A former captain of the defunct Stationery Stores of Lagos, Yomi Peters, 71, who has been hospitalised at the Lagos State University Hospital, Ikeja, is dead.

The late Peter’s ordeal was brought to public attention by a story on him in The PUNCH, when his inability to defray his medical bills, stalled his treatment in LASUTH.

Lagos State Football Association confirmed his death on Wednesday.

They may be known as the weaker sex but in the battle to flush out Boko Haram from Nigerian territory, they stand equal with their male counterparts. Fearless, pretty and bold, the female hunters of Adamawa State fear neither man nor woman. To them, the common enemy is not their gender but Boko Haram.

Ladi is a dark-skinned young lady in her 20s. Looking at her, you would hardly believe that she possesses the boldness to confront members of the terrorist sect. In fact, you would pass her off as a young man due to her masculine features but she is in all respects a lady. She smiles as the reporter gapes at her, wondering whether he is seeing double. But she told Sunday New Telegraph that she was motivated by the desire to join in the effort to save her nation from the rampaging terrorists.

She is not alone, our correspondent gathered, as there are a number of female hunters engaged in the Civilian Joint Task Force. They are all part of a civilian vigilante coalition known as Ibn Fadlallah’s forces. Barely literate and armed with dane guns as well as bows and arrows, they risk lives helping the armed forces to hunt members of the sect in the jungles of the North-East states of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe.

Asked why she mustered the courage to join the effort, Ladi replied: “Boko Haram’s days are numbered. We are not afraid and we are ever ready to fight them. “Me, fear death? Never. This is because I believe that we shall all taste it someday,’’ said Ladi, with boldness etched on her face. Ladi, like other male volunteers was optimistic that, with support and motivation they would succeed. “I can assure you that, with support, encouragement and assistance we can play our own role in fighting the monster called Boko Haram.

“We need support from government and individuals to cater for our families,” she added, brandishing her dane gun. Though she is married, she declined to disclose personal details for security reasons. Ladi and her colleagues say they dare to confront the insurgents with the inferior weapons in their hands, vowing that, “If you are committed and have faith in God, you will succeed. We know they (Boko Haram) are using sophisticated weapons, but that will not deter us from facing them squarely. “They thought we would be afraid; never! One can kill a snake with his or her little stick; commitment, resilience and above all faith are the key factors,” she concluded.

Ladi is part of the large army of hunters and CJTF which battled Boko Haram after it tried to install Amirs (leaders) in Maiha, a town in Adamawa State. They foiled the move and killed several members of the sect. The civilian force also helped the armed forces to liberate some of the captured towns.

A state government official involved in the recruitment of the hunters and CJTF told our correspondent that it was in order to stem the tide that the idea of drafting the local hunters allegedly versed in the use of voodoo powers came up. “We are in doubt about the sincerity of Nigerian soldiers in the whole operation, and we sense complicity as what is happening. It could not have been possible without any form of collusion, so we began to think of other options,” said a community leader in Mubi, AbdurRahman Kwacham. Afterwards, the civilian force was mobilised to tackle the insurgents. Ibn Fadlalallah’s army of local hunters, vigilantes and CJTF members were said to have been mobilised by creating alliances with towns to fortify and defend themselves against Boko Haram. “These brave warriors have promised to liberate the North-East from Boko Haram.

They are preparing and engaging in combat in Adamawa and Borno. All brave citizens have been invited to join the legions,” said a community leader who didn’t want to be named. In the first operation, the local hunters and vigilante group were reported to have overwhelmed the insurgents. They confronted the militants in their hundreds, killing dozens of the extremists and recapturing the town.

Residents said the local hunters were stationed in some areas for four days, mapping out strategies on how to recapture Mubi before they finally took on the insurgents. However, the recapture of the towns by the civilian force elicited jubilation, with residents chanting songs of victory to God.

