TravelBoat Mishaps: FG, Operators Share Blames As Over 900 Nigerians Die In 3 Months by Thonyb(op): 9:35am On Sep 15, 2023
For a couple of years now, many Nigerians have lost their lives in boat accidents that happened across the country.

Surprisingly, the northern part, which ordinarily, has not much water body, has had a fair share of the mishaps.

Although, southern part of the country also witnesses boat mishaps, it is not surprising to many because the region boasts of heavy water bodies. Most southern states, particularly in the Niger Delta region, the South West and parts of the South-East region, are coastal areas, where water transport systems thrive.

However, in the last three months, cases of boat mishaps have continued unabated, especially in the northern part of the country, thus, sparking concerns about the management of water transport in Nigeria, and in the northern states particularly.

On Monday, September 4, two lives were lost when a canoe travelling between Mayo-Ine and Mayo Belwa in Mayo Belwa Local Government Area of Adamawa State capsized.

Four days after the unfortunate incident, specifically on Friday, September 8, another water accident involving a canoe paddling 23 traders and farmers from Rugange village, Yola, in Yola-South Local Government Area of Adamawa State occurred. This particular mishap, which happened in Njuwa Lake at Dandu Village, killed 15 people.

Then, on Sunday, September 10, another boat capsized in the Mokwa area of Niger State, where over 30 farmers were reportedly killed.

The following day, on Monday, another boat conveying dozens of passengers was overturned by strong wind in Gurin, Fufore Local Area of Adamawa State. Eleven bodies were reported to have been recovered by local divers, while many more remained missing.

Also, recall that in June, over 100 people lost their lives when the boat they were travelling in, capsized in Patigi area of Kwara State. The deceased were reportedly returning from a marriage ceremony, which took place in the neighbouring Niger State when the sad incident occurred.

Checks by .ng revealed that in the last three months, no fewer than 936 people have died in water accidents in Lagos, Ondo, Niger, Taraba, Benue, Kwara, Kebbi, Bauchi, Sokoto, Adamawa, Nasarawa, Cross-River, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Anambra States, among others.

The recent spate of boat mishaps has drawn the ire of Nigerians with many calling on both the federal and the state governments to go beyond the normal rhetoric expressing condolences to the deceased families and ordering for probes into the many incidents, and ensure that concrete, measurable steps were urgently taken to arrest the disturbing trend.

Experts blame the rising trend on the failure of the government at all levels to entrench an efficient and effective safety system in the waterways.

Those who hold this view wondered why operators would not provide ordinary life jackets for their passengers. They also stressed that where jackets are provided, some passengers would insist that they don’t want to put on the jacket, and they would be allowed to enter the boat instead of forcing such passengers to disembark.

There are others who attributed the majority of the water accidents to the use of wooden canoes for transport in many communities instead of embracing modern boats.

Others blame the development on overloading.

A leading voice among this group is a Professor of Transportation, Samuel Odewunmi.

He noted that overloading was a major cause of boat mishap, even as he also blamed the operators for engaging in activities that predispose them to accidents like drinking alcohol and consuming other dangerous hard substances.

“There is the issue of overload. In most of those boats, the operators carry more than their normal capacity. We normally have many of them that are overloaded. So, with the smallest turbulence, the boat just capsizes.

“The second reason is the condition of those boats. If you go into history, there were cases when the engine just stopped midstream. This happens when there is high tide. In most of our rivers, the current is so high and when this happens, the boat starts drifting, and the next thing that will follow is capsizing.

“I went to Igbokoda to use those boats when I was doing a particular research, and I observed that all those boys were on something. They take all sorts of drugs and alcoholic drinks before embarking on trips,” he revealed.

Odewunmi, who was one time Dean, School of Transportation and Logistics, Lagos State University, did not forget the place of proper regulation in the whole scenario.

He said: “Where there is regulation, especially in Lagos where we have Lagos State Waterways Authority, LASWA, enforcement is not as rigorous as it is expected to be. The operation of those boats should stop around 6pm or 7pm at most, but you would discover that most of them operate at night. In our transportation system, enforcement is usually our weak side.”

Also, speaking on the development, a member of Nigeria Merchant Navy Officers, and Water Transport Senior Staff Association, NMNO/WTSSA, who doesn’t want his name in print, insisted that all the boats that operate on the waterways need to be examined to determine those that ought to be phased out.

He said there should be regular training of those who are operating the boat.

“Let them be certified; let it not be an all comer’s affairs, where anybody can just come in and start operating a boat.

“Those who operate the boats must also be examined. There must be an annual inspection and they must go back to class for their certificates to be examined,” he said.

He noted that most of the operators and passengers don’t use life-jackets.

“Some passengers would not like to use the life-jacket; they will tell you, it is not their business. I think anybody who refuses to use a life-jacket should not be allowed to be in a boat,” he said.

He also charged the regulatory authorities to be alive to their responsibilities.

“The regulatory authorities should also be around at various jetties to check the operators and ensure that all passengers put on life-jackets.

“Let the authorities also identify wrecks, and if possible, remove them along the waterways. Let the life jacket be properly worn and checked by authorities at disembarkation and embarkation,” he added.

He equally identified alcohol as another cause of accidents on waterways.

He made specific reference to weather as a contributory factor to boat mishaps.

He, therefore, asked the concerned authorities to rise to the challenge, saying, “There should be strict adherence to the law prohibiting alcohol intake by the boat drivers. The law says no alcohol 12 hours before a journey.

“There should also be strict adherence to the weather forecast before movement. The operators should be regulated.”

Again, a Nigeria Police Marine Officer, who preferred anonymity, also said although the incessant mishaps could be attributed to the tidal waves which had risen due to the fact that the water level had appreciated so much, many of the mishaps are still the handiwork of waterways users, who had thrown caution to the winds.

“Even when we, as enforcement agents, try to regulate them, sometimes, they prove so stubborn. They are supposed to use life safety appliances, like life jackets because they are the things that can keep people afloat if there is any accident, but they don’t,” he lamented.

He equally said overloading was responsible for most of the mishaps on waterways.

“Most of the boats are overloaded. Just like what obtains on the land when you see tricycle operators carrying too many loads, boats are also overloaded,” he said.

Responding to the report that whether boat drivers are not certified, the marine officer said: “We have various forms of certification. For local waterways users like the fishermen that operate in the local areas, they are not certified, but those that use engine boats are supposed to be certified by Nigeria Inland Waterways Authority, NIWA, which regulates their activities. But, at the level of enforcement, our own is to ensure that all the safety measures are applied.”

He added that recklessness on the part of waterways users equally contributes to boat accidents.

“Some of the boat operators are reckless so much that they engage in drunkenness, just like what you have on land. If you check most of the waterways jetties, they have places where people sell intoxicated drinks.

“So, some of them drink before they embark on the journey. Those are the things we discourage, and we also encourage the public to be aware of such actions,” he said.

In her contribution, the Founder and Coordinator, Women Arise Initiative for Change, Dr. Josephine Okei-Odumakin, described the development as sad and called for immediate action by all concerned authorities, particularly those in charge of the waterways.

