Foreign Affairs / The Old World Is Over: Key Takeaways From Putin's First Major Speech by TheFreeOne: 9:22pm On Jun 17, 2022
The old world is over: Key takeaways from Putin's first major speech since Russia's military offensive in Ukraine

Russian leader has buried the old world order and outlined his view on Russia’s and the world’s future, in a key address

New centers of power have emerged, the unipolar world order isn’t coming back, and the “colonial” way of thinking has failed, Russian President Vladimir Putin told the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) on Friday, in what the Kremlin described as an “extremely important” speech.

The old world order is gone with the wind
When the US declared victory in the Cold War, Americans designated themselves the “messengers of God on earth,” with interests that should be considered sacred and no obligations, Putin told the audience at SPIEF. New centers of power have since emerged, and have the right to protect their own systems, economic models and sovereignty.
These “truly revolutionary, tectonic changes in geopolitics, the global economy, in the technological sphere, in the entire system of international relations,” are “fundamental, pivotal and inexorable,” Putin said. “And It is a mistake to suggest that one can wait out the times of turbulent change and that things will return to normal; that everything will be as it was. It will not.”

Anti-Russian sanctions backfired on the West
When the US and its allies launched the campaign to “cancel” Russia over the conflict in Ukraine, they hoped to crash and undermine the Russian economy and society. The sanctions have instead boomeranged on their creators, aggravating social and economic problems, driving up the cost of food, electricity and fuel, and hurting the quality of life across the West, but especially in Europe.
“The European Union has completely lost its political sovereignty, and its bureaucratic elites are dancing to someone else’s tune, accepting whatever they are told from above, causing harm to their own population and their own economy,” Putin said.
EU citizens will pay the price for “decisions divorced from reality and taken contrary to common sense,” he added, as direct losses from the sanctions alone could exceed $400 billion in a year.

Energy prices and inflation are self-inflicted
Blaming the high energy prices and inflation in the West on Russia – “Putin’s price hike,” as the White House put it – is a “stupidity” and “designed for people who can’t read or write,” the Russian president said.
“Don’t blame us, blame yourselves,” Putin said.
The EU “blindly believing in renewable sources” and abandoning long-term natural gas contracts with Russia led to the spike in energy prices last year, according to the Russian leader. Meanwhile, both the US and the EU addressed the Covid-19 pandemic by printing trillions of dollars and euros.

Elite change’ awaits the West
Policies undertaken by EU and US leaders are exacerbating inequalities and divisions in their societies, not just in terms of welfare but in terms of values and orientations of various groups, Putin said.
“Such a detachment from reality, from the demands of society, will inevitably lead to a surge of populism and the growth of radical movements, to serious social and economic changes, to degradation and, in the near future, to a change of elites,” the Russian leader said.

If there’s a famine, it won’t be Russia’s fault

US and EU sanctions against Russia – in particular fertilizer and grain exports – are one of the reasons for growing global food insecurity, Putin pointed out. If there is famine in the world’s poorest countries, “this will be entirely on the conscience of the US administration and the European bureaucracy."

Troubles with food supply have arisen over the past several years – not months – due to the “short-sighted actions of those who are accustomed to solving their problems at someone else's expense,” distorting the trade flows by printing money in a sort of “predatory colonial policy,” Putin said.

Russia is ready to send food to Africa and the Middle East, where the threat of famine is most acute, but faces “logistical, financial, transport” obstacles imposed by the West, he said.

Reasons for the Ukraine conflict

Russia sent troops into Ukraine in February because the West refused to abide by its obligations, and it was “simply impossible to reach any new agreements with them,” Putin said. The decision was “forced, but necessary,” as Russia had every right as a sovereign country to defend its security and protect its citizens and residents of Donbass from “genocide by the Kiev regime and neo-Nazis who received the full protection of the West."

The West spent years turning Ukraine into an “anti-Russia” state and pumping it with weapons and military advisers, Putin said, pointing out they “did not give a damn” about Ukraine’s economy or the lives of its people, but “spared no expense to create a NATO foothold in the east, directed against Russia, to cultivate aggression, hatred and Russophobia."

“All the objectives of the special military operation will be unconditionally achieved,” Putin said.

Economic development is an expression of sovereignty

In the 21st century, sovereignty can’t be partial, Putin argued. All of its elements are equally important and complement each other, and the economy is one of them. There are five key principles Russia will follow in economic development: Openness, freedom, social justice, infrastructure, and technological sovereignty.

Russia will “never follow the path of self-isolation and autarky,” but will expand interactions with anyone who wishes to trade, Putin said, adding there are “many such countries.” Moscow will also support private enterprise, build and repair its transportation infrastructure, seek to reduce social inequality, and ensure its key technologies are not dependent on foreign imports.

“Truly sovereign states are always committed to equal partnerships,” while “those who are weak and dependent, as a rule, are busy looking for enemies, planting xenophobia, or finally losing their originality, independence, blindly following the overlord,” he said.

Both candidates are bad faces of same coin.

Nigeria needs to get beyond the shenanigans of choosing selfish and corrupt individuals to lead the country in dire need of healing, security, economic development and infrastructures.

Until we start working towards fairness, justice and inclusiveness then having a peaceful and united country will always be a mirage.

