The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) on Monday said it had destroyed expired and substandard goods worth N7 million in Bauchi State. SON Zonal Director, Northeast Zone, Adamu Abba, said during the exercise in Bauchi that destroying the expired and substandard goods was to ensure that only quality goods were sold to citizens. He said the exercise was in collaboration with the Bauchi State Environmental Protection Agency to ensure that all the food and non-food items seized were destroyed in the most environmentally friendly way. “This is to protect the lives and property of citizens as well as to save the environment. “The products destroyed include beverages, cosmetics, mayonnaise, peak milk, and agrochemicals, among others,” he said. The zonal director reiterated that the fight against substandard products was a collective responsibility of all. He appealed to members of the public to report any suspicious substandard product in the market to the office of SON. Abba commended traders and artisans associations for their cooperation as they voluntarily reported most of the expired products to the organisation for proper action. Also speaking, the state coordinator of the organisation, Murtala Sa’ad, noted that the feat was achieved as a result of the commitment and expertise exhibited by his personnel through their weekly market survey. “This resulted in the seizure of the expired, substandard and unbranded products from various shops in Bauchi,” he said. He warned traders to desist from sharp practices, saying the organisation would not relent in hunting defaulters and ensuring that they faced the full wrath of the law. Sa’ad advised members of the public to always check for expiry dates of products before using them to safeguard their health. https://.ng/2023/10/09/son-destroys-substandard-goods-worth-n7m-in-bauchi/

The acting Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adewale Adeniyi, has assured residents of border communities that efforts are ongoing to resume the supply of petroleum products in their areas soon. .ng recalls that former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration in 2019 banned the supply of petroleum products to border communities. An order from the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) stopped filling stations within 20 km from the borders from receiving or dispensing fuel. The directive was carried out under Operation Swift Response, which supervised the land border closure of the Buhari administration, purposely to stop the illegal bunkering of the then-subsidised fuel to neighbouring countries. Since 2019, people living in border areas have been subjected to hardship as they travel 20 km to get fuel for their generators, especially in the face of erratic power supply. With the removal of fuel subsidy by President Bola Tinubu, border communities have been crying for a review of the Buhari policy. According to them, the ban on fuel supply in border communities is no longer justified because the government no longer subsidises petrol. During his recent visit to Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, the acting Comptroller General of Customs told newsmen the policy might be reviewed in a matter of a few days. Adebiyi told newsmen: “On fuel supply in border communities, we are actively monitoring the situation. If you remember, there was a resolution by the Senate about two or three weeks ago expressing the same concern. We also have a shared understanding about this. “We have made our position known to the National Security Adviser and we are hoping that in the next few days, there might be a review of this policy.” https://.ng/2023/10/09/supply-of-petrol-to-border-communities-returns-in-few-days-customs-cg/

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has disclosed that it has detained eight officers for assaulting a man accused of stealing manhood of two people in Abuja. Director of Public Relations of NSCDC, Babawale Afolabi, made this declaration while speaking with newsmen on Sunday. .ng reports that a man accused of stealing manhood of two people was seen in a video being assaulted and beaten by some NSCDC officials. The incident occurred at NSCDC headquarters, located in the Sauka area in Abuja. In the video, the man was seen being slapped several times and hit with sticks and hard objects by the NSCDC officials. The man’s face was swollen, and blood was gushing out during the incident. Advocacy for Alleged Witches (AfWA) in its reaction, enjoined the Nigerian government to arrest and prosecute the officers who assaulted the man. AfWA Director, Dr. Leo Igwe in a statement made available to DAILY POST on Saturday described the incident as a sad development. Igwe in the statement insisted that the officers acted unprofessionally and against the law, adding that the erring officers did not make efforts to confirm the allegations against the suspect. Igwe said, “Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) officers assaulted a man for allegedly stealing manhood of two other men at the national headquarters of the security organization in Sauka in Abuja. In a video that was circulated on social media, officers of the NSCDC could be seen beating and brutalizing this man commanding him to ‘return it’ (manhood). “To this end, the Advocacy for Alleged Witches calls on the government to arrest and prosecute all NSCDC officers who assaulted this innocent man in the video. The government should ensure that these officers answer for their crimes. It was painful and heartbreaking to watch as officers hit, kicked, and maltreated a man they were trained and paid to protect and defend”. Afolabi while speaking with newsmen, noted that all the 8 officers who were on duty when the incident occurred have been detained. He added that all the officers are currently facing disciplinary action at the headquarters of the organisation. He said, “It is a case of missing private part and it happened at Sauka and one of our officers was around when they were about to move him so as not to kill him. But, the mistake they made was that they put laws into their hands, they beat the guy in the premises instead of bringing him to the office for interrogation. “We are on top of the matter sir and as I am talking to you, the 8 officers are already in detention and the commandant general has came up with a disciplinary committee to investigate the case and the 8 officers on duty then. “At NSCDC, we are fully committed. You know that out of 30 eggs there will always be a bad one. As I am talking to you they are facing disciplinary action and we are still carrying out investigation on the matter”. https://.ng/2023/10/08/nscdc-detain-8-officers-for-assaulting-man-accused-of-stealing-manhood-in-abuja/

