In as much as curbing cheating is meant to be a priority, don't you think the 4 minutes log-in window is taking things a bit too far?
A lot of things can go wrong for over 4 minutes, you know? Network might be very crappy since server script requests will be high. Only those with very strong internet connection may end up being able to log-in. I know it's just 67 people but still, a lengthening of that time should be strongly considered otherwise you might end up throwing out the baby with the bath water.

Secondly, no move has been made to address the question of to what extent the 3rd test will be used to supplement the other two. Personally, i think it's beacuse you guys are also trying to make up your minds.

With all due respect, I think too much sweat and effort has been put in by so many for all these last minute tinkering and adjustments by the co-ordinators. If you guys want to adjust/standardize stuff, can't it just wait till next year?

when people try to understand things ofthe spirit with the physical intelligence i pity them.....

Thanks for your input. The bible was intentionally written in human language so that we can understand the mind of God and his intents for us.

There is no where in the bible that God discourages us from using our minds in worship. It is when we run away from trying to be logically responsive that the devil causes confusion amongst us with each person coming out with the interpretations of scriptures they claim the "spirit" has given.

While God's nature and how he works will continue to be mysteries, Got wants us to understand what he expects of us as Christians and this understanding comes from intensive scripture study. The role of the holy spirit is discernment. Without study there will be nothing to discern.

Hello everyone. I am trying to gather a larger audience for a topic i just created. I have not been here in a while so i do not really know who to mention. It's about the issue of speaking and praying in tongues.

I found a resource online that i think many will benefit from. Here's the link to the thread i just created.

I understand that this is a deeply controversial issue and a lot varying interpretations of the scripture addressing this issues exist.
This is basically an answer from gotquestions.com with a link attached at the end. It resonates deeply with everything i have studied in scripture and i felt a moral obligation to share. Let us all air our views respectfully. Thanks. I pray God also opens our hearts and minds.

Question: "What is praying in tongues? Is praying in tongues a prayer language between a believer and God?"

Answer: As a background, please read our article on the gift of speaking in tongues: https://www.gotquestions.org/gift-of-tongues.html

There are four primary Scripture passages that are cited as evidence for praying in tongues:
Romans 8:26
1 Corinthians 14:4-17
Ephesians 6:18

Jude verse 20. Ephesians 6:18 and Jude 20 mention “praying in the Spirit.” However, tongues as a prayer language is not a likely interpretation of “praying in the Spirit.”

Romans 8:26 teaches us, “In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express.” Two key points make it highly unlikely that Romans 8:26 is referring to tongues as a prayer language.

First, Romans 8:26 states that it is the Spirit who “groans,” not believers.

Second, Romans 8:26 states that the “groans” of the Spirit “cannot be expressed.” The very essence of speaking in tongues is uttering words.

That leaves us with 1 Corinthians 14:4-17 and verse 14 especially: “For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful.” First Corinthians 14:14 distinctly mentions “praying in tongues.” What does this mean?

First, studying the context is immensely valuable. First Corinthians chapter 14 is primarily a comparison/contrast of the gift of speaking in tongues and the gift of prophecy. Verses 2-5 make it clear that Paul views prophecy as a gift superior to tongues. At the same time, Paul exclaims the value of tongues and declares that he is glad that he speaks in tongues more than anyone (verse 18).

Acts chapter 2 describes the first occurrence of the gift of tongues. On the day of Pentecost, the apostles spoke in tongues. Acts chapter 2 makes it clear that the apostles were speaking in a human language (Acts 2:6-cool. The word translated “tongues” in both Acts chapter 2 and 1 Corinthians chapter 14 is glossa which means “language.” It is the word from which we get our modern English word “glossary.” Speaking in tongues was the ability to speak in a language the speaker does not know, in order to communicate the gospel to someone who does speak that language. In the multicultural area of Corinth, it seems that the gift of tongues was especially valuable and prominent. The Corinthian believers were able to better communicate the gospel and God’s Word as a result of the gift of tongues. However, Paul made it abundantly clear that even in this usage of tongues, it was to be interpreted or “translated” (1 Corinthians 14:13, 27). A Corinthian believer would speak in tongues, proclaiming God’s truth to someone who spoke that language, and then that believer, or another believer in the church, was to interpret what was spoken so that the entire assembly could understand what was said.

What, then, is praying in tongues, and how is it different than speaking in tongues?

First Corinthians 14:13-17 indicates that praying in tongues is also to be interpreted. As a result, it seems that praying in tongues was offering a prayer to God. This prayer would minister to someone who spoke that language, but would also need to be interpreted so that the entire body could be edified.

This interpretation does not agree with those who view praying in tongues as a prayer language. This alternate understanding can be summarized as follows: praying in tongues is a personal prayer language between a believer and God (1 Corinthians 13:1) that a believer uses to edify himself (1 Corinthians 14:4). This interpretation is unbiblical for the following reasons:

1) How could praying in tongues be a private prayer language if it is to be interpreted (1 Corinthians 14:13-17)?

2) How could praying in tongues be for self-edification when Scripture says that the spiritual gifts are for the edification of the church, not the self (1 Corinthians 12:7)?

3) How can praying in tongues be a private prayer language if the gift of tongues is a “sign to unbelievers” (1 Corinthians 14:22)? 4) The Bible makes it clear that not everyone possesses the gift of tongues (1 Corinthians 12:11, 28-30). How could tongues be a gift for self-edification if not every believer can possess it? Do we not all need to be edified?

