President Bola Tinubu has directed the Minister of Health, Ali Pate, to de-emphasise speaking about the health sector’s challenges and rather engage with development partners to birth new reforms that would improve the health and well-being of Nigerians. Tinubu bared his mind when he had an audience with the minister at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Wednesday, specifically directing Pate to pursue a very ambitious sector-wide programme that would improve population health outcomes, using the basic healthcare provision fund as a basis for reviving the primary health care system. Tinubu also told Pate to explore ways of enhancing seamless working relationships between state governments, community leaders, and traditional leaders to ensure that Nigerians get better quality services to deal with the issues that bother them, whether it’s malaria, immunisation, maternal and child health, or reproductive health, among others. Pate, who met with the President in the company of Prof Seniat Fisseha, a development partner under the auspices of the Susan-Buff Foundation, assured that going forward, plans are underway to design a social action fund to reach communities. He said they would work to get the trust of the community dwellers, through which they would be empowered and supported to solve issues that are very simple but afflicting many of the people at the grassroots level. “While having an audience with the President, we discussed some important issues regarding Nigerians’ health and social well-being. As we all know, the President is very committed and has directed that we do all we can to improve the health and well-being of all Nigerians as part of his renewed hope agenda. ”Accordingly, in recent days, he has approved three important steps for us to move forward and has asked us to talk less and do more. And in that spirit, he, in fact, has asked us to pursue a very ambitious sector-wide programme to improve population health outcomes, using the basic healthcare provision fund as a basis for reviving our primary healthcare system, working with state governments and community leaders, traditional leaders to ensure that Nigerians get better quality services to deal with the issues that bother them, whether it’s malaria, whether it’s immunisation, maternal and child health, reproductive health—those are elements that have a direct bearing on the health and well-being of Nigerians, with the state governments and with our development partners. “So that sector-wide programme is underway, and our visitor today is committed to working with us to work with countries systems, not set up parallel systems. Mr President has also approved a presidential initiative to unlock the healthcare value chain that will help drive the medical industrialisation agenda with clear targets. “It will require the public and private sectors to work hand in hand. An elder statesman and former Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Malam Adamu Fika is dead. The death of the nonagenarian was announced by the Secretary Fika Emirate Council Potiskum, Yobe State, Ali Gimba Fika in a statement. According to the statement, “Mallam Adamu Fika, the Waziri of Fika was a renowned and seasoned educationist and administrator, a native of Fika, Yobe State, born in 1933 in Fika, Yobe State.” “Fika is the first and only Nigeria’s Head of Service to resign because he was not comfortable being at the helm of affairs when by his training, he perceived the civil service was being destroyed”, the statement added. The deceased during his life held several prominent positions, including: Head of Civil Service of the Federation in 1986, as well as permanent secretary at various federal ministries, that include Internal Affairs, Commerce, Communications, among others. .ng gathered that Fika died last night mid flight while returning from London to Kaduna. He was in a London hospital to treat an undisclosed ailment. A former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega has reacted to reports of him saying the 2023 elections were compromised. Reports had it that Jega made the remark at a two-day retreat organised by the Senate in Ikot Ipene, Akwa Ibom State. Jega was quoted as saying: “We have seen, in 2023 elections, the damaging effect of how people in the corridors of power get their client/partisan nominees appointed, without being thoroughly screened, and then they are influenced to compromise the integrity of elections.” Reacting, Jega said the report was not a true reflection of his position. In a statement signed by Debo Ologunagba, the National Publicity Secretary of the party, the main opposition party said it believes that the issues of the February 2023 Presidential election—the alleged violation of rules and laws, the brazen manipulations and falsifications in perversion of the country’s electoral process—have put democracy in a precarious situation. According to the party, Nigerians and indeed the whole world look forward to the Supreme Court for justice in the hope that the Court will apply the laws, including the express provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), the Electoral Act, 2022 and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Guidelines and Regulations in delivering substantial justice in the matter. The Oyo State Police Command has arrested three people over the killing of a man whose name has not been revealed. The trio were caught for possessing body parts of the deceased in Ibadan, the state capital, on Thursday. Sources told newsmen that the suspects are Taofeeq Kabelohun and Rahmon Muibi, also known as Alubarika, with the third person’s name not yet revealed when this report was written. It was gathered that the three suspects