The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has denied reports of an alleged scarcity of cash at banks, automated teller machines, points of sale, and bureaux de change in some major cities across the country. CBN’s Director of Corporate Communications, Isa AbdulMumin, denied the report in a statement on Thursday. AbdulMumin said the seeming cash scarcity in some locations is due to high volume withdrawals from the CBN branches by deposit money banks and panic withdrawals by customers from the ATMs. “While we note the concerns of Nigerians on the availability of cash for financial transactions, we wish to assure the public that there is sufficient stock of currency notes for economic activities in the country. “The branches of the CBN across the country are also working to ensure the seamless circulation of cash in their respective states of operation,” he said. He, therefore, urged members of the public to guard against panic withdrawals as there is sufficient stock to facilitate economic activities. “Nigerians are also advised to embrace alternative modes of payment, which would reduce pressure on using physical cash,” he said. https://.ng/2023/11/02/cbn-denies-reports-of-scarcity-of-cash/

Ahead of the November 11 governorship election in Kogi State an unprecedented mammoth crowd has been visible in most of the rallies by the dominant political parties. These are the All Progressives Congress, APC, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and the Social Democratic Party, SDP. The leading parties are all claiming dominance. However, the question remains whether the crowd will transform to victory during the polls. With nine days to the polls, the three parties are not relenting, while members of some of the weaker parties are busy cross-carpeting. .ng findings, however, indicate that the mammoth in some of the campaign rallies is as a result of home advantage. The crowd that came to Ahmed Ododo’s rally at Okene is estimated to be over 30,000 people, while that of SDP and PDP were also unprecedented. The Commissioner for Information and Communications, Evangelist Kingsley Femi Fanwo said the crowd seen at the party’s rallies at Okene were there on their own volition. “We didn’t pay anybody anything; they love the party,” he claimed. As for the SDP rally in Abocho, Dekina Local Government Area, Mr. Daniel Ijele, the campaign spokesperson, claimed the rally was crowded by supporters who had come simply for a glimpse and love for their son, Murtala Ajaka. He described it as “the mother of all rallies.” Dino Melaye of the PDP also showed his strength in Ankpa, where his Deputy (female) governorship candidate hails from. The rally was equally massive. A political analyst, Ahmed Muhammed told newsmen that Kogi West senatorial district will be the beautiful bride and would be the joker. According to him, the people of Okun-speaking area, Lokoja-Koto, from the seven local government areas will be the deciding factor of who becomes the next governor of the state. Similarly, another analyst, Hamza Aliyu, who is the Executive Director, Initiative for Grassroot Advancement, INGRA, said the mammoth crowd witnessed in the various political rallies will not translate into voting on election day. Speaking to .ng, Aliyu stated that politicians woo crowds financially to attend campaign rallies despite not having any good plan for the people. Aliyu said, “in elections, campaigns are generally a means for candidates, parties and supporters to meet and share ideas, promote manifestos and sell their positions. “However, due to our poor political orientation, coupled with little or no political party ideology, together with huge capacity of candidates to financially induce electorates (who are almost always willing accomplices), large crowds at campaign grounds almost always does not translate to votes on election day. This is a very sad development for our electoral system. “This phenomenon is so pervasive that there are occasions when single individuals are found in multiple campaign venues for different candidates. It is also a reason for the violence that breaks out at some venues. “As civil society, we need an entrenched political ideological system where parties and their supporters are known for having certain intrinsic positions on State issues such as the economy, health, etc. “This is the only way citizens can benefit maximally from the plurality of political parties. “We have and will always call for issue-based campaigns where positions of candidates and parties on topical issues form the criteria for selection rather than ethnicity, religion or gender.” Fears over election violence in Kogi East The Kogi NGOs Network, (KONGONET) has allayed fear over the increasing violence in Kogi-East ahead of the November 11 governorship election. Amb. Idris Ozovehe Muraina, chairperson, KONGONET, in a statement on Monday, frowned at what he termed “dirty politics” playing out in Kogi East. “We are happy to see the mammoth crowd gracing the campaign of political parties across the State. “It is indeed a good omen that a substantial number of Kogites are ready to cast their franchise come November 11, 2023. “However, we are seriously concerned about the ongoing pre-election violence, especially within the Eastern senatorial district of the state and the seeming dirt in pro-activeness of security agencies, especially the Nigeria police to prevent them from happening. “We want a strong mobilisation and assurance of the security agencies for a peaceful gubernatorial election come 11th November, 2023. “The past ugly experiences with regards to Kogi State gubernatorial elections should not be repeated,” he stressed. Electorate are supporting candidates based on ethnicity, not competence – Activist An activist in Kogi State, Comrade Idris Abdul Miliki has decried the way the electorate will cast their votes in the forthcoming election. Comrade Miliki, who is the Executive Director, Conscience for Human Right and Conflict Resolution, (CHRCR) told .ng that it is very worrisome and disappointing that the electorate are not supporting candidates based on ideology and competency, but were rather focusing on ethnicity. Miliki stated that all hands must be on deck to avert violence. Explaining further, Miliki said, “It is not everybody that attends your rally that likes you or will vote for you. “Some of them are mobilised through resources and based on that, they are there. It is not criminal to see people attending rallies. Meanwhile, violence should be a source of concern for all because of our history in Kogi State and the perception we have about elections. “What made this one very much worrisome is because people are not campaigning or supporting candidates or parties based on ideology or competence. “They are supporting candidates based on ethnicity. The ruling party in Kogi State has made it worse. When you have an outgoing government and its chosen successor from the same zone, it means there is a problem. “We have a party that has been in power for over seven years, and the level of performance compared to the resources available to the party is very disappointing and worrisome. “Again, we have a party where the sitting Governor is from the same local government, including the candidate that wants to succeed him and the party chairman. “That local government cannot single-handedly produce the governor by their votes. “In that case, it will be a do or die affair. What is the rationale behind these three significant persons coming from the same area? “In the Eastern and Western part of the State, the electorate are supporting candidates based on their ethnic affiliations. This is not a good thing for our democracy.” https://.ng/2023/11/02/kogi-guber-apc-pdp-sdp-scramble-for-crowd/

