grin grin can't believe you just said that!!!

Anyway I still feel nurses can be better behaved when treating patients! You know that girl in yaba tech who died few months back was ill managed by a nurse who discharged her despite the fact that she was gravely ill. Infact to show you how absurd that nurse was an ambulance took her back to her hostel. She couldn't even walk back!

We can go on and on but generally we the patients know the nurses don't treat us well majority of the time
grin That was just on a lighter side.

I usually stay off topics concerning nurses.

I don't understand why no one has even come across a well mannered nurse. Yet, I have worked with many good nurses and I have always had patients thank me for taking care of them or their family. I have had patients try to hook me up with their relatives for being good to them or some big shots try to help me get better jobs from where they met me cos of my work ethics.

Talking about patients absconding. Many years ago. As a young new grad, I worked in a private hospital in lagos, I admitted this little boy brought in by his obviously poor looking parents. He was very sick and they turned up with no money. Against hospital ethics, I admitted them, called the doctor and treatment started and I told the parents this was not allowed but my conscience won't let me send them home. I asked the dad to go look for some money and come and pay deposit, he promised he would pay some money to the next shift taking ovetr. I finished and went home. By the time I came back, they had absconded without paying a dime. They had codedly taken away their useless items and wrapped rubbish and left by the bedside locker which made it seem like they only went to downstairs to watch tv. Ofcourse, the admission was traced to me, I was gonna pay for their care from my meagre salary of 32k at the time.

Now, tell me why I would go that extra mile ever again?

I make no excuses for the unruly nurses. But for every 1 rude nurse, there are more well mannered nurses. I am one.
You know my contribution on this thread is mainly because of the impression that nurses in Nigeria generally are bad and that is far from the truth.
There are some bad ones but there are a lot who are compassionate and doing good jobs.
Kudos to you.Keep up the good job.

Lemme give a random example that perhaps can help shed more light as to the nonsense spewed out typically by nurses.

Walked into health center to inquire another immunizations for my son. Asked the nurse I met by the door who started yelling that she can't give me preferential treatment and that its turn by turn. I said what I asked was just the procedure to use the facility and if one could just walk in and get xyz vaccines. Of course she kept
Shouting and still didn't answer other question.

Or is it the people who get beaten by nurses during labour/delivery for closing their laps due to the pain or reflex action I should cite as examples??

Please help
Justify the situations thorpido and haneefaRN
You just met an unruly nurse, perhaps who was under pressure.Truth be told, immunisation days are usually busy days at Gen.hospitals.

I don't know about slapping people who close their legs during labour,I know that's not a nursing procedure.Anyone who does that is going beyond what is acceptable.
You mentioned 'reflex action'.Perhaps it's a reflex action from whatever nurse did that.

Basically, the lack (or inadequacy) of health insurance is the remote cause of the bitchy attitude of the nurses. If the hospital knows that they'll get paid for their services as at when due, the Drs and nurses would be more professional.

However, I don't get why the hospitals don't provide meals to admitted patients, including nursing mothers; or require the patient to provide his/her own gloves, disinfectant and medication.
The hospitals provide meals and add it to their bills. What they don't provide is personal toiletries.Gloves and a few other things are not adequate(government supplies) so patients need to get them for their own use.

Seriously?!

The way some Nigerians reason ehn. A woman will attend ante -natal for 9 good months (for those that are even regular) but come on delivery day without even a single pin! How frustrating can that be? Are they to deliver her with their bare hands, or cover the baby with leaves or even buy what she needs for her from their own salaries? Tips will be given during ante-natal o how to go about buying the requirements bit by bit till delivery date but many clients will still present without even a pin, maybe one wrapper.
Then they react and people call them rude and uncompassionate
Do you know that at the station where I work,a woman who just delivered(though she lost the baby) absconded from the hospital without settling bills?Tomorrow if patients come and you say pay a deposit, people start shouting,ah ah,why are they always asking for money first?
We are all products of the enivironment. The patients have their faults too.

I think I agreed with the OP....I have encountered them myself and I did not like what I saw....

