Following the decision not to indict the officer who choked Eric Garner, some white users on Twitter showed support to the black community in sharing their own racism stories leading to the trending hashtag #CrimingWhileWhite. Timelines filled up with stories from white Twitter users, pointing out times they should’ve been arrested, but were let off without consequence.

This is the latest example of people pointing out the racial profiling in today’s society, which have been heavily publicized following the Eric Garner and Michael Brown cases.

(Reuters) - North Korea has ordered people who share the name of leader Kim Jong Un to change their names, South Korea's state-run KBS television reported on Wednesday.

North Korea imposed similar bans on the use of the names of its two former leaders, Kim's father, Kim Jong Il, and grandfather, Kim Il Sung, as part of propaganda drives to build cults of personality around them.

Kim Jong Un's name is not allowed for newborns and people who share the name must not just stop using it but must change it on their birth certificates and residence registrations, KBS reported, citing an official North Korean directive.

Kim Jong Il, the father of the current leader, issued the order in 2011, when his son was heir apparent, KBS said. The elder Kim died in December that year and his son took power.

South Korea's Unification Ministry, which handles ties with the North, could not immediately confirm the report but said it was plausible.

"The ban is highly possible since North Korea had the same policy in the era of Kim Jong Il and Kim Il Sung," a ministry official said.

It is true that when the devil pushes a man, he pushes the man to his downfall. This is clearly the story of a robbery suspect, Edward Nnaji who claimed to be a movie actor and played a role in a film titled Friday Night and also the music director at Christ Embassy Church, Zone 1, Idimangoro Parish, Agege, Lagos.

The 25-year-old man alongside two of his alleged accomplices were arrested two years after they allegedly conspired with others to kidnap a female banker, Popoola Morenikeji, and collected the sum of N5 million as ransom before they set her free.
According to the police, reports that the suspects kidnapped the victim at Amuwo Odofin area of Mile 2, Lagos close to her residence when she stepped out of her vehicle to buy something and took her to an uncompleted building in a bush at Mowe area of Ogun State. They tied her legs and hands and kept her for four days until a ransom was paid before they set her free. The suspects reportedly set the victim free after her family members paid the sum of N5 million as ransom.
The suspects, according to the police, also sold the victim’s Toyota Corolla car valued at N1.8 million for N250,000 to David Nwangboe (now at large). They also sold all the jewellery and
handsets of the victim valued at N2 million and shared the loot.

Other suspects arrested in connection with the crime include Osas Osagie, 23, from Ogbe village, Oredo LGA of Edo State and Patrick Donatus Jackson, 29, who resides at 13, Famuyiwa Street, Idimangoro, Agege, Lagos, and hails from Akwa Ibom State. One of the suspects simply called Jek is also at large.

However, nemesis caught up with the arrested suspects two years after they allegedly perpetrated the act on August 1, 2014. The alleged ring leader, Nnaji regrouped with others and sent a threat to life text message to the victim to send N150,000 into their account for recharge card, with a warning that if she failed to send the money, they will trail her this time around and eliminate her. The banker immediately sent a petition to the Inspector general of Police after receiving the sms to save her from the kidnappers.
The Commissioner of Police Federal SARS, DCP Chris Ezike, took the matter up and deployed a team led by Inspector Oluwemimo Banjoko to fish out the suspects and they were arrested in Lagos and Edo states.

The suspects have however been charged before an Igbosere Magistrates’ court, Lagos on a four-count charge of felony to wit, armed robbery. The offenses the police prosecutor, Supol Charles Odii said, are punishable under section 6 b, 1, 2(A) and b of the Robbery and Firearms Act and sections 269(1)(2)(3) and 270 of the criminal laws of Lagos state, 2011.

Just how big a hit was “Gangnam Style”? So mammoth that the Internet literally wasn’t ready to handle it.