A four-man gang of hoodlums, in the early hours of Tuesday, attacked the Federal government-owned Radio Nigeria FM station at Idofian town, in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State. The hoodlums, who rode on two motorcycles to the station, vandalized and carted away the radio station’s cables and other valuable items. The dare-devil hoodlums struck at about 4a.m and carried out their operation after they had tied the night guard and beaten him mercilessly. Reports said they also went away with the phones of the officers on duty during the invasion. The FM frequency, which is owned by the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, FRCN, was forced to shut down operations as a result of the damaged cables. Reacting to the development, the Assistant Director of Programmes, who represented the General Manager of the station, Hajia Binta Abubakar Mora, expressed displeasure over the attack, saying it constituted a great threat to the broadcast industry in Nigeria. “This is a great threat to the broadcasting industry in Nigeria. This had earlier happened to our sister stations in Lokoja, Kogi State and even in Lafia, Nassarawa State. “As it is now, we are off-air. The damage has been done. The affected armored cables are very expensive. What it will take to fix this is something that has become a burden on the management,” she told reporters after conducting them around the station’s premises. Hajia Mora said, “However, the lives of our staff who were on duty when the incident happened are worth more than whatever they have damaged, because if anything otherwise had happened, it would have been a very sad story. We thank the Almighty God that it didn’t go beyond this.” She expressed concerns about the location of the station and called on the Nigerian government to come to their aid to enable them resume operations. Hajia Mora also called on the government to assist in making their working environment more safe and conducive to work in, stressing that the location is not friendly enough. https://.ng/2023/11/01/hoodlums-attack-radio-nigeria-fm-station-in-kwara/

The Central Bank of Nigeria has denied claims that it plans to redenominate the country’s currency, Naira, with effect from January 2023. Isa AbdulMumin, CBN’s Director of Corporate Communications, made this known on Tuesday in a statement. The reaction of the apex bank comes following a claim suggesting it plans to redenominate the country’s legal tender. The Bank refuted the claim, noting that it has no plan to restructure and redenominate the Naira. “The attention of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has been drawn to the wide circulation of a text message suggesting that the Bank plans to redenominate the Country’s legal tender, the Naira, with effect from January 2024. “We are concerned that this narrative, which we had refuted before now, appears to be gaining traction with several debates on the implication of such a policy for the Nigerian economy. “We wish to reiterate that the contents of the message are misleading. The authors of the message, in their mischief, modified text taken from an old policy move by a previous CBN Governor in 2007 to make it appear recent. “To avoid doubt, there is currently no plan by the Bank to restructure and redenominate the Naira. Whilst the Bank may be considering reforms, such are subject to laid down procedures in line with the provisions of the CBN Act, 2007. “The public is hereby advised to ignore the news report, as it is speculative and calculated to cause panic in the polity”, the statement contained. https://.ng/2023/10/31/breaking-no-plans-to-redenominate-naira-cbn-clarifies/