I paid my elder sister a visit one day... she worked with one of the Government Hospital in Abuja...

On getting there, I discovered a lady was almost in labour because blood was coming out from....u know where....But to my surprise, she was asked by the nurses to keep walking up and down the corridor of the maternity ward ...They were angry with her because they felt she should have known the rules of getting things ready based on the anti-natal preaching and teachings and that besides, it was not her first child ...She was expected to come with things like Dettol, soap, hand glove etc. since delivery was free of charge, she was expected to get those things for her own use....so they sent one of her relatives to go and get those things...

I couldn't stand there watching, I was kinda upset with my sis....She was like.. what do you want me to do? do you want me to use ordinary hand to deliver the baby...what are we going to use to clean him/her up after delivery..I was like are u telling me that in this big hospital, they got none of those things that you people required for the delivery?...As we were just talking, two of her colleague walked in and asked my sister why I was upset, she told them I was expecting her to use her hands to deliver that lady....To my surprise, both of the nurses started laughing.....one said.. do u expect this Hausa people to know and understand anything?

To cut a long story short, they delivered the woman of a baby girl using the spare gloves and other things they found in the hospital before those relatives of hers came due to my discomfort and persuasion..... This is just one out of the numerous lack of empathy I have seen Nigerian Nurses display....I have been to South African Government Hospital, I have been to Australian Government funded Hospital...It was not like that...You only get a good customer service by a Nigerian nurse if it was a Private hospital because they know that they can be fired at anytime..
I will agree that nurses and other health workers need to show more empathy. However, the bolded part of your posts raises questions.First she was told to walk up and down to aid her labour so it wasn't a punishment.
The second part is really the issue.Tell me why a pregnant woman who falls into labour has no bag packed for delivery?Do you know out of 10 patients in a government hospital, about 3 or 4 will present that way?How do you keep working with people like this and not get frustrated? The government provides limited resources so you really don't have extras in the hospital. There is poverty in the land but I think many patients are just careless.
Do you know many health care workers provide for patients from their pockets?

Thorpido....

The nice nurses are the exception rather than the rule. The OP is correct I've worked with nurses and even though they were not working in the clinic at the time their temperament was unfriendly and quite uncouth.

During immunization at primary health center you need to see all the mums literally kneeling and shivering just to be on the good side of the nurses.

I can't begin to enumerate my experiences here but I assure you they were unpleasant. The only naija nurses who were professional in my
Interactions with them were at a top notch private hospital and it was easy to deduce that it was the environment ensuring they remained professional
I wouldn't want to agree with you that nice nurses are the exception.I wouldn't agree with the general impression that nurses in Nigeria are not good. Many nurses are nice and compassionate, though I can't put a percentage on that. You will however find that group more in private hospitals.I'll agree if you say it's because of their workplace.
The most unfriendly ones are in government hospitals.Like TheArchangel said, many have made themselves products of their environment.
In Lagos state, there is a re-orientation going on with healthcare workers generally and you can't get away for long being nasty.A report of you might get to the authorities.

Tough one. I'm happy I don't have a girl yet.
It begs the question, if boys are circumcised for reasons like 'It looks good', 'it's hygienic', then why can't girls be circumcised for the same reasons? Circumcision for me means removing bits of loose skin i.e. foreskin/labia. which clearly dulls sensation (reduces pleasure) from that area. For both sexes. And I'm not complaining, it's a fair trade off for me as a male.
So, I have never liked the sound of female circumcision, but it's beginning to look like double standards all over again. Feminists, the Frankfurt school.
They are not the same. The circumcision for a male is done to remove the foreskin for hygeinic reasons essentially while the removal of the clit in the female is to reduce a woman's sensitivity.
What becomes the clit in women is what becomes the p.enis(especially the part called the cap).Circumcision in females is actually synonymous with removing the cap of a man.

First off. Majority don't sleep naked. Ever noticed how what the majority thinks becomes the standard norm?

To I and you, it's not strange, but to the majority, it is. Even though the weather is hot, many peeps still sleep with their clothes on.

