A 31-year-old church worker, James Rich, has been arrested for impregnating a 14-year-old girl. The man, who described himself as a yardman, works in St Michaels and All Angels Anglican Church, Ifite Awka, Anambra, where he also resides with his family. He was said to have been arrested by officials of the Anambra State Ministry of Women’s Affairs in collaboration with police operatives. According to a press release and video sent out by Chidinma Ikeanyionwu, the media aide of the Commissioner for Women’s Affairs, Hon Ify Obinabo, Rich lured the teenage girl to the church toilet shortly before the commencement of church service and had canal knowledge of her, after which he gave her N200 to buy her self something. The release by Ikeanyionwu stated that: “James Rich from Cross River State, but resident in Awka, Anambra State, is a yardman at St Michaels and All Angels Anglican Church, Ifite Awka. “The suspect accepted to have defiled the 14 year old and impregnated her in the process. He explained that he usually does so every Sunday morning at the church premises, and that he has had carnal knowledge of her for about three times after which he gives her the sum of N200 to buy biscuit.” She stated that the suspect disclosed that he was married with two children and expecting the third and that he lives in the church premises where he carries out his daily activities taking care of the church compound. “He pleaded for pardon stating that this is his first time of committing the crime and that it was temptation that made him do so.” On her part, the victim stated that she always comes for the 6:30 am service, but she arrives very early, and on each occasion, the suspect takes her to the church toilet for sex before service commences. She denied that she had ever been forced by Rich for sex. Reacting to the incident, Obinabo, who spoke through her Special Assistant, Mrs Blessing Nweke, disclosed that the case will be charged to court immediately to get justice for the girl. https://.ng/2023/11/16/church-worker-arrested-for-impregnating-teenager-after-having-sex-in-toilet/

The Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the Centre for Human Rights and Anti-Corruption Crusade (CHURAC), Ebikonbowei Alaowei, has urged the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) to end its ongoing nationwide strike for the sake of the suffering masses, including Nigerian workers. Alaowei made this appeal in a statement made available to .ng. He stated that there is no justification for the Labour Union to shut down the country due to the personal conflict between its President, the Governor of Imo State, and the Nigeria Police. Alaowei stated, “Those who will be at the receiving end of this strike action are the same underpaid Nigerian workers and the unemployed masses. “Neither the Governor of Imo State, His Excellency, Sen. Hope Uzodimma, nor the former Commissioner of Police in Imo State will be affected by this strike action. What will the workers stand to gain at the end of this needless strike? “The NLC President, whom the police attacked on the alleged order of Governor Uzodimma, should seek redress in court. “This strike action is uncalled for. You can’t drag the entire country into your personal matter with government officials. The NLC and the TUC should respect the sanctity of the courts. “There’s a pending court order restraining the bodies from embarking on this industrial action. We’re in a constitutional democracy, and the foundation of democracy is anchored on the rule of law. Without the courts, there’s no rule of law. “Therefore, an order of the court must be obeyed by every individual, no matter your position in society. If the labour unions are not comfortable with the order, then they should appeal against it instead of disobeying the order.” https://.ng/2023/11/15/group-begs-nlc-tuc-to-call-off-strike/

A former Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Timi Frank, has said Nigerians should not expect free, fair, transparent and credible elections in 2027 under the administration of President Bola Tinubu and the APC. Frank, in a statement issued Tuesday, said the level of alleged electoral fraud, manipulation and rigging witnessed in Kogi and Imo states points to the fact that no credible result can come out from future exercises. He also alleged that security agencies that were meant to protect voters and arrest riggers also took part in the rigging. Frank stressed that the police and other security agencies are now a security department in the APC. “The election has nothing to write home about, and to imagine that it was the first set of elections conducted under the watch of President Tinubu. What happened in Imo and Kogi is a clear indication of the kind of elections Nigerians will witness in 2027. “Our electoral system is presently in dire straits under our highly compromised Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which has now graduated from rigging by manipulating the INEC Result View (IReV) portal and the Bi-Modal Voter Accreditation System (BIVAS) to writing results of polling units before the people cast their ballot,” he said. Frank said the judiciary, which he claimed had become APC’s legal department, would legalise whatever the INEC had done. https://.ng/2023/11/14/dont-expect-credible-elections-in-2027-under-apc-tinubu-timi-frank-tells-nigerians/

