PoliticsWike Vs Fubara: Rivers Governor Issues Press Statement by Thonyb(op): 11:04am On Nov 04, 2023
The Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, has apologised to the people of the state over the recent political crisis in the state.

In a statement on Saturday, Fubara described the crisis as “regrettable anxieties.”

According to him, it was important to make sacrifices for peace to reign.

Fubara addressed the bombing of the state House of Assembly complex and the division among lawmakers.

The governor also expressed his appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for his intervention in the rift with his predecessor, Nyesom Wike.

The statement reads, “My dear good people of Rivers State, I consider it necessary to issue this press statement on the developments of the past few days in our dear state

“Late on Sunday, October 29, 2023, I was inundated with reports that the hallowed chamber of the Rivers State House of Assembly has been gutted by fire. The blaze was successfully put out by the fire service, after which security agencies took control of the situation.

“My visit to the assembly complex on Monday, October 30, 2023, was to assess the level of damage and undertake remedial measures to protect lives and property within the assembly complex. I charged the security agencies to thoroughly investigate the incident and report it to me.

“Shortly after, I got reports that the state House of Assembly had broken into two factions: one claiming to have impeached and suspended the House Leader and three others preparatory to initiating an impeachment action against me, and the other rival faction impeaching the Speaker and Deputy Speaker, thus sparking off some form of political crisis.

“I wish to thank the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu, for his fatherly intervention, which opened a series of communication channels to facilitate the timely resolution of the festering crises. I wish to also thank our elders who are currently intervening in the matter.”

Fubara added, “Let me clearly state that my actions are aimed at restoring peace and stability in our state. I am a man of peace and as governor, the advancement of our state is my primary concern.

“Consequently, no sacrifice is too much for me to make to achieve this objective. Furthermore, as leaders, it is the collective responsibility of the immediate past governor and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, and my humble self, to leverage our positions and influences within and outside the state to advance the progress, security and well-being of our people.

“We must, therefore, not allow circumstances that could retard all efforts at achieving greatness for our people to prevail.

“On our part, we are always willing and ready to embrace the path to lasting peace and tranquility with a commitment to consummating all efforts and initiatives by Mr. President and other well-meaning Nigerians, including my brother governors and the elders.

“I assure the people of Rivers State that peace will certainly prevail and we shall continue to work together to advance the peace, security and progress of our state.”

CrimeLagos Court Issues Bench Warrant For Arrest Of Cletus Ibeto by Thonyb(op): 6:46am On Nov 04, 2023
The Lagos State High Court, sitting in Ikeja, Lagos, has issued a bench warrant for the arrest of businessman Cletus Ibeto who failed to appear in court for his arraignment over an alleged N4.8bn fraud.

A statement by Dele Oyewale, Head of Media and Publicity, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, said Justice I.O. Ijelu gave the warrant on Friday.

The judge had, on October 5, 2023, adjourned till November 3, 2023, the arraignment of Ibeto alongside Ibeto Energy Development Company and Odoh Holdings on 10-count charges bordering on obtaining by false pretences, fraudulent conversion of property, criminal breach of trust, forgery, and deception, following an application and appeal by his lawyer, Onyechi Ikpeazu.

Mr Ikpeazu, while seeking an adjournment, had told the court that: “The law is not a respecter of any person. I am of the firm view that this is a matter that can be resolved, and if given some time.”

The defence counsel further told the court that he had no medical report with him in court to explain the absence of the defendant, adding that the issue at stake was one that could be resolved between the complainant and the defendants.

Responding, prosecution counsel Rotimi Jacobs said though plea bargaining was encouraged even in criminal matters, “the EFCC gave them the opportunity to go and resolve their differences, but they did not seize the opportunity, even before the charges were filed.

“There should be an arraignment first before the court will assume jurisdiction to do anything”, he said.

PoliticsI Can Advise Akpabio, I’m Older Than Him – Ndume by Thonyb(op): 1:06pm On Nov 03, 2023
The Senate Chief Whip, Senator Ali Ndume, has downplayed the reported rift with the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.

Ndume said he is older than Akpabio and can advise him on issues concerning the Senate.

He spoke while featuring on Arise TV programme, Morning Show on Friday.

According to Ndume: “I’m older than Akpabio and can advise him on issues of the Senate. I was the DG campaign of Akpabio, so by virtue of my position, I was his number one supporter and marketer to become the Senate President.

“We can disagree to agree, but not to fight. Myself and Akpabio are colleagues, we have the same interest.”

In October, Akpabio and Ndume were involved in a shouting match on the floor of the senate.

The friction led to Ndume walking out of the Senate while in session.

