Yes midfielders slotted in seamlessly. But what is means is there is shortage of midfielders.

If you are a coach with a 23 man squad and 3 or 4 of your defenders are injured and you are using midfielders in the role, what will you naturally do when transfer window opens? Fill in the gap left by the injured players, or continue the season with 19 or 20 players?

It's normal to get replacements, be it long term or short term, when injury hits you in a particular department. Liverpool have injury crisis in defence so it's nothing new if they strengthen in that' area.

Tuchel vary his formations and is not known for sticking to one particular formation, he used 3 at the back while he was at PSG and Dortmund. If Kovacic and Jorginho stays fit they will fit perfectly against teams who will sit back, I wouldn't like Kante to pair with either of them in a two-man midfield it will be too sterile. Against teams who are likely to come at us a midfield 3 of Jorginho, Kovacic and Kante will be good for a start

I don't watch much Ligue 1, but from the UCL matches I watch PSG play, I don't think I've seen them play 3 at the back.

One thing I note from this first match is, TT is an attacking minded coach and I love that. He can easily play 4-2-4 when need be.

The 3-4-3 is due to lack of a reliable DM. 3-4-3 provides more protection if you're not sure of your DM.

The 3-4-3, coupled with the choice to play many experienced players, was to get a result. Avoiding defeat was the most important thing today, and I guess he felt the experienced heads were the best bet.

I think he will go back to 4-3-3, or maybe 4-2-3-1 later. And I don't think CHO will bench James in the long run. I'm guessing his choice was due to CHO's pace.

No doubt, it was a good result.

But remember Conte used this same 3-4-3 to go on a 13 game winning streak till we got found out and struggled. I won't be comfortable if 3-4-3 becomes our primary formation. It should be used when needed, depending on the opponent. Or we can tweak to it during a match.

Unless he improves, Chilwell will struggle with this formation. Alonso can even bench him.
