EducationTwo Candidates, Parent Arrested For Falsifying UTME Scores With AI — JAMB. by TITOPE(op): 4:59pm On Apr 18
Two candidates, parent arrested for falsifying UTME scores with AI — JAMB.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has announced the arrest of two candidates and a parent for allegedly falsifying 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) results using artificial intelligence and other electronic tools.

The board disclosed this on Friday, April 17, while releasing the results of 632,788 candidates who sat the examination on Thursday, April 16.

JAMB spokesperson, Fabian Benjamin, said the suspects were apprehended for manipulating official SMS result notifications to fabricate or alter scores with the intention of deceiving parents, guardians and members of the public.

“Currently, two candidates and one parent are in custody for engaging in result falsification using AI and other electronic means,” the statement said.

Benjamin described the act as a serious criminal offence and warned that the board would ensure all those involved face the full weight of the law.

He also cautioned candidates against tampering with result messages sent through JAMB’s official SMS platforms, 55019 and 66019.

The board advised candidates who sat the examination on Thursday to check their scores by sending UTMERESULT via SMS to 55019 or 66019 using the phone number linked to their registration.

PoliticsInsecurity Will Stop In Nigeria 2 Weeks After Elections - Akpabio by TITOPE(op): 6:01pm On Apr 14
Nigeria’s Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has sparked widespread reactions after speaking on the current security situation in the country.

According to him, the rise in insecurity is linked to the ongoing political season. He explained that as elections approach, tensions tend to increase, which can affect stability in some areas.

In his words:

“Insecurity is increasing because election is coming, because people don’t know what to do again. Immediately after election, two weeks after election, the insecurity will stop. The insecurity is being sponsored by people.”

Akpabio suggested that once the elections are concluded, the situation is expected to improve within a short period.

He also used the opportunity to criticize the opposition, saying they are not well organized. While speaking, he appeared to take a swipe at Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s candidate in the 2023 presidential election.

According to him:

“Opposition is in disarray, someone got six million votes and abandoned the party, abandoned the six million votes and went shopping for another platform and they are blaming the ruling party.”

Following his comments, many Nigerians have reacted online. While some people agree that election periods can increase tension, others believe security should be a top priority at all times and not something expected to improve only after elections.

The statement has continued to generate conversations, with many citizens calling for consistent efforts to ensure peace and stability across the country now, not later.

Foreign AffairsOutrage As Trump Mocks Pope Leo And Posts ‘jesus Healing’ Image Of Himself by TITOPE(op): 10:17am On Apr 13
President Trump slams Pope Leo as ‘weak’ and posts bizarre image of himself as Jesus healing the sick

US President Donald Trump has strongly criticized Pope Leo XIV for his stance on the Iran war, describing him as “WEAK” on crime and “terrible” on foreign policy, in a late-night post which also saw him uploading an A.I.-generated image of himself dressed as Jesus.

This comes days after Pope Leo said Trump’s warning that an “entire civilisation will die tonight,” in reference to Iran, was “unacceptable.” The pope has also suggested that a “delusion of omnipotence” is fuelling the war between the United States and Iran.

In his lengthy Truth Social post, the president said he does not “want a Pope who criticises the President of the United States”. He claimed that the Catholic Church’s leadership had been “arresting priests, ministers, and everybody else” in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic and suggested that he preferred the pope’s brother.

The president went on to suggest that his own election played a role in the Catholic Church’s choice of pope in May 2025.

After putting the Pope on blast, Trump uploaded an A.I.-generated image of himself dressed as Jesus and healing the sick, while flanked by eagles, fighter jets, and the Statue of Liberty, following criticism over his earlier remarks about the Pope.

PoliticsBREAKING: Mass Sack:nlc Shuts Down AEDC Operations In Abuja, three Nigerian State by TITOPE(op): 10:48am On Apr 01
The Nigeria Labour Congress has shut down the offices of Abuja Electricity Distribution in Abuja, Kogi, Nasarawa, and Niger over the mass sacking of over 900 workers.

TITOPE BLOG observed that the Disco’s headquarters in Abuja, areas in the nation’s capital and other offices in Kogi, Minna, Niger, and Nasarawa States are under locks and keys as of Wednesday morning.

This comes a day after the NLC, led by its president, Joe Ajaero, picketed AEDC’s headquarters over the controversial disengagement of nearly 900 workers.

