EducationNigerian Universities And The Courses They Are Best Known For by timay(op): 11:05am On Sep 14, 2015
Universities are not new to Nigeria. In fact, Nigeria had
Universities before the advent of independence. This
shows that Nigerians admonish and appreciate literacy.
From the first generation Universities of the 1950s and
60s to the second generation of the 70s and 80s and
the third generation of the 90s and the 21st century,
Universities have sprung up in the country in all forms.
We have Federal, State and Privately owned Universities
in Nigeria as well as Specialised Universities in the fields
of Education, Engineering and Technology, Petroleum
Resources, Management Science and Health Science/
Technology.
Everyday new Universities are built, Colleges of
Education and Polytechnics are gradually becoming
obsolete and some have the fortune of being converted
into Universities.
Because of the proliferation of Universities in the country,
some youngsters and students find it difficult to select
schools to attend. Although this seems like a paradox
(because the higher the number of schools, the better
the choices) but the truth is that not all schools are the
same.
Some Universities have, over the years, proven
themselves to be excellent and extra-ordinary in training
students of certain fields/disciplines; both disciplinary,
vocational and professional. It is not that other schools do
not offer the same courses or do well, it is simply that a
particular school has a well trained faculty, standard
structures and facilities, rich legacies and superb alumni
networks.
Prospective students will eventually do better if they
select Universities that are well known for the courses
they've applied for.
Without being too verbose, the aim of this thread is
simple: to highlight some Nigerian Universities and the
disciplines/courses they are well known for. The schools I
present are those I am well familiar with.
This means I may not include schools I don't have
sufficient data on. However, as a reader, you may help
me in that by adding schools you are familiar with and
disciplines you know. This list is wholly personal and
based on subjective findings.
My data was generated based on alumni strength, the
amount of academics the schools produce in the field, the
nature and class of results produced by students in the
department, the output of students(practicals,
development, research, etc), physical structures present
in the departments, accreditation status and stability of
department, number of academic staff as well as their
academic pedigree, number and impact factors of
journals and academic outputs from department, etc.
These were sourced from University's websites, internet
research and other sources. As a reader, you may not
agree with what I've written but in that case, feel free to
add your own findings. Learning, as they say, is a
continuous process. This list is presented below:

We should be more concerned about stringent safety measures that should be put in place and enforced to curtail similar occurrence happening rather than focusing on how some supernatural being helped in an accident. At least that is how it is done in saner climes.

Well, speculation is easy. I'm talking of people I know. I remember submitting my WAEC enrolment form to school VP office. Because I looked big & tall, most school friends thought I was older, when in fact I was about the youngest. That I had passed my GCE a year earlier and help some of them school mates with subjects didn't help.

Why we have been programmed to be cynical and doubtful, it doesn't change the fact.

With the recent introduction of MRI Scanning, only a few failed it. I'm sure if they hadn't undergone that test, people like you would have said they were all over 35 years old.

In terms of progressing post Youth championship, here in UK, less than 10% of talented youth players get a professional contract when they turn 18. Youth talent doesn't always translate into professional success.

I watched Yakubu Aiyegbeni playing kids football. He was the last person I would have tipped to play in EPL. Only a couple more made it abroad. Far more talented players he played with never even made it to Bendel Insurance, NNB or Enugu Rangers. grin cheesy
Well u are somewhat right. some just look older than their age. especially Africans in fact the black race. grin

Not true. I knew some of them personally . They actually were still playing inter school football shortly before. I watched them play. Sure people started school older back then. Truth is some may not even really known how old they were. That was still common then. So you assume 5 years when starting primary one. The oldest was probably around 18 or 19. grin cheesy
Abeg forget dat one . the fact is Nigeria has only won dis competition in 2013. The year in which our players wear fairly younger, although they are more than age 17 but are less than age 21 which is normal for most European countries too. most of those past under17 winning players never progressed much after the competition, but only few could excel aftermath the competition.

PoliticsNigeria Pays The Least Wages Compared To Other OPEC Member. by timay(op): 4:22pm On May 29, 2015

In Nigeria, the minimum wage for an average
worker is pegged at N18, 000. Among other OPEC
countries, Nigeria reportedly pays its workers the
least wages.
Areoye Oyebola, Chairman, Movement For Nigeria’s Total
Transformation, MNTT in an opinion published by The News
magazine stated that while Nigeria pays N18, 000 as minimum
wage, other OPEC members pay their workers 4 to 12 times
higher than the average wage.
Oyebola, a renowned author and publisher of 26 books stated
that United Arab Emirates pays its worker, in Naira
equivalent a sum of N 217,360 as Kuwait pays N161,461.
Other members of the international oil body like Saudi Arabia
gives averagely N99, 327 to workers; Venezuela, N95, 839
and Iran N86, 585 ‘’The figures are quite revealing and
disheartening when compared to other OPEC countries’’ he
exclaimed.
This analysis, according to him explains why more than 100
million Nigerians live in destitution.
Oyebola appealed to the incoming president, Muhammadu
Buhari to put an end to the development.
