Following the TB Joshua’s N50k bribe allegations by journalist Nicholas Ibekwe, PM News reporter Simon Ateba has written a thought-provoking piece on his blog on the state of journalism in Nigeria and why Nigerian journalist will continue to accept “bribe” until the situation improves. He also cast doubts on some of what Ibekwe reported. Read the piece below: People have been asking me, “Simon , were you at that press conference on 14 September where Prophet T.B. Joshua allegedly gave N50,000 to journalists to write a positive story on the building collapse that killed many people?”, my answer is always the same. I was not at that event, I do not know if he gave a bribe, I do not know if it was N50,000, and cannot comment on it. But I do not feel better or more righteous in any way than those who might have collected anything, if money was given. The truth is this, as long as journalists in Nigeria are not paid for months or are given irregular crummy salaries, as long as they are not insured, as long as publishers pocket all the corrupt money they get in the forms of adverts or special reports from corrupt politicians, and as long as Nigerians refuse to spend their money on newspapers, which push publishers to solicit money from politicians who have pocketed everything, many journalists will continue to accept gifts, bribes or whatever you call it. I understand that foreign journalists at the event and a Nigerian journalist allegedly rejected the money. I am happy they allegedly did and that’s where the profession should be. That’s the ideal we all want. But that’s not where we are. Most journalists in Nigeria have no insurance. Many newspapers in Nigeria have not paid their reporters for months, some even a year, including those newspapers that are even getting those corrupt advert money from government officials. A CNN, Reuters, Associated Press or BBC journalist will surely die if he was not paid for one year, had no insurance, no house to live in, and no friend to support him. And many former journalists who are now successful and even the society at large, are very wicked. They see a journalist who is striving to stand out, who wants to be objective and unbiased, they watch him as life challenges crush him to death. No car, no house, no savings, nothing to show for 20 years of work. And when such a journalist accepts a gift, the same society says, look at him, he’s corrupt. He’s biased. He’s unethical. But the same society screaming does not buy newspapers, they prefer to spend all their money on drinks, cigarettes, clothes, bags and cars but demand and expect higher standards from the media. So I am sorry to say it won’t happen. The society is hypocritical and the media industry is sick. But until there’s a shift, nothing will change. You can say these are just excuses. You may even add that the media should be our conscience, and only truth is acceptable. You will be passing a superficial judgement, because you cannot just should look at corruption in the media without understanding why the rot is so deep and the change so hard. You must understand that it is the product of a failed society. A corrupt government, a corrupt judiciary, a corrupt police force, a corrupt army, a corrupt civil society, a corrupt banking and financial system, a corrupt educational system, a corrupt political system, in summary, it is the product of a failed country that does nothing when journalists are not paid for months or are left to wallow in poverty after serving their nations for 20 years. I used to know a journalist who passed on after working for his company for many years in Lagos, and his wife was given only one month salary to take care of herself and their kids. I guess, this, certainly, is not the future we all envisaged after graduating with a First Class at the University. My rambling is getting too long. Let me summarise. The journalist who leaked the alleged bribery to the public claimed that he did so because journalists were too soft on Prophet T.B. Joshua and were not reporting the truth. Hear him: “I observed that Nigerian media were being too gentle on TB Joshua despite the glaring irregularities surrounding the collapse. I read more reports about the “hovering craft” and how Boko Haram could have sabotaged the building. “Very little was reported about the structural defects of the building. Not much was written about the fact that the building originally had 2 floors and was being illegally refurbished with 4 additional floors when it collapsed. We didn’t come hard on the Synagogue Church goons who attacked first responders. We didn’t highlight the fact that many of those that perished could have been saved if NEMA officials weren’t barred from the site for almost three days! We didn’t make an issue of the fact that our colleagues who had gone to report the collapsed building were molested on Saturday.” Of course, you all know that these are lies. What he’s saying is not factual. Or maybe he did not read reporting of the building collapse enough. On 15 September, the day after the alleged bribe was given to journalists, P.M.NEWS published this editorial: http://www.pmnewsnigeria.com/2014/09/15/the-synagogue-tragedy. You can read it yourself and let me know if it looked like they were being soft on T.B. Joshua or hiding the facts. The 20-year old newspaper said in that editorial: “Perhaps most of the dead victims would have been rescued alive if the church staff and people perceived as thugs did not prevent officials of the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, from carrying out rescue operations immediately the building crumbled. Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola, had to intervene by visitting the scene of the disaster and ordering the church staff to leave the site before rescue work could start in earnest.” The newspaper concluded it editorial by saying: “We must go beyond speculation to serious investigation to unravel the facts and prevent future tragedies of this magnitude. Those who are found wanting should be made to face the full wrath of the law.” Does that look like a newspaper trying to protect T.B. Joshua or that did not care about the dead? Of course not. But that was not all. the same day, the cover story of P.M.NEWS in Lagos read: “Boko Haram Attack: Nigerians Blast T.B. Joshua”. The lead or the first paragraph of that story read: “Nigerians have blasted Prophet T.B. Joshua of the Synagogue Church of All Nations for claiming that Boko Islamist sect might have brought down a six-storey building in his church that has killed more than 40 people.” That front page story was published on 15 September. Does it look like people who were buying the story of a jet hovering over the building before it came down? These examples were just from P.M.NEWS. It was the same thing for The Punch, The Nation, Vanguard, The Sun, ThisDay, Tribune, The New Telegraph, TheNews Magazine, and even TVC and Channels TV, as well as other television and radio stations. So it is not factual to say that Nigerian journalists were being soft on T.B. Joshua or were hiding the facts. It is simply a lie. If Nigerian journalists collected the money, they did so because of a sick industry, a failed state and the reasons I mentioned above. But the money certainly did not change the facts. And we all knew the facts even before the audio was leaked last week. One thing I can say is that until investigation is conducted and concluded, no one can claim to know exactly what led to the building collapse. It will just be ranting, and rambling that lead to semantic noise but nothing evidential or concrete. I can say more, and go on and on, but for now, it’s time to mourn the dead. May their souls rest in peace. http://infonubia.com/2014/09/simon-ateba-writes-the-truth-about-tb-joshuas-alleged-bribe.html |

Religion and politics should not mix. |
This is a MUST READ article about the recent controversy surrounding CAN president Ayo Oritsejafor and the Nigerian jets that were confiscated with $9.3 million on board in South Africa on September 5th. Read and share your thoughts. ********************************* When the news broke that a private plane from Nigeria was seized in South Africa with brand new dollar notes of about $10m my heart palpitated and I was askance even though I was in the midst of others. My fear steamed for a few facts. I was sure that the federal government of Nigeria will do what it does best; keep mum and then later will either deny or offer some lame explanations while muddling up the waters sufficiently enough by using pawns to obliterate the facts of the matter and politicizing the issues, hereby diverting our attention away to other things. Sad to say, I have been proved right on every count. Not only have they started their campaign of calumny, they have used a most saddening approach; they are playing the religious card. Why is the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) getting involved in a supposedly private matter of such dangerous proportion? We shall come back to the CAN later on. Suffice to say that Nigeria is in deeper troubles than we are presently prepared to admit to. Sadly, the trouble and danger inherent is potent enough and highly dangerous to our corporate existence, while collectively playing the ostrich will benefit no one eventually. Here are the facts of the matter. On 5th September 2014, a Bombardier Challenger 600, with a Nigerian flight crew piloted by Captain Tunde Ojongbede, flew into South Africa and landed at Lanseria Airport in Johannesburg. Eventually we got to understand that there were two planes and not one that flew in to South Africa. The other plane involved, used by Swat Inc., a Hawker Siddeley 125, also with an American registration number (N497AG), landed at Lanseria Airport last month. That plane and its passengers remained in the country for two days before returning to Abuja on August 13. When the passengers luggage were checked, officials of SA Revenue Service (Sars), found undeclared raw cash of $9.3 million on the passengers. On board one the seized aircrafts was also an Abuja-based Israeli man, Eyal Mesika, whom we were told was the only man with the combinations to open the lock on the suit cases containing the cash to be laundered or used to purchase illegal arms by the order of some unnamed persons in the Nigerian Government. One amazing fact is that the Nigerian government has maintained a curious silence since the scandal broke on September 5th when South African law enforcement agents confiscated $9.3 million from the two private jets. If Sahara Reporters did not blow the lid on the illegality, I doubt if ordinary Nigerians would have known the kind of gang we currently parade as political and religious leaders. South African airport security spokesman Solomon Makgale confirmed a police investigation was underway but declined