CelebritiesJustice For Mohbad Will Restore Hope In Nigeria’s Justice System – Pastor Giwa by Thonyboy(op): 9:15am On Sep 24, 2023
The Senior Pastor of Awaiting the Second Coming of Jesus Christ Ministry, Pastor Adewale Giwa, at the weekend, appealed to President Bola Tinubu to ensure that the late afrobeat musician, Promise Oladimeji Aloba (a.k.a. Mohbad-Imole) who died a few days ago, gets justice.

Giwa emphasised that delivering justice in the case would not only honour Mohbad’s memory but also restore hope in the hearts of Nigerians who seek fairness and accountability within the country’s justice system.

According to the cleric, Nigerians who have continued to grieve over the death of the deceased, want nothing but justice.

The pastor stressed that despite being a talented musician, Mohbad suffered during his life, and that even in death his suffering persists.

“One thing that President Tinubu can do to make Nigerians happy is to bring those who killed the young man (Mohbad) to justice. He suffered while he was alive and still suffered after his death.

“Everybody knows that an autopsy is a surgical procedure that consists of a thorough examination of a corpse.

“They’ll have to remove all the organs of his body before they can examine whatever they have to examine. So, he suffered while he was alive and still suffered after death.

“I want to appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu because the government controls the police. I want to appeal to him to do justice in this case and bring those who killed the young man to justice.”

InvestmentNEMA Reacts As 3-storey Building Collapses In Lagos by Thonyboy(op): 9:07am On Sep 24, 2023
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) on Saturday confirmed that there was no casualty in the three-storey building that collapsed at 14 Ikpoh Street, Surulere, Lagos.

Mr Ibrahim Farinloye, Territorial Coordinator, NEMA, confirmed the incident to NAN in Lagos.

The building came down at about 10:00 p.m. on Friday night.

Meanwhile, an occupant of the building, Mr Gervase Anyanwu, a businessman, told NAN that all the other occupants were able to run out of the building before it came down completely.

He said there was a large sound in one of its wings before it fell completely.

“Immediately we heard the sound, all the occupants of the building gathered at the mustard point before evacuating for safety.

“No casualty was recorded,” Anyanwu said.

Anyanwu said the immediate evacuation of the occupants was “simply by the grace of God”.

However, NAN gathered from another resident of the street that the building had shown serious signs of distress before it came down.

As at the time of this report, excavation of the rubble from the building was yet to commence, but all the relevant government agencies in charge of emergency were present at the scene.

PoliticsGuber Elections: Tribunals Deliver Landmark Judgements, Fear Grips LP Over Abia by Thonyboy(op): 6:46am On Sep 24, 2023
Governorship Election Petition Tribunals delivered what could be called landmark judgements across the States over the week.

So far, only one governor was axed by the tribunal. Others had their victories validated, at latest for now.

The ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, and the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, secured victory in some states.

.ng recalls that the tribunal, last week, upheld the victory of the PDP in Plateau, Bauchi, Enugu and Zamfara States, dismissing the petitions filed before it by the APC and the Labour Party.

In Plateau, the tribunal affirmed the election of Governor Caleb Mutfwang as the duly elected governor of the State.

A three-member panel of the tribunal led by Justice Sunday dismissed the petition filed by APC and its Governorship candidate, Nentawe Yiltwatda for lacking in merit.

Similarly, the court affirmed the election of Senator Bala Mohammed as the duly elected governor of Bauchi State. The judgement was delivered by the three-man panel headed by P.T Kwahar.

The panel dismissed the petition of APC and its candidate, Sadique Abubakar, a former Chief of Air Staff, challenging the re-election of Mohammed for a second term.

DAILY POST also recalls that the PDP also retained its victory in Enugu as the tribunal upheld the election of Governor Peter Mbah.

The three-member panel of the tribunal led by Justice Kudirat Murayo dismissed the petitions of the Labour Party and its candidate, Chijioke Edeoga, insisting that they could not prove their petitions.

In Zamfara State, the tribunal dismissed the petition by the APC and its governorship candidate, Bello Matawalle, challenging the declaration of Dauda Lawal of PDP as the winner of the 18 March governorship election.

The tribunal declared that APC failed to prove the allegation of exclusion of the results from Maradun Local Government and that the election was not conducted in some wards in the State.

APC on the other hand, reclaimed power from the New Nigerian Peoples Party, NNPP, in Kano State and also retained its victory in Benue State.

In Benue, the tribunal dismissed the petition of the PDP and its governorship candidate, Titus Uba, challenging the outcome of the March 18 gubernatorial election which produced Governor Hyacinth Alia as winner.

