The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu has urged his loyalists to be vigilant ahead of the December 15 Supreme Court judgment regarding his incarceration. Kanu urged his followers to be watchful against any plot by those he referred to as ‘fifth columnists’ to “rock the boat” before the judgment. According to his Special Counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, Kanu passed the message across to his followers during a meeting with his legal team at the Abuja facility of the Department of State Services, DSS, on Tuesday. Recall that in June 2021, Kanu was rearrested in Kenya and subjected to extraordinary rendition. Upon his return to Nigeria, the Federal Government had arraigned Kanu on a four-count pre-rendition charge. The former Attorney-General of Nigeria, Abubakar Malami, withdrew all but one of the four counts in the charge and replaced them with 14-count charge, bordering on terrorism and membership of a proscribed organization. In the course of time, the Federal High Court, pursuant to applications made, reduced the charges to seven-counts, which were later quashed by the Court of Appeal. Despite being discharged and acquitted, the Nigerian Government has refused to set Kanu free. In a post on his X handle on Tuesday, Ejimakor wrote, “UPDATE: I just exited today’s visitation with Onyendu #MNK in the company of my colleague, Barr Mandela. “He directed that, as we count down to Dec 15, the loyal & faithful should be vigilant to any plot by the Fifth Columnists to ‘rock the boat’ & pin the blame on our people.” https://.ng/2023/12/05/be-vigilant-nnamdi-kanu-tells-followers-ahead-dec-15-supreme-court-judgement/

The All Progressives Congress,APC, and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Bayelsa State on Monday traded words over an alleged plot by Governor Douye Diri to frame Chief Timipre Sylva with corrupt charges using the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC. Sylva was the candidate of the APC in the just concluded governorship poll in Bayelsa State. The APC, in a statement sent to .ng through its State Publicity Secretary, Mr. Doifie Buokoribo, said Diri intend to make Sylva look guilty of crimes he did not commit in order to distract him from effectively pursuing his petition at the state governorship election tribunal. Parts of the statement said, “We are aware of Senator Diri’s devious activities at the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission,EFCC, aimed at sponsoring invented petitions against Sylva, and the pressure he is mounting on officials of the Commission to initiate arrest and prosecution against him on trumped up charges, particularly, bordering on his tour of duty as Minister of State for Petroleum Resources. “We have it on good authority that Governor Diri has instigated officials of EFCC on a fishing expedition to try to cobble some flimsy and imaginary charges together against Sylva in order to arrest him. This is all in a bid to distract the APC candidate, and hinder effective pursuit of his petition at the State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal. “Senator Diri knows full well that he did not win the November 11 governorship poll; he knows without a doubt that he is holding a stolen mandate that would soon revert to the rightful owner. That is why despite his alleged victory, there is hardly any celebration. Diri and his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), are simply jittery, knowing there is nothing to celebrate. “APC would like to use this medium to warn Diri and PDP to desist from their conspiratorial activities against Sylva at the EFCC. “We also wish to advise the EFCC to resist any temptation to get entangled in the political chicanery of the sinking governor and his party.” But the PDP, in a reaction through the State Publicity Secretary, Ebiye Ogoli, called on the APC to leave Diri out of Sylva’s travails. According to the PDP, the allegation by the APC was an attempt to hoodwink gullible Bayelsans. “The attention of the Bayelsa State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party,PDP, has been drawn to a malicious publication to the effect that the State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, and our party were engaging in a clandestine plot to frame up corruption allegations against the defeated All Progressives Congress,APC, governorship candidate, Chief Timipre Sylva, before the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission,EFCC. “Chief Timpre Sylva, as a bad loser, has refused to acknowledge and accept the outcome of the November 11 governorship election for what it is – a free, fair and transparent poll. “The election was widely adjudged by various local and international observers as one of the cleanest in recent times conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission, in which incumbent Governor Douye Diri was re-elected via a landslide,” parts of the PDP statement said. https://.ng/2023/12/04/bayelsa-guber-apc-pdp-bicker-over-alleged-plot-to-frame-sylva-with-corrupt-charges/

The Federal Government announced on Thursday that a new minimum wage regime will take effect on April 1, 2024. Idris Mohammed, Minister of Information and National Orientation, stated in an interview with newsmen in Abuja that the present N30,000 minimum wage would expire at the end of March 2024. According to the analysis of the 2024-2026 Fiscal Framework budgets, the Federal Government will spend N24.66 trillion on salaries in 2024, 2025, and 2026. Following President Bola Tinubu’s removal of fuel subsidy on May 29, 2023, the Federal Government decided to provide N35,000 to each of its workers to mitigate the consequences of the subsidy removal. However, organized labour stated that the N35,000 salary award was merely a stopgap solution, adding that the minimum wage should be reconsidered in 2024. After months of discussions, the Federal Government’s team and the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council reached an agreement on the implementation of the N30,00 minimum wage on October 18, 2019. However, trade unions stated on Thursday that they had begun negotiations with the Federal Government, stressing that the country’s labour legislation requires that the minimum wage be reviewed every five years. https://.ng/2023/12/01/new-wage-commences-in-april-as-fg-approves-n24tn-for-salaries/