The Court of Appeal has set aside the judgement of the National and State Houses of Assembly Election Petition Tribunal which voided the election of Umar Mukhtari Zakari, the candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), for Tarauni Federal Constituency, Kano State. A three-member panel of the court, in a judgment on Saturday in Abuja, upheld that arguments by lawyer to Zakari and the NNPP, Mahmud Magaji (SAN) that the tribunal erred in law in reaching its decision. In the lead judgment by Justice Obande Ogbuinya, the Court of Appeal held that the tribunal was wrong to have concluded the Zakari forged his credentials when the petitioners failed to establish their claim to that effect. Zakari was declared winner of the election held on February 25, which Ibrahim Hafiz Kawu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) challenged with a petition dated March 17, 2023. The petitioners had claimed that Zakari purportedly forged the Housawa Special Primary School certificate which he presented to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on the grounds that the name on it was simply “Muktar Umar.” The Court of Appeal, in its judgment on Saturday, held that the respondents, who were petitioners at the tribunal, failed to prove that Zakari was not the same person who attended the school and was awarded the certificate. It proceeded to set aside the judgement of the tribunal, allowed the appeal and affirmed Zakari’s election. https://.ng/2023/10/07/appeal-court-reverses-sack-of-kano-nnpp-house-of-reps-member-zakari/