A LIB reader said he was on his way to work around 8 this morning when he noticed a crowd gathered around the Aboju area of Festac. When he went to check what was going on, he saw a group of men had captured and killed a huge snake...and were actually looking at selling it...:-)

The picture apparently shows a huge (dead) snake,probably an African Python being displayed by a group of men believed to have killed it.

In any case, Snake meat is considered a delicacy in some parts of Nigeria and it's very likely that the reptile pictured here has already made it into someones pot of soup. grin

NIGERIA’S SUICIDAL NORTH AND INFIDEL SOUTH.

Ever since the return of democracy to Nigeria in May 1999, Northern Nigeria has become a somewhat suicidal lot. When certain Northern power brokers anointed Chief Olusegun Obasanjo as President in 1999, they envisaged a docile administration where a submissive Southern Christian President protected and preserved the interests of the North. The North here does not include the middle-belt; neither did it include the enlightened Talakawas. No, this so-called North was made up of few individuals, largely Hausa/Fulani Muslims who believed that Nigeria's leadership was their divine right passed on by the legendary Othman Dan Fodio. Thus, as soon as Chief Obasanjo declared his independence from this ‘old North’ by sacking all military officers that had once held political office, the old North knew that they were in trouble.

This old North had for decades considered the Nigerian military as a Northern constituency. They sat back for thirty eight years, watched and relished a status-quo where military rulers from their region rotated power amongst each other with reckless abandon, in the name of 'bloodless' coup. Back then, coups only became 'bloody' when the perpetrators/culprits where non-Muslim Northerners i.e. Christian middle-beltans. Certain individuals from this old North enjoyed plum ministerial appointments, contracts and oil blocks for decades, leaving only residual, harmless or intellectually tasking positions (like minister of information) to ‘southern infidels’. So, when they saw their military politicians being retired from the army by Obasanjo, they knew there was trouble.

By early 2000s, Northern Nigeria fought back by committing its first suicidal act; its group of dethroned power brokers launched the imposition of Sharia in many Northern states. These set of northerners refused to A. recognize Nigeria's secularity and B. remember that apart from maybe Kano and two or three others, every other Northern state in Nigeria has strong indigenous Christian populations. Northern states like Plateau, Nassarawa, Benue, Taraba and Adamawa have near or total Christian majority. In fault-line states like Kaduna, Niger, Bauchi and Gombe, it looks more like a fifty fifty distribution. Recent activities by Boko Haram in Chibok and Gworza areas of Borno state made most Nigerians realize that even in a core Northern state like Borno, its southern fringes are dominated by indigenous Christians. Yet they pressed on with the introduction of Sharia in the entire North; a former military ruler openly supported this move, same leader is now still struggling to win Christian votes in several failed presidential election attempts.

This 'Sharia' move single-handedly sowed suicidal seeds in Northern Nigeria’s social, political and economic structures. These evil seeds were further nurtured in later years to become the cancer we now know as Boko Haram. The introduction of Sharia was meant to unsettle Obasanjo’s administration, but Baba being the strategist that he is looked the other way and allowed those that started the fire to worry about it. Unfortunately, this fire was never quenched, it only mellowed underground for a while waiting to evolve into a volcano eruption-the one we are currently experiencing in form of Islamic insurgency.

During late President Yaradua's final moments, this same Northern cabal made a mockery out of our political institutions, going as far as forging the ailing Presidents’ signature on many occasions. The thought of another ‘Southern infidel’ emerging as President in less than four years was a major nightmare to them. Sadly for this North, their worst nightmare came to pass-Yaradua died, with the help of civil society and a doctrine of necessity another ‘Southern infidel’ emerged as president. Simultaneously, or perhaps in response to this new political order, Boko Haram,a rag-tag organisation known for fighting with machetes, knifes, bows and arrows suddenly began to acquire sophisticated arms, tanks and Hilux jeeps.

Five years and counting, President Goodluck Jonathan has been in the mantle of leadership, even if one does not like this President, the level of negative opposition and venomous attacks he has witnessed and endured will force many objective minds to stand in his defence. It's like witnessing a mob action where former confirmed criminals are the ones unleashing jungle justice on a lesser criminal.