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike has presented a N61,553,778,259 billion 2023 statutory supplementary budget proposal for the FCT before the Senate and House of Representatives Committees of the National Assembly. Making the presentation before the Senate and House of Representatives Committees in Abuja on Wednesday, the FCT Minister disclosed that the supplementary budget is to accommodate additional cash inflows to the FCT to ensure the completion of prioritized projects and programmes of the administration. The minister explained that the additional cash inflows comprise of receipts of N25.8 billion Paris Club Refund, N28.6 PAYE Tax liabilities from federal agencies, N5 billion Special intervention funds (palliatives) from the Federal Government, Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) of N9.4 billion and N5 billion Infrastructure Support Fund. Of the N61.55 billion proposed sum, N12.9 billion is for overhead costs, while N48.6 billion is earmarked for capital expenditure. Some of the capital projects that will benefit from the supplementary budget include the resurfacing of existing roads and remedial works phase I and II, completion of roads B6, B12 & Circle Road in the Abuja Central Area, Full Scope Development of Arterial Road N20 from Northern Parkway to Outer Northern Expressway (ONEX) and Construction of Southern Parkway from Christian Centre (S8/9) to Ring Road I (RRI). Other projects encompass the provision of Engineering Infrastructure to Wuye District, Access Road to Kabusa Garden Estate, Mass Transit Buses/Rehabilitation of existing and Serviceable, Rehabilitation of National Mosque and National Christian Centre, Design and Construction of the Vice President’s residence, among others. The minister equally disclosed that virtually all the contractors working for the FCT Administration had left the project sites prior to the coming of the current FCT Administration due to the non-payment of contractual obligations by the FCTA. He said FCT Administration required the consent of the National Assembly via appropriation in order to utilize the needed funds to get the contractors back to the various sites adding that the budgeted funds would be attached to some of the ongoing projects to ensure their completion before May next year. He informed that the projects are part of the presidential deliverables of which the FCT Administration is committed to completing before the celebration of one year in office of the President by May 2024. The FCT Minister further disclosed that substantial funds from the supplementary budget has been earmarked for extensive advertisements in the national newspapers aimed at creating enough awareness in its bid to enforce the payment of ground rent and the proposed recertification of Certificates of Occupancy These actions, the Minister said, will help to boost the IGR of the FCT and improve the security features of the FCT land title documents as well as checkmate fraud. The Minister also disclosed that the administration will engage the services of senior advocates of Nigeria to efficiently defend the FCTA in the numerous litigations leveled against it which he said numbered about 800. He further clarified that the FCT 2023 supplementary budget differs from the national supplementary budget presented by the President, where the sum of N100 billion was allocated to the FCT to carry out national projects like the metro line and some other road projects. Wike, therefore, called on the National Assembly to give expeditious approval to the supplementary budget, promising that the FCT will witness the commissioning of many projects next year. https://.ng/2023/11/30/fct-wike-presents-n61-5-billion-2023-supplementary-budget-to-nass/

There is no respite in sight for university workers under the umbrella of Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, who are agitating for the release of their withheld salaries resulting from last year’s industrial action. .ng reports that the union last week lost its suit against the federal government over the salaries withheld for the period they were on strike in 2022. The development came after the National Industrial Court, NIC, dismissed the case filed by ASUU against the Minister of Labour and Employment and the Accountant General of the Federation. ASUU was on strike which lasted for eight months in 2022 over issues revolving around revitalisation of public universities and a review of lecturers’ salaries and allowances, among other matters. After several meetings and efforts to resolve the strike ended inconclusively, the federal government headed to the National Industrial Court to challenge the union’s action. In its ruling, the industrial court granted the federal government’s application for an interlocutory injunction to restrain ASUU from continuing with the strike pending the determination of the substantive suit. However, early in November last year, when they returned to work, the members of the union were bewildered following the payment of half salaries for only 18 working days in October to its members by the federal government. The development followed the federal government’s insistence on implementing the ‘No Work, No Pay’ policy when the university workers were away from their duty