CrimeNewborn Rescued From Pit Toilet After Three Days In Anambra by Thonyb(op): 9:12am On Aug 30, 2023
A newborn has been rescued from a pit toilet in Otuocha, Anambra East Local Government Area of the State three days after birth.

According to a report posted on the Facebook page of Anambra State Ministry of Women and Social Welfare, the incident happened on Sunday.

The mother of the male child, Nwaedoka Chidinma, a 20-year-old girl from Izzi, Ebonyi State, was said to have deliberately carried out the act.

Esther Omesi, a farmer and friend to Chidinma, alerted relevant authorities about the incident.

Omesi said she was staying at Chidinma’s place at the time it happened.

According to her, Chidinma started acting suspiciously on Sunday after she had notified her (Omesi) that she was having stomach upset and then went to the pit to ease herself.

She narrated that Chidimma took time and when she came out, there was dripping of blood which made her call a nurse that inspected her and revealed that the baby was gone.

Omesi said that she thought that Chidinma had a stillbirth, which is why she encouraged her to travel home to her parents and notify them of the development.

Revealing further on how it happened, Omesi said that they heard a baby’s cry on Tuesday morning and quickly used a ladder to rescue the newborn.

Reacting to the incident, the Honourable Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Ify Obinabo, was shocked when both the mother and child were brought to her office.

Turning to Chidinma, she said: “Why would you, after you have passed through pregnancy, given birth and decided to put the baby in the toilet? Why? Since Sunday? Why are you this wicked?”

The commissioner quickly directed that the newborn should be taken to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu Teaching Hospital, Amaku, in Awka for treatment and later called for the arrest of the culprit.

Obinabo decried the rate at which young girls now commit crime and stated that the young mother won’t go unpunished.

She further noted that the Governor of Anambra State, Prof Charles Chukwuma Soludo has zero tolerance for such inhumane and dastardly acts and assured of seeing to the end of the case.

The staff of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Chima Anolue, who was brutally murdered by a househelp on July 15, has been buried.

His remains were buried last Tuesday in Igbo Ukwu community, Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State. His burial attracted mourners from the university community, who described the deceased as a cool-headed fellow.

The 35-year-old was attacked with a pestle after an argument with his househelp, Ifesinachi, an indigene of Ebonyi State who was brought in by his parents to assist with domestic chores.

The mother of the deceased, Dr Ifeyinwa Anolue, who is the secretary of the College of Postgraduate Studies, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, provided an insight into the July 15 tragedy.

She said: “It was not the first time the househelp had done something wrong, but we always forgave him. He was once apprehended for stealing rods and was beaten by security guards, but we intervened.

“He had also stolen from our house, but he wrote an undertaking never to do so and begged us. My son Chima (the deceased) once urged us to send the boy away before he got us into trouble.”

Speaking about what happened on the fateful day, Dr Anolue said: “We went for burial on Thursday. Then on Friday night, I got a call from my second son saying there was a crisis. He asked us to start praying, as the news he got from Awka was that Chima was in critical condition and had been rushed to the hospital.

“It turned out my son was attacked and killed by our househelp. I later visited the police station and requested to see Ifesi (the suspect) to know why he killed my son. He said Chima told him to boil rice for him and then slapped him. I told him it was a lie. Chima cannot tell him to boil rice. He has never cooked for Chima since he came into our house. Chima can only send him to buy Coca-Cola across the street on rare occasions. My only sadness was that my son died hungry. The rice he was boiling before he was killed was never touched.”

PoliticsWe Didn’t Receive N5bn As Palliative From FG – Katsina Govt by Thonyb(op): 2:15am On Aug 24, 2023
The Katsina State Government has disclosed that it received N2 billion from the federal government’s palliative programme and not the N5 billion being alleged for procurement of grains and onward distribution to residents in the state.

The State Commissioner of Information, Culture and Home Affairs, Mr Bala Salisu-Zango, at a press briefing on Wednesday, said the disbursed amount had already been used to procure and was disbursed to further bring succour to the suffering masses in the state.

Zango noted that the federal government’s initial plan was to allocate N5 billion for the acquisition of rice, maize, and fertiliser for distribution to various states.

However, following consultations with state governors, it was collectively decided that the funds should be directed straight to the states to expedite the procurement process and invigorate local economies.

This led to the decision to provide the funds incrementally to states, earmarked specifically for rice and maize procurement.

He also disclosed that the Central Bank of Nigeria was directed to release the funds to the states as a soft loan, which the federal government will repay 52 per cent and states 48 per cent over a period of 12 months.

According to Zango, the state government, under the Direction of Governor Dikko Radda, has already utilised the N2 billion received and purchased 40,000 bags of rice for onward distribution in each of the state’s polling units.

This, the Katsina Information Commissioner said, is in addition to the earlier directive Governor Radda gave to all local government councils in the state to procure and distribute maize to citizens free of charge; which has been carried out already.

Zango further urged the citizens to remain calm, assuring that once the next tranche of funds is received from the federal government, the state government will procure maize and distribute accordingly.

This was announced in a statement issued on Wednesday by Femi Babafemi, the Director, Media and Advocacy, NDLEA Headquarters, Abuja.

According to the statement, Kayode, who is now on the run, crushed an NDLEA officer with his luxury vehicle in his bid to escape arrest when operatives were on a search of his house last weekend.

A legal practitioner, Mr Maxwell Opara, has filed a defamatory suit seeking N10 billion in damages against Twitter and the Department of State Services (DSS).

