Politics / Driver Involved In Head-on Collision With Gov. Okorocha’s Car Unknown by thrugemaster(m): 9:36pm On Apr 23, 2013 |
OWERRI — The identity and whereabouts of the Mercedes Benz 200 saloon car driver that allegedly rammed into the staff car of Imo State governor, Chief Rochas Okorocha, has remained a mystery. Imo State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Mohammed Katsina, did not help matter, yesterday, when he was asked to give details of the road traffic crash involving Chief Okorocha and the Mercedes Benz driver. Mr. Katsina only reaffirmed that there was a head-on collision between the governor’s staff car and a yellow Mercedes Benz 200 flat booth, adding that the driver did not sustain any injury. The Imo police boss, however, failed to say if the driver of the said Mercedes Benz car was arrested at any point and if he was still in their custody or not. “The police is investigating the incident and when we are through with it, the public would be informed of our findings,” the police commissioner said. Vanguard recalls that Governor Okorocha, who is now receiving medical attention in a London hospital, was involved in a road traffic crash last Friday, along the ever busy Owerri-Orlu federal highway. www.vanguardngr.com/2013/04/driver-involved-in-head-on-collision-with-gov-okorochas-car-unknown/ |

Politics / Chris Okotie Speaks On Amnesty To Boko Haram by thrugemaster(m): 10:15pm On Apr 21, 2013 |
As you read this, President Goodluck Jonathan may be on the verge of granting amnesty to the Boko Haram insurgent group at the behest of the Northern Elders Forum (NEF), who met with him during the week to discuss this sensitive issue. Advocates of amnesty for Boko Haram are pointing to the Niger Delta precedent to justify this call which is clearly symptomatic of the frustration of the governing elite in the face of a stalemated war that has no borders, or a specific target or a discernible, civilised objective. Other than the abolition of western education and the imposition of Sharia in the North, the group isn’t saying anything worthwhile; even these demands are as idiotic as they are unreasonable. How do we begin to turn back the clock of civilisation because of a few misguided armed marabouts? Amnesty, meanwhile, seems an easy way out of a crisis that appears to be turning gradually into a quagmire like is the case of Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iraq where living with terror has become a way of life. It was once a virtual impossibility to imagine that Nigerians would be living with terror, but that, for us, is now a terrifying reality. And the ruling elite have themselves to blame for this embarrassing war. There’s no shred of evidence that the Jonathan administration, despite its lackadaisical approach, is not doing its best in the fight against terrorism and other violent crimes. The escalation of violence of all shades- armed robberies, kidnappings, ritual killings, domestic violence, face book- related attacks and terrorism, is a clear indication that its best efforts are not enough. It is time to change gear. How this insidious evil became a murderous terror machine, that it is today under our eyes, is a question the nation’s ruling elite is unable to answer; the option of a general amnesty may be a vivid testimony of the growing exasperation of the elite with an evil it birthed but could no longer control. Since the Boko Haram insurgent group declared war against the country under the Yar’Adua administration, government has responded, using conventional methods to contain an unusual enemy which operates by the unconventional methods of urban guerrilla warfare. In trying to nip it in the bud at the initial stage of the crisis, he police allegedly killed the acknowledged leader of the group, Yusuf Foi, an ex-commissioner in Borno State. That’s one of the main grudges of Boko Haram and it is believed that the summary execution of Foi actually removed the lid from the tinder box. Since the elimination of the leader, the group has splintered into different dangerous factions under faceless leaders with varying and conflicting agendas, but all united under the banner of political Sharia. Today, having developed into a well – funded international terror organisation, we have no idea who controls which of its various tentacles, but one thing is certain: Boko Haram has managed to hook up with Al- Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, AQIM, with dire implications for the security of the sub-Sahara, apart from Nigeria. With Boko Haram so fragmented and dangerously polarised along ideological, theological and political divides, including some criminal elements here and there, it has become a loose cannon that threatens everybody but themselves. Running an unprecedented violent campaign first, against internal rivals, then the police for an alleged injustice and now against everyone in sight, Boko Haram is the biggest agent of destabilization in the country apart from corruption in high places. Now, the argument for Boko Haram’s amnesty cannot stand on the logic of the one granted to the Niger Delta militants because both armed groups may have levied war against their country, Nigeria, their individual motives and corporate objectives are as different as their tactics and targets. Boko Haram turned