The Presidency has described the nationwide strike action by the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress as not in the national interest. Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, disclosed this in a statement on Monday. .ng reports that the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress on Monday directed all its members to withdraw their services nationwide from Tuesday over an assault on the President of NLC, Joe Ajaero, in Imo State. However, the presidency said the strike action by the unions was a flagrant disobedience to a court order and a lack of respect for the judiciary. Accordingly, the government expressed displeasure that the nation’s economy and social activities should not suffer because of the personal interests of any labour leader. “This decision by the NLC and TUC, other than being an ego-tripping move, is unwarranted. It is an attempt to blackmail the government by the leadership of the NLC. “We are still at a loss as to why the NLC and TUC decided to punish a whole country of over 200 million people over a personal matter involving the NLC President, Mr. Joe Ajaero, whose error of judgment led to an assault on him in Owerri while he was planning to incite the workers in Imo State into a needless strike. “We reiterate that this strike action is illegal, immoral, unjustifiable, and irresponsible,” the statement reads. .ng reports that a court order was issued four days ago, which restrained the unions from embarking on a strike. The court order came days after NLC, TUC issued a nationwide strike notice over an assault on Joe Ajaero, the president of NLC, on November 1, 2023, in Imo State. .ng gathered that the nation is already in darkness as electricity workers shut down the national grid around 11:20 pm on Monday in compliance with the NLC’s directive. https://.ng/2023/11/14/nlc-tuc-indefinite-strike-not-in-national-interest-presidency/

The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has urged residents of Imo State to disregard the sit-at-home order on election day (Saturday) and instead come out in large numbers to cast their votes for their chosen candidates during the governorship poll. Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, issued the call in a statement made available to NAN on Thursday in Enugu. Iwuanyanwu said he was informed that some individuals were threatening to prevent Imo residents from voting by imposing a complete sit-at-home order from November 9 to 12. He said, “As the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, I wish to appeal to all the Imo people to turn out en masse to cast their votes for any candidate of their choice. “If Imo people comply with this, there will be no election in the state and that will create chaos. “I am, therefore, with every sense of responsibility and love, appealing to the leader of this group to rescind his decision to order a sit-at-home”. Iwuanyanwu stated that he had found it very necessary to sound the notice and warning because Igboland had had enough bloodshed. According to him, Igbo people fought a civil war which took the lives of millions of their people and also caused incalculable losses in property. “We do not want a situation whereby any part of Igboland will be exposed to any type of destructive violence. “As a father, I prefer a peaceful resolution of all problems. I prefer a non-kinetic approach. It is my belief that all disputes are best resolved over a round-table dialogue. “Bloodshed and destruction of our property cannot be a solution,” Iwuanyanwu appealed. “I will once more appeal to all those concerned to consider it a patriotic duty to rescind the call for a total sit-at-home and also the directive for instant murder of people who violate the sit-at-home order. “The information reaching Ohaneze Ndigbo is that a directive has been issued for some homes to be destroyed. I want to believe that this is an ordinary rumour because it is not in our character,” he said. https://.ng/2023/11/10/imo-election-ignore-sit-at-home-order-on-saturday-ohanaeze-urges-residents/

Barely five days before the November 11 governorship elections in Imo State, the governorship candidate of the Labour Party, Senator Athan Achonu, was allegedly attacked in the state. Achonu’s convoy was attacked on his way to St Peter’s Anglican Church, Obibiezena in Owerri North Local Government Area, where he was invited to attend the church’s synod. It was gathered that his convoy allegedly ran into an ambush laid by some thugs, who had mounted a roadblock with an Armored Personnel Carrier (APC), an All Progressive Congress-branded Sienna, and a Hilux truck. In a statement signed by Chibuikem Diala, the Director, Media and Publicity to Senator Athan Achonu Campaign Organisation, made available to .ng in Owerri, Achonu said the tragedy was averted when the convoy of the Labour Party candidate for Saturday’s governorship election in Imo State, Senator Athan Achonu, escaped death by the whiskers. The release reads, “One Oladimeji, a police officer attached to the Tiger Base Police Squad, Owerri, led the team of rough-looking policemen and gun-wielding Ebubeagu security operatives. “On approaching the roadblock, police officers in the Armoured Personnel Carrier started shooting at the convoy but missed the Wrangler SUV by the whiskers and hit the driver’s window of one of the bulletproof Lexus SUVs in the convoy. This could have resulted in a casualty if not for the fact that it was bulletproof. “They were shooting sporadically in full public glare in broad daylight. Even after the Police Commissioner spoke to the police officer Oladimeji over the phone, he refused to listen to him, insisting that because Uzodinma was coming that way, he would not allow Achonu to pass. “A young man identified as ‘TAKPE,’ backed by the police, was also shouting and threatening that the team must turn back, or else he would “destroy all the cars.” This scenario caused so much panic among the women in the convoy. “To avoid further confrontation, the DSS and other security officers accompanying Senator Achonu exercised restraint and moved the candidate and his team to safety. “It is sadder that the state police have sold themselves to Uzodinma to the point that even the state commissioner of police no longer has the power to control security matters in the state. “We demand an urgent probe into the activities of the involved culprits, including Officer Ola, and the state commissioner of police. We also demand that the chief thug ‘Takpe’ shown in the viral video be arrested and brought to book. “We also demand the immediate transfer of all compromised officers to avoid crises. We also want to make it abundantly clear that the Labour Party and its candidate, Senator Athan Achonu, alongside all lovers of democracy in Imo State, cannot be intimidated. “We call on President Bola Tinubu, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, the Chief of Army Staff, the Head of the Department of State Services, DSS, and relevant security agencies to weigh into the security situation in Imo State to avert bloodshed during and after Saturday’s election.” https://.ng/2023/11/06/imo-guber-lp-candidate-achonu-escapes-death-as-thugs-allegedly-open-fire-on-his-convoy/