PoliticsIgnorant People Accusing Me Of Demanding 25% – Wike by Thonyb(op): 7:02am On Nov 03, 2023
Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike has described as ignorant those accusing him of demanding 25 per cent from the Rivers government.

Wike stated this when a delegation of the Rivers Caucus in the 10th National Assembly, comprising three senators and 11 members of the House of Representatives, visited him in Abuja.

A crisis had erupted in Rivers after an attempt by the Rivers Assembly to impeach Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

“I was governor for eight years. I am now FCT Minister, and some will say that I am asking for 25 per cent. That is madness. I am not interested in the governance of Rivers; I am not interested. I am here as a governor in FCT, but I am interested in the political structure of Rivers, which we have built over the years.

“If anybody dares to bring it down, the person will face the crisis he wants in his life. Perform or don’t perform, but don’t touch our political structure. Anybody who puts his hand in our structure, anything you see, take it,” Wike warned.

He urged members of the caucus not to disappoint the state but to work as a team for the good of the people of Rivers.

“When you make mistakes, we will call you and tell you that you are making a mistake. Take it in good faith that we are calling your attention because we think that you are derailing.

“But when we call you, don’t say we are expecting a kickback of 25 per cent from you or so and so per cent. All of us are one. We’ve built this political structure for a long time, since 2015, and we have emerged victorious.

“As the opposition party, from 2015, I saw hell. The Federal Government fought me left, right, and centre, but with your support, we survived. When you work as a team, you’ll discover that it is difficult for an outsider to defeat you at home,” Wike said.

BusinessCBN Denies Reports Of Scarcity Of Cash by Thonyb(op): 8:21pm On Nov 02, 2023
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has denied reports of an alleged scarcity of cash at banks, automated teller machines, points of sale, and bureaux de change in some major cities across the country.

CBN’s Director of Corporate Communications, Isa AbdulMumin, denied the report in a statement on Thursday.

AbdulMumin said the seeming cash scarcity in some locations is due to high volume withdrawals from the CBN branches by deposit money banks and panic withdrawals by customers from the ATMs.

“While we note the concerns of Nigerians on the availability of cash for financial transactions, we wish to assure the public that there is sufficient stock of currency notes for economic activities in the country.

“The branches of the CBN across the country are also working to ensure the seamless circulation of cash in their respective states of operation,” he said.

He, therefore, urged members of the public to guard against panic withdrawals as there is sufficient stock to facilitate economic activities.

“Nigerians are also advised to embrace alternative modes of payment, which would reduce pressure on using physical cash,” he said.

PoliticsKogi Guber: APC, PDP, SDP Scramble For Crowd by Thonyb(op): 2:06pm On Nov 02, 2023
Ahead of the November 11 governorship election in Kogi State an unprecedented mammoth crowd has been visible in most of the rallies by the dominant political parties.

These are the All Progressives Congress, APC, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and the Social Democratic Party, SDP.

The leading parties are all claiming dominance.

However, the question remains whether the crowd will transform to victory during the polls.

With nine days to the polls, the three parties are not relenting, while members of some of the weaker parties are busy cross-carpeting.

.ng findings, however, indicate that the mammoth in some of the campaign rallies is as a result of home advantage.

The crowd that came to Ahmed Ododo’s rally at Okene is estimated to be over 30,000 people, while that of SDP and PDP were also unprecedented.

The Commissioner for Information and Communications, Evangelist Kingsley Femi Fanwo said the crowd seen at the party’s rallies at Okene were there on their own volition.

“We didn’t pay anybody anything; they love the party,” he claimed.

As for the SDP rally in Abocho, Dekina Local Government Area, Mr. Daniel Ijele, the campaign spokesperson, claimed the rally was crowded by supporters who had come simply for a glimpse and love for their son, Murtala Ajaka.

He described it as “the mother of all rallies.”

Dino Melaye of the PDP also showed his strength in Ankpa, where his Deputy (female) governorship candidate hails from.

The rally was equally massive.

A political analyst, Ahmed Muhammed told newsmen that Kogi West senatorial district will be the beautiful bride and would be the joker.

According to him, the people of Okun-speaking area, Lokoja-Koto, from the seven local government areas will be the deciding factor of who becomes the next governor of the state.

Similarly, another analyst, Hamza Aliyu, who is the Executive Director, Initiative for Grassroot Advancement, INGRA, said the mammoth crowd witnessed in the various political rallies will not translate into voting on election day.

Speaking to .ng, Aliyu stated that politicians woo crowds financially to attend campaign rallies despite not having any good plan for the people.

Aliyu said, “in elections, campaigns are generally a means for candidates, parties and supporters to meet and share ideas, promote manifestos and sell their positions.