YouTube said that the 2012 song by South Korea’s Psy — accompanied by a horse-riding-like dance that became a global sensation — this week reached the maximum number of views that its counter had imagined to be conceivable.psy-gangnam

The video-sharing site shows that the official version of the video has had more than 2.15 billion views — the equivalent of one-third of the world’s population, although of course many people watched more than once.
The problem: YouTube designed its counter with what is known in computer science as a 32-bit integer, meaning that the maximum number of countable views was 2,147,483,647.
“We never thought a video would be watched in numbers greater than a 32-bit integer,” YouTube, which is owned by search engine giant Google, said in a posting on Google+.

YouTube engineers anticipated the problem and upgraded to a 64-bit integer. That means that “Gangnam Style” or future mega-hit videos can now go beyond nine sextillion views — a feat that, at least according to conventional wisdom, would be impossible to break.

A news platform, ‘TheCapital’ has reported that Oyamuyefa Alamieyeseigha, son of a former Governor of Bayelsa State, Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, died of a drug overdose.

Oyamuyefa Alamieyeseigha lost his life on Saturday, October 11, in Dubai, UAE. The initial report of Oyayumefa’s death stated that he was found dead by the staircase in his father’s house in Dubai, UAE, which led many to believe and assume that he was murdered.

But the news platform claims to have exclusively gathered that “excessive consumption of a banned substance was responsible for the untimely death of the 24-year old.”

According to the report, Oyamuyefa collapsed after allegedly taking a drug overdose which reacted in his system and led to his death.

The site alleged that “a source revealed that the Alamieyeseighas have been hiding the truth from the public to save them the embarrassment likely to be caused by the revelation.”

The report further stated that Oyamuyefa lived a flamboyant lifestyle as a student before his death.

A day after the Somali Islamist group al-Shabab killed 36 quarry workers in Kenya's north-eastern region of Mandera, the media is urging the Kenyan government to review its security policies.

Two newspapers warn that Kenya faces a "serious Boko-Haram type problem", while another calls for the army's withdrawal from Somalia.

The media are still conveying shock and outrage about the killings, with many front pages showing pictures of the dead men laying face down on the ground, and blood pouring from their heads.

"Kenya has a serious Boko-Haram type problem in the making," says an editorial in the top-selling, influential Daily Nation.

It suggests that the Kenyan government has fundamentally misunderstood today's al-Shabab, arguing that "the presumption that this is a foreign invading force is no longer sustainable. Al-Shabab has morphed into a local, jihadist insurrection led principally by Kenyans born and bred in the places now under attack".

Over the past months, many Kenyans have demanded that the country withdraw its troops from Somalia. Some Kenyan papers agree. Al-Shabab has repeatedly said that Kenya's involvement in Somalia is the main reason for its attacks.

The Star newspaper, which often takes a bold editorial stand, suggests that the army should be redeployed throughout north-eastern Kenya to secure the border. "Security and intelligence systems must be restored to functional and efficient levels before the country slides into a Nigeria Boko-Haram-like mess," the paper says

"Businesses, especially in the tourism sector, are suffering and we must not allow multi-billion shilling investments to go to waste simply because we cannot get our act right in improving security," the Business Daily says.

Commentator Jaindi Kisero, writing in the Daily Nation, urges Kenya's leadership "to engage in national introspection. If we do not restore peace in northern Kenya quickly, then all those clever economic blueprints we have been churning out will be worthless".

A Special Purpose Vehicle, NATCOM Consortium, on Wednesday offered to pay $252.25m for the Nigerian Telecommunications Limited and its mobile subsidiary, the Nigerian Mobile Telecommunications Limited.

With no competitor, and with the offer meeting the reserve price set for the telecommunication companies, NATCOM stands as the potential core investor in the beleaguered public telecommunications companies.

Two more hurdles, however, are ahead to be cleared. First, the bid has to be approved by the National Council on Privatisation chaired by Vice President Namadi Sambo; and the second is the consortium should be able to pay within the specified time.

The other firm that had been prequalified for the exercise, NETTAG Consortium, was disqualified for failure to enclose a bid bond stipulated by the Request for Proposal prepared by the Bureau of Public Enterprises.