The Network Against Corruption and Trafficking, NACAT, has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory to investigate the Executive Director, Procurement of the Federal Capital Territory Administration, FCTA, Mr. Onsachi Musa Idris, for allegedly owning and running private companies while in active service against extant rules. In a statement signed by NACAT’s Executive Director of Investigation, Oghenedoro Tega in Abuja on Sunday, the group accused Idris of alleged violation of public rules and abuse of office. NACAT said findings shows that Idris did not declare his companies to the Code of Conduct Bureau as stipulated by the law. The statement said, “NACAT’s findings revealed that Onsachi Musa Idris, the Executive Director, Procurement, of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), and some of his members have interest as directors in the companies, “Hollywood Films, Television and Creative Arts Institute Limited – RC 1280962 – registered on 14th August 2015 and El-Meela Heritage International School Limited – RC – 1282658, registered on 24th August 2015, but he did not declare them in his Assets and Liabilities Declaration Forms with the Code of Conduct Bureau, in compliance with the law. “Paragraph 1(1) of Part 1 of the 5th Schedule to the 1999 Constitution, as amended, mandates public office holders whether elected, appointed, recruited, contracted etc., by whatever name called to file their assets and liabilities declaration forms/returns with the Code of Conduct Bureau in respect of themselves, spouse and children under the age of 18 years and above. “The CCB Act also states that: “Every Public Officer is to NOTE that it is the requirement of the Law to declare his/her assets/liabilities on (a) Assumption of office; (b) At the end of his term of Office, (c). At interval of four years for Public Officers on continuous employment of Government whether Federal, State or Local Government: (d) and at such other intervals as the Bureau may determine from time to time. “Also, Section 172 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) enjoins all persons in the public service to conform to the Code of Conduct. The Fifth Schedule (Part 1) (Section 5) of the Constitution says that; “A public officer shall not put himself in a position where his personal interest conflicts with his duties and responsibilities. “By not declaring the company, it is our believe that Mr. Idris may have used his influence to interfere with the procurement procedures and processes thereby influencing contracts to the company and denying other companies of fair processes. “The group further threatened to take legal action if the right authorities failed to probe Mr. Idris for the alleged offence. “As an NGO with a mandate to fight corruption and various anti-corruption war to our credit, we are concerned that such an official would be allowed to continue in the service without appropriate investigative action and/or punitive actions taken against him. “That is why we are calling on the relevant agencies to begin probe of the director.” NACAT particularly asked the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, to immediately suspend Idris from office pending the investigation of its allegation to forestall hiding of information that will be relevant to the case. “We do not understand how a director will owns a school as well as another company and instead of resigning from his FG job to face his private businesses, he chose to run it side by side. Hence Idris should not be spared for violating the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, ” NACAT stated. https://.ng/2023/11/05/alleged-abuse-of-office-nacat-asks-efcc-icpc-wike-to-probe-fcta-director/