Boarding school experience doesn't constitute the majority experience. Even girls in female hostels barely sleep naked.

The doings of adolescent kids is way different from that of adults.
You're right not majority. In the Op's case, she said her roomates. In my case,i'll say some people in my secondary school.
From the little i've observed, most women don't sleep with a bra on.Some don't sleep with panties. Some sleep with just the cover cloth(that's how my wife sleeps).
It's not majority but I don't see it as abnormal as you say.

Maybe you should start by telling us what is abnormal about it.
I don't see it strange, maybe because of boarding school experience.
The weather in the country is hot now anyway and people are sleeping with minimal clothing.

Sleeping butt naked ain't the same as sleeping butt naked when you're sleeping with people of the same sex, together in a room.

Bathing outside and walking around naked isn't uncommon, but sleeping naked in a room full of people? Common, even in the boarding school you attended, how many boys sleep naked?
Many boys slept naked,it wasn't strange. We used double-bunk beds so everone had his space but once in a while, you will share a bed with someone. Most guys slept with only boxers but there were a few who slept naked.

Em bro. I'll chill just cos you asked nicely.

But still, I'm a very curios person. I don't know, neither have I heard of girls sleeping naked in a room full of other girls, simply because 'it's a girl hostel'.

Which right thinking girl, will sleep naked in a room full of other girls who don't. Never forget doing such leaves her open for attack from the girls she share the room with.

I'm sure you know they can easily attribute 'sleeping naked' to one having 'Spiritual Husband'?. Or one masturbating, or what have you?.

Anyway, I sheath my katana blade. Nuff respect sir thorpido. smiley
It's not uncommon.I attended a boarding(school) and we often took our baths outside in the open because the bathrooms were usually messed up.You get used to guys' unclothedness. Some guys walk around butt naked for minutes during the day at times. We practically knew how each other's dicks were(and we weren't gay).
I know a few girls who sleep butt naked too. It's the way they are used to and it doesn't mean anything.

I guess all I can do now is hold faith that hers won't turn out that way.
The truth is a few women have large c.lits that look almost like a small p.enis.It can indeed be a problem because it will easily get rubbed by everyday activities. It can indeed increase sexual urge in them and it will take a whole lot of self- control on their part. Most women have it normal and can manage their urge as they grow.It depends on the factors listed earlier.

@question, even if it is true, I am against cutting out any part of her body.

What i don't want is a situation where her clit outgrows her vjay and starts scratching her....
I guess the reason they use water to massage that place.
A lot of things are done that don't really have an effect, more like a placebo.
Using hot water to massage a baby's c.lit won't change it's shape or size in the future. It's like massaging a nose to modify its size.It has no lasting effect but people have been so used to it,it's become a ritual.

Does the color of my skin really MATTER?! And I'm mixed: Mexican/Italian. BOTH parents immigrants but I was born here! Is there a way that I can double-check is marriage status there in Nigeria? Cos the part I read up on, even if they had a church wedding, the law wouldn't even recognize it until they went through all the procedures..basically, that means you can get married as many times you wanted in the church & none of them would be valid before God's eyes..she's never changed her last name, either..as long as I'm the VALID wife in God's eyes, then my prayers are being reached to Hod & He's listening..but if she's the valud one, I have no rights!! One of his cousin's are trying to reassure me that I'm the one with the mandate, right?? That's it's just the bone of contention on her part that I have the mandate..but why can't he just leave her be?!!! Something more gotta be to it is what I'm saying!! So is there a website like here in the US, that you can check for marriage registries so I can be 100% certain?? Cos his own brother won't answer me straight whether they were validly married..
The bolded was what I wanted to know.
Badejob, look into his eyes and ask him if he had a court or registry wedding with this woman. His response might give you an inkling that he is telling you the truth or not.
Like I advised earlier, put the wedding on probation.Hold off getting pregnant for a while.Use the next few months to assess, probe and evaluate. He could be married to you just for the papers or not.
Time will tell.