Some understand praying in tongues to be a “secret code language” that prevents Satan and his demons from understanding our prayers and thereby gaining an advantage over us. This interpretation is unbiblical for the following reasons:

1) The New Testament consistently describes tongues as a human language, and Satan and his demons are well able to understand human languages.

2) The Bible records countless believers praying in their own language, out loud, with no concern of Satan intercepting the prayer. Even if Satan and/or his demons hear and understand the prayers we pray, they have absolutely no power to prevent God from answering the prayers according to His will. We know that God hears our prayers, and that fact makes it irrelevant whether Satan and his demons hear and understand our prayers.

What do we say, then, about the many Christians who have experienced praying in tongues and find it to be very personally edifying? First, we must base our faith and practice on Scripture, not experience. We must view our experiences in light of Scripture, not interpret Scripture in light of our experiences. Second, many of the cults and world religions also report occurrences of speaking in tongues/praying in tongues. Obviously the Holy Spirit is not gifting these unbelieving individuals. So, it seems that the demons are able to counterfeit the gift of speaking in tongues. This should cause us to compare even more carefully our experiences with Scripture. Third, studies have shown how speaking/praying in tongues can be a learned behavior. Through hearing and observing others speak in tongues, a person can learn the procedure, even subconsciously. This is the most likely explanation for the vast majority of instances of speaking/praying in tongues among Christians. Fourth, the feeling of “self-edification” is natural. The human body produces adrenaline and endorphins when it experiences something new, exciting, emotional, and/or disconnected from rational thought.

Praying in tongues is most definitely an issue on which Christians can respectfully and lovingly agree to disagree. Praying in tongues is not what determines salvation. Praying in tongues is not what separates a mature Christian from an immature Christian. Whether or not there is such a thing as praying in tongues as a personal prayer language is not a fundamental of the Christian faith. So, while we believe the biblical interpretation of praying in tongues leads away from the idea of a private prayer language for personal edification, we also recognize that many who practice such are our brothers and sisters in Christ and are worthy of our love and respect.

shocked shocked After making us relax unnecessarily in the expectation that had we had one more week, they're just telling us this. I have one question though. Did the lecturers eventually agree to this or it's the school management that is just saying it's own?

As much as I'll like to agree with Babysmart, I don't think most of what she complained about are particular to OAU. Like Dammytrager said, they are peculiar to the Nigerian Schooling system. The only aspect OAU has "distinguished" herself is the snail-like calendar system. Other than that, I think the school is a giant amongst contemporaries when it comes to learning experience and teaching. OAU has some of the best lecturers in this part of the world. Google is your friend.

NB: At this moment,in Nigeria's Economy, the success of the Nigerian graduate is no longer a function of their alma matter. It is hard work and your INDIVIDUAL CAPACITY that will distinguish you out there. In other words, nobody gives a rat's ass about your university anymore. Some people don't even know where OAU is located and no, i am not exaggerating about this( go to the far north). Employers only care about your individual ability. Go to Banks and Multinational companies and see Lasu and Bowen pikin dem as dey full the place. grin

Later, guys. I have missed a lot of people here sha. I couldn't help but chip in smiley

my dear it is important to be fair when making judgement.

I do not know how long you have been on nl religion section but it usually involves passionate discussion with may deginerate into uncharitable words, infact after replying to a few stuff here the next thread I'm visiting is one where I've been called a bigot severally for holding a different opinion. This is common in the section.

But to pick up italo's "bigot" comment and use it as a stick to beat him while failing to mention that he was responding to a post where he was called a bigot is simply unfair and seems like witch hunting.

He isn't the first person to use the word on the thread and if you are going to condemn the use of the word the kindly do so across the board instead of looking for a scape goat.

Haaaaaaa! You people! shocked
What part of my comment did I complain about the use of the word "bigot" by italo? I challenged him because I realised he was generating this negative vibe that was manifested in little insults like"you are not thinking well" or something of the sort. And of course I don't agree with the guy that called him a bigot. I quoted him so he'll stop ending his somewhat meaningful comments with stuff like"Pray that God improves your reason and give you the grace to use it well" It's condescending and insulting.

And, does the fact that things are like this on religious section not raise a question in your heart: Are this people here in search of truth or do they just want to prove their points. If we're here to prove points, then who are we fooling?

The bigot is the one who wants to force his stupidity on others...irrespective of reason. And that is you.

I've followed the posts here from the beginning. It's ironic that a discussion that should help us arrive at the truth hence helping us live more rightly before God has elicited a lot of very insulting comments from you, simply because they don't see things the way you do.

I tell anyone who cares to listen. I believe the controversies in Christianity are there to help us test whether the love of Christ abides in us because it is when you don't see eye to eye with a person on issues like these that your love is really put to the test. Yes, we can have intelligent discourse but it should be done with kindness and humility. It is because of people like you that a lot of well meaning people no longer want to have conversations like this.

Please change your attitude. It's very repulsive. The only reason that this discussion hasn't degenerated into an e-war thread is that the people you've been stylishly hurling insults are haven't replied with insults.

That's all I want to say, sir. I look forward to a positive reaction to this post.

*sigh* Nigerian students cannot afford to be silent anymore. The problem with such sad stories is that crying over them is like crying over split milk. The families would be offered condolences like it will bring back the dead and then the clinics keep on doing what they feel like. No heads will roll for the snatching of promising lifes and measures will probably still not be put in place to forestall similar future occurrences sad