She said: “One sad practice that I have noticed is the non-adherence of boat operators on the waterways to the use of safety jackets. And this has become a major factor that leads to loss of lives whenever there is a mishap on the waterway.

“Therefore, there must be an immediate enforcement of every law guiding the operations of the transport system on the waterways.

“Most importantly, there must be proper regulations and enforcement like what we have on our roads across the country through the efforts of the Federal Road Safety Corps; such efforts must be replicated on our waterways.”

Also speaking, Mr. Marcellus Onah chided both the state and federal governments’ agencies for failing in their responsibility.

He believes that the government has no justifiable reason for its inability to protect lives on waterways.

“To me, the excuse that the government does not have the capacity to police all the waterways in the country is untenable.

“It is either you are into water transport or you are out of it. But, if you accept it as a necessary means of transport, then you must deploy all necessary apparatus, including the regulatory tools, to ensure that it does not only function, but also that those who will make use of it are safe.

“Secondly, for a regulatory agency to say that it cannot force people to wear life jackets is also lame. I don’t believe such excuses. They should just sit up and do their job. Life is so precious to be wasted just like that,” he stated.

However, the .ng random visit to one of the jetties in Lagos revealed how ineffective the enforcement of the use of life jackets is.

While most passengers wore life jackets, a few others didn’t bother to wear the life-saver.

When one of the operators, who gave his name as TJ was accosted, he simply said that some passengers don’t like putting on the life jacket and they can’t force them to do so.

He also said that those who refuse to put on jackets could be arrested by the marine police, if they run into them.

He affirmed that most of the local boat operators are not certified by any agency, except those who want to work in an expatriate company.

“It is only if you want to work with the white people that you bother about certification, otherwise most people here don’t have any certificate.

“There is no license like what is obtained on land where people get driver’s license before they are allowed to drive a car. Here, it is not like that. Most of us learn it from our brothers. Again, most people who live on the riverine area cannot but learn how to drive a boat or how to paddle a canoe. For some people, it runs in their family,” he revealed.

On the allegation that they always overload their boat, he said: “The boats have different capacities. Some are 60 horsepower; others are 120, 150 or even more. If you load what a 120 horsepower boat is supposed to carry in a 60 horsepower boat, then it amounts to overloading. So, bros, it depends on the capacity of the boat engine,” he submitted.

He, however, admitted that some boats are actually too old and need to be replaced as they constitute a big threat to the safety of passengers.

Several of the boat mishaps in Nigeria give credence to the words of Federico Chini, who said: “It takes just one wave to capsize a boat, and one more to take it down.”

PoliticsImo PDP Rejects Nullification Of Ugochinyere, Okeke’s Elections By Tribunal by Thonyb(op): 3:02pm On Sep 13, 2023
The Imo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has rejected the nullification of the elections of members representing Ideato North/South and Okigwe South federal constituencies in the House of Representatives, Barr. Ikenga Ugochinyere and Hon. Jonas Okeke, respectively, by the Imo State National/State Assembly Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Mararaba, Nasarawa State.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by its Acting State Publicity Secretary, Mazi Emenike Nmeregini, the opposition party said the two lawmakers won their elections by landslide in the February 25 National Assembly polls.

The PDP also described the verdicts as a setback and vowed to upturn them at the Court of Appeal.

The statement read, “It is with deep reservations and reprehension that the lmo State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party received the news of the nullification of elections of Rt Hon. Barr. Ikenga lmo Ugochinyere lkeagwuonu (representing Ideato North and South), Rt Hon Jonas Okeke (Okigwe South) respectively by the lmo State Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Mararaba, Nasarawa state. The decision of the Tribunal in these cases is highly condemnable and regrettable.

“The two proactive Lawmakers won landslide in the February 25, 2023 National Assembly election as members of the House of Representative, representing their respective constituencies in the state.

“As a responsible and responsive political party, the verdict of the Tribunal, smacks of huge surprise, considering the preponderance of potent evidence in facts and figures, tendered before it to justify results of the elections. The eventual decisions of the Learned Justices will definitely leave sour taste in the mouth of electorate in the constituencies.

“It is unfortunate that without reference to hindsight, the honourable Tribunal hinged their judgments on pre-election matters that have earlier been dismissed by courts of competent jurisdiction.

“This also, is in disregard to the fact that the matter is purely internal party affairs and as such can only be raised by a member of lmo PDP and not non PDP member. The verdicts from all intents and purposes, seem to be shrouded in barefaced illusion and mystery.

“The lmo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party views the separate judgements as setback to our nation’s judiciary, and as well rejects in its totality these laughable exercise of crudity. The party shall without equivocation stand against this position of the Tribunal until it reverses this judgement that will continue to torment our legal jurisprudence.

“We respect and have absolute confidence in the judiciary and expect that it will do the needful to redeem the seeming diminishing image of the nation’s temple of justice.

“While expecting the Appeal court to do the needful in no distance time, our party therefore calls on our aggrieved teeming members and electorate in ldeato North/South and Okigwe South Federal Constituencies to keep their calm as we expect that justice will take its normal course in the respective cases very soon.”

CrimeContractor Accuses Works Ministry Of Inflating Project From ₦‎9 To ₦‎54 Billion by Thonyb(op): 7:17am On Sep 09, 2023
Drama ensued at the House of Representatives Ad-hoc Committee investigative hearing on Thursday as a construction company, DC Engineering Limited accused officials of the Federal Ministry of Works of inflating a road contract from N9.8 billion to N54.3 billion.

Construction and rehabilitation of 41-kilometre Ijebu-Igbo Ita Ibadan Road has been halted for over five years after its award of contract and became a source of deep concern leading to the setting up of an Ad-hoc Committee by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas.

The Executive Director of DC Engineering Ltd, Engr. Ade Adedeji who was summoned for appearance by the Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Kwamoti Bitrus Laori, revealed in full glare of the public that the contract was supposed to be completed within two years but it took the Federal Ministry of Works five years (2018 to 2023) before it was able to pay 15 percent mobilisation fund of N1.3 billion.

Armed with documents, including the letter of the award of contract, Engr. Adedeji alleged that having been inflated, it became a challenge for the Federal Government to fund the project.

“The slow pace of work was due to lack of release of funds,” he said.

According to him, the 15 percent mobilisation fee was paid in several instalments until about a few weeks ago when the last instalment of the 15 percent was paid.

Adedeji said his company had approached the Ministry of Works to review the contract sum from N9.8 billion to at least N14 billion due to the high cost of materials, but the ministry of works refused.

He said they were surprised to notice that the same ministry that refused to review the contract upward to at least N14 billion, re-awarded the same contract to AREATECH Construction Ltd at the sum of N54.3 billion without the termination of their contract.

The Director of Highways South, Federal Ministry of Works, Engr. Adedamola Kuti, who represented the ministry before the committee, said the ministry had terminated the contract of DC Engineering since September 2022.

He was, however, silent on why they refused to review the contract sum upward to at least N14 billion as requested by the DC Engineering but went ahead to re-award the same contract to another company, AREATECH Construction Ltd at the sum of N54 billion.

When asked to provide the details – letter of termination of contract with DC Engineering Ltd, certificate of no objection from the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) to AREATECH Construction Ltd and Federal Executive Council’s approval letter, he promised the probe panel that he will go and come back.