conspired to kill the man whom they asked to follow them to visit a place around Moniya area in the Akinyele Local Government Area. They were later arrested by the police after it was discovered that blood was coming out of the booth of their car. A video, which has been in circulation since Friday, showed that the three suspects are currently at the State Criminal Investigation Department in Iyaganku Ibadan. In the video obtained by .ng, the trio displayed the head and other parts of the man they killed. Sources who asked not to be named revealed that Kabelohun was the Mufasir (Deputy Imam) of Orisun Awotan Central Mosque, Awotan in Ido Local Government Area, Ibadan, until his arrest. Another source within the community revealed that Kabelohun and Muibi had been arrested more than twice for the same offence at Peace Estate and Adaba community along the Apete-Akufo road. “These people had been arrested more than twice on this same issue, and they are living in our midst, one at Peace Estate and the other at Adaba,” he said. Another source in the community revealed that the duo were arrested when they were trying to remove body parts from a grave in Ibadan. “The two have been caught while trying to remove dead body from grave in Ibadan”. Another revealed that the man they killed came from Sango Otta in Ogun State. Orisun Awotan Central Mosque removes Kabelohun as Mufasir over murder case Meanwhile, the Orisun Awotan Central Mosque has removed Kabelohun as the Mufasir of the mosque. A source within the mosque made this revelation on Sunday. Our correspondent learnt that the decision was taken during a meeting held in the mosque on Friday and had Chief Imam of the mosque, Alhaji Taiwo Huzain; Chairman, Orisun, Adaba, Akowo and Environs Muslim Community, Barrister Akib Akintola; and other stakeholders of the mosque in attendance. The mosque, in the communique obtained by .ng on Sunday, indicated that Mallam Abdulhakeem Abdulrasheed had been installed as the new Mufasir of the mosque. The communique reads, “That Taofik Kabelohun should be removed as the Mufasir of Orisun Awotan Central Mosque. Henceforth, he is no longer the mosque member. “This is due to his gross misconduct and the recent alleged murder case he is involved in. However, the stakeholders unanimously agreed that Mallam Abdulhakeem Abdulrasheed should be installed as the new Mufasir of the mosque with immediate effect after today’s Jumat service. “That new committee should be inaugurated that will look into the affairs of the mosque. Addressing a press briefing in Lokoja on Saturday, the party chairman said Braimoh stands out among other candidates in the Kogi governorship race with his clear vision for the state and actionable plans to develop Kogi. Ambo said having moved round most wards in Kogi State, he is confident that Braimoh will emerge victorious on November 11. “Aside being the most accessible among the governorship candidates, Braimoh is the brightest among the pack. “Our governorship candidate has engaged people in the nooks and crannies of the state, touring most wards across the 21 local government areas in Kogi state. “He has presented a very clear and detailed vision for the state as encapsulated in his STAT Agenda. His plans to create and distribute wealth remains the most practical approach to the challenges bedeviling Kogi State,” he said. He, however, urged the general public to ignore the former chairman of Action Alliance in the state, Musa Ukwenya, who, according to him, is trying to defraud unsuspecting politicians that he still leads the party in Kogi. He explained that Ukwenya ceased to be state chairman of the party after the Supreme Court judgement that affirmed the current national leadership of the party. Ambo said his coming on board was necessitated by the dismissal of the suit by Kenneth Udeze challenging Adekunle Rufai Omoaje, the National Chairman of Action Alliance. “Musa Ukwenya belonged to the Udeze faction and had since ceased to be chairman of the party in Kogi State. After series of legal battles, the Supreme Court laid the problem to rest by recognising Omoaje as the authentic chairman of the party. The Omoaje-led national leadership is the one recognised by INEC. “We, the executives and members of Action Alliance, want to make it categorically clear that the party is intact and in support of the assignment of Otunba Olayinka Braimoh for the state. “Without mincing words, AA in Kogi remains one house and body determined to win this election. We urge all our members not to be distracted by the activities of the former chairman, Musa Ukwenya, who has been going about to disparage our movement for a better Kogi State,” he said. A former economist and accountant, Olabode Agusto, founder of AGUSTO & CO Limited, Nigeria’s first credit rating company, is dead. Dele Momodu, Publisher of Ovation Magazine, announced Augusto’s death through his official X handle on Thursday. The economic guru was born on September 14, 1955, and died at the age of 68. “One of Nigeria’s biggest economic wizards, Mr Olabode Agusto, has passed on. He founded AGUSTO & CO Ltd., a credit rating company. “His darling wife, Edna and children were in Portugal (his adopted country) when he passed on at close to 70. May his brilliant soul rest in peace,” Momodu wrote. Agusto served as the Director of the National Pension Commission, member of the Central Bank of Nigeria Monetary Policy Committee and Director-General of the Budget Office of the Federation. He also had years of experience in the private sector. The Ogun State Government is set to establish the Ministries of Mineral Resources, Information Communication Technology (ICT) and Digital Economy and Energy. This was disclosed by Governor Dapo