“However, due to our poor political orientation, coupled with little or no political party ideology, together with huge capacity of candidates to financially induce electorates (who are almost always willing accomplices), large crowds at campaign grounds almost always does not translate to votes on election day. This is a very sad development for our electoral system.

“This phenomenon is so pervasive that there are occasions when single individuals are found in multiple campaign venues for different candidates. It is also a reason for the violence that breaks out at some venues.

“As civil society, we need an entrenched political ideological system where parties and their supporters are known for having certain intrinsic positions on State issues such as the economy, health, etc.

“This is the only way citizens can benefit maximally from the plurality of political parties.

“We have and will always call for issue-based campaigns where positions of candidates and parties on topical issues form the criteria for selection rather than ethnicity, religion or gender.”

Fears over election violence in Kogi East

The Kogi NGOs Network, (KONGONET) has allayed fear over the increasing violence in Kogi-East ahead of the November 11 governorship election.

Amb. Idris Ozovehe Muraina, chairperson, KONGONET, in a statement on Monday, frowned at what he termed “dirty politics” playing out in Kogi East.

“We are happy to see the mammoth crowd gracing the campaign of political parties across the State.

“It is indeed a good omen that a substantial number of Kogites are ready to cast their franchise come November 11, 2023.

“However, we are seriously concerned about the ongoing pre-election violence, especially within the Eastern senatorial district of the state and the seeming dirt in pro-activeness of security agencies, especially the Nigeria police to prevent them from happening.

“We want a strong mobilisation and assurance of the security agencies for a peaceful gubernatorial election come 11th November, 2023.

“The past ugly experiences with regards to Kogi State gubernatorial elections should not be repeated,” he stressed.

Electorate are supporting candidates based on ethnicity, not competence – Activist

An activist in Kogi State, Comrade Idris Abdul Miliki has decried the way the electorate will cast their votes in the forthcoming election.

Comrade Miliki, who is the Executive Director, Conscience for Human Right and Conflict Resolution, (CHRCR) told .ng that it is very worrisome and disappointing that the electorate are not supporting candidates based on ideology and competency, but were rather focusing on ethnicity.

Miliki stated that all hands must be on deck to avert violence.

Explaining further, Miliki said, “It is not everybody that attends your rally that likes you or will vote for you.

“Some of them are mobilised through resources and based on that, they are there. It is not criminal to see people attending rallies. Meanwhile, violence should be a source of concern for all because of our history in Kogi State and the perception we have about elections.

“What made this one very much worrisome is because people are not campaigning or supporting candidates or parties based on ideology or competence.

“They are supporting candidates based on ethnicity. The ruling party in Kogi State has made it worse. When you have an outgoing government and its chosen successor from the same zone, it means there is a problem.

“We have a party that has been in power for over seven years, and the level of performance compared to the resources available to the party is very disappointing and worrisome.

“Again, we have a party where the sitting Governor is from the same local government, including the candidate that wants to succeed him and the party chairman.

“That local government cannot single-handedly produce the governor by their votes.

“In that case, it will be a do or die affair. What is the rationale behind these three significant persons coming from the same area?

“In the Eastern and Western part of the State, the electorate are supporting candidates based on their ethnic affiliations. This is not a good thing for our democracy.”

Politics3 Delta Senators Victorious In Appeal Court by Thonyb(op): 6:45am On Nov 02, 2023
The Court of Appeal has upheld the victories of three Delta senators and a member of the House of Representatives.

The senators are Prince Ned Nwoko, Joel-Onowakpo Thomas, and Ede Dafinone, respectively of Delta North, South, and Central senatorial districts, and Francis Waive of Udu/Ughelli North/South federal constituency.

Delivering the judgement on the winners of the February 25, 2023, Delta National Assembly elections, Justice Olubunmi Oyewole of the Courts of Appeal, Asaba Division, stated that the five issues of appeal filed by Thomas were meritorious, declaring the earlier judgement given by the tribunal set aside.

The court subsequently awarded N250,000 against Michael Diden (aka Ejele) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

In a related development, the Court of Appeal, Lagos, affirmed the tribunal judgement, declaring PDP’s Prince Ned Nwoko the legitimate winner of the Delta North senatorial election.

The court sitting in Lagos dismissed the appeals of Peter Nwaoboshi of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Ken Kanma of the Labour Party (LP) for lack of merit.

The National Assembly elections petitions tribunal in Asaba, Delta State, had earlier ruled in September that Nwoko overwhelmingly won the February 25 election.

Also, the Court of Appeal in Lagos upheld the election of Senator Dafinone against PDP candidate Chief Igboyota Amori.

Similarly, the court on Wednesday set aside the tribunal judgement that earlier nullified the election of Rev. Francis Waive, the member representing Udu/Ughelli North/South federal constituency, in a suit by PDP candidate Solomon Awhinawhi.