In the submission of the Solicitor, Tolu Babaleye & Co on behalf of the DC Engineering Ltd, the company alleged that the activities of Hon. Tolulope Akande Sadipe, a member representing Oluyole Federal Constituency of Oyo State, has been frustrating the efforts of his client to execute the project.

“Our Client is also very much aware of the activities of Hon. Tolulope Akande Sadipe, a member representing Oluyole Federal Constituency whom our client informed us has turned to a torn in its flesh and who has been promoting AREATECH Construction Ltd as contractor to the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing for the contract to be re-awarded to the said company for a reason best known to her.

“This vexed issue is known to everyone in the ministry, especially two particular directors working hand in hand with them and all attempts have been made to re-award the contract for the sum of 54.3 billion Naira from the initial contract of 9.8 billion Naira to AREATECH Construction Ltd whom we understand had signed an agreement with the ministry and had submitted advance payment guarantee from its bank.

“This is a big distraction to our client. Please note that our client wrote for an upward review of this contract sum to an amount far below 54.3 billion Naira but the request was ignored and yet some people in the ministry wanted to re-award the job to someone else for 54.3 billion Naira all in a desperate attempt to defraud the Federal Government of Nigeria,” the Solicitor to DC Engineering Ltd said in a statement submitted to the ad hoc committee.

Responding to the allegation of Hon. Sadipe’s involvement in the contract, the Director of Highways South, Federal Ministry of Works, Engr. Adedamola Kuti denied having any deal with Sadipe.

However, he admitted sending her a congratulatory message after she emerged victorious in the last general election.

Sadipe also denied having any relationship with the contractor, AREATECH Construction Ltd, threatening lawsuit over the allegations against her.

The Chairman of the Ad Hoc Committee, Hon. Kwamot Bitrus Laori said the committee is not witch-hunting anyone but to ensure they get to know the cause of failure of the road project and the way forward.

He allayed the fear of the DC Engineering Ltd, that the company will not get justice from the probe panel since Sadipe is also a member of the parliament and a mover of the motion resulting in the setting up of the ad hoc committee.

Laori said though the committee was set up at the instance of Sadipe’s motion, she is not a member of the committee and she has been excluded from all the committee’s activities except her invitation to respond to the allegations against her.

On Engr. Adedamola Kuti’s position that the contract of DC Engineering Ltd with the Federal Ministry of Works has been terminated in September 2022 and that the company is owing the ministry, the committee was thrown into a confusion when the Executive Director of DC Engineering Ltd, Engr. Ade Adedeji said the ministry had just paid some amount of money to them about two weeks ago as part of the 15 percent mobilisation fee.

When Laori asked the host communities of the said project to clarify which company is now handling the project or whether no contractor is on site, the Chairman of Olojuoro Road Joint Communities Forum, Oluyole LG, Oyo State said, “We are not aware of any contractor on the site apart from DC Engineering Ltd. Their equipment as at July, 2023 were on the site doing ‘palliative work’.

“I called it palliative work because it is only the critical aspect of the job we wanted them to do; there is no fund according to them to do everything.”

Our correspondent learnt that the present Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi in a recent meeting with the contractors and some top officials of the ministry warned against sharp practices and shady deals.

Engr. Kuti also confirmed the meeting between Umahi, contractors and top officials of the ministry but did not give any detail about it.

The representative of the Public Complaints Commission, Hon. Asuwaju Folawuyo Bello, (Commissioner, Oyo State) blamed the mess of the Nigerian Roads on the activities of the ministry of works officials.

Bello, who said they have received several complaints over the said project, expressed dismay on how a project that is supposed to be completed within 24 months (two years) will take the Federal Ministry of Works five years to pay only 15 percent of the contract sum.

The ad hoc committee chairman, Laori directed the Federal Ministry of Works and all other relevant parties to submit the required documents to the committee’s secretariat before or on Monday 11 September, 2023.

The committee then adjourned sine die.

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has arrested one Nuhu Zaria and his girlfriend, Bunmi Samuel, who are allegedly specialized in snatching mobile phones and stealing money from unsuspecting residents.

The Commissioner of Police, Haruna G. Garba, who made this known while parading the suspects on Thursday, said Nuhu, after snatching phones, removes the SIM cards and sells them out while the girlfriend uses them to defraud the victims of their money using bank USSD codes.

He said the operatives of the command attached to the Durumi Police Division recovered 76 SIM cards and other items from the suspects.

He said, “Operatives attached to Durumi Police Division acting on actionable intelligence trailed and arrested one Nuhu Zaria ‘m’ who specialises in snatching GSM Phones from innocent commuters. After snatching phones, he removes the SIM cards and sells the phone, then hands over the SIM cards to his girlfriend, one Bunmi Samuel.

“The girlfriend on her part, makes withdrawals of all monies from the accounts that are linked to the SIM cards. The police operatives have so far recovered seventy-six (76) SIM cards, two (2) Opay ATM cards and a golden wristwatch from the suspects”.

Speaking with .ng shortly after the CP briefed journalists, the female suspect confessed that she had been in the business for over a year.

“We have been doing this for more than a year now. We normally open a mobile wallet where we transfer the money using the bank’s USSD code.

“The moment we are able to access the person’s bank account, we use the code to transfer the money to our wallet.

“Most of the SIM cards were already registered with the banks for mobile banking. I have not made up to N500,000 since I started.

“I appeal to all my victims to please forgive me and I will not do such again in my life.”

PoliticsI Will Retire Atiku To Kombina To Rear Goats, Broilers – Shettima by Thonyb(op): 4:47pm On Sep 07, 2023
Vice President Kashim Shettima has vowed to retire the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, from politics.

Shettima said he would retire Atiku to Kombina, not Dubai or Morocco, where he would rear animals.

He was addressing journalists after the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal verdict, which upheld the election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

.ng recalls that the five-man panel, in a final judgement read by Justice Haruna Simon Tsammani, struck out the three petitions filed by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Labour Party, LP, and the Allied Peoples Movement, APM.

The Tribunal resolved all the issues against the petitioners in favour of the respondents, President Tinubu, his Vice, Kashim Shettima and the All Progressives Congress, APC.

While the APM is yet to make its line of action known, both the PDP and the LP candidates, Abubakar Atiku and Peter Obi, respectively, have vowed to challenge the judgement at the Supreme Court.

They made their decisions public on Wednesday, shortly after the Tribunal dismissed their petitions.

However, Shettima said he would buy Atiku goats and broilers to rear.

According to Shettima: “We are not going to retire Atiku Abubakar to Dubai or Morocco. I will retire him to Kombina, I will buy him goats and broilers and layers so that he can spend his days rearing goats and broilers.”

PoliticsAtiku, Obi Head For Supreme Court To Challenge Presidential Tribunal’s Judgment by Thonyb(op): 8:51am On Sep 07, 2023
The aggrieved presidential candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Abubakar Atiku and that of the Labour Party, Peter Obi have announced their decision to challenge the Presidential Election Tribunal’s judgments at the Supreme Court.

They made their decisions public on Wednesday shortly after the Tribunal pronounced their petitions dismissed.