posts. The then Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, had said that the lecturers were paid in pro rata for the number of days they worked, counting from the day that they suspended their industrial action. The National Industrial Court further upheld the no work, no pay rule when it ruled in the suit filed by the federal government against the ASUU. The union had demanded salaries of members from February 14 to October 7, 2022, when the strike was called off. But according to the court, it was within the right of the federal government to withhold salaries of workers who embark on industrial action. In June this year, ASUU filed a separate lawsuit against the federal government over what it described as discriminatory, unfair and illegal treatment of its members. The suit was filed by Femi Falana, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, on behalf of ASUU. The union asked the court to determine whether having paid the salaries of members of the Joint Staff Union, National Association of Resident Doctors and lecturers in the Medical Facilities/Medical and Dental Academic of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Nnewi Campus, Anambra State during the period of industrial actions, the decision of the defendants to withhold the salaries of the members of the claimant from February to October 2022 was not discriminatory and illegal. The union also wanted the court to determine “whether the members of ASUU were not entitled to payment of their salaries for the months of February to October 2022, of which their members were on strike. While ruling on the matter last week, the President of the NIC, Hon. Justice Benedict Kanyip, dismissed the case on the basis that it was an abuse of court process, frivolous and vexatious. Justice Kanyip also awarded the sum of five hundred thousand Naira (N500,000) payable by ASUU to the Attorney-General of the Federation within 30 days. “This stance is further reinforced when the supporting affidavit of the instant suit is considered. In paragraphs 6 to 12 and 15 of the affidavit in support of the instant suit, the Claimant recounted what constitutes the work of a lecturer, how the strike it embarked upon does not abrogate the responsibilities of its members as lecturers, how, despite that the defendants refused to pay its members their salaries for the period of the strike, how the strike continued thereby, how the teaching job component of their job was only restored upon the orders of this Court and the Court of Appeal, etc. These were matters ASUU ought to have canvassed in Suit No. NICN/ABJ/270/2022 if they had filed their defence processes. But ASUU ‘strategically’ chose not to. “ASUU accordingly has itself to blame for all these ‘strategic’ blunders. It cannot, by the instant suit, re-litigate a suit it deliberately refused to file a defence to. To do so would be re-litigation through the backdoor. I so hold,” the court ruled. Recall that before the court judgement, President Bola Tinubu had last month approved the partial waiver of the “No Work, No Pay” order against ASUU members. According to the presidential spokesman, Ajuri Ngelale, Tinubu approved the grant of the waiver with a mandatory requirement that the Federal Ministry of Education and the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment must secure a Document of Understanding establishing that the exceptional waiver granted by the President would be the last one to be granted to ASUU and all other education sector unions. Ajuri said the waiver would allow for the previously striking members of ASUU to receive four months of salary accruals out of the eight months of salary which was withheld during the eight-month industrial action undertaken by the union. He said Tinubu invoked the Principle of the Presidential Prerogative of Mercy, seeking to “mitigate the difficulties being felt during the implementation of key economic reforms in the country, as well as his recognition of the faithful implementation of terms which were agreed upon during the deliberations between ASUU and the Federal Government of Nigeria”. Findings by .ng indicated that the union was not amenable to the condition attached to its members receiving the four months of salary accruals out of the eight months of salary. A top official of the union told newsmen that signing the agreement would amount to ‘slavery.’ He said the union would never relinquish its rights because of the withheld salaries. Speaking to newsmen about the matter, the ASUU UNN branch chairman, Comrade Nobert Oyibo Eze said the government was yet to reach out to the union concerning the eight months’ backlog of salaries – a fallout from last year’s strike. He also said that the national body of ASUU has not come out with any statement on the recent court pronouncement on the matter. Eze said that the leaders must consider the interest of the people for things to work well in the country. He further warned that ‘‘it is going to be worse for this country if the courts are no longer doing what is proper’’. He said, ‘‘As far as the idea of four months salary and signing documents are concerned, ASUU has not received any official communication from the government. And the truth of the matter is that we have done the work. And you cannot deny us our salaries after we have done the work. ‘‘You see, the problem with the Nigerian system is that we have a political class that is hypocritical, that is self-centred and extremely wicked. “Why would they want to answer a doctor and a professor and claim they have attended university, which they did not? They claim all sorts of titles from the educational sector, they want to be doctor, professor; they want to claim they have the degrees. So, education is good to them but they cannot fund it in this country. What exactly is the government