enquired, they gave numerous explanations. Finally, it was only in February that we realised we had been fooled. They stopped contacting us, their numbers went off," Renjini says. Nimmy's husband Titto Antony, who works in Bengaluru, says that the agency had a foolproof plan in place to dupe people. "They never demanded any money initially, and so there was no reason to suspect any foul play. Plus, the website checkthevisa.com had photographs of Modi and the Singapore PM, and it looked very much like a government website. So did the websites of the hospital to which the recruitment was made. The hospital website had contact details, the location, job vacancy information, everything" Titto says. Complaints Since February, a number of victims have come together to form a group and are looking to take legal action against the agency. In Kerala, there are at least 15 complaints given to the police. Ponkunnam police in Kottayam confirmed to TNM that they have received 7 complaints in the past one month. Two complaints, including that of Bijoy, were filed at the Kannur SP office. However, no FIR has been registered in this matter yet. According to the Ponkunnam police, the preliminary inquiry has been started based on the complaints."We have sent a request to the concerned police station in Delhi, seeking information about the company. We are yet to get an inquiry report from them.”. Even as complaints to the police have failed to nab the members of the agency till now, the victims hope that their coordinated effort in bringing the culprits to book will work out. 'Women are suffering in silence': Physiotherapist reveals the birth injuries you need to know about before having a child By Sheree Mutton For Daily Mail Australia 22:56 GMT 24 Oct 2017, updated 00:28 GMT 25 Oct 2017 210 comments Latest From MailOnline Sydney physiotherapist Heba Shaheed says pain and incontinence are common She says 85 per cent of women want to be informed before giving birth Ms Shaheed says prevention and early treatment are crucial for new mothers Childbirth is a painful and often traumatic experience for women, but according to Sydney physiotherapist Heba Shaheed it is not spoken about enough. The mother and co-founder of The Pelvic Expert has treated more than 2000 women, many of whom have suffered from a birth injury. Sydney physiotherapist Heba Shaheed says most mothers-to-be want to be informed of possible birth injuries According to Ms Shaheed, up to 50 per cent of mothers will develop pelvic organ prolapse and consequently suffer from pain, heaviness or urinary incontinence. 'Depending on their age, 20 to 50 per cent of first-time mums physically tear their pelvic floor muscles off their pubic bone during childbirth, which leads to a lifetime of problems,' she says. Ms Shaheed says many new mothers who have had a traumatic birth experience are suffering in silence 'And 10 to 15 per cent of all mums will have a perineal tear that extends into their anus or rectum. 'Unfortunately, because of the taboo nature of pelvic health issues, women are suffering alone and in silence,' she adds. In the week before Ms Shaheed's daughter's birth in March, she conducted a survey of more than 800 women women asking them if they would like to know about their individual risk factors for birth-related pelvic floor problems. During her pregnancy earlier this year Ms Shaheed (pictured) completed pelvic floor exercises to minimise long-term health problems post-birth She says 85 per cent of women indicated they wanted to be informed before giving birth. 'Only two per cent indicated that being informed would scare them. 'There has been this long-held belief in the medical and health professions that informing women of birth-related injuries will scare them. However, the survey clearly demonstrates the opposite,' she continues. 'Personally, I felt empowered about my own birth knowing that I had all the information available to me.' Ms Shaheed says educating new mothers about post-birth health problems will encourage them to seek treatment early How to strengthen your pelvic floor * Squeeze and lift your pelvic floor on the breath out and relax it down on the breath in. * To activate the pelvic floor, imagine the muscles that tighten when you try to stop the flow of your wee. * Do buttock strengthening exercises such as pelvic bridges, squats and lunges, but women need to be 'pelvic floor aware' - meaning they need to actively squeeze their pelvic floor as they exercise. * Engage the deep abdominal muscles (transversus abdominis) with the pelvic floor squeeze i.e. as you breathe out, squeeze and lift the pelvic floor muscles and tighten the lower abdomen towards the spine. Source: The Pelvic Expert Ms Shaheed says it is a great disservice to Australian women who are not educated prenatally about birth-related pelvic floor problems. 'Worse still is the abandonment women feel in the postpartum period,' she adds. 'Beyond the six-week check, which is poorly attended in some areas, there is very little support for women after birth.' Ms Shaheed believes there is a 'maternal health crisis' in Australia because women’s health issues are being swept under the rug or normalised in some way. 'Postpartum depression and post-traumatic stress disorder PTSD is on the rise, and there is a link between the birth injury and mental health problem.' She says prevention and early treatment are crucial to minimising long-term health problems for new mothers. 