In a bid to ensure quick filing of their appeals at the Apex Court, Atiku’s lawyer, Chief Chris Uche, SAN, requested the Tribunal to make a copy of the judgment available to him to enable his client to exercise his right of appeal.

He said that the former Vice President has directed that appeal against the decision be filed immediately.

Uche told newsmen that Atiku got judgment at the Tribunal but did not get justice, hence, his decision to go on appeal.

Similarly, Livy Uzoukwu, SAN, the lead counsel to Obi confirmed that his client had directed that the judgment be challenged at the Supreme Court.

He wondered why the Tribunal which ruled against live telecast of proceedings suddenly allowed live coverage of the judgment.

In response to Atiku’s request, Chairman of the Tribunal, Justice Haruna Simon Tsammani assured that clean copies of the judgment would be released to them on Thursday to enable them proceed on their appeal to the Supreme Court.

CrimeTwo Suspects Arrested Over Truck Driver’s Death In Lagos by Thonyb(op): 6:33am On Sep 07, 2023
The Lagos State Police Command in Lagos State has arrested two people suspected of being involved in the killing of a truck driver in the Mile 2 area of the state.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the arrest on Wednesday.

He said that the truck had been towed to the Lagos State Transport Management Agency (LASTMA) yard in Oshodi.

“Two suspects have been arrested, and they are helping the police with the ongoing investigation,” he said.

Earlier on Tuesday, there were unconfirmed reports that men of the state task force allegedly killed a yet-to-be-identified person in Mile 2, along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.

This led to protests by some people, who set up bonfires on the ever-busy road.

Hundeyin told NAN that the police received conflicting reports about the killing around 1 am on Tuesday.

He said the motorboy of the truck was also injured and was receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.

“The claims cannot be confirmed yet. Information is still sketchy. The situation has been brought under control. Police patrol teams have arrived, and the obstacles are being cleared for the free flow of traffic,” he said.

PoliticsWhy We Upheld Shettima’s Nomination – Tribunal by Thonyb(op): 2:50pm On Sep 06, 2023
The Presidential Election Petition Tribunal on Wednesday struck out the petition of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM).

In a ruling on the objections against the petition made by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shetima and the All Progressives Congress (APC), the Presiding Justice of the Court, Justice Haruna Simon Tsammani held that the petition lacked merit and competence for it to be determined.

Among others, Tsammani said the disqualification issue on which the petition was predicated was a pre-election matter that ought to have been taken to a Federal High Court and not a Tribunal.

Being a pre-election matter, the Tribunal said that it has no jurisdiction to dabble into the issue of disqualification to question the nomination and declaration of Tinubu, Shetima and APC victory at the presidential election.

He also held that the petition was statute-barred, having been filed outside the period allowed by law.

He further held that the APM lacked the locus standi to institute the petition because its presidential candidate, as a necessary person who stood for the presidential election along with Tinubu, was not part of the petition.

APM’s grouse was that Shetima engaged in double nominations for a Senatorial election in Borno and later as a running mate to Tinubu.

It prayed that the Tribunal axe both Tinubu and Shetima for allegedly violating sections 131 and 137 of the 1999 Constitution in the ways and manners one Kabiru Masari opted out as Tinubu’s running mate and Shetima brought in.

Details later.

PoliticsJudgement Day: Tension As Presidential Election Tribunal Delivers Verdict by Thonyb(op): 7:41am On Sep 06, 2023
The long-awaited judgement day is here. There is tension, anxiety across Nigeria.

PM NEWS reports that hours after the Presidency issued a statement, on Sunday, September 3, to disclose that President Bola Tinubu will be travelling to New Delhi, India, for the G-20 Summit, the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal, PEPT, finally announced that it had set a date to deliver judgement in petitions filed against the outcome of the 2023 presidential election.

Interestingly, the PEPT said the judgement delivery would be televised live.

Tinubu will not be in the country when the tribunal decides whether to affirm his victory, or nullify it, as requested by Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Peter Obi of the Labour Party, LP, and the Allied Peoples Movement, APM, who filed separate petitions to challenge the result declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, after the February 25 presidential poll.

It could be a coincidence that the tribunal fixed the judgement on a date the President would be away from the country but Nigerians are waiting with bated breath for the Justice Haruna Tsammani-led panel to deliver its verdict.

The 2023 presidential election was one of the most keenly contested, and fiercely disputed since Nigeria returned to democratic rule in 1999 and the anxieties that surrounded the polls has heightened as the tribunal gets set to announce its decision today, Wednesday.

Already there is tension across the country.

On Monday, September 4, the same day the tribunal announced the date for its judgement, the Department of State Services, DSS, disclosed in a statement that it had uncovered plans by some elements in parts of the country to stage violent protests in order to discredit the Federal Government.

Although the DSS did not link the alleged plot to the tribunal’s judgement, the language of the statement was similar to an earlier one released by the agency to alert Nigerians of plans by some politicians to form an interim government after the 2023 general elections, just before former President Muhammadu Buhari handed over to Tinubu on May 29.

“Intelligence reports have indicated that the plotters include certain politicians who are desperately mobilising unsuspecting student leaders, ethnic-based associations, youth, and disgruntled groups for the planned action.

“The Service has identified the ring leaders of the plot as well as sustained monitoring around them in order to deter them from plunging the country into anarchy,” the DSS said in the statement released on Monday, September 4.

Meanwhile, just before he left for India, Tinubu chaired a meeting of the National Security Council at the State House, Abuja. ⁣⁣

Details of what transpired at the meeting were not made public. But many Nigerians are insinuating that the meeting might not be unconnected with tensions surrounding the tribunal’s judgement.

President not worried about tribunal judgement – Presidency

However, with tensions rising as the clock counts down to the judgement, Tinubu’s spokesperson declared that the President is not worried about the decision of the tribunal.

Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, made the claim when he appeared on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday evening.

“He’s not worried simply because he knows he won the election,” Ngelale said.

But, in a veiled reference to the controversial ‘All Eyes on the Judiciary’ billboards erected by some Nigerians ahead of the tribunal’s verdict, the presidential spokesperson added, “The President sees no need to threaten judicial officers. He sees no need to raise speculations against the integrity of judicial officers; he believes in the sanctity and integrity of the Nigerian judicial system, he believes the great men and women on the panel will make their decisions based only on the facts before them.”

According to Ngelale, “He (Tinubu) will continue to ensure that no matter what the outcome of the judgement is, he does his part and ensure that our institutions continue to be respected, not just by him, but all actors.”

However, the Labour Party immediately countered the Presidency’s assertion that Tinubu won the election.

When contacted by DAILY POST on Tuesday, September 5, spokesperson of the Labour Party, Obiora Ifoh expressed confidence that the judgement will go the way of the party and its presidential candidate, Obi.

“We are positive that the judgement will favour the Labour Party and our presidential candidate, Peter Obi. We are also positive that the will of the people will prevail.

“Most Nigerians have waited this long and their wishes will be granted. The mandate freely expressed on February 25 will be returned to the rightful winner of the election,” Ifoh said in a message he sent to PM NEWS on Whatsapp.