Today, whether we agree or not, President Goodluck Jonathan's most vociferous critics are core Northerners most of whom had tasted power and benefited immensely from past government patronage. This is a fact and unfortunately, this fact alone makes most of their tangible criticisms against the president to appear intangible. Take for example accusations that Jonathan is using Boko Haram to destabilize the North; they could be right, but who started the fire? They've also alleged that former Chief of army staff General Ihejirika is a major sponsor of Boko Haram (thanks to revelations by a hungry white man), again they could be right. However, if the entire social structure and moral values of core Northern Nigeria has depreciated to a level where two Southern Christians can now supply them arms and suicide vests to be used to destroy each other- who then is to be blame?

Who, where are the real Northern leaders? Who is truly responsible for the so-called ‘abject poverty’ that has led many Northern youths into joining Boko Haram, wielding tanks, arms and ammunitions worth millions of Naira? How did a group of Northern illiterates kidnap over two hundred girls in Chibok and for months they've held on to these girls-who’s feeding these girls?

We can keep blaming the federal government and urging them to take more decisive action against the insurgents, but accusing same government of complicity is just plain ridiculous. Whenever Boko Haram strikes, bombs, kidnaps etc, the shame and pressure falls on President Goodluck Jonathan's government. The shame of the missing Chibok girls is still on the Nigerian governments’ head; how then can an incumbent government use its own resources to sponsor activities that bring embarrassment and disrepute to its own administration?

The old North needs to wake up and join the new North in partnership with the rest of the country to fight our common enemy. Yes, there is a New North, many are in the PDP, a few are in the APC and most are not even involved in politics yet. These New Northerners see themselves as Nigerians; they regard their compatriots in the middle-belt and the south as equals. This new North has embraced Agriculture, Tourism and manufacturing as viable ventures that can transform the North and Nigeria in general. Whenever individuals from this new North decide to present themselves for higher national service be rest assured that ALL Nigerians regardless of tribe and religion will rally behind them.

A sad reality is that the set of Northerners currently vying for Nigeria’s top political position against 2015 largely belong to the old suicidal North and therefore can never be fully accepted by ‘the rest of us infidels’. These unpalatable set of old Northerners in normal circumstances should have embarked on self-imposed penance where they concentrate on putting out the fire in their region while grooming fresh Northern young leaders that can engage with their Southern counterparts as equals, working together to build a greater Nigeria.

Nigeria is a very conservative and deeply religious society.

The search for an ideal husband has rightfully or wrongfully led many Nigerian single women into the house of God. Ask any Nigerian single lady about what qualities she wants in her future man and you’ll definitely hear the phrase, “I want a God-fearing man.” Nigerian women love men of God, especially those that have some form of ‘secular swagger’ about them. Secular swagger here means, though this guy remains a born-again Christian, he still possesses some ‘worldly’ qualities that ought not to interfere with his spiritual life. These qualities may include wealth, good looks, confidence, finesse, charisma etc.

An ironic twist to this search for a God-fearing man is that in as much as many Nigerian single ladies want a good Christian man, they definitely will not fancy a virgin man i.e. sexually inexperienced. Most Nigerian women prefer hooking up with men that already have some form of sexual experience and not men that will have to be guided through the tunnel on wedding night.
How then can a God fearing man meet the expectation(s) of coming into a relationship with some form of sexual experience in his CV, but yet maintain the persona of an ideal Christian? This has led to the emergence of former ‘bad boys’ that have finally accepted Christ-ladies love those.
Quite a number of women may have good stories to tell about their born-again boyfriend, fiancés or husbands, but there are many more Nigerian women that have had the misfortune of discovering one very unpalatable fact-a born again man is still a MAN.
One thing I’ve learnt as a student of Political science is that most people make life decisions that are based purely on personal interests-same goes for a lot of men that choose to become born again Christians. As a single lady, if you find yourself involved with or being wooed by a Christian brother, there are many questions you’ve got to ask.
Why is he a born again Christian?