their guns against innocent worshippers mostly in churches, and a few mosques, bombed police and military targets and caused massive blood bathe through their reckless attacks on public buildings, residential districts, public and major business outlets, and industrial installations. Generally, Boko Haram is a vampire on the loose whose objective is not just to Islamise Nigeria, but to rid it totally of western influence. The group is now present in every part of Nigeria, getting set for a bloody campaign down South. Talk about a bull in a China shop! In contrast, the Niger Delta militants are environmental activists and armed campaigners for economic justice for the alienated people of the Delta region, whose lands have been destroyed by decades of oil exploration without any visible positive impact on the people’s welfare. The wild boys of Niger Delta never threatened those outside the realm of their agitation. They didn’t bring religious or tribal sentiments into their campaign or align with foreign terror groups to levy war against their own people to attain some mindless, esoteric objectives. The Niger Delta amnesty cannot possibly be a template any more than the pardon of Abacha’s coupist justifies Alameyesiegha’s clemency. Boko Haram and the Niger Delta militants are two of a kind but unique in their different colourations. We knew and still know who the Delta militants are; but we don’t know the faces behind Boko Haram. That is why the government is unable to negotiate with them. Nobody can justify an amnesty for a group that is not committed to dialogue. If Boko Haram’s body language speaks of peace, the Federal Government, tired of battle with the recalcitrant Islamic militants, would have no choice than to bring amnesty as a bait on the table. Amnesty is justifiable under an atmosphere of jaw-jaw or during a carrot and stick situation, not when one side to the conflict is invisible, implacable and unwilling to accept anything but its own terms, which in the case of Boko Haram, cannot stand on any civilised logic. Nevertheless if the northern leaders strongly believe amnesty is a way out at this stage, it is worth giving a try. However, beyond clamouring for amnesty for the terror group, the NEF must give some form of assurance that it would actively participate in enforcing the peace we all expect. www.vanguardngr.com/2013/04/the-boko-haram-amnesty-conundrum-by-chris-okotie/ 1 Like |

Auto-crash: Okorocha’s life not threatened – London doctor OWERRI — A London hospital currently treating injured Imo State governor, Chief Rochas Okorocha, who was involved in a near ghastly road traffic crash, weekend, has eliminated any trace of threat to his life. Confirming the situation in a telephone interview, the Commissioner for Information, Strategy, Culture and Tourism, Mr. Chinedu Offor, affirmed that Okorocha was rushed to the London hospital for further medical assessment and attention. “It is true that the Governor had a head injury that arose from the automobile accident but the head scan ordered by the medical experts in the London hospital has proved he had no fracture of the skull,” Mr. Offor said. According to the commissioner, the head scan also showed the governor had no internal bleeding or any problem with his brain, eyes and other relevant organs of his body. “The head scan showed the Governor had no internal bleeding. He has no problem with his brain, eyes and other organs of his body. His head is a bit sore,” Offor said. Asked if Chief Okorocha would resume official duties in Owerri, the commissioner said: “For now, his doctors only asked him to continue his treatment as an out-patient; he will only come back when his doctors give him a clean bill of health.” www.vanguardngr.com/2013/04/auto-crash-okorochas-life-not-threatened-london-doctor/ |

Politics / S-H-O-C-K-E-R: Rape Victim Remanded, Suspect Granted Bail By Lagos Court by thrugemaster(m): 8:24am On Apr 20, 2013 |
A Lagos-based couple, two weeks ago, got what they did not bargain for when an Ikeja Magistrate’s Court ordered the remand of their 7-year- old ward (name withheld) at the Child Correctional Center, Yaba, while the only suspect in police custody was granted bail. The victim was allegedly raped several times by three men: Kassim Mohammed, 43, Oluwatobi Daramola and James Aniekan. The Magistrate, Mrs E. B Daudu of an Ikeja Magistrate court granted the application of the police prosecutor identified as Anthonia for the rape victim to be remanded in the Child Correctional Center because her guardians could not take proper care of her, which made her vulnerable to sexual assault. The Magistrate however, released one of the suspects, Tobi, on bail. It took the kind intervention of the Deputy Chief Registrar of the Lagos High Court, Mr A.O. Isaacs for the Magistrate to temper justice with mercy by releasing the victim to her guardians after spending nearly the whole day at the correctional center. According to the little girl, the police prosecutor, Anthonia, whom she described as the ‘fat woman’ accompanied her to the remand home and threatened that her people would not see her again. The little girl said that she was shown a cell with no windows at the Correctional Centre, and she was threatened that she would be locked there for five days. Mohammed, Daramola and Aniekan were said