A newborn has been rescued from a pit toilet in Otuocha, Anambra East Local Government Area of the State three days after birth. According to a report posted on the Facebook page of Anambra State Ministry of Women and Social Welfare, the incident happened on Sunday. The mother of the male child, Nwaedoka Chidinma, a 20-year-old girl from Izzi, Ebonyi State, was said to have deliberately carried out the act. Esther Omesi, a farmer and friend to Chidinma, alerted relevant authorities about the incident. Omesi said she was staying at Chidinma’s place at the time it happened. According to her, Chidinma started acting suspiciously on Sunday after she had notified her (Omesi) that she was having stomach upset and then went to the pit to ease herself. She narrated that Chidimma took time and when she came out, there was dripping of blood which made her call a nurse that inspected her and revealed that the baby was gone. Omesi said that she thought that Chidinma had a stillbirth, which is why she encouraged her to travel home to her parents and notify them of the development. Revealing further on how it happened, Omesi said that they heard a baby’s cry on Tuesday morning and quickly used a ladder to rescue the newborn. Reacting to the incident, the Honourable Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Ify Obinabo, was shocked when both the mother and child were brought to her office. Turning to Chidinma, she said: “Why would you, after you have passed through pregnancy, given birth and decided to put the baby in the toilet? Why? Since Sunday? Why are you this wicked?” The commissioner quickly directed that the newborn should be taken to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu Teaching Hospital, Amaku, in Awka for treatment and later called for the arrest of the culprit. Obinabo decried the rate at which young girls now commit crime and stated that the young mother won’t go unpunished. She further noted that the Governor of Anambra State, Prof Charles Chukwuma Soludo has zero tolerance for such inhumane and dastardly acts and assured of seeing to the end of the case. https://.ng/2023/08/30/newborn-rescued-from-pit-toilet-after-three-days-in-anambra/

The staff of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Chima Anolue, who was brutally murdered by a househelp on July 15, has been buried. His remains were buried last Tuesday in Igbo Ukwu community, Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State. His burial attracted mourners from the university community, who described the deceased as a cool-headed fellow. The 35-year-old was attacked with a pestle after an argument with his househelp, Ifesinachi, an indigene of Ebonyi State who was brought in by his parents to assist with domestic chores. The mother of the deceased, Dr Ifeyinwa Anolue, who is the secretary of the College of Postgraduate Studies, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, provided an insight into the July 15 tragedy. She said: “It was not the first time the househelp had done something wrong, but we always forgave him. He was once apprehended for stealing rods and was beaten by security guards, but we intervened. “He had also stolen from our house, but he wrote an undertaking never to do so and begged us. My son Chima (the deceased) once urged us to send the boy away before he got us into trouble.” Speaking about what happened on the fateful day, Dr Anolue said: “We went for burial on Thursday. Then on Friday night, I got a call from my second son saying there was a crisis. He asked us to start praying, as the news he got from Awka was that Chima was in critical condition and had been rushed to the hospital. “It turned out my son was attacked and killed by our househelp. I later visited the police station and requested to see Ifesi (the suspect) to know why he killed my son. He said Chima told him to boil rice for him and then slapped him. I told him it was a lie. Chima cannot tell him to boil rice. He has never cooked for Chima since he came into our house. Chima can only send him to buy Coca-Cola across the street on rare occasions. My only sadness was that my son died hungry. The rice he was boiling before he was killed was never touched.” https://.ng/2023/08/23/unizik-staff-killed-by-househelp-buried-amidst-tears-lamentations/

The Katsina State Government has disclosed that it received N2 billion from the federal government’s palliative programme and not the N5 billion being alleged for procurement of grains and onward distribution to residents in the state. The State Commissioner of Information, Culture and Home Affairs, Mr Bala Salisu-Zango, at a press briefing on Wednesday, said the disbursed amount had already been used to procure and was disbursed to further bring succour to the suffering masses in the state. Zango noted that the federal government’s initial plan was to allocate N5 billion for the acquisition of rice, maize, and fertiliser for distribution to various states. However, following consultations with state governors, it was collectively decided that the funds should be directed straight to the states to expedite the procurement process and invigorate local economies. This led to the decision to provide the funds incrementally to states, earmarked specifically for rice and maize procurement. He also disclosed that the Central Bank of Nigeria was directed to release the funds to the states as a soft loan, which the federal government will repay 52 per cent and states 48 per cent over a period of 12 months. According to Zango, the state government, under the Direction of Governor Dikko Radda, has already utilised the N2 billion received and purchased 40,000 bags of rice for onward distribution in each of the state’s polling units. This, the Katsina Information Commissioner said, is in addition to the earlier directive Governor Radda gave to all local government councils in the state to procure and distribute maize to citizens free of charge; which has been carried out already. Zango further urged the citizens to remain calm, assuring that once the next tranche of funds is received from the federal government, the state government will procure maize and distribute accordingly. https://.ng/2023/08/24/we-didnt-receive-n5bn-as-palliative-from-fg-katsina-govt/

Please this post is supposed to be on the "crime" category but i don't know if nairaland bot has banned me from posting on it, Mynd44, Lalasticlala, Seun etc The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has launched a manhunt for a Lekki Lagos-based notorious drug dealer, Sowunmi Ayodeji Kayode. This was announced in a statement issued on Wednesday by Femi Babafemi, the Director, Media and Advocacy, NDLEA Headquarters, Abuja. According to the statement, Kayode, who is now on the run, crushed an NDLEA officer with his luxury vehicle in his bid to escape arrest when operatives were on a search of his house last weekend. Recall that NDLEA officers had last Friday stormed the residence of the wanted drug dealer located at 2/3 Adetola Ayeni close, Lekki, Lagos, for a search and possible arrest following credible intelligence that he was dealing in illicit drugs. But Kayode was not in the house when the anti-narcotics officers got into his compound. The drug dealer, however, returned while a search of his apartment was ongoing. In a dramatic twist, as soon as he drove into the premises and sighted NDLEA officers, he engaged his car in reverse gear, knocked down one of the officers and pulled down his gate before plunging the vehicle into the fence of the opposite compound. The force of his car’s speed also pulled down the concrete wall of his neighbour’s compound and from there he dived out of the vehicle to escape. https://.ng/2023/08/23/ndlea-launches-manhunt-for-lekki-notorious-drug-dealer-kayode/

B Okuaru said since the states are satisfied with the operations of the NSIA, the local government cannot claim not to be aware of projects being carried out by the agency. He was responding to the presentation of the National President of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria, Mr Kolade David Alabi that the local government councils were not aware of the activities of the NSIA. He said by the composition of the NSIA, the Federal Government and the FACT has about 49.96 percent of the investment while the 36 states and their local government control about 54 percent, saying “the states and local government are the real owners only NSIA because we are the majority shareholders.” He disclosed that in 2022, the governors requested a presentation on the operations of the NSIA from the management, adding that “we were satisfied with the presentation and what they are doing. “If you look at the constitution, the country is runned as a federal system. We have only two federation units- the Federal and State government. “The local government is not a federating unit, but an appendage of the states, even though it is recognised in the Constitution as a third tier of government. That is why you have a states and local government joint accounts. They don’t get money directly from the Federations Account.. “Every single project executed by the NSIA is located in a local government and so, they are beneficiaries of the NSIA projects and we are satisfied with what they have been doing”. He acknowledged the NSIA investment in health and education, he said the health facilities being invested in by the agency were health facilities belong to the states, while those of the local government have joy benefited. Chairman of the committee, Hon. Ademorin Kuye said the aim of the investigation was to ensure that the statutory provisions of the law establishing the agency was adhered to.