to give details. The aircraft was temporarily impounded, but was allowed to return to Abuja about four days after the initial arrest of the plane because the Nigerian government reached out to its South African counterparts, ostensibly to douse the tension and keep the fact away from the public. The arrested passengers apparently told officials they were acting on behalf of the Nigerian intelligence service, and they provided documentation confirming they had come to South Africa to buy weapons. However, the National Conventional Arms Control Committee, which has to approve the import and export of any weapons as well as issue permits for such transactions, was not aware of any applications in this case. It is also not clear whether the Israeli passenger was an intelligence operative or an arms dealer. A spokesman for South Africa’s National Prosecuting Authority disclosed that the country’s investigators found the Nigerian arms buyers with invoices from two South African firms called Tier One and ESD. The invoices were for armaments and a helicopter. According to South Africa’s City Press, “In court papers, the NPA submitted evidence that Tier One is not registered with the National Conventional Arms Control Committee and is thus not authorized to enter into any agreements regarding the sale and/or rental of military equipment.” The paper further revealed, “The agreement between Tier One and ESD was concluded on September 8, three days after the money was seized at Lanseria.” We can safely conclude therefore that the arms deal was supposed to be a black market operation and therefore an illegal arm purchase. Such arms could end up anywhere either in the hands of the Niger Delta militants, political thugs and assassins, or even the dreaded Boko Haram militants…your guess is as good as mine. After much hush hush, it finally emerged that the bombardier jet involved in the illegal money laundering and purchase of black market arms belonged to Pastor Ayodele Joseph Oritsejafor the founding and Senior Pastor of Word of Life Bible Church, located in Warri, southern Nigeria, and currently the President of CAN. A statement released by the church on behalf of Pastor Oritsejafor reads in part “On behalf of Pastor Oritsejafor, we can confirm that although he holds an interest in Eagle Air, the aircraft in question is not operated by Pastor Oritsejafor. The aircraft was leased to, and is operated by Green Coast Produce Limited since August 2.” But, here are a few questions keen watchers have been asking. FAAN just over a year ago readjusted the laws guiding the usage of non-scheduled commercial operators. The law according to the Nigerian aviation authorities seeks to regulate and stop the abuse by private jets owners, who turn their planes over for commercial purposes illegally. Therefore one should ask, why was Pastor Ayo private jet leased out for a supposedly commercial purpose since August 2nd 2014 according to him? Recall also that private jet owners were not only barred from leasing their planes out for commercial purposes, they were also barred from carrying people other than their family members. The above reasons alone are enough to indict Pastor Ayo and his co-travelers. Now, let’s come to the issue of CAN. Pastor Ayo is first and foremost the senior Pastor and founder of a church and we all remembered his initial claims that the plane was a gift by some unnamed members of his church. If that is the case, why is the church not in the forefront of defending his latest escapade? Why drag CAN into his private church business? I am a Christian and as such an affiliate of CAN. Pastor Ayo should be left alone to defend himself and his private business without dragging CAN alongside himself. Why has CAN become the private enterprise of one man? CAN have existed before the advent of Pastor Oritsejafor and should be left alone to do what it was established to do. The statement supposedly released in the defense of Pastor Oritsejafor by a certain Sunny Oibe on behalf of CAN is not only reprehensible, it is asinine; it is disgraceful and it is totally unbecoming of what an organization representing the body of Christ should ever have thought of, let alone made public. It was not only acerbic and jejune, it was a classic gutter styled gobbledygook that no self respecting Christian body should ever be associated with no matter the level of “provocation”. Please don’t bring the “Touch not mine anointed” crap here. For your information, severally we have been reprimanded to “touch not mine anointed” but is this the correct application of this scripture? In which context was this phrase used in the Bible? It can be found in Psalm 105:15 and repeated in 1Chronicles 16:22. That passage was written to praise the works of God when He brought out the children of Israel from Egypt and saved them from several dangers, even though they were few in number. It was never about a pastor or a church leader. It was written to praise God in taking care of a called out people. Anointed vessels are men who allow God to do his bidding through them. Note that those people who do his bidding must be “called out” and what is the “church”? The root word for church is “Ecclesia” which simply means “the called out ones”. Therefore, that passage can also mean “touch not the church”. Do NOT be deceived. It was never written to protect or immune “penterascality” or ‘pastopreneurs’ from honest criticism. It was