of this country doing? “Recently, it was reported all over the place about the N160 million they appropriated to each one of the members of the National Assembly to buy bulletproof vehicles. So, they are the only ones to be secured. ‘‘The major salary they are paying the workers, they cannot pay it. Whenever it comes to their own, there would be money. “I read somewhere two days ago about how N104 billion was sandwiched, smuggled into the budget as an end of the year parting gift, where a senator will take N300 million and a member of the House will take N200 million. “Whenever it comes to their own needs, there would be money. But when it comes to taking care of the workers who generate this money, they will be talking about empty treasury. Are they talking to kids? ‘‘President Tinubu said during his campaign that if he becomes the president of this country, he will make sure that he stops strikes in the university by ensuring that whatever the universities need to be functional that he provides them. “Since he took over as the President, has he called the members of the union to dialogue? Why do we have this type of system where the people, the masses who are working are being crushed? “Today, we are buying a litre of fuel at N700, how much is our salary? A professor’s salary cannot feed him summarily for two weeks. ‘‘I want to tell them that if they want things to work in this country, they must consider the people. If all of us die, who are they going to govern? “Why is it that our political class is self-centred? Other governments are pumping money into the system to have a state-of-art-university. Here in Nigeria, they are busy proliferating universities, which they don’t fund. The health sector is sick. “I’m saying, unless they pay those salaries, things will not work well in the universities. And they are even using the eight months salaries, which we have worked for as a cover because the major issues why we went on strike, nobody talks about it anymore. “We went on strike because our take-home-package can no longer take us home. This salary we are receiving today, they were negotiated and effected in 2009. What is the exchange rate now compared to 2009? “What is a professor in Nigeria earning when you convert the dollars to naira? It is a shame that our people go to places where things work, they send their children overseas to study because things are working well there. ‘‘Why is it that the people who are now in government, those who went to the university, who enjoyed bursary award, free education, federal scholarship cannot even give scholarships, cannot even pay salaries? “All over the place, the primary and secondary schools are crying. Then come to the universities, colleges of education and polytechnics. ‘‘Nobody is enjoying the strike. If they uplift the system, strike will stop. As long as they continue to play politics, we will continue to go on strike.” When asked to comment on the court judgement, he said, ‘‘The courts are no longer the hope of common persons. I cannot address that issue because the national body has not come out with any statement. “You see, they are using courts to do whatever things they want to do. The court is not helping the situation. Nigerian people don’t believe in court any more. “It is going to be worse for this country when the courts are no longer doing what is proper; nobody will be interested in going to court. ‘‘We did our work. There is no question…Are they saying we did not work? “After the strike, we went back and made sure that every lacuna was closed up. JAMB has continued to admit people because we are teaching. https://.ng/2023/11/29/withheld-salaries-uncertainty-as-ASUU-rejects-fgs-offer/

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has vowed that strikes by university lecturers would be a thing of the past under his administration. Tinubu said that all necessary actions would be taken to ensure that universities do not embark on strike actions again. .ng reported that the President had announced the cancellation of the controversial deduction of 40 per cent of Internally Generated Revenues (IGRs) from government-owned universities. He said his government would exhaust all avenues for dialogue before any strike actions. The President, represented by a former President of West Africa College of Surgeon (WACS) and a visiting Professor of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Prof. King-David Terna Yawe, spoke at the 33rd convocation ceremony of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA). Tinubu said his government was committed to tackling all education sector challenges. “I would like to enjoin all the unions in our universities to cooperate with the government to deliver the needed development by ensuring an atmosphere of peace and tranquillity on our campuses. “On our part, we will ensure that motivational activities are put in place to ensure improved productivity. Reciprocative actions would be expected from our universities as the government works hard to raise the bar of a conducive teaching and learning environment. “To whom much is given, much is expected. Dialogue, patience, and positive engagements are better means of achieving results than strike actions. Industrial disharmony does nothing but disrupt life, waste time, and elongate the academic calendar. “Therefore, all avenues for dialogue must be explored and exhausted before strike actions are considered, and as the last resort,” he said. https://.ng/2023/11/19/therell-be-no-strikes-in-universities-again-tinubu/