PDP spokesperson, Debo Ologunagba, could not be reached for comments on Tuesday. Calls to his phone were not answered. He also did not reply to an SMS sent to him by PM NEWS.

Arguments, prayers before the tribunal

The tribunal had since August 1 reserved judgement after parties in the suit adopted their final written addresses.

According to the result declared by INEC, Tinubu of the APC polled 8,794,726 votes to win the presidential election. Atiku, of the PDP, finished second with 6,984,520 votes, while Obi, of the LP, came third with 6,101,533.

Tinubu won in 12 states, just like Atiku. But Obi won 11 states plus the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Tinubu’s eligibility to be President after failing to get up to 25 per cent of the votes cast in the FCT is one of the key issues to be determined by the tribunal in arriving at its verdict.

Atiku, Obi and the APM are asking the tribunal to nullify the result of the 2023 presidential election.

Atiku, through his lead counsel, Chris Uche, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), had asked the tribunal to declare that Tinubu was not qualified to contest the February 25 presidential election due to a United States court ruling that ordered him to forfeit $460,000 for drug and money laundering-related offences.

The PDP candidate, in the petition marked CA/PEPC/05/2023, also asked the tribunal to nullify the election and order a fresh poll.

According to Atiku and the PDP, the INEC contravened provisions of the amended Electoral Act by failing to electronically transmit the results of the election, even after receiving over N355 billion for the conduct of the poll.

Obi, in asking the tribunal to nullify Tinubu’s victory in his petition marked CA/PEPC/03/2023, hinged his claims on Tinubu’s alleged drug trafficking offence in the US, as well as his inability to win 25 per cent of votes cast in the FCT.

According to Obi’s legal team, led by Livy Uzoukwu, SAN, Tinubu, due to the forfeiture of $460,000 in the US and his failure to receive 25 per cent of the votes cast in the FCT, should not have been declared President.

Obi’s lawyers also argued that the votes cast for Tinubu should be voided because his running mate, Kashim Shettima, was simultaneously nominated as APC candidate for Borno Central Senatorial District and the party’s vice presidential flagbearer, in violation of provisions of the Electoral Act.

The LP candidate equally faulted INEC’s claim that technical glitches were responsible for the inability to upload results on the INEC Result Viewing, IReV, portal.

Rather, according to Obi’s lawyers, INEC’s failure to upload the results was an act of sabotage designed to influence the outcome of the election.

Obi is asking the tribunal to cancel the election and order INEC to conduct a fresh one, or, in the alternative, declare him the President-elect, and order the electoral commission to issue him a certificate of return.

The APM, in its petition, contended that Tinubu’s candidacy was invalidated by the withdrawal of Ibrahim Masari, who was initially nominated as the vice presidential candidate of the APC, going by the provisions of sections 131(c) and 142 of the 1999 Constitution, as amended.

According to the APM, there was a gap of about three weeks between the period that Masari expressed intention to withdraw, the actual withdrawal of his nomination, and the time Tinubu replaced him with Shettima

Arguing that Tinubu’s candidature had elapsed at the time he nominated Shettima as Masari’s replacement, the APM urged the tribunal to declare that Shettima was not qualified to contest as the vice presidential candidate of the APC as of February 25 when the election was conducted by INEC, having violated the provisions of Section 35 of the Electoral Act, 2022.

The party urged the tribunal to nullify and void all the votes scored by Tinubu in the presidential election and also set aside the Certificate of Return that was issued to him by INEC.

Tinubu and APC’s lawyers, as well as those of the Independent National Electoral Commission, are asking the tribunal to dismiss the petitions filed against the outcome of the presidential poll.

APC counsel, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, now Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, had while adopting his final written addresses argued that Tinubu’s forfeiture of $460,000 in the US was a civil matter and should not warrant disqualification from the election.

Picking holes in another critical argument against his client’s election, Tinubu’s counsel, Wole Olanipekun, SAN, had argued that the FCT counts as 37th state for electoral purposes and as such, the President’s failure to get 25 per cent of votes in the territory should not invalidate his election.

Olanipekun urged the tribunal to dismiss the petitions for lacking in merit.

INEC counsel, Abubakar Mahmoud, SAN, faulted the petitioners’ claims that the Commission’s failure to upload results on the INEC IReV portal affected the outcome of the election.

Insisting that the election was conducted in substantial compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Act, as amended, the INEC counsel told the tribunal that it was illogical for the petitioners to claim that a candidate must secure 25 per cent votes in the FCT to be declared winner of the presidential poll.

All eyes on the judiciary

Billboards with the inscription ‘All Eyes on the Judiciary’ sprung up in different parts of the country after the presidential election tribunal reserved judgement on August 1.

The billboards were eventually dismantled in controversial circumstances after the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON) ordered their removal on August 15.

ARCON said it considered the billboards as “blackmail against the Nigerian Judiciary, the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal, and particularly the Honourable Justices of the Tribunal who are expected to discharge their judicial functions without fear or favour”.

However, all eyes will indeed be on the Nigerian judiciary when the tribunal delivers its verdict today, Wednesday.

Some Nigerians, who spoke to PM NEWS on Tuesday, September 5, shared their expectations on the judgement.

President, Civil Rights Realisation and Advancement Network, CRRAN, Olu Omotayo, said the tribunal’s verdict should not be based on technicalities.

Omotayo said the judgement should be based on justice, fairness and equity.

He said, “Nigerians are divided along political lines. Peoples’ expectations are largely based on their political affiliations.

“Supporters of the APC, PDP and LP are all clamouring that the judgement must be in their favour. But this is like a game of football, not all of them will carry the day. Somebody will come out victorious.

“But the judgement should be based on sound reasoning. Whatever decision they arrive at should be based on sound principles of law, not on technicalities. That is what every Nigerian should be expecting.

“Justice is not a one-way traffic. Justice must be done based on what the law says. The only advice for the judges of the tribunal is that their judgement should be based on justice, fairness and equity and on sound principles of law.”

Also speaking with PM NEWS, Secretary General of the Conference Of Nigeria Political Parties, CNPP, Willy Ezugwu, noted that the eyes of the whole world is on the tribunal.

“The world is watching, not only Nigerians. Everybody is watching the judiciary. We are watching to see what the tribunal will come up with, with all the evidence on the ground,” Ezugwu said.

He also advised against building the judgement on technicalities.

“They don’t have to arrive at the judgement on technicalities. Every person knows – no one can say they are not judges and for that reason, they are not able to decide. That is why Nigerians are crying, they are shouting, they are pronouncing that all eyes are on the judges,” he stated.

PoliticsLP, PDP Chieftains Urges Calm As Presidential Tribunal Delivers Judgement by Thonyb(op): 7:17am On Sep 06, 2023
Ahead of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal Judgment scheduled to take place today (Wednesday), Nigerians, particularly supporters of opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and the Labour Party, LP, have been urged to eschew violence and remain calm.

PM NEWS reports that there are insinuations that the LP supporters and their counterparts in the PDP are planning to stage a protest if the judgement is made in favour of the ruling All Progressives Congress.

Recall that the presidential candidate of LP in the February election, Peter Obi and his PDP counterpart, Atiku Abubakar had rejected the outcome of the election over alleged irregularities, which according to them marred the poll.

