Most of the time, the problem people have with something isn't that it is bad, it is the fact that it doesn't meet their expectations. This explains why some people have so much nonsense to say and even go out of their way to justify senseless rhetoric.

I am doing fantastic and I am completely happy with where I am today. I'm not rich or living a perfect life but you can bet I'm excited for the future. There's a reason the life expectancy in Nigeria is 53 and that in the U.S. is 78! I hope it's not too late when you figure it out. wink

No, I’m talking about American Banks like Wellsfargo & Bank of America.

It’s not as easy as you make it seem for RN to $100,000

You fail to realize that $80k+ per annum is before tax by the time taxes are taken out and Bills are paid including Rent & Car note then it becomes very difficult to saved up such amount of money.

Where/when/how did I make it seem easy for a RN to earn/save/make $100k? I only said it's a possibility. I don't know where you people live that bills and tax is taking all your earnings o.

RNs with experience, working in ICU for example, can earn $80k+ AFTER TAX (I know one in Tennessee). It depends on lifestyle. She currently has two houses, 2 cars and has $55k cash in her account. I promise I can show you proof if you think I'm making it up.

My point is: it is not an impossibility. Things happen in this life of ours.

Interesting read. Let's hope your car doesn't get repossessed, I've seen this happen a lot on screen and it's quite devastating for folks who experience it

One question, is your earning as an Uber driver not taxed?

Same way we should hope you don't get picked up on your way home by SARS operatives and shot in the head to die on the spot. This also happens to people and it's devastating for their friends and family afterwards. Take your negativity away from me.

Uber earnings are taxed. Paying taxes unlike you doesn't scare me. Moreover there are countless things to claim as deductions. Driven miles, gas I bought, insurance paid, etc. At the end of the day, the taxable income is reduced greatly and I may not even pay anything significant.

Nobody said that you cannot save up enough money.

I mean you could if you wanted to be picking up another job but you also have to let go certain things.

What most people are trying to point out is that Most Money Made in America stays in America.

That’s is how most advance society are designed.

I wasn’t talking about saving up $100,000.

I mean that would be impossible by simply working a regular job.

I was talking about taking out a $100,000 Business line of credit from my bank in exchange for a lien on my Business.

Are you talking about this credit from a Nigerian bank? If yes, that's awesome!!! I didn't know Nigerian banks could do such. If No, can you do the same with a Nigerian bank? If yes, that's still awesome!!!

PS. You can save $100k working a regular job here (if being a RN and making $80k+ per annum is considered regular). It's not as impossible as you're making it. The question is... who's willing to make sacrifices to have $100k cash sitting in their bank account? Lol.

I mentioned it in my post earlier,They would want to move back not for good intention but it’s simply because they cannot adapt and cope with the society. They couldn’t cope with a functioning system with no fraud, bribery and many other criminal activities!!

Lol, the moving back concept is really baffling. Someone's talking about moving back with 30-60 million Naira ($100k-200k). That's a lot of money. How many people can save 60m Naira in Nigeria? How many?

People have failed abroad, people have also been fooled into moving back home thinking it'd be easier. In the end, they lost their way and their only saving grace was that they could realize their mistake and flee Nigeria again lol.

A functioning system is a functioning system! It's complete ignorance to compare Nigeria to a such countries. There are still places in Lagos where you can't drive to. You have to park your car somewhere and walk or else... you'll spend your next salary fixing your car.

I'm not against anyone wanting to move back. As long as they do it for their own reasons without saying untrue things, we're cool. Not even 2m Naira a month can make me move back to Nigeria. I can't deal with stupidity anymore.

Lmao! Ungrateful hypocrites all over the place. Sometimes, no matter how much you try to explain a concept, some people won't just get it. I'll stop trying.

See them talking about saving $100k-200k to move back to Nigeria in the same country where they said it's impossible to save any money due to tax, bills, debts, etc.

I'm glad I was able to leave at a young age grin

You can fool yourselves by talking up Nigeria like it's flowing with milk and honey over there, lmao. Is it not the same Nigeria?

Sit down there and listen to stories of failed people, continue reading things online about losers and keep deceiving yourself with the Idea that everyone is suffering here lol. Your ignorance will only increase.