The Court of Appeal sitting in Lagos State has sacked Denis Agbo, the member elected on the platform of the Labour Party in the last election. The court removed Agbo, who was representing the Udenu/Igboeze North federal constituency of Enugu State, and ordered a fresh election within 90 days. The court, delivering its judgement on Friday via Zoom, ruled on the appeal of All Progressives Congress candidate, Dr Oby Ajih, mandating the Independent National Electoral Commission to conduct a fresh election for all parties involved. Ajih had approached the appellate court, challenging the ruling of the tribunal that the election did not follow the right process as the logo of her party wasn’t in the EC8A form. The appeal court, in a judgement that lasted less than 30 minutes, agreed that the appeal had merit and set aside the judgement of the tribunal. Details of the meeting between the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors Forum have emerged. Recall that following the political crisis that erupted in Rivers State on Sunday night, the PDP governors paid the former governor a courtesy visit on Wednesday. Wike, during the meeting held in Abuja, assured the governors that he is still a member of the main opposition party, adding that he was in the FCT to help President Bola Tinubu achieve his Renewed Hope Agenda. The PDP Governors Forum was led by its chairman, Senator Bala Muhammed, who also thanked Tinubu for appointing Wike as the FCT minister. The minister also applauded Tinubu’s efforts to resolve the political crisis in Rivers State. He said, “I commend President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and also the PDP Governors’ Forum for stepping in to resolve the issues. It takes mature minds to be able to do that.” The minister, however, accused his detractors of being behind the issues in the state and vowed that he would not be intimidated by propaganda on social media, as such would not dissuade him from doing what is right. The minister also thanked the forum for the visit and assured that he would continue to work for the president to realize his agenda to renew the hope of the citizenry. Speaking earlier, Senator Mohammed commended the appointment of Wike as the FCT Minister by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, saying it was a demonstration of the president’s bipartisan leadership style in the country Mohammed, who was once the FCT Minister, said, “At the risk of being accused of flattery, we really appreciate Mr President and Nyesom Wike. Again, giving him this office at the FCT, which is like a state, in spite of the fact that he is still one of us as a PDP member, has shown the kind of leadership that Mr President has.” While noting that Wike’s antecedents made him deserving of recognition by the president, Mohammed urged the FCT Minister to continue to dispense his onerous responsibility to the President, assuring that the PDP was fully in support of his God-given bipartisan responsibility He said, “We are proud of this dual and multifarious position that you have assumed. You are growing in your pedigree. Even though you contested elections with me at the primaries, I know your pedigree has risen very high. We are sure you are going to make positive contributions to the growth and development of the country, especially at this level, given your antecedents in Rivers State.”. Speaking on the political situation in Rivers State, Mohammed, who described the issues as a family affair of the PDP, said they have been resolved by the party, adding that Rivers State is an important economic enclave of the country, hence the interest of the president and all stakeholders in resolving the issues. He commended the minister’s maturity in the face of the crisis while applauding his immense contributions to the growth of Rivers State and the PDP. Also present at the meeting were Governors Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State, Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State and Kefas Agbu of Taraba State. https://.ng/2023/11/02/rivers-crisis-details-of-wikes-meeting-with-pdp-governors-in-abuja-emerge/

A lawyer, activist and Pan-Africanist, Chetam Thierry Nwala has alleged that the political unrest in Rivers State followed unfulfillable demands by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike. The activist, who soike on Arise Television on Tuesday, alleged that the refusal of Governor Siminalayi Fubara to remit 25 per cent of the state’s allocation to Wike, his immediate predecessor, caused the ongoing face-off. He alleged that Wike demanded that 25 per cent of all allocations coming into the state should be given to him. Nwala also alleged that Wike demanded N2 billion from the N5 billion recently disbursed by the Federal Government to the states as part of palliatives to cushion the effect of the fuel subsidy removal. According to the Pan-Africanist, most of the governor’s aides, including commissioners and Chief Security Officer, were appointed by the FCT Minister. He said, “Wike demanded 25% of Rivers State allocations. From what we heard, the governor even offered to give him 10%. This is what is happening in our state. “Not just that, we had a situation where Wike appointed almost all the commissioners, appointed a Chief Security Officer for the governor. These are personal things that should be of concern to the governor. These are things that should make him revolt. “We have seen a situation where even the commissioners appointed by Wike disrespect the governor. Naturally, everybody will revolt. You don’t expect the governor to stick to any agreement made before the election. “If the governor continues with the agenda Wike has for Rivers State, the state will not make progress. Wike took Rivers State 10 years backwards. “Let me also shock you, out of the N5 billion palliative money that was sent to Rivers State, Wike demanded N2 billion from it.