He described Yakubu and INEC as frauds over the conduct of the just-concluded governorship election. Featuring on Arise TV, Melaye claimed that INEC helped the All Progressives Congress, APC, rig the just-concluded governorship election. The PDP chieftain vowed to write and inform the international communities of Yakubu and INEC’s alleged aiding of rigging in Kogi State. He vowed to organize a protest against Yakubu over the conduct of INEC in the last election. He lamented that results were manipulated, and his votes were deducted and added to APC, among others. According to Melaye: “With comparative analyses from the past, I have seen different types of rigging but the brazen daylight robbery, I have never seen it before. “INEC demonstrated that they are co-travellers with APC in this business, the speed with which they accepted the concocted results written before accreditation, with all the mutations, and reducing votes of PDP openly and increasing that of APC, people voting above accreditation tells it all. “Results shown are more than PVC collected, I have never seen this type before. “This is appalling and we know that the Almighty God that we serve will punish Mahmood Yakubu, he will not go free. “We will organize protest, we will write letters to all embassies, the international communities telling them that he is a fraud, INEC is a fraud and we will not allow it.” https://.ng/2023/11/15/kogi-guber-dino-melaye-slams-inec-chairman-yakubu-reveals-next-line-of-action/

The Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese and Convener of the National Peace Committee, Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, has described Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State as a poor representation of the teeming Nigerian youths. Speaking against the backdrop of the current disturbing violence in the North Central state ahead of the November 11 governorship election, Bishop Kukah believed, “Sadly, I think he’s been a very poor advertisement for what young people can do.” He added, “I feel very sad because Kogi has been on the front burner, and Yahaya Bello, the governor, prided himself on being the youngest governor and being a representation of what the youths of this country can do if they are given the opportunity.” Speaking during an interview on ChannelS TV Sunrise Daily Programme on Wednesday, Bishop Kukah observed that Governor Bello, 48, became the Kogi State Chief Executive in 2015 after the death of Abubakar Audu, who was initially the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and has been elected for a second term in November 2019. Bishop Kukah sued for peace on the current face-off between the labour movement leadership in the country and the Imo state government, saying that all parties and stakeholders concerned should sheath their swords and allow for peaceful elections in the State. He urged organised labour to explore a peaceful resolution to the conflict, saying that Nigerians keep making the point that the people who are contesting elections are their sons and daughters and that whatever we do, in conscience, Nigerians must always think about the common good. He advised that civil society organisations, unions, and churches with a bit of moral authority must always act in the common interest of everybody, pointing out that without a country, there will be no trade union, as all that is needed to be done is to look outside the window and see what is happening in the Middle East today, specifically in Israel and Gaza. According to him, when elections go wrong, it is ordinary people who suffer and he hoped that the labour leaders in Imo would really be more circumspect and ask themselves, ‘Who stands to gain and who stands to lose what?’ believing that, at the end of the day, it is the people of Imo, who are not electing someone who is outside their state. Bishop Kukah noted that Imo is a deeply Christian environment and hoped their religious leaders and others with moral authority could prevail on the union to defer whatever their grievance may be, saying that it can only be resolved in a peaceful environment. He appealed to the police and other relevant agencies to ensure security during the governorship elections in the three states, saying that the people’s welfare and well-being cannot be sacrificed on the altar of personal or group interests. https://.ng/2023/11/09/you-are-a-poor-representation-of-teeming-nigerian-youths-bishop-kukah-knocks-yahaya-bello/

The Confederation of All Progressives Congress (APC) Support Groups has appealed to the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) to shelve its planned nationwide strike. The group’s Director-General, Kailani Muhammed, made the appeal in a statement in Abuja on Monday. Muhammed said that such planned action could disrupt the entire fabric of the economy and socio-democratic processes of the country. “We are using this forum to passionately appeal to NLC, the umbrella body of Nigerian workers, to shelve its planned strike on the physical assault on the NLC President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, in Imo State. “We believe that the NLC knows the consequences of the planned strike fully well, more than anybody else,” the director-general said. He said that the planned strike would have a devastating effect on the nation. According to him, it might derail and stampede the Nigerian economy and create unnecessary chaos through the consequential halting of all economic activities in the country. “The commoner on the street, whom the NLC protects, will be more negatively impacted. This is because the already high cost of goods and services will soar to unimaginable proportions. “This is deadly because they cannot be bought down by changing situations. As we all know, prices never come down in Nigeria once they go up. “It is given the above submissions that we are making this appeal, firstly as concerned citizens and, more importantly, as true democrats, whose main focus is the well-being of the Nigerian nation,” Muhammed said. https://.ng/2023/11/07/ajaero-apc-group-begs-nlc-to-shelve-planned-strike/
