Equatorial Guinea media sensation Baltasar Ebang Engonga is at risk of being sentenced to 18 years in prison after appearing in a Malabo court in his high-profile corruption trial continues.

He has now spent ten months in detention after his arrest since September 2024.

The former director-general of Equatorial Guinea’s National Financial Investigation Agency (ANIF) is facing embezzlement charges alongside several other former senior officials.

During Monday’s court proceedings, prosecutors detailed what they described as a sophisticated scheme to divert public funds for personal gain.

The news outlet, Le Bled Parle reports that the national prosecutor has called for a notably severe punishment: 8 years in prison for embezzling public funds, 4 years and 5 months for unlawful enrichment, and 6 years and 1 day for abuse of power.

In addition to the prison terms, the charges include a recommended fine of over 910 million CFA francs (approximately 1.5 million USD) and a prohibition from holding any public office throughout the sentence period.

In an ongoing legal battle at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court, under Suit No. FCT/HC/GAR/CV/157/2025, in which Isaac Fayose had filed a claim against Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media to the FCT Minister. The case centers on allegations of defamation, with Olayinka accusing Fayose of substance abuse and erratic behavior, while Fayose seeks to protect his reputation.

Olayinka, in his defense, challenged Fayose to undergo drug testing by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) twice monthly for six months, offering to cover the costs.

The defendant (Lere Olayinka) hereby challenge the claimant (Isaac Fayose) to subject himself to drug test by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for six (6) months and within the 6 months, the Claimant should be tested twice a month. The defendant hereby undertakes to bear the cost of the testing.

As evidence that the claimant (Isaac Fayose) smokes IGBO and other substances, the claimant on the 11th of October, 2024, posted a video declaring himself the National Chairman of PDP. The said publication is hereby pleaded and same shall be relied upon in evidence.

The display of madness by the claimant was published by the Daily Post news of 12/10/24 with the title “drama as Fayose declares self PDP national chairman, suspends Atiku, Wike, others”. The said publication is hereby pleaded and shall be relied upon in evidence.

The New Telegraph newspaper also carried the publication on 12/10/24 with the caption: “PDP crisis, Fayose Declares Self Nat’l Chairman, suspends Top members”. The said publication is hereby pleaded and shall be relied upon in evidence.

To further prove that the claimant (Isaac Fayose) was under the influence of substance abuse, the claimant on the 29th of August , 2022, made a publication on his Facebook and other social media handles, claiming that he escaped being kidnapped. The said publication is hereby pleaded and same shall be relied upon in evidence.

Contrary to the kidnapped attempt claim by the claimant (Isaac Fayose), the Claimant later confessed to the police that he lied about the kidnapped attempt. The confession story published by an online newspaper, Nigeria, is hereby pleaded and same shall be relied upon in evidence.

On the 31st of August, 2022, the Nigerian police also came out to say that the claimant faked the kidnap attempt. The publication contained in an online newspaper “independent.ng, is hereby pleaded and same shall be relied upon in evidence.

All the above acts of the Claimant (Isaac Fayose) are pointers to the fact that the Claimant is under the influence of drugs.

Contrary to paragraphs 9 and 10 of the statement of claim, the defendant (Lere Olayinka) avers that as the Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media to the Honourable Minister of FCT, he is the image maker of the Minister and it is his duty to respond to any publication intended to dent the image of the honourable minister.

In further response to paragraph 10 of the statement of claim, and contrary to paragraph 11 and 12 of the statement of claim, the defendant (Lere Olayinka) avers that the claimant (Isaac Fayose) who faked his own kidnap attempt and later confessed to it being a lie, the claimant who on his own declared himself the national chairman of PDP and purport to suspend top members of the party, has no image to protect.

The state Governor Engineer Abba Kabir Yusuf stated this while briefing news men on some of the achievements recorded by his administration in the last twenty days at the government house.

Engineer Abba Kabir Yusuf urged the benefiting students to work hard for better results and to reciprocate the gesture so as to justify the huge investment made by the state government in order not to halt their educational pursuit.

According to the Governor, " as a concerned Government, we must ensure that the progression of your educational pursuit is not stopped and I promptly approved the payment of the examination fees to 55,000 students across the state.