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has said that it is unfazed by allegations made against President Bola Tinubu by former Vice President and candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the last election, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar earlier on Thursday. The APC claimed that Atiku harbours deep animosity towards Tinubu because, according to them, he believes Tinubu was responsible for his electoral woes in 2007, 2015, 2019 and this year. .ng reports that Atiku in a press conference in Abuja made several allegations against Tinubu, which were based on the documents he obtained from the Chicago State University. The APC, in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, said that Atiku delivered nothing except the pitiful regurgitation of lies, mindless distortions and deliberate falsehood on his infantile obsession with the academic record of Tinubu The party said that Atiku has been out there for several weeks now, displaying utter desperation in his bid to become the President of Nigeria. The APC said that Atiku’s press conference was a calculated attempt to whip up public sentiments and inordinately pressure the Supreme Court. “We believe Alhaji Atiku Abubakar should have known better than to demonstrate gross contempt of the highest court by making public comments on a matter that he has submitted to the court for adjudication “The major takeaway from his Yar’Adua Centre show, especially at question time, was that Atiku harbours deep animosity towards Tinubu, whom he believes was responsible for his electoral woes in 2007, 2015, 2019 and this year. “Furthermore, he stated that the ‘F’ on the Southwest college certificate, a feeder institution to CSU, which President Bola Tinubu used to gain admission into CSU was a clerical error, which could of course happen. “He reiterated that Southwest College was a major feeder source for CSU. He said the person admitted based on the transcript from South West College, was a male Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Westberg also added the courses taken by President Bola Tinubu at Southwest College were consistent with the courses he took at CSU. “Westberg further deposed that Accounting is a rigorous field of study. Anyone who did not take the requisite courses at the lower levels could not have done well at CSU. “In President Tinubu’s case, he did excellently well at CSU. He graduated with High Honours. That to him point to the fact that the person who attended and graduated from CSU was the same person who went to Southwest College “He pointed out that CSU has had at least six Registrars since 1979 and in an affidavit at an Illinois court prior to the deposition said ‘Chicago State University provided a diploma to Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and subsequently provided a certified (or official) copy of that diploma. Both are valid and authentic diplomas of Chicago State University’ ‘He said further that the difference in the date of award on the diploma versus the certified copy is likely the result of human error. The graduation date on the certified copy is typed in manually by a person and can be inaccurate.’ “Westberg noted that by practice, CSU does not replace certificates for students as they are issued by 3rd party vendors which is also a common practice by other US universities. The proof of attendance and graduation remains the transcripts. “There is also no part of Mr. Westberg’s deposition where he said that the certificate President Bola Tinubu presented to INEC for his election is fake or was forged. “All the insinuations and innuendos in this regard are pure mischief and should be disregarded. President Tinubu could not have forged a University degree he honourably earned because there is no advantage to derive from such and no incentive to do so. “In desperation, unbecoming of a statesman who once occupied the second highest office in the land, the PDP candidate in the last election has thrown every decency, decorum, dignity and national respectability out the window on his purposeless judicial voyage of discovery to the United States in search of a magic wand for taking power against the will of the Nigerian electorate loudly expressed in last February’s presidential election. “Alhaji Atiku Abubakar holds the unenviable title of Nigeria’s most prolific election loser and longest running presidential candidate in history, and we see his recent US fishing expedition as the last kick of a roundly rejected presidential aspirant. “While we sympathise with Alhaji Atiku Abubakar for spending a lifetime pursuing an unrealised dream, we strongly condemn the perfidious road he has taken and the needless negative exposure of Nigeria and the institution of the Presidency in foreign land. “Just for the record, we wish to provide some clarity on the matter of the deposition of Mr. Caleb Westberg, the Registrar of Chicago State University, last Tuesday under oath at the Chicago office of Atiku’s lawyer, Angela Liu, to save unsuspecting Nigerians from barrage of untruths, distortions and campaign of misinformation being dished out by Atiku and his PDP Mr. Westberg was unmistaken and unambiguous in his deposition as to the fact that President Bola Tinubu graduated with honours from Chicago State University. He also emphatically provided clear answers on all other issues raised which we can sum as follows: 1. That the person who is Nigeria’s president, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is the same person who attended Chicago State University. “He confirmed that a certain gentleman called Adeniji who had come forward to say he was Tinubu’s classmate was in fact a student at CSU at the same time and they both ran for student union positions. “Mr. Westberg said the diploma certificate, on which the PDP and Atiku seek to gaslight Nigerians and the whole world, is just a ceremonial document and what proved studentship at Chicago State University and in any American university is transcript, not certificate. “It should now be clear to all Nigerians that despite Atiku’s lies before the Illinois Court that he wanted to use the discoveries in pursuit of his appeal at the Supreme Court, he has rather chosen to use same as an instrument of mischief and blackmail in clear contempt of the highest court of the land.” https://.ng/2023/10/06/alleged-forgery-why-atiku-hates-tinubu-so-much-apc-fires-back/