Explaining the crisis, Ajaero said it dates back to about six months when AEDC management claimed the disengagement would affect only workers who had reached retirement age or were on the verge of retiring; however, the reverse was the case.

“At that time, the union intervened based on that understanding. No responsible labour leader would oppose the exit of workers who have legitimately reached retirement age.

“ The majority of those affected were not at retirement age. Some had not even spent up to five or six years in service. In fact, many had only worked for two to three years. That is the height of deceit,” he declared.

Darkness looms in Abuja, three states

NLC on Tuesday issued a 48-hour ultimatum to AEDC management to resolve the matter or face escalated industrial action that could cripple electricity supply in the Federal Capital Territory and three other states.

“If nothing is done within that time, we cannot guarantee power supply. The workers who keep the system running will stay at home, and if they are not at work, the system will naturally be affected,” he warned.

PoliticsStyrofoam Ban In Lagos, Oyo Puts Ogun On Edge by TITOPE(op): 7:58am On Apr 01
Amid the growing ban of styrofoam and single use plastic in parts of Nigeria due to its severe environmental pollution, Ogun State has been caught in-between.

TITOPE BLOG reports that neighboring Lagos and Oyo states moved to “green” their economies through this ban.

Recall that in January 2024, Lagos State Government caught many by surprise through the announcement of its immediate ban on disposable styrofoam plates and by July, 1, 2025 they began full enforcement, sealing shops and warehouses that still held these items.

Barely a week after Lagos State’s announcement, Abia State in the South-East also banned styrofoam as food containers in the state.

The Commissioner for Environment, Philemon Ogbonna in a statement, urged its residents to stop using styrofoam for food packages until investigations are fully carried out on the products’ dangers to public health.

Following suit, the Oyo State government joined the movement in March 2024, and in February 2026, the House of Assembly introduced a bill, titled Oyo State Single-Use Plastic Prohibition (SUPs) Bill, 2026 which aims to phase out all single-use plastics by 2027.

Why the ban?

Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency explained that these single-use plastics cause harm to its environment, pollute waterways, endangers wildlife, and contributes to long-lasting ecological damage.

“Styrofoam harms our environment and takes centuries to decompose. Hence, LASEPA urges you to protect our ecosystem, explore eco-friendly choices, and be part of the solution. It harms our environment, pollutes our waterways, endangers wildlife, and contributes to long-lasting ecological damage,” the agency stated.

Research has also shown that styrofoam contains styrene and benzene, which has been linked to several health challenges.

The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified styrene as a probable human carcinogen, associated with increased risks of leukemia, lymphoma and genetic damage in the white blood cells. Benzene, used in styrene production, is also a known carcinogen linked to leukemia and other blood cancers.

Despite several states citing health risks and environmental damage, Ogun State being at the center of them remains hesitant, giving many distributors room to move their stocks into the state.

This has, however, grown fears that the “Gateway State” is fast becoming a dumping ground for these banned products.

Recycling vs Reality

Unlike its neighbors, Ogun State government during the 2024 World Environment Day themed, “Beating Plastic Solution”, the Commissioner for Environment Ola Oresanya, announced the state’s Plastic for Cash and Blue Box initiatives instead of an outright ban.

The program aimed at reducing plastic waste, incentivising recycling and promoting sustainable environmental practices.

According to the Commissioner, data from the National Bureau of Statistics and UN-Habitat report revealed that Nigeria generates over 35 million metric tonnes of waste annually, with Ogun State accounting for more than 1.6 million metric tonnes of this volume.

Although the state boasts of eight recycling companies processing roughly 2,000 metric tonnes of plastic daily, the scale of the crisis is overwhelming.

“Of the waste generated daily in Nigeria, about 32,000 metric tonnes are plastics. Here in Ogun State, we recycle approximately 2,000 metric tonnes of plastic daily, thanks to the activities of eight notable plastic recycling companies operating within the state.

“The time to act is now.Plastic pollution has grown into a global crisis, and we must adopt decisive, community-driven solutions to stem the tide,” Oresanya asserted.

While the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) has praised this “progressive” waste-to-wealth model, critics argue that it fails to address the sheer volume of styrofoam flooding the state.

During a field observation in Abeokuta, our correspondent discovered pouches of a popular kids brand of fruit juice concentrate-based drink manufactured in the heart of Lagos, bearing a startling disclaimer: “NOT FOR LAGOS.”