Believe it or not, there are a lot of miserable women married to pastors or deeply religious men; their God fearing husbands may not necessarily be bad people, they are just being their true selves. Most Nigerian single ladies are too reluctant in probing the lifestyle and disposition of their born-again boyfriends during courtship. It’s only after marriage that they begin to observe and discover certain peculiar traits that are anything but holy.

If you are dating a ‘born-again’ man, try as much as possible to see all sides to him, behaviour and character inclusive. Ask questions and don’t just rely on prayers.
Here’s another truth, several men choose the born-again path in order to suppress certain internal worldly vices that they either want to hide or fight. Others become deeply enthralled with religious activities all in a bid to achieve an ‘Alpha male’ status within that defined Christian community, a fit they clearly cannot achieve in the larger secular world.
During my university days, we called such men ‘Boy Chineke’. Chineke means God in Nigeria’s Igbo language.

THE RISE AND FALL OF ‘BOY CHINEKES’
As an undergraduate of the University of Lagos in the late 1990s and early 2000s, I noticed that most guys spent a large chunk of their academic years trying to fit in. There were the true born-again and ‘Efiko’ students that clearly had no interest in worldly pursuits other than their studies. Efiko is a Nigerian slang for Nerd or Geek.
We had the playboys willing to forgo their studies just to sleep with anything wearing skirts. Some of us were kind of stuck in the middle; let’s say playboys with a bit of conscience coupled with the fear of God and fear of our parents knocking us out if we failed to graduate. And then there were the ‘Boy Chinekes’.

During this period in UNILAG, there was this reign of what I’d call funky, well funded Christian student fellowships. Most of the pretty girls we tried to get our hands on always had some form of affiliation with at least one of these fellowship groups.
The ‘Boy Chinekes’ in this era were the student pastors and their holy male crew; these guys were like rock stars and exercised immense control over some of the girls we were dying for. A lot of times, these gorgeous girls were used as workers and ushers in the student fellowship. There were times my hormones got the better part of me and as a student of Political science learning earlier on to always do whatever it takes in order to achieve my interests, I gladly put my Catholic faith on hold and jumped into a few of these fellowships, just to improve my spiritual life...and get laid.[/size]

Do Nigerian girls really appreciate flowers as gifts?
At least from what Hollywood tells us, white (oyinbo) women love flowers, it makes them feel special and loved. Red roses are their favourites alongside several other plant species that we Africans use in our soups. Now let's bring this trend closer home, do black (Nigerian) women love and cherish flowers too?

I'm not referring to the plastic flowers Nigerian brides cling to on their wedding day- I'm talking about flowers from real plants ***vegetable***

On Valentine’s day in many Nigerian cities, we do see a semblance of flowery gifts exchanging hands here and there but here's an observation-you dare not give a Nigerian woman flowers without an accompanying gift with more value.
This is the only time a Nigerian woman 'may' appreciate flowers; but try send her flowers 'pere' and you are totally on your own.

Ironically, even in Hollywood narratives Black women are hardly ever portrayed as the romantic flower loving type; they are sort of portrayed same materialistic way an urban African woman would be represented.

So, which is it, do Nigerian/African/Black women appreciate flowers or not?

publisher: Boko Haram has always been a Nigerian problem; for many years, the Nigerian government had complained that Boko Haram uses Camerounian territory to launch attacks on Nigeria. A top Nigerian diplomat even described Cameroun as the weak link in our cross-border terror war.

All of a sudden, Cameroun 'woke up' and began what looked like a stepping up of attacks against Boko Haram. Unfortunately, all Cameroun did was wage a propaganda war against Boko Haram aimed SOLELY at embarassing Nigeria.

Every other week,we are innundated with ficticious news that Cameroun had just killed multitudes of Boko Haram members. Never for once has Cameroun showed pictures of the hundreds of insurgents they claimed to have killed. All Cameroun did was rely on 'self-hating Nigerians' to rebroadcast such fake news and castigate their own Nigerian army.

