Nairaland / General / 7 Ideas On How Nairaland Frontpage Can Do Better by TheBigUrban2: 6:04am On Dec 13, 2014
1) Dont post too frequently- 15 fp topics a day is a good benchmark.
The funny thing about choice is that, when bombarded with too many choices, people get confused. This is a fact learnt from retail business. In supermarkets, when there are 30+ brands for just one product (eg cornflakes) consumers usually have trouble deciding which one to pick.

2)Use quotas for the kinds of threads to reach the front page- some romance, some politics, some unconventional topics
Not every romance topic should make front page. There should be different types of topics on the front page and they should be shared sensibly. Nowadays too many political topics make front page....not everything is boko haram and APC vs PDP. There are untouched sections that hardly make front page- for instance I like reading about business ethics and travel- more posts from travel and business section

3) Post atheist topics gaddemmit
Atheist topics are guaranteed hot discussion magnets and also traffic magnets. We need more

5) post prenmiership news/articles. Arsenal, Man utd, chelsea!!
Nigerians like football. We like the EPL mostly. So why do we see so few topics on EPL making front page? The banter between arsenal, man u and chelsea fans will always drive traffic

6) Stop bias and tribalism.Dont just be posting threads made by your friends!!!
The supermods need to be careful with this. I won't go further to specify the mod.

7) Seun needs to hire competent supermods
I am saying this because of what I have seen from the actions of a particular supermod. What kind of supermod derails, abuses and then abuses power to ban people? This same supermod has a cabal of followers that are hostile to certain outsiders.

Also, Seun needs supermods who are competent enough to know what makes a thread interesting and interactive. The supermod should also be able to carry himself or herself with dignity and not engage in fights with ordinary members.

Here is a compilation of the deeds of the supermod that I found incompetent- https://www.nairaland.com/2042152/travails-abusive-supermod

These are only suggestions. They might not be perfect and it is up to the owner to decide whether he listens to them or not.

What's your definition of friend?

If it's what I'm thinking, then, she's not my friend. I only know the moniker and we don't rapport.

Remember when you were supporting her against me? lol.

I take your denial of her as a strong indication that you acknowledge her shortcomings. grin grin

You're an incorrigible troll. You cannot deny yourself. You will always be a troll; notorious and disliked by a majority of nairalanders. Banned by mods, left, right and centre. Anywhere you go, you leave the putrid stench of your bile and outwardly projected self-loathing, souring up threads and causing fights.

Refrain from mentioning my username in your irritating posts, tpiah. I am not the one responsible for your problems in life. You're warned

Can you react to something when you are not aware of it?

isn't is insultive to call someone a bigot?

Besides, i have read both pastor aio and texanomaly, i have never read them teach that one religion is as good as the other, (you can correct me if i am wrong) i think pastor in particular believes that all religion is a search for the divine and that salvation is "possible for all men of goodwill", i believe both.... But it will be a long strech to claim that they believe all religions are equal, heck that is very well against the holy books you say they believe.

On a thread on arrogance, it is so amazing you show a good level of it even without religion.

Calling a bigot a bigot is not an insult.

And you are yet to show the amazing level of arrogance that I displayed on this thread.

Do you need me to prove your bigotry? Hmmm?

And to you reaction is not as a result of awareness??
Don't stones react to external bodies??

Doesn't our planet react to sunlight, doesn't water react to earthquakes, dropping stones etc

Wow....Anony's dubious logic has rubbed off on you!!! grin

You interchange two different definitions of "react" to cause confusion

1)A tree turns to ashes when you burn it
2) A tree bends to sunlight

1) and 2) are very different reactions.

A tree eating an insect is very different from a stone breaking apart due to erosion.

I'll leave you to your falsehood......

I am not diverting from the original point at all. I don't hold that consciousness is tied to whether a thing is alive or responds to stimuli. I also don't think that a tree is conscious. You are the one arguing that it is. You have even defined consciousness. Now all you have to do is show that your tree meets your definition. You can't and therefore we must reject your opinion because it is false.

Calling my questions ridiculous didn't mask the fact that you failed to explain how your tree is conscious according to your own definition of consciousness.

Feel free to state that a tree isnt conscious. You will still contradict yourself later. Bookmarked

I perceive that you are not interested in a discourse but rather you want a short soundbite that you can more easily misrepresent. In that case the long answer which I have already provided is sufficient.

MrAnony1:
Very good.

Do you think a tree is aware that it is bending towards sunlight? i.e. Is the tree bending towards sunlight by it's volition or could it voluntarily choose not to bend towards sunlight?
If the tree cannot make choices, how then do you know that it is conscious? If on the other hand it can make choices, then please provide evidence of this happening.