Abiodun during a meeting with Permanent Secretaries held at the Executive Chambers of the Governor’s Office, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta. Prince Abiodun also disclosed that the Ministry of Youths would be separated from the Ministry of Sports in preparation for the setting up of the Ogun State Sports Commission. Abiodun noted that the establishment of the new ministries would avail his administration the opportunity to focus more on the development of those critical sectors. He said that it is imperative to have full fledged ministerial status for those sectors for the administration to achieve the objectives set forth in those areas. The governor noted that the prospect of Ogun becoming an oil producing state during his tenure is higher, adding that attention is also being paid to electricity generation following the unbundling of that sector. On the idea behind the Ministry of Information Communication Technology (ICT) and Digital Economy, Prince Abiodun described Ogun as the education capital of Nigeria, with many youths in the state being ICT savvy. The new Ministry, he said, will take care of the needs of the youths in the state on terms of employment. He spoke further: “I had also mentioned in the course of the swearing-in of the commissioners that we are establishing new ministries. “We intend to establish about three or four new ministries; the Ministries of Mineral Resources; Information Communication Technology (ICT) and Digital Economy and we are creating the Ministry of Youths. “We are removing the Ministry of Sports from the Ministry of Youths because we want to set up the Ogun State Sports Commission. We are also considering setting up the Ministry of Energy. “The reasons why we decided to set up this new ministries is because those areas are now going to be areas of focus for us and we believe that for us to achieve the objectives that we are setting forth in those areas, it is important for them to become full fledged ministries and have all the required administrative support that will allow them to achieve their objectives.” Governor Abiodun commended the permanent secretaries and civil servants in the state for their prayers and support, especially after the Tribunal judgement that was in his favour. Abiodun called for synergy between political appointees and civil servants, adding that it is important to work together for the success of the administration. According to him, civil servants and political appointees must not been seen to be competing, but complementing each other, adding that such collaboration can only be in the interest of the state. He added: “It is important for the success of our administration for all of us to work together. The Ogun State government on Tuesday declared its readiness to take over the construction of the LagosOta-Abeokuta road from the Federal Government and transform it into a world-class carriageway. The road which runs through Lagos and Ogun states, has been in a deplorable condition for years, resulting in untold hardship for motorists, especially citizens of Ogun State. The Governor Dapo Abiodun-led administration has been providing palliatives on the road since 2019. Efforts by Prince Abiodun, in conjunction with his Lagos State counterpart, Babajide Sanwo-Olu were rebuffed by the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari. However, the unrelenting efforts of Governor Abiodun finally yielded fruit on Monday when the federal government announced its approval for the Ogun State Government to embark on the reconstruction of the dilapidated road and toll it. Minister of Works, David Umahi, spoke on the new federal government position after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting at the Aso Villa, Abuja on Monday. “On permission to build federal roads, when such requests are made, we give approval within 24 hours but then there are conditions to be met – they must have to use the Federal Ministry of Works standard designs,” Umahi said. Appreciating the gesture of the federal government while commending Governor Abiodun for his resilience in pursuit of the approval, Ogun State Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Ade Akinsanya, declared that the state is ready to take on the project and end the many years of suffering of her people. Akinsanya, who recalled that the struggle to get the approval from the federal government started immediately Governor Abiodun was sworn in in 2019, said the decision to allow Ogun take over the project is the best thing that can happen to the people of the state and other users of the road. Saying the Governor never stopped decrying the decrepit state of the road, the Commissioner said: “Severally, Governor Abiodun and Governor Jide Sanwoolu of Lagos State wrote the presidency and the federal works ministry seeking the handover of among other roads, the Lagos-Sango Ota-Abeokuta road, Ikorodu-Ogijo-Sagamu road and Sagamu-Ijebu Ode-Benin road. “But the response then was that all the roads were under contracts at the time, so nothing happened. But our governor, determined to see and end to the hardship being experienced by our people, did not give up until he was able to seal the deal on Sunday.” Explaining that the length of the road is roughly 70km with Ogun having about 61km and Lagos State, 9km, Akinsanya said even while waiting for the approval, the state administration kept doing all it can to make the road manageable for motorists. “Ogun State has been rehabilitating the road since 2019. We kept doing palliative works because the governor is always concerned about the sufferings being experienced by the people. He remained concerned about the deplorable state of the road till he got what he wanted from