written as a mark or seal of God’s protection upon His chosen ones and His chosen ones are his body, His church. Pastor Ayo will do well to resign his position as CAN President and face his calling squarely. He has done more to harm the reputation of CAN by his several actions and careless speeches. It is written in 2 Timothy 2:4, “No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.” In 1 Peter 4: 17 it is written, “For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begins with us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?” To serve God is to serve his people. Let Pastor Ayo search himself, has he been true to the one who called him? Let God be true, let all men be liars. Pastor Oritsejafor’s ownership of the jet has raised several questions in the past. One of which is that the plane seized by South African officials is actually registered in the US for use only as a private jet, not for commercial purposes. Another issue is does Pastor Oritsejafor owns more than one jet? In 2012, he claimed that members of his congregation presented him with the gift of a jet. However, the registration number of the jet detained by South African authorities differs from the registration details for the jet purchased by Mr. Oritsejafor’s congregants. In response to criticism of his acquisition of a private jet, the pastor had argued that he needed the jet to enable him to travel widely for events related to his ministry. The question then is whether the commercial leasing of a private jet is part of Oritsejafor’s ministry? Nigerians are watching the unfolding dangerous drama and waiting with a baited breath. How will the Federal Government of PDP led by Goodluck Jonathan handle this case? Will they prove their detractors right that the government of Jonathan have always known, collaborated with and have been covering up sponsors of terror in Nigeria, or will President Jonathan rise to the occasion this time? Time will tell, but remember history is being written for the future by every present action and deliberate but highly noticeable inactions. The news about Sekem master MC Galaxy being assaulted by a Washington DC promoter, Spotlite Entertainment, hit the internet a few days ago and a huge debate about what led to the assault followed on comedian Chief Obi’s Instagram page. The video of the shameful incident which happened out in DC on the 12th of September, has just been released. It is wrong on every level for a promoter to lay his hands on any artist. Our Nigerian artists should be treated with utmost respect. In fact, treat people with respect! Hope other American promoters watch this video and know WHAT NOT TO DO when you invite an artist to perform. It is your responsibility to promote your show! And we wonder why these artists have bodyguards? Thankfully, MC Galaxy is okay. He performed in Houston the following day. Watch the video here |

‘Mothers are like gold; fathers are like mirror’ says a popular African adage. As Tiwa Savage‘s mom celebrates her birthday today, the popular Nigerian diva took to social media to share a sweet message about her childhood and the role her mom played in it. Growing up she was teased and taunted for her dark skin tone and skinny figure. However, what impressed and encouraged her the most was her mother’s response: “During my high school days I was bullied for several years, I would get jumped on the bus, head flushed down the toilet and so on, it got so bad that I did something drastic and life threatening because I was so depressed. My mother was called to school on several occasions and each time she came she would ask to see the other students bullying me and would always pray for us all. Of course they would joke and laugh but my mother was always so calm and reserved and she would take me home, cook me Naija food (we were living in london at the time) and she would make me realize how loved I was and how rich my culture is, how beautiful I am being a Nigerian girl (I was bullied for being African, skinny, dark and I had a strong naija accent) what my mother didn’t do was fight, shout or argue with the other girls or their parents (who were at times very rude and disrespectful) Instead she showered me with love and reminded me where I was from. One of the many reasons why she is my hero, my role model, biggest inspiration, my best friend, my mummy @celiasavage I celebrate you today on your birthday. Anyone that has met you has experience what a calm, shy, gentle but very hip mummy you are. The only doromegasupermummy on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook , keek etc lol I love you mummy, I love you with my soul. Thinking of what you have done for me brings tears to my eyes. I only pray I can be half the mother you are to me to my children. I prayed to God this morning to grant us a couple more forevers. Happy Birthday Sexy mama. A man in Saudi Arabia, 22, who's had nosebleed once a month for three years sought the help of doctors only to find a white bony mass about half of an inch growing inside his nasal cavity. That's right! When dentists examined it, they confirmed it was an extra tooth. The dentist also found it remarkable that the tooth had been undiscovered for so long. It is thought that the man may have had a mesioden - a common type of extra tooth found near the incisors. Dr. Hellstein explained that around a third of them develop upside down and can travel towards the nose. Previous studies have found that up to 3.9% of people have more teeth that usual and they can erupt in unexpected places. No one is exactly sure why some people have this problem, but the report says, "causes of intranasal teeth include trauma, infection, anatomical malformations, and genetic factors." Extra teeth can appear in the palette as a normal looking extra tooth, or can grow into the nasal cavity in rare cases. Symptoms of such a problem include a blocked nose, headaches, nose bleeds, foul-smelling mucus and even external deformities of the nose. Dr. Hellstein said that he sees several cases every year, but that a tooth erupting in through the nasal floor is ‘unusual’. http://www.infonubia.com/2014/08/doctors-found-extra-tooth-growing-in-man-nose-in-saudi-arabia.html |