At the first bid, NATCOM offered a bid of $221m which was said to be lower than the reserve price. It was therefore asked to reverse the bid and in the second round, it offered the winning bid of $252.25m.

NATCOM is an SPV formed for the purpose of acquisition of NITEL and M-Tel. The consortium is made up of shareholders – NATSPACE Telecommunication Investment Limited, PCCW Global Limited and Prime Union Investment Limited.

Other members of the consortium are Prime Union Investment Limited, Olutoyl Estate Development & Services Limited, Sahara Energy Resources Limited, Legal Resources Alliance & Co and LM Ericsson Nigeria Limited.

With the exception of LM Ericsson Nigeria Limited, all the other members of the consortium are equity holders with Prime Union and Olutoyl Estate holding 30 per cent equity each. LM Ericsson is a technical partner to the group.

Four of the equity holders, Prime Union Investment Limited, Olutoyl Estate Development & Services, Legal Resources Alliance & Co and Natspace Telecommunication Investment Limited with a combined equity of 80 per cent of the consortium are linked to businessman, Dr. Olatunde Ayeni.

The Executive Commissioner, Nigerian Communications Commission, Mr. Okechukwu Itanyi, said with the privatisation, the hope of Nigerians for diversified telecommunications industry had been rekindled.

He said NITEL had the resources and pedigree to bring back landlines and champion broadband revolution in the country.

Past attempts to sell the First National Operator in the last 13 years had reportedly been marred by insincerity and manipulation of the process by government officials and private sector operators.

Hearing in the suit filed by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, seeking to commit the Inspector-General of Police to prison for alleged contempt of court was Thursday, stalled by the people of Kebbe/Tambuwal Federal Constituency of Sokoto State who filed an application for stay of proceedings.

The Speaker had filed the suit at a Federal High Court following alleged attempts to declare his seat vacant and the withdrawal of his security details following his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party, the party on whose platform he was elected as the Speaker of the House.

The proceedings was, however, stalled after the Speaker’s constituent, through their lawyers, informed the court that they had filed two separate applications for stay of proceedings in the suit.

Their applications for stay of proceedings were hinged on the notices of appeal filed against the ruling of the court which on Monday disallowed them to be joined as defendants in the suit.

Tambuwal’s lawyer, however, asked the court to adjourn the matter to enable him respond to the applications for stay of proceedings filed by the parties seeking to be joined.

Lawyers to defendants opposed the application for adjournment.

Justice Ahmed Mohammed adjourned the case to December 9 for hearing of applications seeking leave to appeal, stay of proceedings and the one seeking an order compelling the Inspector-General of Police to appear in court.

Ex-President, General Ibrahim Babangida (IBB) has urged Nigerians to defend themselves against Boko Haram sect members.

He also called for Jihad against the sect members.

According to him, there’s nothing wrong if people who are attacked prepare for self-defence, arguing that the act could be regarded as Jihad. IBB stated this in an interview with the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) Hausa, on Monday night. While condemning the Kano central mosque bombings and commiserating with the government and people of the state, IBB lauded the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Lamido Sanusi, for calling for prayers and fasting for peace to reign. He, however, assured that the Nigerian military has the ability to end the insurgency.

A 28-year-old woman, Mirian Ndubuisi, was on Tuesday arraigned in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for a vicious assault on a co-tenant.

The accused, a business woman who resides at 18, Odolowu St., Ijesha, Lagos State, is facing a two count of conspiracy and aggravated assault.

She pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against her.

The prosecutor, ASP Eranus Nnamonu, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on October 12 at their residence.

Nnamonu said that a fight broke out between the two tenants who had previously been at loggerheads.

He said the complainant had alleged that the defendant’s attempt to eliminate him had resulted in the death of the defendant’s son.

“A scuffle ensued between Ndubusi and the complainant, one Phillip Eze, over his declaration in church while giving a testimony that the complainant’s son death was as a result of her intentions toward him.