In the writ of summons marked: FCT/HC/CV/7186/23 and filed at the FCT High Court by Malachy Nwaekpe, Opara listed Twitter Nigeria Limited and Director-General (DG) of State Security Service (also known as DSS) as 1st and 2nd defendants.

The State Security Service and the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice are listed as 3rd and 4th defendants respectively in the suit dated Aug. 11 and filed Aug. 14.

The lawyer filed the suit against the allegation that Twitter, now known as X, “negligently allowed the defamatory, ethnic profiling and racist comments” against him by the DSS under the leadership of its director-general on the security agency’s platform on July 18 for more than 96 hours.

Opara, who alleged that the post was caused to be published and made viral to millions of readers, described the message as “false, defamatory, demeaning, disparaging and harmful.”

He, therefore, sought eight reliefs which include “an order of this honourable court directing the 2nd and 3rd defendants (DG and DSS), jointly and severally, to issue a letter of apology on the 1st defendant’s platform twitter and a daily newspaper widely read across the federation of Nigeria.”

He sought an order of court directing the defendants to, jointly and severally, pay to the claimant the sum of N10 billion as general damages for the various defamatory, demeaning, disparaging and harmful words of the 3rd defendant under the leadership of the 2nd defendant which words were published and caused to be made viral by the 1st defendant in its twitter platform.

“An award of 10 per cent post judgment interest per annum on the entire judgment sum from the date of judgment till same is fully liquidated,” he added.

The matter was yet to be assigned to a judgment at the time of the report.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that in the tweet, the DSS was quoted as having written the following, “Charge and bail, overzealous uninformed IPOB/ESN lawyer Maxwell Okpara mobilises other like minded lawyers against DGSS.

“Futile Efforts. Well, Nigerians, beware! This is in bad faith. Transferred aggression.

“A Biafran republic agitator and outlawed IPOB counsel defending the suspended CBN governor.

“Is IPOB defending one of theirs? What a contradiction, what’s the connection, may Maxwell be properly educated on points of law, please.”

The Committee set up by Imo State Government for the recovery of land belonging to Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education (AIFCE), yesterday, indicted former governor Rochas Okorocha for using brute force to disposses the college of its land.

The report which was signed by the Chairman,Prof Vitalis Orikeze Ajumbe and the secretary, B F Anyanwu, regretted that Okorocha,as governor, used brute force including the military and hoodlums to snatch the land from the College after which he allocated or sold same to his top associates.

Those who benefited from the bazaar and have been similarly asked to vacate the land included two of Okorocha”s in laws, Dr Uzoma Anwuka and Kingsley Uju.

Apart from Okorocha”s inlaws , a former speaker, Chief Acho Ihim, Charles Orie, Prince Charles Amadi and Ugochukwu Hillary also benefited from the illegal acquisition.

The Committee regretted that Okorocha ordered the demolition of 101 buildings belonging to staff of the college and thereafter confiscated their property.

It therefore urged the Imo State Executive Council” to direct the recovery of all the lands belonging to AIFCE, which are now illegally in the hands of individuals and institutions.”

It further asked the state government to ensure the recovery of the land within six months and thereafter issue a certificate of occupancy to the college.

“AIFCE should take full possession of the vacated land and property immediately upon recovery while the Commissioner for Lands and OCDA should recover the land within six months”, the committee recommended.

It further recommended that AIFCE should pay the agreed compensation to Orji indigenes who are the original owners of the land while the Army should vacate the shanties they erected in the land and finally move to Obinze.

Responding, Governor Uzodimma thanked the committee for doing a thorough job and promised that the state government would take all necessary steps in accord with due process to implement the committee’s recommendations.

CrimeCustoms Intercepts 1,245 Live Cartridges Concealed In Bags Of Rice In Ogun State by Thonyb(op): 8:01pm On Aug 14, 2023
The Nigerian Customs Service (NCS), Ogun Area 1 Command, has intercepted no fewer than 1,245 live cartridges concealed in some bags of rice.

The seizure was made at Tobolo community near Ijoun, in Yewa North Local Government Area of Ogun State.

The Area Controller, Bamidele Makinde, made this known during a press conference held in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, on Monday

Makinde told newsmen that the ammunition was loaded with 203 bags of foreign rice and abandoned in a bush path at Tobolo junction, near an exit point to the neighbouring Benin Republic.

According to him, the cartridges, 70mm (2¾), were of Lion, Trust, Supreme and Redstar brands.

The customs boss noted that the ammunition was intercepted on Saturday following intelligence gathered by the command on the planned smuggling of the prohibited items into Nigeria from Benin Republic.

He informed that the Roving B Team of the command intercepted five vehicles conveying the prohibited items.

The Area Controller disclosed that the drivers who were suspected to have been hinted at the movement of the operatives, escaped through the bush path and evaded arrest.

“During an examination of the seized vehicles and the item, about 1,245 rounds of 70mm ((2¾)) ammunition of Lion, Trust, Supreme and Redstar branded cartridges were found to have been ingeniously concealed in 20 bags of the intercepted foreign rice.

“While considering the potential danger of ammunition of such magnitude if successfully smuggled in, we redouble our efforts to ensure they do not find their way into the country. It is a threat to the safety of the border communities and national security. We are committed to ensuring maximum security of our border lines with all sense of patriotism.”

Makinde put the duty payable on the seized ammunition and rice at N17,638,145.

He said the items have been deposited for safekeeping, pending necessary action, adding that an “investigation is ongoing to unravel the cartel responsible for the attempted smuggling of the items for arrest and prosecution,” Makinde said.

He said the development is coming barely a week after a marching order was given to the command by the Acting Comptroller-General, Bashir Adeniyi, during his working visit to Ogun the week before.
