OK ooo. So why are they not taking the allegation against Ameachi serious? |
Nollywood actor, John Okafor has said that he gives President Muhammadu Buhari 100 per cent of his support on his actions against the Nigerian judiciary in respect to the allegations of judicial misconduct and corruption leveled against some judges. Recall that the Department of State Services, DSS, has in the past weeks conducted a ‘sting operation’ on Nigerian top judges whom they arrested, alleging judicial misconduct and corruption. The judges, whose homes were raided and arrested by operatives of the DSS during separate operations carried out on October 7 and 8, include two Justices of the Supreme Court, Sylvester Ngwuta and Iyang Okoro. Other judges are Adeniyi Ademola of the Federal High Court Abuja, Kabir Auta of the Kano High Court, Muazu Pindiga of Gombe High Court, Mohammed Tsamiya of the Court of Appeal, Ilorin, and the Chief Judge of Enugu State, I. A. Umezulike. Mr. Okafor who took to the social media to state his opinion rather based his support on the point that the indicted judges and the judiciary decided to keep mum instead of acting as the last hope of the common man when some Nigerians were allegedly wrongly accused, detained unlawfully and or refused bail even when they were either not found guilty or not being tried at all. Below is his words: “I will support Buhari for his action against Nigeria Judiciary ,when issue of Buhari’s certificate came up, No judge was serious to prosecute Buhari, when IPOB members where killed, No judge talked about it, when Nnamdi KANU was guiltless, No judge talk about it, When Dasuki was granted Bail even in ECOWAS Court.” “No Judge talked about it,When Shitte Muslim where killed in Kaduna No judge talked about it, what about the killings in Nimbo and Agatu? No judge talked about it, Margaret was killed in kano while preaching No judge talked about it, all the arrested boko haram members where released by Buhari, No judge talked about it, 2015 general election nko? No judge talked about it.” “As Nigerian Judiciary failed to jail Buhari let Buhari jail them……i give him my 100% Support on this one,” he concluded.

Frank, recently restated his call that APC National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun should resign following his handling of the crisis that hallmarked the Ondo State governorship primaries and his submission of the name of Mr Rotimi Akeredolu, SAN as the party’s flagbearer to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC. APC National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu had also tackled Odigie-Oyegun over the matter. Berating Timi Frank, in a statement by the chairman of South-South APC Leaders Forum, Chief John Harry, the leaders described Timi Frank as a disgrace to the APC, saying ‘’he lacks the ability to manage the party’s relationship with the general public. “His incompetence is setting our party back. Timi Frank should learn to respect leadership. A responsible leader should not take side on matters affecting his party. Frank’s utterances and attitude are geared towards causing disunity in the party.” The leaders defended Odigie-Oyegun, for his roles in the managing the party and described him as “a strong and competent leader. Chief John Odigie-Oyegun knows his substance. He is working closely with President Muhammadu Buhari in the fight against corruption in the country.” |
THE Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, in collaboration with Nigeria Education Research and Development Council, NERDC has concluded plans to introduce financial education into basic and senior secondary education curricula in Nigeria. This was disclosed during a press briefing on the sideline of a workshop by CBN and NERDC on the infusion of financial education into the basic and senior secondary education curricula, in Lagos. Executive Secretary, NERDC, Professor Ismail Junaidu told the newsmen that “the curriculum, which is very innovative, comprises different themes namely: Money, savings, credit, insurance, deposit insurance, capital market, pension, planning and budgeting, financial landscape and entrepreneurship. “Each theme contains different concepts, contents, activities, learning resources and evaluation guides that are sequenced and graduated for effective implementation and learning outcomes in the different lessons, classrooms and schools (for all the levels targeted.)” According to Junaidu, the project was motivated by the need to address “consumers’ lack of knowledge and skills that would enable them understand financial concepts and manage their personal financial matters to enhance their economic wellbeing.” Also speaking, Head of the Consumer Protection Department of the CBN, Mrs. Umma Dutse said the financial education initiative is being executed through a multi stakeholder approach as the project is taking place under the auspices of the financial systems regulators such as the CBN, Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation, Securities and Exchange Commission, National Pension Commission, National Insurance Commission, etc. She said: “Financial education is not what one individual or organisation can do. The framework has taken a multi-stakeholder approach, so all hands must be on deck for us to achieve all our goals and objectives. I am happy to say that with all the commitments we have seen from all stakeholders, the NGOs, and development partners, I am very sure that at the end of the day, Nigeria is going to be a reference point once this curriculum is developed.” She added: “This project is funded by the participating stakeholders and there is fund set aside for this project until its logical conclusion.” On her part, a Director at NERDC, Prof. Kate Nwofo, said: “This project is going to be very beneficial. You know before now we have curriculum in Business, Accounting, Commerce etc, but we needed to improve on what we already have so that the students will have better access to information. For instance, inside the Business Studies, we have found some deficiencies. As an entrepreneur, you need to know how to get access to credit and loans because your savings alone cannot meet all your needs, so we have developed that and we are infusing those aspects into the curriculum to make sure that an entrepreneur has enough information to be able to prepare a budget, create a business plan, source for funding and be able to manage a business without much challenges.” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/10/cbn-nerdc-introduce-financial-education-schools-curriculum/ |