The lower court had ruled that Waive was not qualified to contest the 2023 general elections because the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) failed to publish his educational qualifications, which were submitted to INEC as required by law.

Waive, who is a member of the APC, challenged the tribunal’s verdict, arguing that he submitted all the necessary documents to INEC and that the non-publication of his qualifications on the INEC portal was not his fault and that it’s not a ground known to law for the nullification of an election.

In a unanimous judgement delivered in the case, the appellate court upheld Waive’s appeal and dismissed the cross-appeal filed by his opponent, Solomon Awhinawhi of the PDP.

The court granted all the reliefs sought by Waive and awarded N500,000 each as cost against Awhinawhi, PDP and INEC.

The court held that the non-publication of Waive’s qualifications by INEC was not a ground for disqualification and that there was no evidence to prove that he forged or falsified any document.

The court also affirmed Waive’s victory at the polls, saying that he scored the highest number of valid votes cast in the constituency.

PoliticsYou Either Deliver Results Or Face Sack – Tinubu Threatens Cabinet Members by Thonyb(op): 1:35pm On Nov 01, 2023
President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday, threatened to sack any of his cabinet members who fail to deliver on the specific mandate of his or her ministry as his administration settles down to the business of governance.

Tinubu handed down the threat while declaring the 2023 Cabinet Retreat for Ministers, Presidential Aides, Permanent Secretaries and Top Government Functionaries open at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Speaking on the theme: “Delivering on the Renewed Hope Agenda”, Tinubu said his administration was not oblivious to the challenges ahead but there must be a clear-cut decision and action plan by all stakeholders to wriggle out of the problems.

The President also stated that since becoming President, he had graciously accepted all challenges and liabilities thrown at him by his predecessor.

He said there would be no room for excuses, hence the reason he took his time to assemble all the best brains in his cabinet, who can aid the administration to meet the yearnings and aspirations of the citizens.

The President said he had directed the Special Adviser on Policy Coordination, Bala Hadiza to head the Result and Delivery Unit, through which key performance indicators of all ministerial appointees would be monitored.

He said at the end of the retreat all ministers would sign a bond of understanding to track those performing to expectation or not.

“If you are performing nothing to fear, if you miss the objectives, we review, if you have no performance you leave us, no one is an island because the buck stops on my desk,” Tinubu stated at the retreat.

Among the key priorities the Tinubu administration wants the cabinet members to focus on are food security, ending poverty, economic growth and job creation, access to capital, inclusivity: drawing on skill base, security, fairness and rule of law and anti-corruption.

CrimeHoodlums Attack Radio Nigeria FM Station In Kwara by Thonyb(op): 6:15am On Nov 01, 2023
A four-man gang of hoodlums, in the early hours of Tuesday, attacked the Federal government-owned Radio Nigeria FM station at Idofian town, in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State.

The hoodlums, who rode on two motorcycles to the station, vandalized and carted away the radio station’s cables and other valuable items.

The dare-devil hoodlums struck at about 4a.m and carried out their operation after they had tied the night guard and beaten him mercilessly.

Reports said they also went away with the phones of the officers on duty during the invasion.

The FM frequency, which is owned by the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, FRCN, was forced to shut down operations as a result of the damaged cables.

Reacting to the development, the Assistant Director of Programmes, who represented the General Manager of the station, Hajia Binta Abubakar Mora, expressed displeasure over the attack, saying it constituted a great threat to the broadcast industry in Nigeria.

“This is a great threat to the broadcasting industry in Nigeria. This had earlier happened to our sister stations in Lokoja, Kogi State and even in Lafia, Nassarawa State.

“As it is now, we are off-air. The damage has been done. The affected armored cables are very expensive. What it will take to fix this is something that has become a burden on the management,” she told reporters after conducting them around the station’s premises.

Hajia Mora said, “However, the lives of our staff who were on duty when the incident happened are worth more than whatever they have damaged, because if anything otherwise had happened, it would have been a very sad story. We thank the Almighty God that it didn’t go beyond this.”

She expressed concerns about the location of the station and called on the Nigerian government to come to their aid to enable them resume operations.

Hajia Mora also called on the government to assist in making their working environment more safe and conducive to work in, stressing that the location is not friendly enough.

BusinessBREAKING: No Plans To Redenominate Naira – CBN Clarifies by Thonyb(op): 4:03pm On Oct 31, 2023
The Central Bank of Nigeria has denied claims that it plans to redenominate the country’s currency, Naira, with effect from January 2023.

Isa AbdulMumin, CBN’s Director of Corporate Communications, made this known on Tuesday in a statement.

The reaction of the apex bank comes following a claim suggesting it plans to redenominate the country’s legal tender.