the federal government. “With the transfer done now, we are happy and ready to immediately take over the project and turn around the fortunes of the road. It’s what we’ve been looking for, praying for since we came on board. We will take over immediately, subject to paper works between us and the federal ministry,” he stated further. Akinsanya added that the state is going to work with the federal ministry of works to meet the criteria of the federal government. “We are working on how to fund the project. Aside from the road, we will have trailer parks and other infrastructure in place. It will be in partnership with some other stakeholders. It’s a PPP project and work will start as soon as possible “The governor has done very well in securing this approval despite the delay. We will still work with Lagos State on a lot of modalities. This is why we are the Gateway. “The work will be accelerated so that delivery will be swift. We will give the best standard in the shortest time possible. We appreciate the minister for supporting our quest all along. The crisis in the Nation’s red chamber worsened on Tuesday, with the Chief Whip, Senator Ali Ndume angrily staging a walkout. To save the situation from escalating, the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, suddenly called for an emergency closed session. Ndume had raised a point of order, citing order 54 of the Senate Rule Book to draw the attention of the Senate President to his handling of affairs in the chambers which were against the rules. He said: “Mr. President there are some things we do in this chamber that are against the rules. Sir, nobody is too big to learn.” Akpabio had hardly allowed Ndume to end his speech, when he ruled him out of order. Visibly enraged, Ndume then stormed out of the chamber and went straight to his office. The Chief Whip shortly after, received a call from a colleague to return to the chamber for an executive session. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned Aisha Alkali Wakil also known as Mama Boko Haram before Justice Umaru Fadawu of the Borno State High Court, Maiduguri, on two-count charge bordering on conspiracy and cheating to the tune of N150 million. Mama Boko Haram was arraigned alongside Tahiru Saidu Daura and Prince Lawal Shoyode. EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, said in a statement that the defendants, however, pleaded ‘not guilty’ to the charges when they were read to them. Counsels for the prosecution, A.I. Arogha and S.O. Saka told the court for a trial date. The alleged offence is contrary to Section 320(a) of the Borno State Penal Code Law Cap 102, and punishable under Section 322 of the same Law. The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), on Sunday, said three persons died instantly in an auto crash involving a commercial bus and a truck. A statement by the agency’s Permanent Secretary, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu said the incident happened at Gbagada, by Charlie Boy bus stop. “Following a distress call received at 22:01hrs through the agency’s toll-free lines, LASEMA activated the Lagos State Emergency Response Plans with an arrival time of 22:17hrs. “Upon arrival of the agency’s LRT at the scene, it was observed that a white commercial bus lost control and crashed into a moving truck. “The 18-passenger commercial bus, with registration number JJJ-844YA and loaded to capacity, was heading to Ajah from Oshodi. “It lost control while in motion, rammed into a moving truck from behind and three people died instantly. “Two males and one female, all adults, immediately lost their lives to the incident, while others sustained various degrees and categories of injuries,” he said. He added that out of the seven people injured, three were promptly administered pre-hospital care and ferried to Gbagada General Hospital for further treatment by the agency’s paramedics. “The LASEMA Response Team, LASEMA Pre-Hospital Care Team, Nigeria Police and Lagos Fire and Rescue Services were all present at the incident,” he said. Aloy Ejimakor, Special Counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, on Friday identified those behind the continued incarceration of the agitator. Ejimakor claimed that the Presidency is holding the agitator and not the Supreme Court. He disclosed this while stressing that the Federal Government cannot continue to detain Kanu with the release of Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Igboho. Posting on X, Ejimakor alleged that Yoruba leaders facilitated Igboho’s release. A Peoples Democratic Party Chieftain, Senator Walid Jibrin has expressed concerns over the political situation in Nasarawa State and called on Governor Abdullahi Sule to immediately hand over the mantle of leadership to David Ombugadu. The former Chairman of the PDP Board of Trustees while noting that Islam does not approve of robbery, injustice or cheating; said it was shocking that Governor Sule has resorted to religion as a tool against his opponent, notwithstanding the glaring failure at the elections. Speaking on behalf of the PDP at a press conference in Abuja, Senator Jibrin tasked both Muslims and Christians in the state to give their total support to Dr David Ombugadu as the Governor of Nasarawa State. He said, ” I am a devout Muslim and elder of over 70 years, I am shocked by Sule’s attempt to blame his defeat on religion rather than the overwhelming facts before God and all Nigerians, which showed that he didn’t win the last governorship election in Nasarawa State and should therefore honourably vacate the seat for the winner Dr David Ombugadu of the PDP”. Recalling incidents ahead of the 2023 electioneering campaign, Senator Jibrin said it was very clear that Nasarawa