to have allegedly defiled the little girl serially between July 2012 and January 2013. Daramola and Aniekan, were said to be about 21 and 19 years old respectively although, they claimed to be 17. The victim’s ordeal in the hands of the suspects, started when she was only 6 years old. Two of the suspects, Daramola and Aniekan were arraigned at a magistrate’s court in Lagos for alleged defilement. The arraignment of Daramola, was held weeks before that of Aniekan. Tobi was arraigned on a one- count charge of unlawful sexual intercourse with the hapless little girl. The charge sheet reads; “That you Daramola Oluwatobi ‘m’ between July 2012 and January 13, 2013 at Idowu Egba, Ikotun, Lagos in Lagos Magisterial District had sexual intercourse with one girl “f” aged 7 years and thereby committed an offense punishable under section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2011.” The victim who lives with her aunt and her husband at 2, Oladipo Close, off Lawani Ogunle Street, Greenland Estate, Isheri area of Lagos, narrated what she had suffered in the hands of the men. “My uncle (her aunt’s husband) and I were going to the shop. Tobi saw us. He then greeted my uncle. I also greeted him. The next day, my uncle told me to stay at home, eat and do my home work. My uncle said he would be back at home very soon that he wanted to go and collect money from his shop. “When I went downstairs to buy biscuit, Tobi saw me. He greeted me and said, “Fine girl, how are you?’ I said ‘fine.” He asked if he could buy me anything and he bought gala and a bottle of coca-cola. He then asked me to show him our house, which I did and later when I was in bed and about to sleep, Tobi came into our house. He played football with me and left. “The next day, Tobi, James and one small boy came. They put their fingers inside my bum-bum (that is they thrust their fingers into her private part). The next day, Tobi and James came again without the small boy. They now put their wee-wee(penis) inside my bum-bum(private part). Another day again Tobi came with Kassim, Kassim was holding a knife and a pack of Five-Alive and gala. ”Tobi left but Kassim used his wee- wee on me. He said that if I shout he would kill me with the knife. When Kassim had finished, he said I should show him my bathroom. I showed him and he bathed. After bathing, he said I should bring a glass cup. He shared the five-alive. He gave me four rolls of gala while he took two. He told me to throw the empty pack of five-alive into the dustbin. Kassim left after he had made sure that I discarded the empty pack of the juice into the dustbin.” The victim who has gotten used to being violated sexually every day was relieved temporarily as she escaped being abused the next day by the suspects, as she went on holiday. “The next day, I did not see Kassim because I went to my aunt’s sister’s place at Igando on holiday.” It was however a temporary relief for her because the sexual assault continued when she came back from the holiday. ”When I came back from aunt’s sister’s place. I was sent on errand by my aunt. On my way, I met Kassim who asked after my uncle and aunt. I told him they were around. Kassim now said that I should enter his house. The next day I wanted to go and buy biscuit for Chibuike my little brother (the aunt’s son), Tobi saw me and asked that I should follow him to his house. He threatened that if I refused, he would make sure I got lost and so would not see my parents again. “I followed him out of fear while carrying my two-year old cousin along. Tobi defiled me once again using his male sex organ. When he finished, he told me to go and bathe in his bathroom, but I left with my brother to buy the biscuit. My aunt asked me why I came back late. I told her that there were many people that wanted to buy things from the Mallam (the man selling provisions). I did not report all these things to my aunt and her husband because Kassim threatened to deal with me if I mentioned his name.” MD Abubakar, Police IG Narrating her own side of the story, the victim’s aunt simply called, Ngozi, said when the ordeal of her little niece started, she was in Abuja where she went to give birth. She said she was in Abuja between June and August last year, and even had to return to Abuja for medical attention because she developed complications after she had given birth through Cesarian operation. While she was away, she said the victim was left in the care of her husband and a cousin. She said it was in January this year, while she was going through the little girl’s clothes that she discovered that two of the little girl’s under wears had blood stains, then she suspected that something was amiss. She then persuaded her neice until she told her about James who worked in a barber’s shop nearby. She said the little girl also told her that James defiled her and threatened to deal with her if she revealed what he had done to her. She said, “Immediately, I called my pastor and told him what happened. He called one of the members of our church who is a policewoman. The woman said I had to come down to Ikotun Police Station to officially report.” After the police had interviewed the girl, they got James arrested. The father of James was trying to defend his son that he could not have defiled the girl since he, the father, is a pastor. However, James