The Bank refuted the claim, noting that it has no plan to restructure and redenominate the Naira.

“The attention of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has been drawn to the wide circulation of a text message suggesting that the Bank plans to redenominate the Country’s legal tender, the Naira, with effect from January 2024.

“We are concerned that this narrative, which we had refuted before now, appears to be gaining traction with several debates on the implication of such a policy for the Nigerian economy.

“We wish to reiterate that the contents of the message are misleading. The authors of the message, in their mischief, modified text taken from an old policy move by a previous CBN Governor in 2007 to make it appear recent.

“To avoid doubt, there is currently no plan by the Bank to restructure and redenominate the Naira. Whilst the Bank may be considering reforms, such are subject to laid down procedures in line with the provisions of the CBN Act, 2007.

“The public is hereby advised to ignore the news report, as it is speculative and calculated to cause panic in the polity”, the statement contained.

PoliticsTinubu Will Tackle Out-of-school Children Problem – Minister by Thonyb(op): 1:22pm On Oct 31, 2023
Minister of Education Professor Tahir Mamman has disclosed President Bola Tinubu’s plans to put an end to the issue of out-of-school children in Nigeria.

Mamman made the disclosure during a tour of the remodelled Christ the King School along Wellington Bassey Way, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, constructed by Governor Umo Eno.

The minister, who noted that such could only be achieved through collaboration between the local, state, and federal governments, lauded Gov Eno for the basic education infrastructural development, saying that such was in line with President Tinubu’s vision of reversing the decline in school enrollments.

The minister was in Uyo for the celebration of the University of Lagos 1984 law class reunion when he made the comment during a tour of the remodelled Christ the King School.

He said: “Indeed, there is hope for us as a country with the effort of all the governors, everybody, and the Federal Government working together collaboratively.

“For us at the federal level, particularly the President, Bola Amed Tinubu, that is our area of focus. We want the out-of-school children to be a matter of history, and this is the way to do it.”

Earlier, the governor said his administration’s determination to pay attention to education at the primary level was informed by the need to spur the passion for education among schoolchildren.

“We call upon the federal government to support what we are doing. It is about children and the future of our children. Again, I want to underscore something here: that the federal and state governments can collaborate,” Gov Eno said.

CrimeAlleged Cyber Crime: Court Adjourns Naira Marley’s Case by Thonyb(op): 1:57pm On Oct 30, 2023
A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has adjourned the continuation of trial of Nigerian singer Azeez Fashola, a.k.a Naira Marley, charged with cybercrime until November 13 and 30.

Justice Nicholas Oweibo adjourned the case on Monday following the absence of Naira Marley from court.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is prosecuting Naira Marley on charges bordering on cyber crime.

The Commission preferred the charges on May 14, 2019, but court granted him bail in the sum of N2 million, with two sureties in like sum.

The EFCC alleged that Naira Marley and his accomplices conspired to use different Access Bank ATM cards to defraud their victims.

Trial has since commenced in the case and is still ongoing.

.ng reported that the police in Lagos had detained Naira Marley and his associate, Sam Larry, in connection with the death of Nigerian artiste, Oladimeji Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad.

However, when the case was called on Monday, Mr Olalekan Ojo (SAN) informed the court that Naira Marley was still clearly absent from his trial, inspite of the court’s order for his production.

In his response, the prosecutor told the court that although she had prayed the court for a production warrant of the defendant, he was still absent.

The court consequently adjourned the case until Nov. 13 and 30 for continuation of trial

PoliticsOnjeh Vs Moro: Appeal Court Postpones Date Of Judgement by Thonyb(op): 10:18am On Oct 30, 2023
The Abuja Division of the Court of Appeal has postponed judgment on the appeal filed by Daniel Onjeh, the 2023 All Progressives Congress, APC Senatorial candidate for Benue South, challenging the election of Senator Abba Moro of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

The court had earlier fixed Monday (today) for the delivery of the judgment.

The three-man panel of the Court of Appeal, comprising Justices A. O. Otisi; O. Obaseki, and A. M. Lamido, announced the postponement to the legal counsels of the parties involved in the case on Sunday via an official communication.

The Appeal Court heard Onjeh’s appeal on October 16, following which all the Briefs of Argument were adopted and the matter was reserved for judgment.

Comrade Onjeh is asking the Court of Appeal to set aside the verdict of the National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal, which earlier upheld the victory of Senator Moro in the February 25 polls.

Not satisfied with the tribunal ruling, the APC candidate had asked the appeal court to declare him the winner of the election, insisting that Senator Moro was not qualified to contest the election, having allegedly presented a forged birth certificate to INEC.

