themonk: Switzerland to return $321 million of stolen money to Nigeria By Kieron Monks, CNN
Updated 7:46 AM ET, Wed December 6, 2017 The Nigerian government has now reclaimed over $1 billion believed stolen by former President General Sani Abacha The Nigerian government has now reclaimed over $1 billion believed stolen by former President General Sani Abacha Story highlights Swiss government reclaimed funds from the family of former President Sani Abacha. Abacha accused of stealing over $4 billion during his five years in office World Bank will oversee dispersal of funds, including on social programs
The Swiss government is to return $321 million to Nigeria that was seized from the family of former President Sani Abacha.
The assets were confiscated and repatriated as part of criminal proceedings against Abba Abacha, son of Sani, who ruled Nigeria for five years until his death in 1998. Nigerian investigators believe the former president stole more than $4 billion during his time in office.
The Swiss government released a statement Monday announcing that agreement had been reached with officials from the Nigerian government and the World Bank on the terms of restitution. "The restitution of funds will take place within the framework of a project supported and overseen by the World Bank," the statement said. "The project will strengthen social security for the poorest sections of the Nigerian population." The government of Nigeria made its own statement thanking international partners and vowing to continue its anti-corruption drive, a core policy of President Muhammadu Buhari's administration. "We are grateful for the international support we're getting in the fight against corruption. Global collaboration is critical to the success of the fight...We will continue to work to deepen mechanisms not just for asset recovery but for preventing corruption in the first place." Switzerland has already recovered around $700 million of Abacha-related assets to date. Nigeria is also pursuing $480 million that has been seized in the US, but faces a laborious legal process to reclaim it. Nigeria is one of four countries being prioritized for asset recovery assistance at the inaugural Global Forum on Asset Recovery, currently being held in Washington DC. The country lost $400 billion to corruption between 1960 and 1999, according to estimates cited by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

Seun: I do not understand why marine spirits would want to drink blood. It is physical in nature, has no nutritional value, and is not tasty. If I were a marine spirit, I’d be more excited by accidents involving trailer loads of orange juice. Rich in calories and vitamin C, and tasty. By the way, I think road accidents would fall under the jurisdiction of terrestrial spirits. Marine spirits would live in water if they actually existed, right?

tosyne2much: Hahaha.. We no dey fight bro so calm down
Isn't it funny that you don't believe in God but you can see a part of yourself calling his name in time of affliction? I'm not an atheist. I'm agnostic, i believe there is a possiblity of a god and i also believe there is a possiblity of none. Funny enough being an agnostic who even believes in the possiblity of a god, i cannot remember the last time i prayed even back then in the university when i was depressed at one time for so many months. I just knew it was life pushing me to figure out what was wrong and solve it. And i did figure it out and it worked. Most people do not want to think hard about their problems so they go the easy way which is praying and that provides psychological consolation but rarely solves the problem, in my experience never solves the problem. Some people say prayers work for them, who am i to doubt them? Is it my experience? I do what works for me because i trust my experience more than that of people out there which may be lying to themselves. |

Pataricatering: I and my sister are atheists and we still say things like thank God , God forbid etc not because we believe but because we were religious types for the first 30 years of our lives and these exclamations became habit ! I won’t change my vocabulary because I don’t believe in God anymore - that would be silly ! You dont need to explain further to him, the part of his brain that should understand what you are saying is either permanently shut down, non-existent or obliterated. You can see that his interpretation of what you said is that "you are sitting on the fence" Its very tasking to reason with most of them, i salute people on nairaland who even engage in argument with them everytime. |
Christianity Etc › Re: Why Is It That People Remember God When In Trouble? by themonk(m): 11:27am On Dec 03, 2017 |
tosyne2much: This is not the matter of logic reasoning sir.. He said Atheists might shout the word "Jesus" in their subconscious state not because they believe it will save them from dangers but because their minds have already been accustomed to saying things like that probably when they were still theists which might be hard to do away with.
What you have failed to understand is that, would you be u deny the fact that many people are fond of calling pastors to pray for them, repent and confess their sins when on their dying bed? I wouldnt doubt that many people call their pastors to pray for them in their death bed but i would contend that any atheist would call a pastor to pray for him/her in his/her death bed. Reason being that doing that defeats your label as an atheist. |
Christianity Etc › Re: Why Is It That People Remember God When In Trouble? by themonk(m): 11:17am On Dec 03, 2017 |
tosyne2much: I guess he doesn't believe Athiests call on Jesus when there's no other way out This is the the problem with religious people, even after the logical explanation hozier and hopefullandlord gave to you, you still couldn't counter any of them with solid reasoning. The same way freeze even proved tithing wrong from your own religious bible and some people attack his person instead of the logic he brought forward. Is it that you guys are not capable of logic or good reasoning? I dont just understand. |

NwaAmaikpe:

Sam Dede.
Fine dude, I still remember visiting his office back then in University of Port Harcourt. This were men who redefined Nollywood, his acting was top notch not like that of puppets like Walter Anga.
Despite his good acting skills I forever see him as the senseless Pyrate Confraternity member who came to Oputa Panel to seek redress for being treated like a cultist.
Pretty wife, Ugly kids. NwaChibuzor13: With all those children, I don't think the wife p***y will be tight and have good grip again. If I were Sam, I will just go and marry another wife. I have a friend whose wife had all their kids through caesarean . I called him one side and told him its his advantage because the toto will still be intact. This month they will celebrate their 7 yr anniversary. A tight p***y is the bedrock of a good relationship. Chaiii, how on earth did i discover nairaland? Was i searching for a psychiatric hospital?