'Women in Australia should see a women’s health physiotherapist at least once in their pregnancy and at eight weeks postpartum,' she says. Ms Shaheed recommends expectant mothers to see a women's health physiotherapist like herself 'This way, pelvic floor problems could be prevented or would be diagnosed early, with early intervention and access to evidence-based non-surgical solutions. 'We need to smash through the stigma so that we can empower women to live lives free of pain and embarrassing control problems. 'This will have a ripple effect on her relationship with her partner, her children, her career, social life, and the entire healthcare system.' Dubai Nurse Loses Salary, Savings To Fraudsters On 19/Mar/2018 / In Medical News She got a call that she had wọn a lottery to confirm her account for payment "I am going public with my story now so hopefully no one else will suffer from what I am going through." One phone call was all it took for her bank account and credit cards to be wiped out clean. Michelline Reyes Viernes, a nurse working in Sharjah, woke up to a call after her shift one September evening to a caller who gave her incredible news. “He called me to say that I had won Dh500,000 and he was going to wire the money to my NBAD account. He read aloud my bank account details and asked me to confirm. I was surprised that he knew my account so I thought that maybe he is really from the bank,” Viernes told Gulf News. The caller also asked for her date of birth. Unbeknown to Viernes, the man was at that point making an online account for her to steal her money. “While we were on the phone, I had a feeling that something was amiss. I received a series of SMSes in my mobile that my money had been debited from my account and withdrawals were made from my credit cards so I immediately called the call centre of NBAD on our landline to block my account.” But it was too late. By then, the fraudster had amassed Dh22,450, including her salary, and cash withdrawals from her two credit cards. Telecom companies du and Etisalat have, over the years, warned people of fraudsters claiming to be telecom staff and tricking people that they had won in raffles. The modus operandi remains the same, only the methods and the words slightly differ. According to Viernes’ complaint filed with Sharjah Police, her money was siphoned off her account and converted into phone credit balances transferred directly to eight mobile numbers. She said she tried to trace the individuals who owned the mobile numbers but to no avail. Viernes also reported the fraud to her bank, NBAD, which is now First Abu Dhabi Bank (FAB). She said a bank official told her that based on their investigation, the transaction had been proven as fraudulent and is now with the department concerned. “My only question is how did they know my bank account number? I never had an online account. The fraudsters were able to make an online account so they could steal all my money. And whenever I would follow up with NBAD, no one is able to help me,” she said. When contacted by Gulf News, First Abu Dhabi Bank said in a statement: “Ms Viernes contacted the bank about the matter, and was informed by our customer service team to file a case with the police. Once FAB receives an official letter about the investigation, the bank will answer any enquiries from the police, who will continue to communicate with the customer directly. “If customers have insurance on their account or facilities, they should file a claim via the bank’s call centre or branch, however in cases where the customer has shared their details with another party, FAB cannot provide a refund, as per bank policy.” Viernes said she has been running from pillar to post since September and has not gotten back even a single dirham of her money. Her boss, colleagues and some friends were kind enough to lend her some money to support her three kids. But she continues to pay for the credit card dues until now. “I am paying for money withdrawn from my credit card that I never even used. Yes, I might have committed a small error, but it’s such a high price to pay. I am going public with my story now so hopefully no one else will suffer from what I am going through. “I’m desperate. I have three kids to support. I am pleading with everyone, with authorities, please help me get back the money stolen from me.” Source : Gulf News |

Rotimi Adesanya Child and Public Health Physician A reader sent this question last week: ‘ Please I want to know the cause and remedy of back and waist pain’ . The back ache started after the delivery of my first child . After the birth of my second child the pain increased. Now it’ s almost six months and it is affecting me seriously , I ’m careful in doing certain chores . Please help !’ A postpartum period begins immediately after the birth of a child and extends to about six weeks, as the mother ’ s body , including hormone levels and uterus size, returns to a non -pregnant state. Post- partum backache, therefore , means one experienced by a mother after delivery. Many of the physical changes that can cause low back pain during pregnancy may contribute to back ache now . Causes The body releases progesterone and relaxing hormones during pregnancy to loosen the ligaments and joints of the pelvic bone in order to help the baby come out with ease. The weak ligaments and muscles lead to back pain . These hormones stay raised for a few months after delivery. As the uterus expands during pregnancy, it weakens the abdominal muscles and pulls the lower spine forward , putting pressure on the lower back muscles . Being overweight puts extra pressure on the back . The delivery process stresses the lower back and it takes time to recover. Bending frequently for lifting the baby or for something else results in back pain . If you had back pain before and during pregnancy, it is likely to continue post-partum as well. Having a wrong posture , especially while breastfeeding , can strain the muscles, causing backache . Also , while giving birth you may have used muscles you don’ t normally use. So you could feel those effects for some time , especially if you had a long or difficult labour. And the overall exhaustion and stress of taking care of a newborn 24/7 can also make it harder to recover from all aches and pains after childbirth, including back pain. Symptoms Back pain usually gets better within a few months after delivery, although some women will continue to have pain for much longer. Those with backache before or during pregnancy are likely to have back ache after pregnancy , especially if it was severe or began relatively early in pregnancy. Being overweight also increases the risk of chronic back pain . Prevention and treatment Stand – and sit – up straight. Pay attention to your body position when feeding your baby , whether you ’ re nursing or bottle -feeding . Choose a comfortable chair with armrests , and use lots of pillows to give extra support to your back and arms. If you ’ re breastfeeding , consider buying a breastfeeding pillow that goes around your middle . Also try using a footstool to keep your feet slightly raised off the floor. Learn to position yourself properly while nursing and always bring your baby to your breast , rather than the other way around . Also try different breastfeeding positions. Always bend from your knees , and pick up objects ( and children ) from a crouching position to minimise the stress on your back . Take rest as much as possible as strenuous physical activities will aggravate your pain . Avoid wearing high- heel footwear for a few months after delivery. Avoid carrying the baby on one hip for a longer time because it puts constant pressure on the back muscles. Use a front pack to carry your baby . Avoid stretching your arms while picking your baby . Instead, get closer to your baby and then lift . Sleep in a comfortable position and use pillows for support. While placing your child in the back seat of the car do not bend or stretch your arms. Instead , kneel down on the back seat and place your baby in the car seat . Taking analgesics like ibuprofen or acetaminophen; don’ t take more than recommended. Physical therapy ( Physiotherapy ) : A Physical therapist can teach you exercises to relieve or prevent low back pain . Note : If you have had a C - section , then wait for at least six weeks before you start with this exercise. Physiotherapist also uses TENS which is called transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation . Some people report that using one of these small , inexpensive devices temporarily relieves their low back pain . Conclusion Most times the back pain resolves itself after a few months post-delivery . But, you must call a doctor if the pain is severe and gets worse gradually; if it is accompanied by a fever ; if pain is caused by trauma such as a fall ; if there is numbness in one or both the legs; if you suddenly feel uncoordinated or if the back pain persists even after six months . Please when you receive this video make it widely known to save lives. There are false agencies from China, Korea, Japan and other Asian countries currently open in Nigeria, Ghana, Kinshasa, South Africa, and in several African countries, These agencies promise to work abroad, as in Dubai, Japan, Korea, India and several other countries mainly in Asia, work as a housekeeper, baby guard, etc., The procedures for the papers to leave are the responsibility of these agencies. These agencies recruit more girls. When you get to their destination they kill you and recover your organs like liver, heart kidney. These agencies use our greedy and heartless African brothers and sisters as their intermediary agents to accomplish this task hall. Their route covers Dubai, Cairo in Egypt, Libya, and Beirut in Lebanon. They prepare the papers, they pay for the tickets and everything necessary, but when you arrive at your destination it is the end of your life. The video accompanying this message was recorded by a smuggler who was unaware of the outcome of the so-called workers. Make this message widely known and you will have saved many lives. God bless you. Very horrific. But a stern warning to those still desperate to leave Nigeria to go abroad for "greener pastures" especially to those countries mentioned here. This is a medical organ harvest. The body will continue to be alive until they take out most of the vital organs they need |
The Bible forbids polygamy, divorce and remarriage. It is one man, one woman. The two shall become one flesh. 1 Corinthians 7:2 Nevertheless, to avoid fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband. 1 Corinthians 7:10 And unto the married I command, yet not I, but the Lord, Let not the wife depart from her husband: 1 Corinthians 7:11 But and if she depart, let her remain unmarried, or be reconciled to her husband: and let not the husband put away his wife. Matthew 19:5 And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh? Matthew 19:6 Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder. |