Contrary to the declaration by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, that President Bola Tinubu won the poll after scoring the highest votes, Obi and Atiku approached the tribunal seeking the nullification of Tinubu’s victory.

Obi and Atiku argued that Tinubu did not win a majority of lawful votes as claimed by the electoral umpire.

According to the petitioners, as at the time INEC chairman, Mahmood Yakuku, declared Tinubu as winner, collation was ongoing, since many of the presidential election results were yet to be uploaded unto the INEC’s Results Viewing (IReV) Portals.

Obi is also asking the court to nullify Tinubu’s victory on the ground that the ruling party failed to garner 25 per cent votes in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT.

A month after concluding hearing in the petitions, the five-member panel of the Presidential Election Petition Court, led by Justice Haruna Tsammani, is set to deliver judgment.

PM NEWS reports that the event which is expected to be televised, has triggered tension across the country.

While the spokesperson to President Tinubu, Ajuri Ngelale claimed that his principal is not worried about the possible verdict of the presidential election tribunal, the same may not be the reality with some Nigerians, including the petitioners.

According to the Department of State Services, DSS, some individuals are already planning to stage violent protests across the country.

However, some stakeholders have called for calm, urging Nigerians to prepare themselves to accept the judgement in good faith.

In a chat with PM NEWS on Tuesday, the Head, Media and Communications of the defunct Obi-Datti Presidential Campaign Council, Diran Onifade said there is no need to cause chaos no matter the verdict by the tribunal.

According to him, the tribunal judgement is not final, stressing that it is still subject to appeal.

He said, “We have always been appealing to our own supporters to take the judgement whichever way it comes.

“This is just a first instance in the case, there is still opportunity for appeal. We don’t know who the judgement will favour yet but we have been appealing to our supporters to give peace a chance.

“We should not go with the mindset that we can’t get justice. The judges gave us fair opportunities, they listened to us and each of us presented the evidence we have.

“While in court, we saw what the other party presented and we know we have a good case. It is now up to the judges to determine the outcome”.

Similarly, a Chieftain of the main opposition party, PDP, Mr Iorfa Mathew called on Atiku’s supporters to remain calm no matter the outcome of the petition.

In a chat with our correspondent, Iorfa urged Nigerians, especially Atiku’s supporters, to accept whatever the judgement may be.

“All we want is a country where things are working. It doesn’t matter who the judgement favours, Nigeria will not crash.

“It is the desire to see things working in the country again that made the petitioners go to court, so why would anyone think of causing chaos because of tribunal judgement?

“The tribunal’s judgement is not final. The Supreme Court will have the final judgement, so why are we so worried?

“The system has been in a bad shape for a very long time, changing it won’t come easy. So we should set aside our emotions and accept whatever the judges tell us.

“If we could be so mature when the INEC declared Tinubu winner of the poll and decided to do it in a legal way, we can still do it. Let’s be calm and embrace peace for the sake of our dear nation”, he said.

He was found with bullet wounds on his head after the gun went off accidentally.

The incident was said to have happened on the 26th of August while he was preparing to enjoy the weekend with his family.

A family source told newsmen that the incident has left pain and sorrow to the Otobo family of Eguema and Ogbolobiri in Nembe Local Government Area of the state, noting that the deceased, also a civil servant, accidentally shot himself when he slipped and fell while packing his produce.

She said,” The whole community is still in shock of his death. He is a civil servant but most weekends he comes to the village to stay with the family, and this Saturday was one of such. He left the family to the farm, with his farm tools and hunter gun to also hunt animals.”

“He usually goes in a canoe, where he keeps whatever is harvested. On Saturday 26th, he went the same way, so we were all waiting. He came back and was trying to bring in the farm produce. We heard a loud sound, but we didn’t suspect something had gone wrong, but by the time people went outside, they discovered he was lying on the floor bleeding and struggling for survival with a shattered head through bullet wounds.

“All attempt to rush him to the hospital was not productive, as he died on the way. The corpse was later taken to waterside for rituals as the custom demands.

“He must have slipped and fell, so the gun which was loaded already exploded, it’s a sad incident for the family. Who will take care of the six children he left behind?”

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Asinim Butswat, said the incident was yet to be reported to the command.

PoliticsDemolish Aso Villa, Military Barracks – Atiku’s Aide Tells Wike by Thonyb(op): 3:29pm On Sep 01, 2023
As he begins efforts to ensure adherence to the Abuja master plan, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, has been urged to demolish Aso Rock and military barracks within the capital city.

An aide to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, 2023 presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, Daniel Bwala, made the call on Channels Television’s Politics Today.

Bwala explained that Aso Rock and some military barracks must be demolished if the original Abuja master plan must be adhered to.

He said Wike should focus on other important things other than pulling down buildings.

“The FCT is not like the Ministry of Works; it is an Administration. There are many more important things than demolition that make up the Administration of the FCT.

“Let’s even start with the demolition. Wike said he wants to go back to the original Master Plan. If we may talk about the original Master Plan, let me tell you that the Aso Villa that sits the President, the seat of power is not in the original Master Plan, it must go down.

“Secondly, all the military barracks that you see within the FCT are not in the original Master Plan; then the military barracks must go down.

“Thirdly, the famous Asokoro you are hearing and the extension where all the governors in Nigeria either have liaison offices or their private homes, they are not in the original plan, they must go down. There are many Federal Government assets and buildings in strategic places that are not in the original Master Plan.”

Following his resumption as FCT Minister, Wike had threatened to demolish buildings illegally erected.

A 20-year-old boy, simply identified as Ridwan, has confessed that he killed his biological father for money ritual in Ogun State.

He was arrested on Thursday by men of the Ogun State So-Safe Corps at Oshoku village, Ijebu North Local Government Area of Ogun State.

The So-Safe Corps Commander, Soji Ganzallo, in a statement by the corps spokesman, Moruf Yusuf, said at about 12am on Thursday, August 31, officers of the corps on routine patrol heard a strange noise in a building at Oshoku.

The officers were said to have made their way into the building to confirm what was happening, “but to the officers’ dismay, they found a man’s body lying lifeless in a pool of his own blood and the alleged killer fled the scene,” Ganzallo said.

The statement quoted Ganzallo as having instructed the Zonal Commander, Ijebu Zonal Command, Marcus Ayankoya, to get the suspected killer arrested within 24 hours.

The suspected killer was nabbed where he was hiding in a bush.

“He confessed to have killed his father, Ishau with a rope tied to his neck and a knife used to remove the needed parts of his body for ritual purpose,” he said.

The corps commander noted that the alleged killer told the officers of the corps during interrogation that “he only removed the private part, larynx, and just four teeth of his father as requested by a ritualist he identified as Baba Kekere.”

Ganzallo further revealed that when he was asked about the whereabouts of the ritualist, he refused to give details.

He stated that the alleged killer had been transferred to the Nigeria Police Force, Ogbere Divisional Headquarters, for further investigation and likely prosecution.