people were no longer with the incumbent Governor, Abdullahi Sule of the APC. Ahead of the November 11 gubernatorial election in Bayelsa State, some stakeholders in the State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, have mocked the party’s governorship standard-bearer, Chief Timipre Sylva, for naming himself the Director General of the Campaign Council. Reacting to the constitution and inauguration of the campaign council, the stakeholders and chieftains of the party under the auspices of Bayelsa APC Integrity Group, said the development has vindicated the group which had accused the party Sylva of running a one-man show in the party. The reaction by the group is contained in a statement signed and sent to newsmen, on Thursday by its coordinator, Chief Ebipadeowei Oyinkuro. The group recalled that only a few years ago, APC was not only in the heart and mouth of the people of Bayelsa State but was also at the commanding height of goodwill in the State, regretting that weeks to the forthcoming election, all that had evaporated. The statement read: “The party not only appears to be going into battle with its flanks wide open, but it is deep in tatters and also showing signs that it requires oxygen. “Well-regarded and influential members of the party in the state who could rightly be described as the first and best 11 have all turned their backs against Chief Sylva. “Many other party stalwarts who never set out from the onset to be dissidents are also openly pitching their tent with the candidate of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Sen. The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested an 18-year-old housewife suspected of beating her stepdaughter to death. The command’s spokesman, SP Ahmad Wakil, said on Tuesday in Bauchi that the suspect allegedly savaged the five-year-old girl, Hafsat Garba, for smearing her clothes with faeces. According to him: “On September 28, 2023, at about 9:25 pm, one Abdulaziz Adamu of Kandahar Area, Bauchi, reported at A Divisional Police Headquarters that the suspect had beaten her stepdaughter. “As a result, she sustained serious injuries to her body and on receiving the report, a team of detectives led by the DPO swung into action. “The team rushed to the scene and moved the victim to Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, Bauchi for medical attention, where she was certified dead by a medical doctor.” Similarly, Wakil said that the command had arrested two members of a quasi-security outfit suspected of using force during the interrogation of three alleged crime suspects, one of whom died as a result. According to him, the three suspects, Joshua Yohana, Bitrus Iliya, and Yohana Abubakar, were interrogated over the alleged disappearance of the manhood of one Usman Sale of Sabon Garin Nabardo village. Yonana Abubakar collapsed during interrogation and was rushed to a nearby clinic, where he later died. The Police on Tuesday, arraigned a 20-year-old man, Onoja Kingsley, in a Wuse Zone II Magistrates’ Court for allegedly raising false claims that his genitals have “disappeared”. Kingsley of no fixed address is charged with joint act, causing grievous hurt, attempted culpable homicide, theft and giving fake information to members of the public. He, however, pleaded not guilty to the allegations brought against him by the police. The prosecuting counsel, E.A Inegbenoise, told the court that the case was reported by one Ndifreke Ebong of Gaduwa Estate, Abuja, in Oct. 7. Inegbenoise said the complainant in the company of some of his church members,were sharing flyers in preparation for its Sunday service within the FCT. He said the complainant innocently handed a copy of the flyer to the defendant with other members of his gang, now at large, around AP Filling Station at about 6:30 pm. “The defendant then unlawfully and falsely accused the complaint of stealing his manhood. “The complainant was beaten and stabbed with all kinds of dangerous weapons by members of the defendant’s gang which they later ran away and he was apprehended. “As a result of the beating, the complainant sustained some degree of injuries, ” he said. The prosecutor added that the complainant’s mobile phone valued at N500,000 and wallet containing important documents were stolen from him during the incident. He further stated that the defendant revealed at the police station during interrogation that the alleged “disappeared manhood is back and performing normal.” According to him, the offences he is charged with contravened the provision of sections 80, 248, 229, 287 and 178 of the Penal Code. The prosecutor also objected to the bail of the defendant stating that the defendant has no traceable address. He added that granting him bail would affect further police investigation and the arrest of his other members who were still at large. But the magistrate, Abba Bello, said “bail is at the discretion of the court and shall be exercised judiciously.” The Magistrate admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N1 million with a surety in like sum, who must reside within the jurisdiction of the court. He ordered that the surety addresses be verified by both the prosecutor and court’s registrar before he should be released. The case was adjourned until Nov. 20 for hearing. The National Examination Council (NECO) has said results of the 2023 Senior Secondary School Certificate will be released on Tuesday. NECO concluded the conduct of the examination in early August 2023, and 1,205,888 candidates sat for the examination. Six hundred one thousand and seventy-four candidates are male, while 584,814 are female. The exam body had planned to release the result within 45 days, but the promise did not materialise.