Onjeh is equally challenging the outcome of the election on the grounds of noncompliance with the Electoral Act 2022 (As Amended), among other irregularities.

PoliticsCourt Of Appeal Affirms Rep Etteh’s Election by Thonyb(op): 4:28pm On Oct 27, 2023
The Court of Appeal sitting in Lagos has dismissed the suit by Eseme Eyiboh of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for “lack in merit” and declared Okpolupm Etteh of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the representative of the Eket/ONNA/Esit Eket/Ibeno Federal Constituency of Akwa Ibom State.

The ruling was delivered on Thursday by the panel led by Justice Jummai Hannatu C. Sankey.

In the ruling, the presiding judge said, “We unanimously relied upon the thorough judgment of the Justice Kudirat Jose-led Tribunal, which had affirmed Hon. Etteh, winner of the House of Representatives election of February 25, 2023 for Eket/ONNA/Esit Eket/Ibeno Federal Constituency, as declared by the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC), having scored 33,001 votes against his opponent Eyiboh (16,909 votes)”.

The court ordered Eyiboh, who it said relied on mere speculations to allege that Etteh’s certificates were forged, to pay the sum of N300,000 to each of the respondents.

Recall that Eyiboh, in his petition, had alleged that Etteh, the candidate of the PDP, was not qualified to stand election due to certificate forgery and therefore, urged the Tribunal to nullify his eligibility and declare him (Eyiboh) winner of the election.

PoliticsWe’ve Moved On From Supreme Court Judgment – LP by Thonyb(op): 6:45am On Oct 27, 2023
The Labour Party (LP) has announced its decision to move on following the Supreme Court judgment that affirmed the victory of Presidential Bola Tinubu in the February 25 election.

Julius Abure, the LP National Chairman, made the remark while accusing the Supreme Court of shredding the fabric of justice and good conscience in its verdicts.

The Justice John Okoro-led five-man panel of justices had thrown out LP presidential candidate, Peter Obi’s appeal challenging Tinubu’s victory in the last presidential election.

Obi had called for the disqualification of Vice President Kashim Shettima due to double nomination.

He claimed that Shettima was not qualified to serve as Tinubu’s running mate during the last presidential election.

But, Justice Okoro of the Supreme Court said it cannot allow the matter of double nomination to be relitigated.

The justice recalled that the apex court issued a judgement on the matter when it was before a lower court.

“This matter ought not to have come here. When the matter was pending at the trial court, this court delivered judgement on it. This appeal lacks merit and is hereby dismissed,” the court ruled.

In a similar vein, the apex court dismissed the appeal of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, challenging Tinubu’s victory.

Faulting the Supreme Court judgment, Abure described the verdict as disappointing while expressing hope for the future.

A statement by Abure reads partly: “The leadership of Labour Party watched as the sacred fabric of justice and good conscience was shredded today at the Supreme Court as it delivered its verdict in the case between our party, the presidential candidate and the APC presidential candidate.

“We are indeed very shocked and surprised that even the apex Court will toe the line of an earlier judgement in spite of all the flaws associated with the judgement delivered by the Presidential Election Appeal Tribunal.

“Having conclusively exercised our fundamental rights as gifted to us by the laws of the land, we have no other choice but to move on. We may be disappointed and dismayed by the outcome of the exercise, but we have chosen to trudge on and to remain optimistic of what the future holds for the nation.

“We weep for our institutions that cannot rise to the occasion and courageously defend democracy and the voices of our people.”

PoliticsDe-emphasise Talks About Healthcare Sector Challenges – Tinubu Tells Pate by Thonyb(op): 6:28am On Oct 26, 2023
President Bola Tinubu has directed the Minister of Health, Ali Pate, to de-emphasise speaking about the health sector’s challenges and rather engage with development partners to birth new reforms that would improve the health and well-being of Nigerians.

Tinubu bared his mind when he had an audience with the minister at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Wednesday, specifically directing Pate to pursue a very ambitious sector-wide programme that would improve population health outcomes, using the basic healthcare provision fund as a basis for reviving the primary health care system.

Tinubu also told Pate to explore ways of enhancing seamless working relationships between state governments, community leaders, and traditional leaders to ensure that Nigerians get better quality services to deal with the issues that bother them, whether it’s malaria, immunisation, maternal and child health, or reproductive health, among others.

Pate, who met with the President in the company of Prof Seniat Fisseha, a development partner under the auspices of the Susan-Buff Foundation, assured that going forward, plans are underway to design a social action fund to reach communities.

He said they would work to get the trust of the community dwellers, through which they would be empowered and supported to solve issues that are very simple but afflicting many of the people at the grassroots level.