Minister of Education Professor Tahir Mamman has disclosed President Bola Tinubu’s plans to put an end to the issue of out-of-school children in Nigeria. Mamman made the disclosure during a tour of the remodelled Christ the King School along Wellington Bassey Way, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, constructed by Governor Umo Eno. The minister, who noted that such could only be achieved through collaboration between the local, state, and federal governments, lauded Gov Eno for the basic education infrastructural development, saying that such was in line with President Tinubu’s vision of reversing the decline in school enrollments. The minister was in Uyo for the celebration of the University of Lagos 1984 law class reunion when he made the comment during a tour of the remodelled Christ the King School. He said: “Indeed, there is hope for us as a country with the effort of all the governors, everybody, and the Federal Government working together collaboratively. “For us at the federal level, particularly the President, Bola Amed Tinubu, that is our area of focus. We want the out-of-school children to be a matter of history, and this is the way to do it.” Earlier, the governor said his administration’s determination to pay attention to education at the primary level was informed by the need to spur the passion for education among schoolchildren. “We call upon the federal government to support what we are doing. It is about children and the future of our children. Again, I want to underscore something here: that the federal and state governments can collaborate,” Gov Eno said. https://.ng/2023/10/31/tinubu-will-tackle-out-of-school-children-problem-minister/

A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has adjourned the continuation of trial of Nigerian singer Azeez Fashola, a.k.a Naira Marley, charged with cybercrime until November 13 and 30. Justice Nicholas Oweibo adjourned the case on Monday following the absence of Naira Marley from court. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is prosecuting Naira Marley on charges bordering on cyber crime. The Commission preferred the charges on May 14, 2019, but court granted him bail in the sum of N2 million, with two sureties in like sum. The EFCC alleged that Naira Marley and his accomplices conspired to use different Access Bank ATM cards to defraud their victims. Trial has since commenced in the case and is still ongoing. .ng reported that the police in Lagos had detained Naira Marley and his associate, Sam Larry, in connection with the death of Nigerian artiste, Oladimeji Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad. The Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal has postponed judgment on the appeal filed by Daniel Onjeh, the 2023 All Progressives Congress, APC Senatorial candidate for Benue South, challenging the election of Senator Abba Moro of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. The court had earlier fixed Monday (today) for the delivery of the judgment. The three-man panel of the Court of Appeal, comprising Justices A. O. Otisi; O. Obaseki, and A. M. Lamido, announced the postponement to the legal counsels of the parties involved in the case on Sunday via an official communication. The Appeal Court heard Onjeh’s appeal on October 16, following which all the Briefs of Argument were adopted and the matter was reserved for judgment. Comrade Onjeh is asking the Court of Appeal to set aside the verdict of the National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal, which earlier upheld the victory of Senator Moro in the February 25 polls. Not satisfied with the tribunal ruling, the APC candidate had asked the appeal court to declare him the winner of the election, insisting that Senator Moro was not qualified to contest the election, having allegedly presented a forged birth certificate to INEC. Onjeh is equally challenging the outcome of the election on the grounds of noncompliance with the Electoral Act 2022 (As Amended), among other irregularities. https://.ng/2023/10/30/onjeh-vs-moro-appeal-court-postpones-date-of-judgement/

The Court of Appeal sitting in Lagos has dismissed the suit by Eseme Eyiboh of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for “lack in merit” and declared Okpolupm Etteh of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the representative of the Eket/ONNA/Esit Eket/Ibeno Federal Constituency of Akwa Ibom State. The ruling was delivered on Thursday by the panel led by Justice Jummai Hannatu C. Sankey. In the ruling, the presiding judge said, “We unanimously relied upon the thorough judgment of the Justice Kudirat Jose-led Tribunal, which had affirmed Hon. Etteh, winner of the House of Representatives election of February 25, 2023 for Eket/ONNA/Esit Eket/Ibeno Federal Constituency, as declared by the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC), having scored 33,001 votes against his opponent Eyiboh (16,909 votes)”. The court ordered Eyiboh, who it said relied on mere speculations to allege that Etteh’s certificates were forged, to pay the sum of N300,000 to each of the respondents. Recall that Eyiboh, in his petition, had alleged that Etteh, the candidate of the PDP, was not qualified to stand election due to certificate forgery and therefore, urged the Tribunal to nullify his eligibility and declare him (Eyiboh) winner of the election. https://.ng/2023/10/27/court-of-appeal-affirms-rep-ettehs-election/