This stamp indicates that the product is prohibited for sale or distribution within Lagos State, because the pouch carrying an orange coloured straw is a flexible single-use plastic (often falling under the category of materials less than 40 microns or deemed non-recyclable SUPs).

The drink in question, produced on February 2, 2026, with an expiry date of November 1, 2026, proves that it is not an old stock being cleared out, rather it is a fresh product destined specifically for the markets outside Lagos.

At a local food stall in Abeokuta, a resident simply identified as Pelumi represents the average consumer caught in the trap of the single-use plastics.

To her, opting for the N100 fukè fukè (a popular Yoruba street slang for single-use takeaway plate) means cutting her coat according to her clothes, despite knowing it’s bad for her health.

“I always go for it because it’s cheaper,” she explained, clutching a steaming styrofoam pack.

“If I’m buying food for N1,000, will I now buy a takeaway plate of N300? No, now.

“I don’t know if I can stop buying it; something must kill a man,” she remarked smiling.

“We even thank God that we have graduated from buying food in nylon.

“The reason most people don’t even buy this plate is because the food inside can pour away, not because of the effect it will have on the body,” Pelumi said.

Styrofoams are deadly- Professor of polymer chemistry warns

A Professor of polymer chemistry, at the Federal University Oye-Ekiti, (FUOYE) Prof. Dosu Malomo warned that the primary component of styrofoam- styrene, is built on a foundation of benzene, one of the most aggressive carcinogens known to science.

“Even in the laboratory, we handle benzene with the same extreme caution as potassium cyanide or ethylene oxide,” Malomo told TITOPE BLOG.

“These chemicals are not allowed to sit loosely on a bench; they are kept in special custody and dispensed with extreme care.

“Yet, today, Nigerians are unknowingly serving hot meals inside these same hazardous materials,” he stated.

The don insisted that the “cheapness” of Styrofoam is a myth when weighed against the cost of cancer treatment, urging Nigerians and the Ogun State government to embrace safer, existing alternatives.

Malomo argued that styrofoam is deadly when it meets heat, disclosing that even the popular habit of microwaving food inside these single-use containers is a recipe for disaster.

“The principle of a microwave is based on high-frequency molecular vibration. When that vibration hits the styrofoam, it effectively vaporizes the material.

“The benzene fumes leach directly into the food. If someone feeds on that for just six months, the bio-accumulation of these ‘deleterious’ toxins begins to trigger carcinogenic changes in the body system.

“There are many plastics that are ‘friendly’ in comparison; materials made from Polypropylene or Polyterephthalate containers are available and far safer. While they are still not biodegradable, they do not possess the deadly heat-reaction that makes styrofoam a silent killer,” he warned further.

He noted that in terms of environmental pollution, just like other plastics, it clogs waterways, constitutes aquatic disturbance to the ecosystem and takes years to decay.

“If you buy moi moi wrapped in a leaf, when you finish eating it, you throw the leaf away, no problem.

“In less than 6 months, the leaf will decay and become manure. But for styrofoam it’s different; they can stay 30-40 years, they will not decay.

“They will only begin to wear away in the form of powder. That is after a long time because of environmental factors such as ultraviolet radiation coming from the sun rays and oxygen and ozone that are present in the air,” he said.

Speaking on the “NOT FOR LAGOS” product, Prof. Malomo maintained that the stamps are a calculated legal shield for producers, saying “the producers in Lagos know exactly what they are doing.

“By law, they cannot sell these in Lagos, so they stamp them to cover themselves. If they are arrested, they can claim they intended the product for other states where the law doesn’t exist yet.”

He described this as a dangerous loophole that requires a holistic, national ban from the Federal Ministry of Health and the National Assembly to protect all Nigerians, not just those in specific states.

No Ban in Sight, Ogun Government Defends Styrofoam’s Safety

The State Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, told our correspondent that the state has no immediate plans to ban Styrofoam, insisting that the material is stable and safe for public use.

Addressing the health fears raised by toxicologists, the Commissioner argued that the danger of Styrofoam has been overstated.

He acknowledged that plastics can release carcinogenic fumes like furans and dioxins, but opined that this only happens under extreme heat.

“No, for now we are not banning the product in Ogun State,” Oresanya stated firmly.

“People are free to use styrofoam and other plastics here in the state. We are more focused on improving our waste management and styrofoam plastics are a component of these waste.

