President Bola Tinubu, on Thursday, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, held a meeting with the Minister of Steel Development, Prince Shuaibu Abubakar Audu, and the Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru, during which he received a briefing on investment prospects in the steel sector. The President emphasised that a revitalised steel development industry is both a catalyst for robust economic growth and a doorway to immense opportunities for Nigeria’s massive pool of talented entrepreneurs. “We will remain unyielding in our determination to build a Nigeria where every citizen has an equal opportunity to prosper and achieve their dreams. New investments in steel production will spur the growth of so many sectors. Industrialisation will be a reality in our country with sufficient energy and steel. Nigerian steel will undergird our economy and other economies in our region in future. I am glad that members of my cabinet have adopted my approach to attracting new investments and job opportunities for our people. Hard work is the only true pathway. We will not relent,” the President stated. The ministers informed the President of their discussions with a Chinese company, Luan Steel Holding Group, to build a new steel plant in Nigeria as well as to commence the production of military hardware at the Ajaokuta Steel Plant. A delegation led by the Minister of Defence and the Minister of Steel Development visited the Hefei and Guangzhou regions of China to hold business talks with the chairman of Luan Steel Holding Group, Mr Wang Jianbing, the Chief Executive Officer of the company, Mr Xiao Weizhan, and other senior executives of Luan Steel Holding Group. The Chinese company is expected to invest billions of dollars in Nigeria to build the new steel plant. The Minister of Steel Development briefed the President, following his approval to restart the Light Steel Mill (LSM) section of the Ajaokuta Steel Complex for the production of iron rods, on the progress made on restarting the section, which will cost N35 billion at the first stage. Abia State Government has described as false, a publication on a Facebook page belonging to the Apostolic Christian Church Mission (ACCM) where it was claimed that the Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has recognised a General Overseer for the Church. The State government also denied the claims that the Governor approved the Church’s annual convention. In a press statement by Keneth C. Wiper, the Special Assistant on religious matters to Governor Alex Otti, Saturday evening, the State government made it clear that Governor Otti had no role in selecting anyone as the General Overseer of ACCM. “Let it be known to all and sundry that His Excellency, Dr. Alex Otti, has neither approved the lifting of the ban earlier placed on the 2024 annual convention nor endorsed anyone as General Overseer. “It is important to state categorically that the Governor has no role in selecting leadership for the Church, or any church for that matter. “Government wishes to state that its interest in the ACCM matter is only to ensure against the breakdown of law and order, sequel to the unhealthy leadership tussle going on in the church,” Wiper said. .ng recalls that ACCM has been having a leadership tussle in the past two years, with different factions laying claims to the General Overseer position. Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State has urged his Rivers counterpart, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, to take measures that would help restore peace in Rivers to ensure speedy development. Diri advised on Thursday when Fubara, accompanied by top government functionaries, visited him in his country home in Sampou, Kolokuma-Opokuma Local Government Area. NAN reported that it was Fubara’s first official visit to Bayelsa since he assumed office on May 29, 2023. Diri described the importance of peace in any area as unquantifiable, saying that no meaningful development could take place in an atmosphere of crisis. He said that Rivers and Bayelsa had a long-standing brotherly relationship and whatever affects one also affects the other. He said that he had been concerned about the political crisis in Rivers and had worked behind the scenes to ensure peace returned to the state. He cautioned against giving ethnic colouration to the crisis, saying that the Ikwerre of Rivers and the Ijaw of both Rivers and Bayelsa are one. He further said that they could not afford to fight each other as it would amount to “a senseless battle between brothers.” The Bayelsa governor also advised Fubara to be tolerant and patient while focusing on delivering development to the people of his state. While expressing willingness to forge closer ties with the Rivers governor in the interest of both states, Diri welcomed Fubara’s olive branch to find an amicable solution to the legal crisis between both states. https://.ng/2024/01/04/diri-hosts-fubara-sues-for-peace-in-rivers/

A member of the National Working Committee, NWC, of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Timothy Osadolor, has said the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike is technically no longer a member of the party. Osadolor cautioned Nigerians against taking Wike seriously because he “double-speaks” on issues. Speaking with Trust TV, the PDP Deputy National Youth leader, said, “The truth is that Wike has technically left the PDP. When last did you see him in any PDP function? “To say that Wike is no longer a member of the party, especially when he has also claimed leadership of the APC in his state, is just over-flogging what is already obvious. “No matter how he continues to say that he is a member of the PDP, the reality on ground and his actions state something else. “I think Nigerians should not take him too seriously because the man is given to double-speaking. Wike has left the party, and that is the truth.” The activities of Wike have been questioned prior to the 2023 general elections. Wike had allegedly worked against the 2023 PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar during the election. He allegedly pitched his tent with President Bola Tinubu and eventually gained an appointment as the FCT Minister. Aggrieved by his activities, PDP’s acting Chairman, Umar Damagum had threatened to sanction him soon. https://.ng/2023/12/30/wike-technically-left-pdp-double-speaks-on-issues-nwc-member-osadolor/

Former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Mr Godwin Emefiele has disclosed that the naira redesign was a directive from one of ex-President Muhammadu Buhari’s former aide. Emefiele said the former presidential aide gave him the directive in September 2022 during his visit to the Presidential Villa in Abuja. This was contained in a report by the Special Investigator on CBN and Related Entities, Jim Obazee which was submitted to President Bola Tinubu. Tinubu had commissioned Obaze to investigate the CBN operations under Emefiele. Recall that CBN under Emefiele had redesigned N1,000, N500, N200 and N100 notes. Explaining why the naira denomination was redesigned, Buhari had said the need to fight corruption and insecurity headlong, including controlling inflationary trend partly necessitated the decision to redesign the currency denominations. Obaze’s report reads partly: “The Naira Redesign was not approved by the Board of CBN and President Muhammadu Buhari in accordance with the law. Buhari only tagged along. Sometimes in September 2022, the erstwhile Governor of the CBN claimed that during his visit to the Presidential Villa, one of the presidential aides told him to go and consider redesigning the Naira. “On 6th of October, 2022, Emefiele wrote Buhari seeking approval to redesign and reconfigure N1,000, N500, N200 and N100 notes. Buhari approved the proposal same day. But Buhari approved the currency be printed in Nigeria. “On that 6th October 2022, former President Muhammadu Buhari approved Emefiele’s request and directed that he should redesign and reconfigure the four denominations of the Naira notes as prayed, but should print them locally. “Emefiele did not consult with the management of the CBN or seek any recommendation from the Board of the CBN as required by Section 19 of the CBN Act, 2007. “Emefiele did not seek the recommendation of the Board of the CBN nor revert to former President Muhammadu Buhari to inform him nor seek his presidential approval for the new redesigns and the fact that he is now recommending only three denominations “Emefiele took the redesigns, a mere change of colour to De La Rue in UK for a fee of £205,000. Only N1,000, N500 and N200 notes were redesigned.” https://.ng/2023/12/22/cbn-buharis-ex-aide-directed-emefiele-to-redesign-naira-notes-report/