President Bola Tinubu has directed the Minister of Health, Ali Pate, to de-emphasise speaking about the health sector’s challenges and rather engage with development partners to birth new reforms that would improve the health and well-being of Nigerians. Tinubu bared his mind when he had an audience with the minister at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Wednesday, specifically directing Pate to pursue a very ambitious sector-wide programme that would improve population health outcomes, using the basic healthcare provision fund as a basis for reviving the primary health care system. Tinubu also told Pate to explore ways of enhancing seamless working relationships between state governments, community leaders, and traditional leaders to ensure that Nigerians get better quality services to deal with the issues that bother them, whether it’s malaria, immunisation, maternal and child health, or reproductive health, among others. Pate, who met with the President in the company of Prof Seniat Fisseha, a development partner under the auspices of the Susan-Buff Foundation, assured that going forward, plans are underway to design a social action fund to reach communities. He said they would work to get the trust of the community dwellers, through which they would be empowered and supported to solve issues that are very simple but afflicting many of the people at the grassroots level. “While having an audience with the President, we discussed some important issues regarding Nigerians’ health and social well-being. As we all know, the President is very committed and has directed that we do all we can to improve the health and well-being of all Nigerians as part of his renewed hope agenda. ”Accordingly, in recent days, he has approved three important steps for us to move forward and has asked us to talk less and do more. And in that spirit, he, in fact, has asked us to pursue a very ambitious sector-wide programme to improve population health outcomes, using the basic healthcare provision fund as a basis for reviving our primary healthcare system, working with state governments and community leaders, traditional leaders to ensure that Nigerians get better quality services to deal with the issues that bother them, whether it’s malaria, whether it’s immunisation, maternal and child health, reproductive health—those are elements that have a direct bearing on the health and well-being of Nigerians, with the state governments and with our development partners. “So that sector-wide programme is underway, and our visitor today is committed to working with us to work with countries systems, not set up parallel systems. And we’re very glad that the Susan-Buffett Foundation is willing to partner with the Government of Nigeria to advance the health and well-being of all, especially our adolescent girls and women. “The second item is to unlock the value chain in the healthcare space. Mr President has also approved a presidential initiative to unlock the healthcare value chain that will help drive the medical industrialisation agenda with clear targets. “It will require the public and private sectors to work hand in hand. Government does what it needs to do to provide the enabling environment and the private sector getting his act together to ensure that we produce the things critical for Nigeria’s health and well-being while creating economic value and creating jobs,” Pate told State House correspondents. https://.ng/2023/10/26/de-emphasise-talks-about-healthcare-sector-challenges-tinubu-tells-pate/

A former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega has reacted to reports of him saying the 2023 elections were compromised. Reports had it that Jega made the remark at a two-day retreat organised by the Senate in Ikot Ipene, Akwa Ibom State. Jega was quoted as saying: “We have seen, in 2023 elections, the damaging effect of how people in the corridors of power get their client/partisan nominees appointed, without being thoroughly screened, and then they are influenced to compromise the integrity of elections.” Reacting, Jega said the report was not a true reflection of his position. A terse statement by his Senior Research Assistant, Princess Hamman-Obels, reads partly: “The attention of Prof. Attahiru Jega has been drawn to a misleading report published in a number of online newspapers quoting him to have commented that the 2023 elections were compromised. “The report making the rounds is incorrect and not an accurate reflection of the presenter’s position. “Professor Jega categorically denies making this particular comment about the 2023 polls.” https://.ng/2023/10/24/2023-polls-jega-clears-air-on-saying-election-was-compromised/

As the Supreme Court commences hearing on the February 25, 2023 Presidential Election Appeal, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), says it is confident that, guided by the provisions of the law, the body of evidence, circumstances, and facts presented before it, the Apex Court will deliver justice in the matter. In a statement signed by Debo Ologunagba, the National Publicity Secretary of the party, the main opposition party said it believes that the issues of the February 2023 Presidential election—the alleged violation of rules and laws, the brazen manipulations and falsifications in perversion of the country’s electoral process—have put democracy in a precarious situation. According to the party, Nigerians and indeed the whole world look forward to the Supreme Court for justice in the hope that the Court will apply the laws, including the express provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), the Electoral Act, 2022 and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Guidelines and Regulations in delivering substantial justice in the matter. The PDP said the earnest expectation of Nigerians and lovers of democracy across the world is that the Supreme Court will use this case to firmly validate the maxim that the Judiciary is the last hope of the common man. “Nigerians are therefore optimistic in hoping that the Supreme Court will dispense substantial Justice according to law and fact in the Appeal,” the party said. https://.ng/2023/10/22/atiku-vs-tinubu-well-win-at-supreme-court-pdp-assures-supporters/

