CareerRe: If I Were Linda Ikeji, Why I Wouldn’t Buy A Range Rover Sport With $153,000! by TheCode(m): 11:06pm On Sep 28, 2014
Na wah o. The guy that wrote that article is only trying to gain popularity in a cheap way. So he has weighed Linda's business/investment portfolio and found it wanting? His article reeks of envy, jealousy and bitterness... abi e dey pain am say she hammer with free blogging platform? How many articles has he written against all the millionaires and billionaires of this world who possess costlier cars, private jets, yatches, etc? Are they not entrepreneurs too? Abi he expects Linda to be 'holier'? why? because she is a Nigerian? Why cant some people thank God for the good that comes to others? Well, he may keep taking her panadol while she lives the life - she worked real hard for it. What she does is by no means easy and she deserves to spoil herself a bit every now and then. That is life. You work, you play. This is a lady that even gives out money to her blog visitors at planned intervals. Haba!! I am now wondering if this article wasn't written by a very bitter ex-boyfriend...

xfire: Thanks for your understanding too. I appreciate.
I now refrain from answering questions concerning the oil and gas industry here. There are many oil and gas threads on the career section and such questions can be adequately treated in those threads. Or you may send a private mail to me. I will advise accordingly.

This thread is open to all that aspire to achieve a great career and live a life of fulfillment, irrespective of the industry they may be or aim to be. To ensure that we remain on track and maintain the purpose of this thread, I will rather focus on responding to general questions relating to jobs, careers, capacity enhancement, scholarships and education.

To God be the glory!

Cheers.....!

CareerRe: The Best Engineering Course To Study In Nigeria by TheCode(m): 9:50pm On Sep 09, 2014
GodswillAJudins: Pls I need ur advice as I don't want to end up regretting my decision on the engineering path to follow, I would like a degree that can gv me great opportunity to penetrate the oil and gas industry and also give opportunity in other areas( broad field). I think I can feet in in any field of engineering cause am good technically and love working hard, that's why I dint do post ume on the medical line in other to go for were my passion lies(engineering) through Predegree.
So ur advice is greatly needed. Thanks
Chemical Engineering
Electrical/Electronic Engineering
Mechanical Engineering

To 'penetrate' the oil industry, what class of degree you make is usually more important than what you read. A first class or 2.1 in polymer engineering is better than a 2.2 in chemical or mechanical engineering, so know your strengths and choose wisely. Go for what you have the most aptitude for, not the name or popularity. I hope you are very good in mathematics, and no, chemical engineering isn't about chemistry: it's mainly about mathematical models.

babystathopoulos: Extra things to do:
1. Be that patient student, this not the time to bother yourself about where you wish to work. finish your first degree and make sure you actually graduate with a 2.1
2. Be that patient reader, go back to page 0 and read every comments, there are so many useful contributions that has directly and indirectly addressed your question

@all asking questions on what to study, read if possible eat to work in an oil and gas company are just bunch of lazy people. The op took his time to research and came up with this list of demanding jobs in IOC. Google is your friend you can find out anything you need to know about how your course relate to jobs in IOC

N.B. To get a job in an IOC fairly, you must be highly intelligent to pass through the stages of the recruitment
U don take am personal? grin

Of a truth some questions have become irritating as they have been answered time and again in earlier pages of this thread. If you just stumbled across this thread, please take the time to read through the entire thing from page 0 before asking your questions or making your contributions - the world would become a better place, believe me wink

Please don't just read page 0, then jump to the penultimate page and then the last page... come on guys, that's not the 2014 Oxford awon boys/babes definition of being smart
CareerRe: 5 Places To Start Career In Nigeria by TheCode(m): 3:59pm On Sep 05, 2014
Hmmm... of a truth, common sense is not as common as the name implies. I dont know why many people failed to comprehend the message jarus was passing across. Besides phonon and some other smart people judging by their posts, the rest have just been saying what my dad would call 'bla-bla'.

The op mentioned 5 places that would be great for one to start ones career and gave his reasons. He also mentioned that his list is baised towards non-technical graduates (only shell would interest most graduate-level engineers on that list). HE NEVER SAID if you don't start with these, you are done. HE NEVER SAID these are the best or top 5. HE NEVER SAID they pay the highest - 'pay' wasn't even a criterion for his list. Phew.