More shocking in the recent verdicts declared by the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal in some states was the sacking of NNPP in Kano State.

In what looks like a twist of fate, the NNPP lost its only governorship seat to the ruling party in Kano as the tribunal sacked Governor Yusuf Abba and declared Nasir Gawuna of APC winner of the March 18 poll.

The three-member panel of judges led by Oluyemi Asadebay delivered the judgement on Wednesday virtually allegedly for security purposes. The court invalidated over 165,663 votes cast in favour of NNPP.

The court deducted the invalid votes stating that the ballot papers (165,663) were not stamped or signed and were therefore invalid.

The tribunal said the petitioner has proven the allegation of the invalidity of some of the votes cast on the ground that the election was not in compliance with the provision of the Electoral Act, 2022.

.ng reports that the development in Kano State has triggered palpable tension in Abia State where the ruling Party is also seeking to truncate the victory of the incumbent governor, Alex Otti of the Labour Party.

It was gathered that the Abia State Petition Election Tribunal had fixed October 6, 2023, to deliver judgement on the petition challenging the declaration of Mr Otti as winner of March 18.

The governorship candidate of APC, Chief Ikechi Emenike, had approached the court to seek the sack of Otti, over allegations of non-resignation of his membership of the ruling party before joining the Labour Party prior to the 2023 general elections.

The APC candidate also alleged that Otti’s name was not in the Labour Party register before his nomination as the party’s governorship candidate in the state.

Also joined in the petition were the candidates of the PDP, Okey Ahaiwe; the Young Progressives Party, Nana Nwafor and the Independent National Electoral Commission.

The apprehension may not be unconnected to the fact that the National Assembly Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Umuahia recently sacked three House of Representatives members elected on the platform of the Labour Party.

Abia State Chairman of the Labour Party, Mr Ceekay Igara told DAILY POST on Saturday that the ruling party is allegedly making all efforts to truncate Otti’s victory.

He said, “It is like APC has bought the court because they struck out a document and later when they were rounding up, they exhumed the case about the same document which they earlier struck out.

“Now, the judges are relying on that case and these are issues that have been settled in the appeal court.

“It is obvious that the court has already given all our seats to them. Apart from the governorship seat, they have given all the senatorial and House of Rep seats to the oppositions.”

He, however, expressed optimism that the governor would win the battle in court.

“I think he will win. One thing is certain, you cannot shave a man’s hair in his absence. They cannot judge based on any other thing apart from what was presented to them. I was also a witness in most of the cases.

“All the cases were centred on election matters before they brought the issue of NYSC. I’m sure they can’t do anything outside that,” he said.

However, in a counter reaction, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, National Publicity Secretary of PDP told newsmen that the party is expecting the sacking of Governor Otti.

According to him, PDP “presented a good case in Abia and we are expecting the tribunal to deliver a good judgement in our favour”.

Speaking on PDP’s victory in Zamfara, Bauch, Enugu and Plateau, Debo said the judgements were in line with the choices the electorates made during the election.

He said, “Like you always hear from the presidential candidate of our party, we respect the judges and their judgements so we welcome their verdicts.

“They are in line with what took place at the polling units on the day of election.

“We celebrate that because that is the will of the people.”

PoliticsKano: Tribunal Judgement Laughable – NNPP by Thonyboy(op): 6:20am On Sep 21, 2023
The New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has described the judgement of the Kano State Election Petition Tribunal, which on Wednesday sacked Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, as a miscarriage of justice.

Acting National Chairman of the party, Abba Kawu Ali, in a statement, alleged that the tribunal unjustly subtracted 165,663 votes from the party’s result in order to award victory to the APC.

“The judgement is laughable and a slap on constitutionalism,” he said.

He said the NNPP would appeal the judgement.

Ali urged all the supporters of the party and the people of the state to remain calm and law-abiding.

Recall that a three-man panel ordered the withdrawal of certificate of return, which INEC presented to Governor Yusuf, and directed a certificate of return to be issued to Yusuf Gawuna of the All Progressives Congress.

The court deducted 165,663 votes from Governor Yusuf total as invalid votes, stating that the ballot papers were not stamped or signed and therefore declared invalid.

Former Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, has reacted to the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal judgment that validated the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC’s declaration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the winner of the February 25, 2023 election.

A statement he personally signed, which was released by his media office, described the PEPT ruling as victory for democracy and the rule of law.

“The ruling is a great victory for Nigeria’s constitutional democracy and the rule of law,” he said.

According to Osinbajo, who contested the All Progressives Congress, APC primary election and came third behind Tinubu and former Transport Minister, Chibuike Amaechi, the practice of democracy in the country has been further strengthened.