“Styrofoam, if not exposed to heat, is stable; there’s nothing wrong with it. When you heat them and that applies to all plastics not just styrofoam below 1,600 degrees centigrade, they are likely to give furans and dioxins.

“Furan and dioxins are carcinogenic when you heat them under such conditions, but food products are less than 100 degrees in temperature, so they are not dangerous,” the commissioner added.

PoliticsFuel Was ₦97 Under Jonathan, Why Are Nigerians Silent At ₦1350 Today? by TITOPE(op): 4:15pm On Mar 26
Anybody supporting this government is a wicked person

Back when petrol sold for ₦97 during the administration of Goodluck Jonathan, the atmosphere felt tense. People spoke up loudly. Protests filled the streets. Social media, even in its earlier days, was full of frustration. The general mood was simple, this is too much, something has to change.

Fast forward to today, with petrol hovering around ₦1350 under President Bola Tinubu, the reaction feels different. Not entirely silent, no, but more divided. Some still complain openly, others defend the situation, often with phrases like “on your mandate we shall stand.

It raises an uncomfortable question. Is it really about the price of fuel, or the person in charge?

Maybe it’s politics. Maybe loyalty. Maybe fatigue. Or maybe people have just adjusted their expectations over time.

But one thing is hard to ignore, the contrast is loud. Almost too loud to pretend it doesn’t exist.

Man flogged to de@th for allegedly raping minor in Bayelsa

A 47-year-old man, identified as Emi Sigah, accused of sleeping with a minor, has d!ed after he was flogged to death by a mob in Ekowe community, Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State on Wednesday, March 26.

The deceased was said to have collapsed after receiving about 40 strokes of cane which is part of a customary punishment that prescribes up to 120 strokes for individuals accused of r@pe in the community. Residents said the practice is an age-long tradition in Ekowe, where each of the 12 families administers 10 strokes of the cane, amounting to a total of 120 strokes, as a deterrent against sexual offences, which are considered as sacrilegious act in the community.

The residents of the community allege that the rape victim (name withheld) had accompanied her aunty to a nearby farm to pluck okra, when she was allegedly ambushed by the culprit while her unsuspecting aunty was leading the way from the farm. The suspect was said to have been caught allegedly molesting the toddler in the nearby bush.

In fulfilment of the old culture of Ekowe community, the suspect was subjected to a 120 flogging marathon, but he fainted after enduring 40 strokes and was later confirmed dead.

It was gathered that some individuals in the community tried to intervened, offered between N50,000 and N15,000 as options for the flogging, but community youths insisted that the tradition must be followed to serve as deterrent to others.

The Chairman of Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, Mr. Target Segibo, who confirmed the incident in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Ayebaitari Easterday, said normalcy has been restored to the community with the timely intervention of the council and the security operatives.

He said the youth president of the community and three others persons have been arrested in connection with the death of the suspect, adding that they are currently being detained at the Criminal Investigative Department (CID) of the Bayelsa State Police Command in Yenagoa.

BusinessNew CBN Rule: Mobile Banking Apps Now Restricted To One Device Per User by TITOPE(op): 2:45pm On Mar 15
The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, on Friday announced sweeping new measures for instant payment operations, including a restriction that limits mobile banking applications to a single device per customer.
The directive was contained in a circular issued by the apex bank’s Payments System Policy Department and signed by its Director, Musa Jimoh, and addressed to banks and other financial sector stakeholders.

Under the new policy, Nigerian bank customers will no longer be able to operate the same mobile banking application on multiple devices at the same time.

According to the CBN, the policy forms part of additional guidelines aimed at strengthening the operations of instant payments in the country and will take effect from July 1, 2026.

“The Central Bank of Nigeria, in line with its mandate of promoting financial system stability, hereby issues additional guidance for the operations of Instant Payments in Nigeria:

All Financial Institutions (FIs) offering Instant Payment (IP) shall provide the following additional functionalities: Mandatory device binding: Mobile financial services applications (apps) shall only be enabled on one device at a time, and customers cannot operate the apps concurrently on multiple devices.

“Migration to another device shall trigger automatic re-activation and authentication.

“Customers shall have the option to opt out of or opt in to IP service at any time and for any given period. This process shall be subject to Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) control. The default setting shall be opt-in upon onboarding a new customer.

“In the opt-out mode, a customer shall not be able to carry out online instant transfer of funds (intra or inter) from his/her account to another customer.

“However, customers can physically visit the financial institution to effect a transfer during this period.