You are going away from the original point. Your questions are highly irrelevant. A tree is conscious. No need to be diverted by your ridiculous questions
Religion / Re: When We Die! by TheBigUrban2: 10:31am On Sep 08, 2014
MrAnony1:
I don't understand this question. It seems like you are asking me "If the afterlife has no effect on your morality, how then can it have an effect on your morality?" The question already assumes that the afterlife has no effect on morality. It is a loaded question

That's like me asking "if you haven't stopped beating your wife, how then can you say that you have stopped beating your wife." The question already assumes that you beat your wife and actually leaves you no room to answer. It is equally a loaded question.

My position is simple: If there is no afterlife then there is no obligation upon us to live our lives in any particular manner since in the end we all die and rot away regardless of whatever we did.
To give you an analogy; Assuming that whether or not you work hard in the office, you will never be paid regardless of whether you do an excellent or a shoddy job or absolutely nothing, then there is no way one can say that you are under any obligation to work hard hence it is not reasonable to work hard in that case.

You've really not said anything here

To cut the long story short-

Are you moral because of heaven/hell? Yes or no?
Religion / Re: When We Die! by TheBigUrban2: 10:07am On Sep 08, 2014
MrAnony1:
Will I be representing your view correctly if I say that you believe that a response to stimuli is an indicator of consciousness and where a response to stimuli is not found, the subject in question is therefore unconscious i.e. you believe a stone is unconscious because it doesn't respond to stimuli while a plant is conscious because it responds to stimuli.

Consciousness is a state of awareness.

Being conscious is far more than reacting to stimuli. Being self aware requires voluntary actions. A freshly dead body can react to stimuli eg, a snake head biting a finger put in the mouth even after the body has been severed.

A stone isnt self aware. A tree is. They bend to sunlight and some even eat insects.

MrAnony1:

Wrong, that is not what I said at all. Here is what I said;

a) If an afterlife does not exist then man really has no actual moral obligations i.e It is not reasonable to act morally

b) If an afterlife exists and it's outcome depends on the way the present life is lived, then there are actual moral obligations and hence it is reasonable to act morally.

a) If heaven/hell has no effect on your morality (you are not good just because of heaven/hell) how then can you say that the afterlife has effect on moral obligations?

b) IF....it is a big if.
Religion / Re: When We Die! by TheBigUrban2: 9:00am On Sep 08, 2014
MrAnony1:
I hope you do realize that a response to stimuli and consciousness are in totally different categories. For instance, a mango tree responds to stimuli but is not necessarily conscious. A dreaming man is conscious of his dreams though he may not necessarily respond to external stimuli.
P/s: I am still awaiting a response to my comments on the first page of this thread here:
https://www.nairaland.com/1886955/when-die#26034521
I would like us to have a conversation on the points I raised. I hope you didn't mention me in the OP only to have me ignored.

False. A tree is conscious. A sleeping man is semi-conscious. A sleeping man can still respond to stimuli in his semi-conscious state

musKeeto: Not ashamed of anything. In fact, much grateful for the experience.

I learnt to work among different types and classes of nigerian christians within Nigeria. I was exposed to the hypocrisy that exists within the system.

So when I attack Xtianity on NL, I do so with first hand experience.

I've met people who fear anyone who bears 'pastor'... Most Nigerians seek solutions to ALL problems from their pastors, be it marriage, education, health etc.. And where these men are incapable of providing a solution, they resort to deliverance, fasting, prayer and other unnecessary rituals...

Nigerians have to understand that most of our problems are more manmade than spiritual, that neither the Bible nor the Holy Spirit should negate common sense and reason..

I totally agree with fact that butter should be refrigerated. Nigerian butters don't do well without being kept in the fridge.

Naturally, I hate fats and oily foods, which means it's mayonnaise for me.

By the way, are you an anti-blueband fan?

Yes, I like toasted sandwich and blueband is one of the worst for sandwich toasting

Is the temperature inside the car with windows closed room temperature?

Stop arguing and sounding silly? You should be blamed for putting butter in such a hot location

You ignored all the other points to defend blueband butter? Are you that local?

You also forget that your kitchen can reach the same temperature if you lock all the windows and doors on a sunny day in Nigeria. Its even worse if you have a sun roof/skylight in your kitchen.

texanomaly:

Myth: Butter Spoils if Not Refrigerated
False. Butter does spoil, but much more slowly than fresh (unfermented) milk products, such as, well, milk. The reason? “Most butter contains added salt, which impedes the growth of spoilage bacteria,” says John Bruhn, a dairy-foods processing specialist at the University of California at Davis. Today’s salted butter, in normal usage, will rarely spoil, even if you leave it unrefrigerated all the time. Unsalted butter might spoil in about a week, but it contains enough natural salt to slow the growth of bacteria that cause spoiling. So you don’t have to worry if you forget to put the butter away after dinner.