The Delta State Police Command has said a 14-year-old suspect, Gift Peace, who was arrested in connection to a robbery case in the state, confessed that he started the criminal act when he was seven. The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Edafe Bright, who made this known in a statement on the command’s X handle on Wednesday, said Gift was arrested following a distress call received at the ‘B’ Division Warri on September 29. He explained that a police undercover operative sighted one of the suspects during their robbery operation at the Giwamu junction Warri and trailed him to a suya spot at Enerhen Junction, where he was nabbed. He said the robbery gang engaged the officers of the command in a gun battle, leading to the death of one of the suspected leaders of the gang. The statement reads partly, “The teenager confessed to being a member of an armed robbery gang that terrorizes Warri and its environs and that he has been in the act since he was seven (7) years old. He mentioned other members and thus took the detectives to their hideout. “The gang members, upon sighting the police, opened fire from their unregistered operational tricycle, and due response was given to their hostility. In the process, one of the suspects, who was later identified as the leader of the gang, sustained serious gunshot injuries while others escaped. “He was taken to the hospital, where he was eventually confirmed dead by the doctor. The exhibit recovered includes the following: the operational tricycle of the gang, one locally made cut-to-size single barrel gun with stocked expended cartridges, and three live cartridges. “Two male gang members, Idigbe Osreis (19) and Idigbe Perfect (16), were later arrested at their hideout. Efforts are ongoing to arrest the fleeing members and also to recover more of their operational arms. “The Delta State Commissioner of Police CP Wale Abass, while emphasizing the necessity of adequate parenting as an essentiality in the fight against crime, advices that parents should be alive to their responsibilities, and safeguard the future of their wards by monitoring and teaching them valuable precautionary lessons that will help them avoid bad companies and hence stay away from criminal activities. https://.ng/2023/10/04/delta-police-arrest-teenage-suspect-who-began-robbery-at-seven/

The Chicago State University, CSU, has released the school documents of President Bola Tinubu to the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Atiku Abubakar. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Thursday arraigned the Chief Executive Officer of Emee Oil And Gas Nig. Ltd., Florence Onojame, who allegedly defrauded Access Bank of N4.4 billion. NAN reports that Onojame appeared before an Ikeja Special Offences Court alongside her company on a three-count charge of conspiracy, stealing and receiving fraudulently obtained property. The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge. EFCC counsel, Mr Fatai Mohammed, thereafter prayed to the court for a trial date and remand of the defendant. Mohammed told the court the defendant committed the offences with four others at large sometime in February 2022 in Lagos. The counsel said that the defendant stole N4.4 billion, which she fraudulently transferred via Primus Plus, an electronic banking platform of Access Bank, using her company’s login details. He added that the defendant further transferred the sum into several accounts domiciled with the bank. The prosecution counsel further submitted that the defendant retained the control of N100 million in her Access Bank account with the name of her company and transferred the sum from Total Energy Nig. Ltd. account, knowing the same to be proceeds of criminal activities. Defence counsel Mr Williams Onate, however, informed the court that a bail application for his client had been filed before the court and served on the prosecution. “We will be praying for a short adjournment for hearing of the bail application and that the defendant be ordered to remain in the custody of the EFCC,” Onate said. According to EFCC, the alleged offences contravene Sections 278, 326 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. Justice Mojisola Dada ordered that the defendant should be kept at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre pending the hearing of her bail application. Dada adjourned the case until Oct. 10 for a hearing of the bail application. https://.ng/2023/09/29/efcc-arraigns-oil-firm-ceo-for-allegedly-defrauding-bank-n4-4bn/

The Command gave the order through its Public Relations Office, ASP Sani Kamilu Shatambaya in a statement made available to newsmen. According to the statement, the measure is in compliance with the directives of the Acting Inspector General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun to curb proliferation of dangerous weapons. The Command in the statement assured the citizenry, especially those in possession of the weapons, that such voluntary surrender will not attract any sanction from the police. “This is aimed at reducing the number of guns in circulation across the State, and to stop firearms from getting into the wrong hands and being used by offenders to commit crimes on our streets or anywhere else in the country, hence keeping the State safe for all”, he said. The Command warned that perpetrators who refused to render their arms would not be spared but would face the full wrath of the law when caught. “Anyone found in possession of a firearm of any type – be it a pistol, rifle, air weapon, or imitation (i.e. locally made guns, dummy guns, etc), shall be arrested and prosecuted for unlawful possession of firearm”, it warned. https://.ng/2023/09/25/borno-surrender-illegal-weapons-or-face-sanction-police-warn-suspects/