“Voluntary Transaction Limit: Subject to the existing maximum limits of N25 million for individuals and N250 million for corporates, customers shall have the option to adjust the limits as needed.

“Any such adjustment shall be subject to enhanced due diligence and appropriate risk assessment by the financial institution.

“The new transaction limit shall take effect immediately upon successful completion of multi-factor authentication (customer consent).

“Enterprise Fraud Monitoring functionality: All FIs shall implement and activate Enterprise Fraud Monitoring for both inflows and outflows to facilitate fraud detection and restriction of suspicious transactions.

“Liveliness Checks for online account opening/account reactivation: Accounts opened online shall be subjected to a liveliness check; all online account openings/online reactivations shall be validated in real time with the BVN/NIN database; and enhanced authentication mechanisms (such as MFA, biometric authentication, soft token, hard token, liveliness check, etc.) shall be adopted for online account reactivation.

“For new accounts, transaction limits (inflow and outflow) shall be imposed on a newly activated mobile financial services app in the first 24 hours of activation.

“The limit shall be as determined by the financial institution, subject to a maximum transaction limit of N20,000.00.

“For existing accounts, transaction limits (outflow) shall be imposed on a newly activated mobile financial services app in the first 24 hours of activation.

“The limit shall be as determined by the financial institution, subject to a maximum transaction limit of N20,000.00.

“For internet banking access, the first-time log-on on a new device shall require additional MFA. The above are the minimum standard requirements for instant payments in Nigeria.

“Implementation of the above provisions shall take effect from July 1, 2026.”

Earlier, the apex bank also issued another circular directing banks to impose restrictions on loan defaulters.

Foreign AffairsSaudi Arabia Vs Iran: The Strategic Move That Changed The Game by TITOPE(op): 2:16pm On Mar 15
Saudi Arabia was one step ahead of Iran
.

Saudi Arabia built the East–West Crude Oil Pipeline, often called Petroline, in the 1980s.
Length: about 1,200 km (750 miles).

Route: from oil fields in the Persian Gulf across Saudi Arabia to the Red Sea port of Yanbu.
Purpose: to move crude without using the Strait of Hormuz.

So the core statement that Saudi Arabia created a pipeline to bypass Hormuz decades ago is correct.
2. It was partly motivated by Hormuz risk.

The pipeline was developed during the Iran–Iraq War, when attacks on oil tankers in the Gulf raised fears that shipping through Hormuz could be disrupted.

Saudi Arabia wanted an alternative export route in case the strait became unsafe.

Foreign AffairsMiddle East Crisis: Trump Urges China, France, Japan To Protect Strait Of Hormuz by TITOPE(op): 6:33pm On Mar 14
Trump asks China, France, Japan to deploy warships to Strait of Hormuz after Iran’s threat

United States President Donald Trump says several countries will deploy warships alongside the US to ensure the Strait of Hormuz remains open following Iran’s reported attempt to restrict access to the critical shipping route.

In a post on his Truth Social platform on Saturday, Trump said nations affected by disruptions in the waterway would join efforts to secure it.

“Many Countries, especially those who are affected by Iran’s attempted closure of the Hormuz Strait, will be sending War Ships, in conjunction with the United States of America, to keep the Strait open and safe,” he wrote.

The strategic strait is one of the world’s most important maritime corridors, carrying a significant share of global oil shipments.

PoliticsFG Considers Social Media Age Limit In Nigeria To Protect Children Online by TITOPE(op): 3:49pm On Mar 11
The Federal Government of Nigeria has begun consultations on plans to introduce age limits for social media use as part of broader efforts to improve online safety for children.

The initiative is being led by the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, which has launched a public survey seeking opinions from parents, teachers, young people and digital experts on how best to regulate children’s access to social media platforms.

According to the ministry, the consultation aims to develop a balanced policy framework that protects children from online dangers while still allowing them to benefit from the educational and social advantages of internet access.

Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, said the government is working to ensure that minors are better protected as internet usage continues to grow across the country.

He noted that while the internet offers opportunities for learning, creativity and communication, it also exposes children to several risks including cyberbullying, harmful content, online exploitation, misuse of personal data and new threats linked to artificial intelligence tools.

Tijani emphasized that public participation will play a key role in shaping the proposed regulations, particularly as the government considers measures such as age restrictions, stronger age-verification systems, increased accountability for digital platforms and tighter regulatory oversight.