For those saying there are no jobs, we have been hearing it like forever yet some people are still getting employed by merit every year into those big IOCs and MNCs that most people only dream of.

It is similar to some lamenting that admission into good Nigerian universities by merit is impossible, yet I and many others in my time made the first list and got admitted to read our respective courses of choice without knowing even the gateman.

It's all about competition, no one would offer you a job (or anything competitive for that matter) till you demonstrate you are better than the other person. So please, stop whining and make concerted efforts to develop yourself into a 'must-have' individual or (early) professional.

For those preaching entrepreneurship as if it is a gateway to freedom from hardwork, work-related stress, financial stress and long hours, please do not be deceived.

Every real and serious entrepreneur puts in much more. You dont just open a business today and start relaxing and raking in cash the next. A lot of people that think this way, and always having something cheeky to say to those who opt to commence their career by getting employed somewhere, are usually entrepreneurs in theory only and grossly misinformed. The rest are unserious.

Whether you are working for yourself or for someone, the truth is that you will have to work real hard in the beginning, but later you will get more relaxed.

Also, to be a successful entrepreneur, u need the experience and the capital. That is why some decide to get a salaried job first.

You can be working and running something else on the side (even something as simple as owning your own blog). That is also entrepreneurship. You wouldn't believe the amount of work that goes into maintaining ones personal blog.

If you are led to start something of your own from the start, great! Go ahead but don't think it will be a bed of roses, don't think your mates who opted to become employees first have inferior intellects or have made a wrong choice for Africa, and don't feel superhuman yet (not just yet). Be aware that some start and fail and that competition is in every endeavour, so make up your mind to fight and stand out.

Please let us read and comment with wisdom. If you don't understand the thread, ask for clarification or look for another thread instead of saying 'bla-bla'.

Nothing personal.

Cheers.

Syenite: Y do u think they'll want to put u in an administrative position. Let me advice u, don't get carried away. First work hard to ensure u finish with ur first class. And note that the hard work does nt stop in school. There are numerous first class graduates out there still searching for job. A first class is nt a guarantee, u still have to compete mostly with 2:1 graduates who are almost equally smart. No complacency bro.
Your posts reek of wisdom bro cool

ProgrammingPlease How Do I Transform My Python Codes To A Cross-platform Mobile App??? by TheCode(op): 8:12am On Sep 03, 2014
Hi Everyone, especially the Python-ninjas, Python-gurus, Python-monks, and any other knowledgeable tech-master out there -

I wrote some codes in Python that performs a basic task (a series of simple calculations). My aim is to transform it into a mobile app with a user-friendly interface (nice big buttons, simple looking, you know the works wink ) so people would be able to appreciate my code.

Most people develop (at best) sweaty palms when they see the python environment or any MS Dos-looking environment for that matter, which is why it has become pertinent for me to transform the codes into a 'friendly' looking mobile app with friendly big buttons while my codes do the hard work from behind the scenes.

I anticipate your knowledgeable replies with gratitude... smiley

Mcslize: xfire,
thanks for this thread, I want to know those related courses one can do for master's degree for someone that had a Bsc degree in chemical Engineering.
Like the above mentioned areas like Subsea Engineering and Drilling Engineering which is more suitable for a graduate of Chemical Engineering who wants to proceed to a master level?

gudrated: There are entry level positions in oil firms na. I came in as a procurement analyst fresh from school. Most reputable coys have graduate programs. People overrate the influence of connections, bro... cry
Exactly. Nepotism may be prevalent in the industry to a degree but it has not infiltrated every nook and cranny of recruitment processes, and shall not because it is not even in the interest of any serious corporation (for obvious reasons). Meritocracy still holds sway in any respectable institution or corporation. The competition may be stiffer than before, and shall get stiffer still, but entry by merit shall always be there. Do not listen to some pessimists or conspiracy theorists who go about preaching doom to fellow graduates who, like most of us, have no 'oga-at-the-top'. I believe one can get there if one remains focused, remains prepared, pursue the right information and listen to people of like minds/vision. Gudrated, xfire, darellrivers, jarus, etc, etc, remain living testimonies...

my two pence... no b say i sabi pass... wink

Chuxchudi: How do you get the required experience when you need the job to gather experience? At some point, one would require "oga @ d top" connectionz to get in.