Unknown to most Nigerians, Cameroun has a very weak army with combined personnel of less than 15 thousand. Cameroun relies on France for everything. In Camerounian towns like Yaounde and Douala, bottled water, beef and bread consumed by their middle class is imported from France.

Boko Haram many times humiliated Cameroun by openly kidnaping government officials (or their wives), Chinese workers and tourists. When this happens, Cameroun's government pays a ransome to free these captives, only to issue statements that they've killed insurgents and rescued victims-with no evidence.

Cameroun, weeks back went as far as reporting that some 480 Nigerian soldiers (tactically retreating from battle) had fled and defected into Cameroun. As expected,some 'self-hating' Nigerians ran with the news. Where are those 480 Nigerian soldiers today? Have they applied for assylum in Cameroun? No, these brave soldiers rejoined their team in Nigeria and they are now, part and parcel of the patriotic crew currently dealing with Boko Haram.

Just recently some Camerounian official took to the social media to claim they had just killed Shekau in a cross-border raid. Hours ago, they posted pictures of the alleged dead Shekau, PICTURES that had already circulated in Nigeria since Friday night.

The Camerounian official(s) were so dumb not to realize that 1. Konduga is no where near the Camerounian border 2.The Nigeria military had since paraded some of Shekau's favourite weapons including an APC plus pictures of other dead insurgents. 3. Why are some Boko Haram fighters surrendering to the Nigerian army and not the Camerounian army?

While we commend our armed forces thus far, we urge them not to relent as the name 'Abubakar Shekau' is more of a myth than an individual. Another Shekau can resurface tomorrow; the real battle is against the doctrine of Boko Haram and all those that have subscribed to it.

HOW BOKO HARAM CONQUERED NIGERIA.

Boko Haram carries out a terror attack, it has just occured, details are still very sketchy...BUT the ‘great Nigerian journalists’ swing into action immediately.

Sahara Reporters: “BOKO HARAM STRIKES AGAIN, HUNDREDS BUTCHERED.”

Vanguard Newspapers: “Scores feared killed in another Boko Haram attack.”

Punch Newspapers: “Nigerian soldiers flee as Boko Haram raids town.”

The Nation: “Anarchy in the land as Boko Haram kills 200.”

These are the scary headlines that most Nigerian journalists will feed to their already troubled fellow citizens’ minutes after the occurrence, without carrying out any investigations. Can you blame them? They are simply sharing information and telling Nigerians the true situation of things, same message opposition figures have been trying to tell the whole nation.

Next day after the Boko Haram attacks, the Nigerian security agencies (the only organization(s) authorized to give details on such attacks) comes forth and briefs the nation on the latest encounter with terrorists. The security spokesman or woman tells the world that the insurgents actually struck, killing 18 civilians, 2 soldiers and losing over 50 of their evil members.

Unfortunately, it’s too late, Nigerians will not believe; the international media has already culled reports from the Vanguards, Punchs’ and Sahara Reporters insisting that the terrorists killed and maimed hundreds while the Nigerian army ran away with their tails between their legs. Pictures of mutilated corpses, burnt out buildings and other gory visuals are published, all in bid to convince Nigerians of how hopeless their armed forces really are.

Meanwhile, the terrorist leader and his lieutenants retire back to their forest den armed with transistor radios and satellite phones monitoring the impact and spread of their recent terror attack on ‘infidel’ Nigeria. They are satisfied, even as their new recruits are busy burying fallen comrades in nearby bushes.
The terrorists conclude that it is only a matter of time before they subdue their enemies psychologically and march towards Abuja, all thanks to their ‘subconscious’ public relations officers scattered all over the country.

The terrorist leader rejoices at the fact that Nigerians now only believe the jihadists’ own version of events, and not what their elected ‘clueless’ leader tells them. He thinks to himself, "Finally, ‘Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda'awati Wal-Jihad’ has won the propaganda war; our leaders and suicide bombers did not die in vain."