“It is important to establish something we cannot basically run away from. INEC came out of this election as a damaged goods.

“There is no doubt about that. INEC itself set up a standard. INEC determined the guidelines. INEC committed to the people of Nigeria that this is how we are going to declare the result of this election.

“In fact, the Chairman of INEC went abroad and said, ‘What we are going to do is that these results, when we get it, we will put it on IReV in real-time’,” Akande said.

Akande’s comments came after the Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal (PEPT) upheld the election of President Bola Tinubu.

Apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide has appealed to Nigerian youths to resist the temptation of being used to cause chaos in the country.

The advice came as the nation awaits with anxiety the judgement of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal, today, Wednesday.

Tension is high across the country, with spears increasing that there could be protest should the judgement go against the expectation of certain persons.

Supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and that of the Labour Party, LP, want the Tribunal to sack President Bola Tinubu. But for Tinubu’s All Progressives Congress, APC, members, his victory was well deserved and should be affirmed.

In a statement made available to journalists on Tuesday, the National President of the Ohanaeze Youth group, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike pleaded with the youths not to be hoodwinked by politicians.

Okwu said there were indications that politicians would “recruit youths as usual to protest the outcome of the judgement.

“We, however, advise youths across the country to resist the temptation; it is only in times like this that politicians remember the youths. Once they get what they want, we are forgotten.

No youth should make himself a willing tool in the hands of these desperate politicians.”

He further reminded the youths that the Appeal Court was still a first instance, stressing that “whatever is the outcome is still subject to the final judgement of the Supreme Court.

“We, however, appeal to security agencies not to harass or maim any Nigerian today; rather, they should secure the lives of citizens.”

BusinessWe’re Implementing Requisite Reforms To Strengthen Telecoms Sector – NCC by Thonyboy(op): 7:46am On Sep 06, 2023
The Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, has said it remains committed to its regulatory role of continually implementing requisite reforms to strengthen the communications sector in Nigeria.

The Executive Commissioner, Stakeholder Management at the NCC, Adeleke Adewolu stated this while addressing stakeholders at the combined second and third quarters 2023 meeting of the Industry Working Groups (IWG) on multiple taxation and regulations in the telecoms sector.

The meeting, which was held in Ibadan, Oyo State on Tuesday, was convened as a precursor to a more elaborate Regional Stakeholders’ Workshop on Multiple Taxation and Regulations, scheduled to take place in the State on Wednesday.

Addressing the meeting, attended by senior executives of telecom licensees and their umbrella body, the Association of Licensed Telecom Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), Adewolu said the IWG’s activities are geared towards ensuring fair tax policies and eliminating every incident of multiple taxation and regulations impacting the Nigerian telecommunications industry negatively.

He stated that a lot of milestones have been recorded by the industry since the establishment of the IWG over two decades ago, as the platform has proven to be effective in articulating industry concerns in this area and also proffering solutions to these issues.

“Considerable industry gains have been recorded lately, particularly as it relates to the issue of multiple taxation. For instance, His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu recently signed Four Executive Orders designed to curb multiple taxation in the Country.

“Key amongst them is the Executive Order for the suspension of the five per cent Excise Duty on telecommunication services as well as Excise Duties escalation on other locally manufactured products,” he said.

He described the gains as laudable, noting that they continue to serve as inspiring landmarks for the industry, underscoring what can be achieved when the entire industry comes together harmoniously to speak with one voice on existential concerns undermining the economic health of the communications industry.

However, the Executive Commissioner said there remains a lot of work to be done as the industry was still beguiled by arbitrary Right of Way (RoW) charges, hidden nuisance taxes and unauthorised regulatory encroachment into the communications industry.

As such, he said the Commission has continued to work assiduously to ensure harmonisation of RoW charges across the country.

He said aside several existing agencies the Commission has been working with, it is also collaborating strategically with sister agencies such as the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), in line with the National Economic Council (NEC) resolution of 2012 and the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA).

“We are also working with the Nigerian Mainstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), all in a bid to ensure the regulatory actions taken by the agencies are well synchronised with the regulatory objectives of the Commission, in a manner that boosts market development and industry sustainability,” he said.

While tasking telecom licensees to continue to bring burning issues on multiple taxation and regulation to the attention of the Commission as they experience in their daily operation, Adewolu also assured them of NCC’s decision to always make necessary regulatory intervention to boost industry growth.

“The Commission is always inclined to execute the requisite reform that will strengthen the Communications Sector and deepen market development,” he said, as he urged all stakeholders at the IWG meeting to deliberate frankly and productively in highlighting pressing and key issues that require urgent attention.