“During the fight, Ndubusi bit one of Eze’s arms and his scrotum, leaving deep lacerations there ,” Nnamonu said.

He said that the offences contravened Sections 171 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Section 171 of the law prescribes that any person who unlawfully assaults another and thereby does him harm is guilty of a felony and is liable to imprisonment for three years.

The Magistrate, Mrs A.R. Onilogbo, admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the matter to December 11 for mention.

Goods worth millions of naira have been destroyed in an inferno that gutted the Rivers state Newlayout Market in town axis of Port Harcourt.

The course of the fire is still unknown but DAILY POST gathered that the fire disaster occurred around 8pm (Tuesday night).

Chairman of the market, Jack Robinson said the fire may have started with a spark from one of the shops after power was restored.

Robinson also said the fire started from Lane 2 of the market.

An obviously devastated victim of the inferno said: “I got a call that fire was burning in our market, then me and my children ran there immediately. I got there and I was looking at how my shop was burning. My supermarket has finished. I am finished. I have been crying. I don’t know what to do again.

An eyewitness said, “many of them just returned from Onitsha and Aba to refill their stores and this kind of thing has happened. This fire disaster happens every year. We don’t know what to do, I don tire.”

Meanwhile, the Rivers state Government said the state government was worried why there is recurrence of inferno engulfing major markets every year.

State Commissioner for Special Duties, Dickson Omunakwe in an interview with DAILY POST said the Ministry has been proactive in sensitizing traders and shop owners to maintain high safety standards.

Omunakwe said averting a fire outbreak was not only the responsibility of government, stressing that it is multi-dimensional.

He expressed sadness at the incident but assured that investigations will be carried out before government will take any action.

According to him, “First of all, we will investigate the cause of the incident and then when we finish with our investigation, we will have an informed opinion of what to do.

Asaba based music producer, Micheal Okafor was caught by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) alongside three other Nigerians based in South Africa namely, Obi John Chukwuenyem, Gilbert Kelvin and Deborah Ifeoma with banned drugs weighing 41.625 kilogrammes comprising 36.675kg of methamphetamine and 4.95 kilogrammes of cocaine with an estimated street value of over N374,625million.

They were all arrested at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA) departing and arriving Nigeria. Obi John Chukwuenyem who is 48years old was arrested with 21.695 kilogrammes of methamphetamine found inside his bag; Gilbert Kelvin, 37 years old with 9.980 kilogrammes of methamphetamine concealed inside solar security lamps; Deborah Ifeoma who is a mother of seven and a 40 year old with five kilogrammes of methamphetamine packed inside foodstuff while Okafor Michael, the music producer was with 4.95 kilogrammes of cocaine hidden inside silicon sealants.

When interrogated, some of the suspects said they were not aware the drugs were concealed in their goods. Obi John who lives in South Africa, said he ventured into the business so he could pay his children’s school fees

“I struggle to feed my family by selling foodstuff. Now, the business is near-moribund. A friend met me on my birthday and introduced me into drug trafficking. He promised to pay me 15,000 South Africa rand. My children are out of school because of my inability to pay tuition fee. This is the first time I would deal in drugs and I regret everything. I pray to be out of this problem” he said.

The presidency has reacted to Wole Soyinka’s comparison of the Goodluck Jonathan administration and the Biblical King Nebuchadnezzar’s reign.

The Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe, responded to Soyinka stating that his alliance with the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC), has clouded his judgement:

“It is quite saddening to note that Prof Wole had become so close to the opposition party so much that he has stopped giving appreciable and unbiased contribution to national topics. Our eminent professor also sadly plays the ostrich as he failed to reprimand Governor Amaechi, who is the ‘national champion of impunity and official recklessness’. The administration of President Goodluck Jonathan prides itself as the most liberal, keeping faith with adherence to rule of law and tolerance,” he stated.

Professor Wole Soyinka had, in a public statement, laid it on the Jonathan administration accusing it of high-handedness in the handling of several state issues including the defection of the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Hon. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, to the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC).
