Now that's where you're getting it wrong, everyone thinks Elects is all about electricity and wires, meanwhile there is a lot more than that, people cant see the real picture of what its about.

Elect is a very wide and versatile field which provide many opportunities for people, in fact an Electrical & Electronics Engineer can work in an oil & gas company, as there no engineering field that does not require the touch of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Besides its very easy to stand alone as an Electrical & Electronics Engineer unlike in Chem Engr where you guys are all focused on the oil & gas sector which we even have a slot there.

I took my time to study the salary scale of Electrical & Electronics Engineers lemme share what I found with you

Starting salaries for newly graduated electrical/
electronics engineers are in the range of £21,000
to £29,000. Salaries for PhD holders may be
higher.
Experienced electronics engineers can earn
between £35,000 and £45,000, with more senior
engineers earning between £40,000 and £55,000.
Highly experienced engineers can earn in excess
of £65,000. Chartered engineers tend to earn
higher than colleagues who aren't chartered.
Salaries vary from company to company, with
some sectors attracting higher salaries due to
demand.
Hours of work can vary and this may affect the
final salary. A 40-hour week is typical. However,
the commercial pressures associated with
electronic design mean that extra hours during
evenings and weekends may be required at busy
times in order to meet deadlines. Contract staff
are often recruited to meet peaks in workloads.
Work usually takes place in a laboratory or office
environment, although some projects may require
you to work in workshops, factories, or even
outdoors.
Self-employment and freelance work are
sometimes possible for qualified engineers with a
good track record and experience. Short-term
contract work is possible, and is often arranged
through agencies.

Which country are we talking about na?

If you noticed what I've done so far, I've used locally generated information. All what you wrote up don't apply to Elect Engrs in Nigeria.

And as for the bolded, it shows you didn't read a word of what I wrote up there.

WE DON'T WORK ONLY IN THE OIL AND GAS SECTOR. THE FACT THAT WE WORK THERE MASSIVELY DOESN'T RESTRICT US.

The biggest grouse I have with Electrical Electronics Engineering in Nigeria is that it is all theoretical. I read the story of an EEE person who couldn't use a tester the other day. Funny as it seems, it's really not his fault because we don't have as much technology appreciation in Nigeria. Go to countries like Japan and China and watch high school children play around with elementary robotics when our Elect engrs keep doing circuit theory.

If you compare this to the Chemical Engineering field in Nigeria, you'll see the difference. Nigeria is one of the highest exporters of crude oil. Even with the current state of faulty refineries, we have a myriad of Oil and Gas servicing companies tthat are here to stay. 1 Addax Petroleum http://www.addaxpetroleum.com/operations

What chemical engineers do
Jack of all trades, master of them all too!!!
A chemical engineer focuses on the processes involved with transforming raw materials into usable, viable products.Chemical engineers apply their skills in science, maths, environmental management and economics to make production processes more efficient. They aim to get the best results at the least cost and with the lowest impact on the environment possible. As a chemical engineer, you could find yourself working on the following activities:*.Design and developmentof chemical processes and equipment*.Optimisation and control of industrial operations*.Plant operation and management*.Fundamental and applied research from the molecular level to full industrial scale*.Environmental management, monitoring and pollution controlWhile being a design engineer or a product development manager may sound like an ideal job – there are so many other options for chemical engineers. Think pharmaceutical engineer, oiland gas engineer or even a metallurgist. You could workfor multinational firms like Caltex or Shell in petroleum,Seimens in membrane purification, BOC in gases, or in research at ANSTO. You could even end up in consultancy.

Guy take it easy na, so because of this small argument you took a quick research on Google and Wikipedia...

Anyway this was what I found on jarushub about a fresher lamenting cos he was given chem Engr.

Your posts motivated me to obtain OAU pre-
degree form, sat for the exam and was
admitted. I keep myself familiar with your posts
concerning OAU during the program because I
do get inspired by them. I sat for OAU post
jamb during the program and I was successful
both in post JAMB and the pre-degree
programme. I opted for Chemical Engineering,
now OAU has released cut-off marks; my
aggregate score was 284.5/400 and the merit
cut-off was 255.
I was far above the cut-off mark, I told my
uncle about this good news but he wasn’t that
happy about my course (Chemical
Engineering), and he said I should have applied
for a course like Electrical/Electronics
Engineering which have a better and wider
chance of employment than Chemical
Engineering. He said Chem Engineering is a bit
narrow because most of them want to work
in oil companies, but an EEE grad has a better
chance of gaining employment
easily compared to the Chemical Engineering
guy
. I am thinking of changing the course when
we resume but it’s hard for me to make
decision because I am very confused.

source: http://www.jarushub.com/torn-between-chemical-and-electrical-engineering/

grin

Hehehehe. The problem with this your point is simply,"should a fresher's uncle be the authority for determining which of the careers is more viable for employment?"

You know, there's a common misconception people have about Chem Engineering, Petroleum Engineering and Petrochemical Engineering. They think these names are just synonyms. Well, they are not. My dad's friend once told me that I should have chosen Elect because the petroleum sector can't take Everyone. An average person can guess what Elect Engrs, civil engrs or even Mech engrs do but they can't guess what Chem Engineering is about because the name doesn't give away much. We do so much more than petroleum, sir. We deal with substances, any substance at all. That's why it is heavily economically relevant especially if you are from a school like OAU.

Oh well, I'm sure that guy would leap for joy if he saw the statistics up there.

You have no point here.

I'm going to post the places chemical engineers work in a bit. You'll be shocked to find that we compete for jobs even with Food Scientists from Cocacola,Guinness, Unilever and the rest.

In OAU, we will do our IT in two different companies because one company doesn't help much cover what the course entails.

My friend who graduated last year did her IT in both OANDO and a Food processing company.

Game on!!!...The first person to invent a web design software in Nigeria is an alumnus of OAU, from the department of Electrical and electronics Engineering

Lemme win this argument before it begins.

According to "a critical analysis of the human output of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Chemical Engineering Department", a research carried out by Adetunji, A.O. (2013) - a final year student of the Chemical Engineering Department, it was reported that the Department has produced up till date a total of 1,514 alumni with 1,280 males and 234 females. The employment spread is as follows: about 44% of the alumni work in the Engineering field with about 65% of them working in the oil and gas sector about 15% are in the academic, about 11% are in the banking sector, about 15% are in other industries (which include Food, Telecommunications, Cement industries etc.), about 2% are in government while about 13% fall into other categories which include entrepreneurs, consultants and managers.