A new restructed political system in alignment with the regions is what we need to truly develop and prosper as a nation.

Try to talk to a Northerner from NW or NC. They do not like Atiku. It's not about propaganda; Try to confirm yourself. Most Northerners call him a thief who has never sacrificed anything for others.

Only the core tribalists will vote Atiku in the North. As long as they want a united Nigeria, they will vote for a Southerner they trust. Emphasis on Trust. Tinubu is the only Southerner the North feel they owe and should trust. Let's leave sentiments and bitterness apart; He's the only one Governors and Northern billionaires will genuinely work for and he has a better record of performance than Atiku. Don't believe online rants, talk to true Northerners and see.

I am not a mouthpiece for Atiku but if he is not loved in the North how come he came second during last election with the number of votes he got. And hope you are aware there are serious allegations of APC rigging buhari to power in 2019. And have you forgotten what APC did to former CJN Onnoghen and the insinuation of the reason for such?

And what about corruption allegations against Tinubu, health issues and the religious angle cos he's a Muslim and will majority of Northerners support a northern Christian VP? Wouldn't it be it better for him to support an Osinbajo candidacy?

As per performance there are other capable politicians. I believe South East should produce the next president and Peter Obi candidacy isn't a bad idea but I fear Labour Party doesn't have the structure to make it happen within the time frame.

I am Yoruba, not aligned to any political party or politician but If I have to vote for a Presidential candidate it will be Peter Obi as it consider it the right thing.

Recent infos, allegations of GEJ romance and meetings with APC leadership is pointer to a likelihood of northern support for his comeback but Atiku's emergence is a game changer. And like I opined are we sure APC North won't prefer Atiku to a southern candidate?

Anyway let's see as the game pans out

The low self esteem most Southerners display when politics is being discussed is sickening.

You're making the north what they are not indirectly. We are all joint partners in this country and not some master-slave arrangement.

These guys disgust me.

Agreed we are all joint partners but do Southerners have a common front?

It is Southern unity that can make naija a better place and I am a proponent of restructuring but the reality is we'll continue to make the North what they aren't until we unite with one voice.
Politics / Re: 2023 Zoning Battle: I Will Resign As PDP Leader If… — Iyorchia Ayu by TheFreeOne: 4:17pm On May 29, 2022
Like it's said in local parlance Northerners Don run Southerners street. cheesy

Below is my opinion on 2023 elections

Atiku - Peter Obi for a PDP win.
He's a strong candidate with political tentacles spread across the country. He'll pacify Ohaneze to bring back Peter Obi to PDP for block SE votes

Osinbajo - Northern Vp if Buhari / APC genuinely wants its own candidate to win.
However I think APC Northern faction will work for Atiku becoming president in order to retain power in the North thereby destroying the party for new realignments in PDP.

Tambuwal stepping down for Atiku is a pointer to the fact that Northerners always supports their own unlike Southerners disunity.

The other option is for GEJ's return to power through APC ticket as he's another Southern candidate and a Christian whom the North considers trustworthy, ran a better government that the disaster of Buhari administration even though they humiliated him out of power. But it will be foolish of him to consider such option.

As far as 2023 is concerned Northern politicians are only after power and wouldn't mind destroying APC to get it.

In conclusion a Northern APC Presidential candidate shouldn't be ruled out as it will be a win win and a masterstroke checkmate as things are now. The North has perfected everything as far as 2003 is concerned as there's no stopping them now.

Southerners are now at the mercy of Northern politicians. Don't blame them but the foolish politicians from the South.

FakeUnity:
I listened to Reuben Abati this morning on Arise TV and shook my head on how low one can go in brown envelop journalism.

Reuben Abati was formerly in the camp of GEJ and by extention PDP and wrote severally about the tyranny of buhari and his cohorts.

Suddenly, just suddenly after Reuben Abati was recently granted entrance into Aso rock to interview buhari as an AriseTv journalist on the IPOB issue and other sundry national issues, he became pro-buhari, pro-malami, pro-lie mohammed, pro-fulani.

I shook my head this morning in pity as I listened to him sycophantly praise the pseudo-illiterate AGF Malami for responding to Canadian Justice Minister in Alberta Kaycee Madu. He called Malami's infantile rejoinder a 'perfect response whose writer deserves bottle of champaign'. Tufiakwa!

One cannot but wonder how the fat envelop he got for 'transport fare' after his interview with buhari could have been. How many wads of dollar bills were in that envelop, as I am sure buhari and co-habitants in aso rock do not spend the naira.

Verily Verily, the man has a price and could even be eyeing a return to Aso rock to take Femi Adesina's job that he once held with all the largess and trappings of power that came with the office.

Like a columnist once wrote 'Reuben Abati is dead', not that he has entered the grave to the great beyond, No!
Abati has a deadened conscience, and may soon make AriseTV an appendage of the government just like lacklustre NTA, all for his personal goal of returning to the corridors of power.

Like he once opined, he misses those days when his phones ring non-stop as a media adviser to President GEJ.

I watched same interview and wondered why his recent tilt towards the government but i think he's just trying to be rational regarding national issues in order to balance opinions on the Arise morning shows.

Rufai Oseni is my no.1 TV news analyst at the moment cos he has gut in speaking truth to power anyday.