Crime63-year-old Man Kills Wife For Denying Him Sex by Thonyb(op): 7:42am On Sep 01, 2023
A former staff of Adamawa State Universal Basic Education Board, Aminu Mahdi has been arrested for allegedly beating his wife to death.

Aminu, who is 63 years old and hails from Yelwa Ward in Mubi North Local Government Area, allegedly descended on his second wife, Hadiza Zubuchi, 46, for denying him access to her bed.

The suspect, who has confessed to the crime, told the police that he did not intend that his wife should die, according to the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Suleiman Nguroje.

Nguroje disclosed in an interaction with newsmen late on Thursday that Aminu returned home at 9:00 pm last Sunday, the 27th August, 2023, to meet the circumstances that culminated in his snuffing the life out of his wife.

Nguroje said after Aminu ate his food and changed his clothes, he went to the room he was to spend the night with his wife, but his wife denied him the use of her bed.

As the wife would not let him touch her and she instead started hitting him with a stick, he snatched the stick from her and beat her up repeatedly.

The beating became so severe that the wife, who he married in 2016, died eventually.

In regret while telling the police his story, Aminu said, “I didn’t expect that this kind of incident would happen to me. It was a mistake.”

CrimePolice Breaks Child Trafficking Syndicate, Recover Three Children In Akwa Ibom by Thonyb(op): 6:55am On Aug 31, 2023
Operatives of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command have arrested three suspects for child trafficking.

The suspects arrested across three states include Peace Patrick Paul of Obot in Akara, Akwa Ibom; Mary Eunice in Aba, Abia; and Bella Uko in Asaba, Delta.

Parading them alongside other suspects of various crimes at the police headquarters, Ikot Akpanabia, Uyo, on Wednesday, Akwa Ibom Commissioner of Police, Olatoye Durosinmi, explained that Paul deceived Utibeabasi Monday Enang and stole her two children, who are three and five years old, in May and sold them to Eunice in Aba, who in turn sold them to Uko in Asaba.

Durosinmi said the mother of the stolen children was almost beaten to death when she demanded her children from the suspect and had to flee for her life.

The Commissioner of Police also disclosed that a female suspect, Alayodi Paul Onyekwere of Abroma, Rivers State, was arrested for stealing the 11-year-old daughter of Emmanuel Macauley Daniel of Ikot Ikot Village in Obot Akara LGA.

He said: “The suspect alleged that she was sent by her grandmother to steal the child, which she led operatives to recover in Rivers State. The children are here today and will be reunited with their families.”

In an interview, the mother of the two children, Utibeabasi Enang, explained that the suspect deceived her with a promise to take her to a hospital in Ikot Abasi to treat her for an ailment but attempted to kill her after taking her children to an unknown destination.

According to her: “After Peace took me to the hospital in Ikot Abasi, where it was diagnosed that I had internal heat, she took me to the houses of her different boyfriends, where we stayed for over three weeks. When I started asking for my children, she promised to take me to where they were.

“On our way, she asked the driver to stop by a bridge, saying we would have to cross the bridge. As we were trying to cross the bridge, Peace started beating me and attempted to push me into the river, but I struggled with her until a man who lived close by came to rescue me. He took me to his house, where I used his phone to call someone to send me money because Peace had seized my phone from me.

“When I returned to my village, I reported the matter to my village chairman, who reported the case to Yak Iyamma organisation. I really thank God that after everything, my children were found.”

Also paraded was Sunday Michael Ben, a father who was accused of raping his six-year-old daughter.

The suspect, during interrogation, said: “I had my daughter with me in the house, and that night, I woke up to fix my heater that was bad because there was light. I didn’t touch her. I believe my girlfriend, who was with me in the house, committed the act. I only noticed in the morning that she had bloodstains on her leg.”

The victim, on her part, explained that somebody touched her at night, but she couldn’t say anything or see the person who touched her.

The Commissioner of Police affirmed that the suspects would be charged in court after the conclusion of investigations.

CrimeIkem Okuhu: Attempt To Kidnap Me By Men Claiming To Be Enugu Policemen by Thonyb(op): 12:39pm On Aug 30, 2023
On Friday, August 25, 2023, at about 5.30 pm, two men who introduced themselves as officers of the Nigerian Police, Enugu State Command, accosted me at Umabor, Eha Alumona Nsukka, in what I saw as a broad daylight kidnap attempt.

We were at Umabor for the burial of the father-in-law of my younger brother, and I had gone out to make a phone call when one of these people walked up to me and started a casual conversation, but soon said he had an order to bring me to Enugu.

I initially thought he was joking, and asked him who he was and why I should follow a total stranger to Enugu. That was when he said he was a police officer, and that somebody had written a petition against me. My inquiry as regards who wrote the petition and what the issue was about did not yield anything, as he was soon joined by another roughly dressed man who also claimed he was a policeman. When I asked them for identification, they refused and instead, tried to herd me to their vehicle, an ash-coloured Toyota Sienna minivan.

I was to later learn from friends who knew them that there were five of them in all at the venue: while two were engaging me, the others milled in the crowd ready to take action, should there be any skirmish that might result in the use of firearms.

Afraid for my life, I extricated myself from their company and went straight to inform my younger brother and a few friends who were with us for the funeral ceremony. Crowds soon began to gather, as more people demanded that they properly identify themselves, to which they refused. I immediately knew I was in danger and, with the help of my friends, I left the place and went into hiding.

My immediate suspicion, and that of many people who are aware of this incident, was that the powers that be in Enugu State may be behind the attempt to compromise my safety and freedom. I felt this way because, on August 3, 2023, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor of Enugu State on New Media, Reuben Onyishi, was bragging in a WhatsApp Group that goes by the name, Nsk LGA Political Class, that I and another man, Aniebo Nwamu, would soon be arrested and clamped in detention for what he said was “cybercrime.” I have a screenshot of the comment in question.

It is curious that a government appointee such as Reuben is sharing intelligence with the Nigerian police to the extent that, assuming I was a criminal, which I am not and have never been, he knows the people who are on the police “wanted list” and takes the liberties to brag before his friends about who is being arrested and who isn’t. This has brought the Nigerian police force to a new low and presents them as serving the interest of the few in government while those who have good reasons to not support the government are left at their mercy. This is assuming that I did anything to warrant such a Gestapo method of arrest.

What have I done to even be on the Police wanted list, or any other wanted list for that matter? As an indigene of Enugu State, I have been vocal in pressing for good governance and genuine democracy, particularly in my state.

During the last governorship election, I played an active role in working towards the emergence of Hon. Chijioke Jonathan Edeoga as the governor of Enugu State. Although the Independent National Electoral Commission declared Peter Ndubuisi Mbah of the Peoples Democratic Party as the winner of the election, I remained committed to the struggle to ensure that the real winner of that election emerges.

In doing this, I have had confrontations with a number of PDP supporters in the media; particularly this same Reuben Onyishi whom I mentioned earlier, who, through the stories that he regularly publishes on WhatsApp and other online media platforms, has called me of all manner of unprintable names and accused me of worse, including saying that I was a homosexual and has illicit sodomy with Hon. Chijioke Edeoga.