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, (SERAP) has sent an open letter to ustice Mahmud Mohammed, Chief Justice of Nigeria in his capacity as the Chairman of the National Judicial Council (NJC) seeking explanations on what “he and the NJC knew or had reason to know regarding the report to them on 1st February, 2016 by Justice John Inyang Okoro, Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria on the alleged visit by Mr Rotimi Amaechi, Minister of Transportation to the official residence of Justice Okoro to allegedly discuss election Appeals in respect of Rivers State, Akwa Ibom State and Abia State.” The letter dated 21 October 2016 and signed by SERAP executive director Adetokunbo Mumuni states that, “We consider these allegations as constituting a serious threat to the independence, impartiality and accountability of the judiciary, and should in the ordinary course of duties, have prompted action from your Lordship and the NJC to wit: undertaking prompt, thorough and transparent investigations, and where there is prima-facie evidence of political interference in the judicial system, to report the matter to the appropriate anticorruption commissions and agencies for further investigation and possible prosecution.” The letter reads in part: “SERAP strongly believes that the NJC has a responsibility to support judges in dealing with alleged corrupt inducements that are offered or the threats they receive, such as the allegations in this case.” “In this respect, SERAP wishes to pose the following questions to your Lordship and the NJC: (1) is it correct to suggest that Justice Okoro reported to you and the NJC on 1st February, 2016 his alleged meeting at his official residence with Mr Rotimi Amaechi? Was Justice Okoro’s report documented by your Lordship and the NJC? If so, Nigerians would like to hear from your Lordship and the NJC whether Justice Okoro’s report was ever discussed, and what action, if any, was taken by your Lordship and the NJC to respond to the allegations raised in his report?” (2) is it fair to suggest that your Lordship and the NJC knew, or had reason to know, that the alleged visit by Mr Amaechi to Justice Okoro’s official residence would constitute a case of political interference in the judicial system and a corruption offence under Nigerian laws and the UN Convention against Corruption to which Nigeria is a state party? (3) after the alleged visit was brought to the attention of your Lordship and the NJC, did your Lordship and the NJC take any step to promptly and thoroughly investigate the matter further? (4) would your Lordship and the NJC agree that the alleged visit to Justice Okoro’s official residence to discuss election Appeals has seriously undermined the public trust and confidence in the judiciary, and the image of the judiciary as the last hope of the common man? (5) is it correct to suggest that it is part of the inherent and implicit constitutional duties of the NJC to ensure that the judiciary as a whole does not lay itself open to the risk of political interference, manipulation and coercion to act in a certain way? Is it also correct to suggest that such duties require the NJC to promptly and thoroughly investigate allegations of political interference in the judicial system, that is, when those in political power allegedly use their influence to force or induce judges to act and rule according to their interests and not in accordance with the application of the law? (6) would your Lordship and the NJC accept that the alleged visit by Mr Amaechi to the official residence of Justice Okoro to allegedly discuss election Appeals was motivated, facilitated and encouraged by the apparent failure by the NJC to ensure, as part of its inherent and implicit constitutional duties: (1) that system was in place to ensure prompt and thorough investigation of allegations of political interference in the judicial system and where there is prima facie evidence, to refer such allegations to appropriate anticorruption commissions and agencies for further investigation and possible prosecution, in strict accordance with the standards of national laws and international law including the UN Convention against Corruption; (2) that any such system was operating in a continuous and effective manner? (7) would your Lordship and the NJC proceed to establish a system to ensure prompt and thorough investigation of allegations of political interference in the judicial system, and then ensure that through such system the alleged visit of Mr Amaechi to Justice Okoro’s official residence is promptly and thoroughly investigated by the NJC, and where there is prima facie evidence of political interference, that the matter is promptly referred to appropriate anticorruption commissions and agencies for further investigation and possible prosecution?” “Nigerians are eagerly awaiting clarifications from your Lordship and the NJC on the issues raised above.” “According to reports, Justice Okoro in his recent letter to your Lordship stated that he reported to you the alleged visit by Mr Amaechi to his official residence to allegedly discuss how to win election Appeals in respect of Rivers State, Akwa Ibom State and Abia State. Justice Okoro also said that he told your Lordship about the visit of Mr. Umana Umana to his residence to allegedly make the same request of assistance to win the appeal at the Supreme Court.” |