was detained and arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrate’s Court, where he was granted bail. According to Ngozi, James confessed that he did it. He, according to her, even wrote a confessional statement at the police station. But James’s father allegedly maintained that he made the statement under duress. Unfortunately, while this was going on, her guardians did not know that she had been raped several times by more than one person. ”It was two weeks later that we discovered that there were others. I heard my two- year old son ordering the girl to lie down in bed. I wondered how a two- year old boy could talk like that. So, I asked her where the boy learnt that. “She was just staring at me. I insisted that she answers me. It was then she told me it was one Tobi that said that to her and that the little boy was present when he did that. I started shouting and asked if the boy was watching as Tobi defiled her. She said yes that Tobi ordered him to look at the dressing mirror in his room, she told me about Tobi and Kassim.” However, Ngozi said the police were reluctant to arrest the suspects stating that Tobi’s parents went as far as alleging that she wanted to extort money from them while Kassim’s wife claimed that her husband was not in Lagos. According to Ngozi, the police were no longer working in our interest even when Tobi was arraigned before a Magistrate’s Court presided over by Mrs. E. B Daudu. She said what really galled her and her husband was when the police prosecutor identified as Anthonia who was supposed to be working in her interest, made an application for the rape victim to be remanded in the Child Correctional Center at Yaba. The prosecutor claimed that the application was necessary because the guardians could not take proper care of her. This, she said was what made her vulnerable to sexual assault. To the chagrin of the plaintiffs, Mrs. Daodu granted the application while she released Tobi on bail. Meanwhile, the family of the victim who no longer has any trust in the ability of the police to prosecute the three suspects is making efforts to get the Lagos State Government to .take over the case from the police. www.vanguardngr.com/2013/04/s-h-o-c-k-e-r-rape-victim-remanded-suspect-granted-bail-by-lagos-court/ |
Politics / FG, OGSG Protocol Officials Clash At Oluwole Awolowo’s Funeral by thrugemaster(m): 8:15am On Apr 20, 2013 |
By DAUD OLATUNJI, Abeokuta The funeral service held for late Chairman of Tribune titles, Chief Oluwole Awolowo on Friday was almost disrupted following the clash between protocol officials of the Federal Government and their counterparts from Ogun State Government. Confusion started few minutes before the commencement of the programme which was held at Our Saviour’s Anglican Church Ikenne, when one of the Protocol officials of the State government asked some members of the delegation of the Federal Government to vacate the front seats for the State governor Ibikunle Amosun and other governors. The Federal Government delegation which comprises, the President Spokesman, Dr. Reuben Abati, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Olugbenga Ashriru, Minister of State ,Federal Capital Territory, Mrs. Olajumoke Akinjide and Special Assistant to President Jonathan on Policy and Strategies, Mr. Oronto Douglas had already occupied the front seats in the Church before the arrival of the state government protocol officials. The clash of interest between the two governments’ officials was hinged on who should sit on the first seats in the Church that had already been reserved for dignitaries. The Protocol officials of the Federal Government became infuriated over the action of their counterparts in the State government who insisted that, only one person from the delegation of the Presidency would be allowed to sit on the front seat. The issue almost got out of hand before a grand child in the Awolowo family, Segun begged them not to disrupt his uncle’s funeral service. There was a pin-drop silence in the Church during the crisis which prompted a quick adjustment to accommodate Amosun and his wife on the same seat and the issue was put to rest for a while. However, when the Minister of Information Mr Labaran Maku later arrived the Church after the first crisis had been resolved, Ambassador Olugbenga Ashiru had to leave the seat for him. The crisis later reared its ugly head when another set of seats were arranged in the front for the five Governors that were at the service. This development did not go down well with the delegation of the President who resisted it but were ignored. The crisis got to its peak when the moderator called the representative of the President to speak before the governor of the State contrary to the order of protocol. The Labaran Maku-led delegation ignored the call and did not stand up to deliver the President speech. The gesture put the programme on hold for a while before one of the Awolowo daughters, Tokunbo Awolowo-Dosunmu quickly went to the moderator to correct him. Governor Ibikunle Amosun while making his remarks publicly acknowledged the flop in the protocol, saying the Presidency would make the final speech as the protocol demands. The President’s representative later spoke last. www.vanguardngr.com/2013/04/fg-ogsg-protocol-officials-clash-at-awos-funeral/ |