I shake my head when I think of the barbers, hairdressers, truck drivers, welders, auto-mechanics, plumbers, etc. in Nigeria and how underrated/undervalued they are.

As I am typing this comment, I just thought to myself... I can conveniently walk into a car dealership this weekend and walk out with a brand new 2018 Honda Accord if I wanted to and I'm just an average person with a nice credit score and a good job. I'm only having that opportunity because I'm here.

Oh, and guess what? I tried the Uber/Lyft thing last weekend lol. I made $432 driving Thur-Sat, evenings only. Not bad for a rookie, is it? I spent about $30 on gas, though. I'm already fighting the temptation to make another $400+ this weekend.

I'm glad things are working out for me beyond my expectations. Wherever you are, if things are genuinely working out for you how you want, awesome!

EDIT

Just checked the exact figures, it wasn't 432. It's 246 on Lyft and $201 on Uber making $447. grin grin grin

[s]OK, Relocating abroad on any type of non-immigrant visas for the sake of getting a parole or do AOS cannot be termed legal immigration,if not we wont have any single one without residency. There's clear difference between travelling abroad and immigrating abroad legally, the latter has been abused and quoted wrongly. As i said earlier, the only legal immigration routes out of Nigeria as at today are through DV,family based and some kind of EB series. My opinion[/s].

Documented aliens who are checked in/paroled in at the port of entry and are following proper channels to become permanent residents are doing it LEGALLY. For example, some students decide to stay after studies and never commit any crime in doing so.

There are several ways to migrate without breaking rules. People do them EVERY day.

Nigerians on the move without applying for visa...

Many things are unclear about this image. Is it the stats of illegal arrivals? Nigeria's population compared to the other nations on the list could mean the % of people from other countries moving are higher. Also, there seemed to be a decline in the number for Nigeria in 2018 compared to the previous year, etc.

All in all, migrating illegally by sea is one of the things I'd NEVER EVER advise anyone to do. That thing's so risky I don't have the heart for it but what do I know?

Just this point alone disqualifies him. I don't want to know if it's true or not, 10 out of 10, anyone will see that as a fat lie. How could an hospital sponsor someone not for medical seminar, leadership workshop or for skill acquisition program but associate degree. Of what importance is he to the hospital? Probably the hospital is family owned.

At first, you said it was impossible and 100% a flat out lie, but you contradicted yourself by suggesting a possible scenario in the end (saying probably the hospital is family owned) which could be one of many other possible scenarios. Keep your mind open.

I'm not in support of whatever that poster said or against the criticism she's getting from you guys but I frown when people say things like "nobody should/would spend x amount of money to do y". Ahan, is it your money?

I'll use this post to begin on this thread, what most people fail to realise when migrating is that you must be adding value!. You aren't a citizen of the country, so where does you sense of entitlement come from?

Also, Berliner mentioned studying in demand courses, from 4 years in UK, I can say that most indigenes of these countries don't want to study the hard/technical courses, so going to study courses like "European history, Sociology, Human Resources etc." will only put you at a disadvantage cos there's a surplus of their indigenes in that labour market.

The key to successful migration I'll say is strategically planning before moving and ensuring you have potential to add value to the country you are migrating to.

I'll be sharing experiences of myself, family and friends to the question this thread asks, later

You're wise and I agree with you. I'd love to learn about your experiences. wink

Where is desired job available without paying your dues? Mention the country.

Look for internship, werkstudent after that the rest becomes easier.

Move with people with positivity.

I know more than 10 Nigerians working after graduation here...its not easy anywhere...learn language, do internship, study courses in demand(not the likes of forestry etc)...connect with people and move out of your afro bloc.

This is spot on! People forget two of the most important things to remember when migrating: a positive mind and assimilation (blending in)! That's why some people fail.

Move with people who see their cups as half full (not half empty) and try to blend with your host town/city/state/country. Learn about them and try to do things their way and your life would be easier. You stubbornly refuse to learn Finnish, German, Spanish, Italian for example or refuse to try to change your pronunciation habits for Americans, Canadians, etc. to understand you and you complain later, you have yourself to blame.

Hello everyone.

