Police said that no ransom was paid and the two Germans were freed after being kidnapped in Kaduna state. Now DW has exclusive information on arrests. Nigeria entführte deutsche Archäologen wieder frei (picture alliance/AP Photo/L. Oyekanmi) Nigeria's Defense Secretary Mansur Dan Ali told DW on Thursday that the suspected kidnappers had been arrested. "They have been detained. The police chief mentioned that when he was briefing us on improved security in southern Kaduna State," he said. The identity of the suspects has not been disclosed. The two Germans had been abducted on Wednesday during excavation work at Jenjela village in Kaduna state. Two villagers who attempted to help the Germans were shot and killed by the kidnappers. No ransom was paid when they were freed late on Saturday, a police official said, without giving details. The gunmen had demanded a ransom of 60 million naira (about $200,000 or 190,000 euros). "The two archaeologists from the Goethe University in Frankfurt are free. They are in the care of the German embassy in Abuja," said an unnamed source at the Foreign Ministry. "They are doing well under the circumstances," the source added, without providing further details. The governor of Kaduna, Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, applauded Nigeria's security forces on Sunday for securing the hostages' release. There were no details as to whether anyone had been arrested. The men were kidnapped along a road running from Abuja to Kaduna, which will soon serve as a temporary entry point for visitors to the capital, Abuja. The main airport in Abuja will be closed for repairs for six weeks beginning in early March. During that time, those travelling to the capital via air will have to land in Kaduna and then make the 100 mile (160 km) journey to Abuja by bus. https://www.dw.com/image/37721624_303.jpg Nigeria entführte deutsche Archäologen wieder frei (picture alliance/AP Photo/L. One victim, last summer, was Sierra Leone's deputy high commissioner. Most international airlines have said they will not fly into Kaduna, and some embassies in the capital are trying to limit staff travel while the airport is being repaired. |

A Lagos Island Customary Court on Thursday dissolved the marriage between Nollywood actor, Emeka Ike and his wife, Emma over alleged incessant battery. Emma, a teacher, had on July 13, 2015 approached the court to dissolve the 14-year-old marriage between her and the Nollywood star. The court president, Mr. Awos Awosola, said from the totality of the evidence before the court, it was obvious that the marriage was beyond redemption. “Emeka, who has been begging to be reconciled with his wife, has not made any effort towards the reconciliation. “The marriage is hereby dissolved with effect from March 2, in accordance with the Lagos State Customary Court Law, 2011; Order 3 Rule 7 as amended. “Any party that is not satisfied with the judgment has the right to appeal to any court of higher jurisdiction within 30 days from today,’’ the court president ruled. Awosola awarded the custody of their four children to the husband and ordered that the wife must have unhindered access to them. He said that N300 paid as Emma’s bride price had been returned to Emeka and urged both parties to maintain peace. The mother of four had earlier told the court that her husband had been physically and verbally abusing her all through the duration of their marriage. “My husband treated me like nobody and throughout this divorce tussle; he had denied me access to my children,” the woman said. “He does not allow them to pick my call as he keeps changing their numbers. “The last time I heard my first son’s voice was when he was sick and about to undergo surgery. Chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF), Abdulaziz Yari of Zamfara state, has said it is needless for state governors to abandon the responsibilities in their respective states and take trips to London in the name of visiting ailing President, Muhammadu Buhari. He stated this in Abuja during a media chat after the meeting of the NGF. Yari said that since most of the governors are already speaking with Buhari through telephone calls, it was unnecessary to take special trips to see him. The governor said that it is not surprising to know that Buhari is sick considering his age and the herculean responsibility involved in running the country. He, however, expressed his belief that Nigerians are praying for the President’s quick recovery. Governor Yari said: “I don’t think it is necessary for governors to go to London to visit President Muhammadu Buhari. Some of us are already talking to him. https://cdn1.dailypost.ng/wp-content/uploads/2015/10/Governor-Abdulaziz-Yari.jpg “I have been speaking with him. We know that he is sick quite alright. Every human being is bound to be sick “Looking at his age coupled with the heavy and huge task of running Nigeria, it is not surprising to know he is sick. “But all Nigerians, I believe, are praying for his quick recovery.” |

Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, on Thursday left an event organized by the Nigeria Police, because they kept him waiting. Obasanjo was the special guest of honour, at the Zone II maiden biannual special training and capacity building programme, at the Federal Palace Hotel in Lagos. He arrived 90 minutes before the event, which was billed to start 10.30am but didn’t begin until 11.52am. Obasanjo then informed those present, that he had to return to Ogun State for another event. “Next time, before you call me, please be ready,” he said. Speaking on the initiative, Obasanjo called for more training among security operatives and urged the Force to be in tune with the latest technology around the world. https://cdn1.dailypost.ng/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/Olusegun-Obasanjo-600x400.jpg He said: “Police must be aware and in touch with new developments in other parts of the globe. I can see my former IGP Musiliu Smith. “Smith is completely out of date to give lecture on police duty. He has experience to share with you, but not on modern way of doing things. I don’t even know how digital you (Smith) are.” |