Since the swearing-in of Peter Mbah as the governor of Enugu State on May 29, 2023, there has been a disconcerting criminalization of free speech and opposition politics. The media have been under severe and dangerous attack from security agencies working on the orders of the state government. It has got so bad that press men in Enugu live in fear, as they are routinely hunted down and clamped into detention under very flimsy excuses.

Some weeks ago, one journalist, Michael Ilediagu, publisher of News Centre, an online newspaper, was arrested, according to police, for cyber terrorism, and detained in one of the police stations in the state capital.

It took the intervention of the President of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, Comrade Chris Isiguzo to free him from the vice grip of his persecutors. Information had it that the police claimed they had an “order from above” (just like the men who came for me told me) to send him to prison for publishing a story about the upheaval that followed the ban on “sit-at-home” in the state by the government. Although he hurriedly removed the “offending post” from his portal after getting wind of his impending arrest, Ilediagu was still arrested and scheduled for a summary arraignment before a magistrate.

But for Comrade Isiguzo’s intervention, the police were said to have prepared his charge sheet and were about to arraign him at a magistrate court, from where a remand order was going to be obtained. The Enugu State Police Command, it has been reported, uses the magistrate courts to routinely clamp opposition voices into detention. Aware that the magistrate courts would decline jurisdiction, the police authorities would intentionally arraign those that they targeted before the courts and have them remanded in custody pending whenever an order for their release would come from the High Courts.

Many other journalists and perceived opposition voices have been targeted for these incessant arrests and detention, in what constitutes the most sustained and desperate attack on free speech and public commentary in the history of Enugu State by a new government. In the month of July, Ifeanyi Ogenyi, a lawyer and Labour Party supporter was arrested and detained for alleged “cyberstalking.” He was later released. In the same way, a councilor from Eha Amufu, Hon. Maxwell Aluagbo, was similarly arrested and detained on the allegation of diverting palliative funds. But he was quickly arraigned on a charge of advance fee fraud and committed to prison by yet another magistrate court and was left in jail for weeks.

It was against the backdrop of these growing assaults on people’s freedom of expression and public commentary that the Media Rights Agenda (MRA) issued a strongly worded statement, condemning what it described as “the continuous harassment and attacks on journalists in Enugu State.

In the statement, signed by its Deputy Executive Director, Ayode Longe, MRA also called on President Bola Tinubu and the Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, to order an investigation into abuse of power by police authorities in Enugu State at the behest of the Governor’s Office for the purpose of harassing and intimidating journalists, with the objective of preventing them from performing their constitutional functions.

MRA ended the statement on a note of caution, stating; “If the situation persists, we will be compelled to activate all constitutional means and international mechanisms available to us to challenge this ongoing illegality which constitutes a clear abuse of office and abuse of power.”

Given what nearly happened to me, the attempt to arrest me on obviously trumped-up charges, and perhaps other potentially sinister clandestine reasons, it does not appear as if either the state government or the police authorities in the state have heeded this call.

As a journalist and believer in the inalienable rights of the individual to liberty and free speech, I feel compelled to cry out against these attacks and, more importantly, the latest one which had the semblance of a kidnap attempt. For people who claimed that they were policemen to refuse to identify themselves while executing what they claimed was a lawful arrest, this cannot be anything but a kidnap attempt.

I have never in all my life, had a run-in with the law. This is because I have intentionally conducted myself in ways that make that absolutely unnecessary. My career in journalism has been stainless, excellent, and development-oriented. I have never had any police record anywhere in Nigeria. It was therefore shocking that people who claimed they were policemen could discreetly trail me to where a burial had just taken place to execute a purported arrest order, in pursuit of a petition allegedly written against me. Only people fleeing from the law for committing capital crimes are trailed and arrested this way.

It was not as if any official invitation had been extended to me and I failed to respond. So, what was the point of trying to whisk me away in such a secret manner, if not for purposes that could possibly be sinister?

I want the world to know that my life is in danger. I want the world and Nigerian authorities to know that there are plans being hatched against me by certain people in Enugu State. I do not feel safe anymore. That is why I am crying out to Nigerians to know of the dangers that I face as a practicing journalist and as a law-abiding citizen, a bonafide Nigerian. I have not committed any crime, except practicing my profession and telling the truth.

I should be allowed to enjoy freedom as provided by the law, as a person living in a civilized country, and more importantly, as an indigene of Enugu State.

When the opportunity to salvage the social, moral, and economic decay in Nigeria came with the emergence of Peter Obi as the leader of a new revolution from the conscience, I joined millions of Nigerians who demanded a new order. I was already openly campaigning for the Peter Obi presidency when Chijioke Edeoga was chosen as the Gubernatorial candidate of the Labour Party in Enugu State. Being one who wants the best for my people, I volunteered to support his election and spent months in Enugu mobilizing the grassroots and convincing the people of the overriding importance of putting a fresh and honest face at the helm of affairs in my dear state.
I am not a registered member of the Labour Party, but I got involved because I thought I should work to save my people from bad governance, by working to elect a person who truly desires to work for the people. Hundreds of thousands of Enugu people were involved in this journey as I was, and together, we worked to ensure that the Chijioke Edeoga triumphed in that election. We believe that Chijioke Edeoga won the election as Governor of Enugu State. We believe that the election tribunal would do the right thing by the people and before God. We believe the people’s mandate will be restored.

As you all know, the matter is before the Enugu State Governorship Elections Petitions Tribunal, and Nigerians are waiting for what is expected to be a redefining moment for the elections and justice.

However, it seems that those who have muscled their way to power in Enugu are out to muzzle the press and free speech, long before the Nigerian judiciary delivers judgment on the various election petitions before them. Journalists practicing in Enugu are scared for their lives and the freedom to practice their trade. It has become an unwritten rule that you must have to be a government apologist or you won’t be allowed to practice your trade in Enugu.

I did not understand why the atmosphere in Enugu had been pervaded with rising consternation until that moment when those stern-looking men came for my arrest. Between Nsukka and Enugu, anything could have happened to me. At a period when kidnapping happens routinely along the Nsukka-Opi-Ugwuogo-Enugu Road, I could possibly have been summarily executed along that stretch of increasingly dangerous road and the blame would be placed on the ubiquitous, yet intractable “UNKNOWN GUNMEN” and life would just go on.

This is why I am raising this alarm. I have not done anything wrong except choosing Chijioke Edeoga and the Labour Party over Peter Mbah and the PDP. This is my choice, and I never made any pretension or secret about it. When I decided to campaign for the Labour Party, I made a public post plainly stating the reasons why I made the choice.

Those who supported and still support the PDP are within their rights to do so. I expect the same rights to be extended to supporters of other parties in the state. Assuming that those who came to pick me up were policemen, it is also my considered view that the Nigerian Police should eschew all forms of partisanship and extend the same protection and privileges to all citizens irrespective of position or affiliation in society.
It is also important for the media across the country to begin to resist the worrisomely flagrant abuse of the rights to freedom of speech and expression in Enugu State because if it is allowed to fester, many of us plying the trade in other supposedly “safe” parts of the country might in future find ourselves in similar or even worse circumstances. Freedom for one is freedom for all. And as Martin Niemöllar said:

“First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out — Because I was not a socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out — Because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out — Because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.”

Thank you very much