I want to know, how adviseable is it to be denied visa with an unranked school's I20 and refiring almost immediately with a ranked school? Should I just reapply or wait till the next session? How affordable is living at Oregon for an average student because the school am looking at now is located there?. I need opinions and practical experience if possible. Thanks all

I remember your username. I just want to point something out to you. If you think repplying for a visa with a "ranked" school will guarantee your visa, I'm afraid you need a really good reality check. You will still have to work for your visa.

If you're asked why you changed to XYZ university in Oregon and all you can say is "it is a ranked school", it's just another futile effort. What's my point? If you're trying to get into other schools, this is the time to start asking yourself what you want, why you really want them and do your research and continue learning how to prepare for interviews.

Moving on, cost of living depends on so many factors. Like in any state, not all cities are the same so, where your school is/you'd live could be factors too. Oregon is a relatively expensive state to live in but remember: sometimes, the cheapest things in life aren't the cheapest. Mississippi, Alabama, Oklahoma are cheap states but there are so many places in these states you wouldn't wanna live in as a foreigner.

Don't rush any decision, wait for the next session and spend time preparing. Make better decisions and be self critical. Don't let your future be decided by a random, faceless person in another place like me and others here lol because in the end, you'll be the one to live with your decisions.

Always go for what's best for YOU, not what someone thinks would be best for them. I wish you the best.

Please is 2.03 GPA qualified to apply for Masters!

Yes it is!!! Only thing is... you'd have to strengthen your application and apply to programs/schools you have a chance of getting into.

What do I mean by strengthening your application? Try to prepare and do well on standardized tests like TOEFL or GRE (preferably both), read on how to write a really good statement of purpose for your admission, etc. If you succeed in doing this, you'd see that your profile could be better than that of someone with a 3.0+ cgpa and has nothing else.

Don't rush into anything, target fall 2019 semester and start your preparation now. It's doable!

VO: Why are you going to the US?
Me: I’m going for my Masters in Information Technology in Minnesota State University
VO: Tell me about the program
Me: I’ll be majoring in Information Security. The program consists of a 32 credits courses spanning 24 months, I’ll be taking courses in AI, Information warfare, dB security etc and cap it up with a thesis.
VO: Did you take any test?
Me: The GRE was waived for me because of my UG CGPA and my professional experience
VO: Have you travelled outside Nigeria before?
Me: No; I’ve not had any reason to until now
VO: How many other schools did you apply to?
Me: Two; University of Central Missouri and University of Bridgeport
VO: what’s the relationship between the 3?
Me: They all support research interests in Network and Database Security which is what I want my thesis on.
VO: Tell me about your academic background
Me: I have a bachelors of engineering in electrical and electronics engineering from Covenant University in 2014.
VO: What have you been doing since after your nysc?
Me: Immeidtaely after my NYSC, I got employed in Abc bank, a major commercial bank in Nigeria. I currently work as an IT Security and Complince Engineer
VO: I see you have a good job, why do you want to leave your job now?
Me: it’s all about career progression for me. I believe with the masters would equip me with the necessary technical and business skills to professionally compete for a more senior role upon my return.
VO: Are you married? Any kids?
Me: No sir
VO: who’s your sponsor?
Me: My aunt
VO: *types for a while* I’m sorry blah blah blah

People at the embassy were asking me to reapply but I don’t think I want to be dashing people things.
Please constructively criticize so others can learn
Thanks.

In my opinion, your interview was really going well and you almost nailed it. I'd definitely reapply if I were in your shoes but with better preparation. Nothing wrong with your answers except for the two questions in bold.

First one. Did you take any tests? I think "No" or "No, I didn't" would have been better. Not taking a test is not a crime. If they need anything else, they'd ask why.

The second question in bold was your chance to nail the visa. Your answer was general, vague and most importantly, it didn't really answer the question: "Why are you leaving your good job?". Read your answer again, and you'd see that you could have done a better job. Another VO could have been impressed so maybe you just got unlucky.

I believe reapplying is a good idea with better preparation. Give specifics. Talk about the particular technical and business skills you'd be getting and the particular examples of "senior roles" you wanna go back to. Better preparation. Don't give up on a dream after one failure. wink

This is an opinion, please don't mistake for legal advice

You should be careful with this. Having relatives in Sacramento as a reason for choosing to study there could send a signal to a VO and set you up for a more intense interview.