“While having an audience with the President, we discussed some important issues regarding Nigerians’ health and social well-being. As we all know, the President is very committed and has directed that we do all we can to improve the health and well-being of all Nigerians as part of his renewed hope agenda. ⁣

⁣”Accordingly, in recent days, he has approved three important steps for us to move forward and has asked us to talk less and do more. And in that spirit, he, in fact, has asked us to pursue a very ambitious sector-wide programme to improve population health outcomes, using the basic healthcare provision fund as a basis for reviving our primary healthcare system, working with state governments and community leaders, traditional leaders to ensure that Nigerians get better quality services to deal with the issues that bother them, whether it’s malaria, whether it’s immunisation, maternal and child health, reproductive health—those are elements that have a direct bearing on the health and well-being of Nigerians, with the state governments and with our development partners. ⁣

“So that sector-wide programme is underway, and our visitor today is committed to working with us to work with countries systems, not set up parallel systems. And we’re very glad that the Susan-Buffett Foundation is willing to partner with the Government of Nigeria to advance the health and well-being of all, especially our adolescent girls and women. ⁣

“The second item is to unlock the value chain in the healthcare space. Mr President has also approved a presidential initiative to unlock the healthcare value chain that will help drive the medical industrialisation agenda with clear targets.

“It will require the public and private sectors to work hand in hand. Government does what it needs to do to provide the enabling environment and the private sector getting his act together to ensure that we produce the things critical for Nigeria’s health and well-being while creating economic value and creating jobs,” Pate told State House correspondents. ⁣

PoliticsAtiku Vs Tinubu: We’ll Win At Supreme Court – PDP Assures Supporters by Thonyb(op): 6:30am On Oct 23, 2023
As the Supreme Court commences hearing on the February 25, 2023 Presidential Election Appeal, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), says it is confident that, guided by the provisions of the law, the body of evidence, circumstances, and facts presented before it, the Apex Court will deliver justice in the matter.

In a statement signed by Debo Ologunagba, the National Publicity Secretary of the party, the main opposition party said it believes that the issues of the February 2023 Presidential election—the alleged violation of rules and laws, the brazen manipulations and falsifications in perversion of the country’s electoral process—have put democracy in a precarious situation.

According to the party, Nigerians and indeed the whole world look forward to the Supreme Court for justice in the hope that the Court will apply the laws, including the express provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), the Electoral Act, 2022 and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Guidelines and Regulations in delivering substantial justice in the matter.

The PDP said the earnest expectation of Nigerians and lovers of democracy across the world is that the Supreme Court will use this case to firmly validate the maxim that the Judiciary is the last hope of the common man.

“Nigerians are therefore optimistic in hoping that the Supreme Court will dispense substantial Justice according to law and fact in the Appeal,” the party said.

PoliticsGuber Poll: ‘Our Candidate Will Change The Fortunes Of Kogi’ – Action Alliance by Thonyb(op): 6:05pm On Oct 21, 2023
The Acting Chairman of Action Alliance (AA), Kogi State chapter, Fred Ambo, says the party’s governorship candidate, Olayinka Braimoh, has what it takes to turn the fortunes of the state around.

Addressing a press briefing in Lokoja on Saturday, the party chairman said Braimoh stands out among other candidates in the Kogi governorship race with his clear vision for the state and actionable plans to develop Kogi.

Ambo said having moved round most wards in Kogi State, he is confident that Braimoh will emerge victorious on November 11.

“Aside being the most accessible among the governorship candidates, Braimoh is the brightest among the pack.

“Our governorship candidate has engaged people in the nooks and crannies of the state, touring most wards across the 21 local government areas in Kogi state.

“He has presented a very clear and detailed vision for the state as encapsulated in his STAT Agenda. His plans to create and distribute wealth remains the most practical approach to the challenges bedeviling Kogi State,” he said.

He, however, urged the general public to ignore the former chairman of Action Alliance in the state, Musa Ukwenya, who, according to him, is trying to defraud unsuspecting politicians that he still leads the party in Kogi.

He explained that Ukwenya ceased to be state chairman of the party after the Supreme Court judgement that affirmed the current national leadership of the party.

Ambo said his coming on board was necessitated by the dismissal of the suit by Kenneth Udeze challenging Adekunle Rufai Omoaje, the National Chairman of Action Alliance.

“Musa Ukwenya belonged to the Udeze faction and had since ceased to be chairman of the party in Kogi State. After series of legal battles, the Supreme Court laid the problem to rest by recognising Omoaje as the authentic chairman of the party. The Omoaje-led national leadership is the one recognised by INEC.

“We, the executives and members of Action Alliance, want to make it categorically clear that the party is intact and in support of the assignment of Otunba Olayinka Braimoh for the state.