The Acting Chairman of Action Alliance (AA), Kogi State chapter, Fred Ambo, says the party’s governorship candidate, Olayinka Braimoh, has what it takes to turn the fortunes of the state around. Addressing a press briefing in Lokoja on Saturday, the party chairman said Braimoh stands out among other candidates in the Kogi governorship race with his clear vision for the state and actionable plans to develop Kogi. Ambo said having moved round most wards in Kogi State, he is confident that Braimoh will emerge victorious on November 11. “Aside being the most accessible among the governorship candidates, Braimoh is the brightest among the pack. “Our governorship candidate has engaged people in the nooks and crannies of the state, touring most wards across the 21 local government areas in Kogi state. “He has presented a very clear and detailed vision for the state as encapsulated in his STAT Agenda. His plans to create and distribute wealth remains the most practical approach to the challenges bedeviling Kogi State,” he said. He, however, urged the general public to ignore the former chairman of Action Alliance in the state, Musa Ukwenya, who, according to him, is trying to defraud unsuspecting politicians that he still leads the party in Kogi. He explained that Ukwenya ceased to be state chairman of the party after the Supreme Court judgement that affirmed the current national leadership of the party. Ambo said his coming on board was necessitated by the dismissal of the suit by Kenneth Udeze challenging Adekunle Rufai Omoaje, the National Chairman of Action Alliance. “Musa Ukwenya belonged to the Udeze faction and had since ceased to be chairman of the party in Kogi State. After series of legal battles, the Supreme Court laid the problem to rest by recognising Omoaje as the authentic chairman of the party. The Omoaje-led national leadership is the one recognised by INEC. “We, the executives and members of Action Alliance, want to make it categorically clear that the party is intact and in support of the assignment of Otunba Olayinka Braimoh for the state. “Without mincing words, AA in Kogi remains one house and body determined to win this election. We urge all our members not to be distracted by the activities of the former chairman, Musa Ukwenya, who has been going about to disparage our movement for a better Kogi State,” he said. He urged other members not to be distracted but remain focused on winning the November governorship election. Responding to questions from newsmen, Ambo said the AA governorship candidate is in the race to win and will not step down for another candidate as been speculated in some quarters. “Rather, we expect candidates to step down for Olayinka Braimoh before November 11. He is stepping up, and won’t step down for anyone.” https://.ng/2023/10/21/guber-poll-our-candidate-will-change-the-fortunes-of-kogi-action-alliance/ |

The Ogun State Government is set to establish the Ministries of Mineral Resources, Information Communication Technology (ICT) and Digital Economy and Energy. This was disclosed by Governor Dapo Abiodun during a meeting with Permanent Secretaries held at the Executive Chambers of the Governor’s Office, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta. Prince Abiodun also disclosed that the Ministry of Youths would be separated from the Ministry of Sports in preparation for the setting up of the Ogun State Sports Commission. Abiodun noted that the establishment of the new ministries would avail his administration the opportunity to focus more on the development of those critical sectors. He said that it is imperative to have full fledged ministerial status for those sectors for the administration to achieve the objectives set forth in those areas. The governor noted that the prospect of Ogun becoming an oil producing state during his tenure is higher, adding that attention is also being paid to electricity generation following the unbundling of that sector. On the idea behind the Ministry of Information Communication Technology (ICT) and Digital Economy, Prince Abiodun described Ogun as the education capital of Nigeria, with many youths in the state being ICT savvy. The new Ministry, he said, will take care of the needs of the youths in the state on terms of employment. He spoke further: “I had also mentioned in the course of the swearing-in of the commissioners that we are establishing new ministries. “We intend to establish about three or four new ministries; the Ministries of Mineral Resources; Information Communication Technology (ICT) and Digital Economy and we are creating the Ministry of Youths. “We are removing the Ministry of Sports from the Ministry of Youths because we want to set up the Ogun State Sports Commission. We are also considering setting up the Ministry of Energy. “The reasons why we decided to set up this new ministries is because those areas are now going to be areas of focus for us and we believe that for us to achieve the objectives that we are setting forth in those areas, it is important for them to become full fledged ministries and have all the required administrative support that will allow them to achieve their objectives.” Governor Abiodun commended the permanent secretaries and civil servants in the state for their prayers and support, especially after the Tribunal judgement that was in his favour. Abiodun called for synergy between political appointees and civil servants, adding that it is important to work together for the success of the administration. According to him, civil servants and political appointees must not been seen to be competing, but complementing each other, adding that such collaboration can only be in the interest of the state. He added: “It is important for the success of our administration for all of us to work together. There must be cooperation between civil servants and the appointees; commissioners, special advisers and so on because we all have one goal is the overall wellbeing and welfare of the administration and the good people of Ogun State.” https://.ng/2023/10/18/ogun-will-create-ministries-of-energy-mineral-resources-ict-and-digital-economy-abiodun/