“Without mincing words, AA in Kogi remains one house and body determined to win this election. We urge all our members not to be distracted by the activities of the former chairman, Musa Ukwenya, who has been going about to disparage our movement for a better Kogi State,” he said.

He urged other members not to be distracted but remain focused on winning the November governorship election.

Responding to questions from newsmen, Ambo said the AA governorship candidate is in the race to win and will not step down for another candidate as been speculated in some quarters.

“Rather, we expect candidates to step down for Olayinka Braimoh before November 11. He is stepping up, and won’t step down for anyone.”

PoliticsPDP Disowns Wabara For Allegedly Endorsing Otti For Second Term by Thonyb(op): 8:47am On Oct 18, 2023
Abia State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has said that its attention has been drawn to a statement credited to the former Senate President, Senator Adolphus Wabara, where he reportedly endorsed Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, for a second term.

The Party in a statement signed by its Vice Chairman, Abia North, Abraham Amah, said that Wabara, who is the acting Board of Trustee Chairman, BoT of PDP, made the endorsement in his reaction to the recent flag off of reconstruction of Aba-Port-Harcourt road, by Governor Otti.

According to the statement, Wabara described the Abia governor as a reliable and true man of honour who is also a master strategist that deserved a second term in office as Abia governor.

However, Abia PDP in the statement, said the former Senate President did not speak the party’s mind, but only spoke for himself.

He said, “The Abia PDP dissociates itself with the said statement which presents Senator Wabara as someone who has either lost touch with the reality, is not at home with the undercurrents of Abia politics or one who probably spoke under the influence of some elements.

“While we recognize his entitlement to his personal opinions on issues relating to governance in Abia State and Nigeria, the Abia PDP is constrained to warn that such a highly placed official of the PDP who failed to deliver his unit for the Party during the last election should be mindful of his conduct and statements in the public, especially if the person is not well versed on the issue at core.

“The Party has appropriate channels of communication which must not be breached by any officer, no matter how highly placed.”

Concerning the second flag off of the Port-Harcourt road project, the Abia PDP said that Senator Wabara dabbled into the matter without knowing the history and facts about the road project.

The opposition party further insisted that the former administration in Abia State under Okezie Ikpeazu should share the credit for the project as it did some drainages on the road.

PoliticsOgun Will Create Ministries Of Energy, Mineral Resources, ICT, Etc - Abiodun by Thonyb(op): 6:42am On Oct 18, 2023
The Ogun State Government is set to establish the Ministries of Mineral Resources, Information Communication Technology (ICT) and Digital Economy and Energy.

This was disclosed by Governor Dapo Abiodun during a meeting with Permanent Secretaries held at the Executive Chambers of the Governor’s Office, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

Prince Abiodun also disclosed that the Ministry of Youths would be separated from the Ministry of Sports in preparation for the setting up of the Ogun State Sports Commission.

Abiodun noted that the establishment of the new ministries would avail his administration the opportunity to focus more on the development of those critical sectors.

He said that it is imperative to have full fledged ministerial status for those sectors for the administration to achieve the objectives set forth in those areas.

The governor noted that the prospect of Ogun becoming an oil producing state during his tenure is higher, adding that attention is also being paid to electricity generation following the unbundling of that sector.

On the idea behind the Ministry of Information Communication Technology (ICT) and Digital Economy, Prince Abiodun described Ogun as the education capital of Nigeria, with many youths in the state being ICT savvy.

The new Ministry, he said, will take care of the needs of the youths in the state on terms of employment.

He spoke further: “I had also mentioned in the course of the swearing-in of the commissioners that we are establishing new ministries.

“We intend to establish about three or four new ministries; the Ministries of Mineral Resources; Information Communication Technology (ICT) and Digital Economy and we are creating the Ministry of Youths.

“We are removing the Ministry of Sports from the Ministry of Youths because we want to set up the Ogun State Sports Commission. We are also considering setting up the Ministry of Energy.

“The reasons why we decided to set up this new ministries is because those areas are now going to be areas of focus for us and we believe that for us to achieve the objectives that we are setting forth in those areas, it is important for them to become full fledged ministries and have all the required administrative support that will allow them to achieve their objectives.”

Governor Abiodun commended the permanent secretaries and civil servants in the state for their prayers and support, especially after the Tribunal judgement that was in his favour.

Abiodun called for synergy between political appointees and civil servants, adding that it is important to work together for the success of the administration.

According to him, civil servants and political appointees must not been seen to be competing, but complementing each other, adding that such collaboration can only be in the interest of the state.

He added: “It is important for the success of our administration for all of us to work together. There must be cooperation between civil servants and the appointees; commissioners, special advisers and so on because we all have one goal is the overall wellbeing and welfare of the administration and the good people of Ogun State.”