horlajide: Tnature you always been generous with your ratings in reviews yet being a little tightfisted few times will do little or no harm. I stumbled on tooxclusive.com's review some days ago, must say it was overly and unnecessarily harsh-almost sounded like the author had a personal vendetta with Dr. Sid(though I won't deny that some bits of truth are in the review). Having listened to many of the singles included in the album such as:Good observation Sir. Point taken. Thanks for adding your input. Happy New Year! |
Kennis Musis artiste, Jaywon, sealed his name in the history books of evergreen seasonal Nigerian tunes when he released the song 'This Year' in January 2013. The tune, which won song of the year at the recently concluded Headies Award, is going to be around for a while. It reminds of "Odun Lo Sopin" by the Good Women Choir, a popular song that plays in most homes in Southwestern Nigeria as the year winds down. This song is very prophetic with a danceable feel. This is my prayer for everyone who reads this. Not just you, but your friends and loved ones. Please groove enjoy and share with your friends! Straight to business. No time to waste time!! Surulere: This slow paced master groove by Dr Sid. It sets the right tone for this album. Featuring Don Jazzy on the hook took the track to a whole new level. The sound of the drums gives it the required feel for a street jam. Surulere means "patience is profitable" as Dr Sid sings about how profitable it is to be patient in this world of many vices. 9/10. Princess Kate: Produced by Baby Fresh for Mavin records. This is a decent jam of a faster pace than Surulere. A very catchy chorus "I want you to know girl, I cant live a day without you, I cant go nowhere without you..." The beat is a very simple one from baby fresh (one of the in house producers on the Mavin label). I think its a decent track. 7.5/10 Nwayi Oma: I'm not a big fan of auto tune and I felt it on the track all the way but I would not take the fact that since the production is laced with electronika then auto tune could be a good tool. Emma Nyra has a good voice and I would think she needs no auto tune for her voice. Nice tune … 7/10 Lady Don Dada: Don Jazzy on the hook on this one again. His semi-smooth voice kinda has its own effect on every track he features on. This groovy track starts off sounding electronika laced until the drums come in. The mixed feel of the beats is one of the reasons why Don Jazzy is one of the best at this business. The tempo on the verses definitely makes it a club jam. Head bumping track ….. 7.5/10 The D: This track has the full effect of the drums and Dr. Sid was referring to " " as in "doe" which we call "Money." Almost sounding like Timaya on this track though. This is not one of my favorite on the album but it is still decent. 7/10Talented: This song was already popular before the album release. At this point, the songs are beginning to sound similar to me which is the problem I have with Nigerian albums; they begin to sing about the same thing….a woman, a party, dance for me, or pop something. We begin to lose the story around track 5 on most albums. But if you appreciate production of beats and sounds on a track, this still works for you. 7/10 The chicken and Egg: The tempo drops on this one. One good thing about this album over the likes of "Baddest Guy Ever Liveth" has to be the sound engineering and mixing. Olamide's album, even though it was a dope, sounded like a mix tape straight from the studio. Chicken and egg is a sexual allegory with a little ambiguity depending on how you listen to it. 6/10 Oyari: I like this song especially because Tiwa Savage is on it ***winks. The song starts with a "praise and worship" beat….. properly mastered to deliver the necessary effect of a mid-tempo pop song. 8/10 Dr Lover: I have always said it that Ice Prince sounds better on other people's songs than his own and he deliver a powerful rap verse on this one. The Aboki delivery seems to be Ice Prince's trademark these days. If that is his strong point then there is no harm in staying in that line. And let me say his verse sets this track apart.....7.5/10 Baby Tornado: One of the tracks that hit the airwaves long before the release of the album. It is really nice track even though it has similar theme with "Talented" and "Princess Kate". Don Jazzy's input on the bridge no get mate though……and the whistling too. This is a super jam and wait till you hear the remix. You'll appreciate the guitars somewhere on this production if you listen closely…8/10 Kilon Wa: Switch in tempo, if you were listening to this album numerically. Drums well pronounced. Probably the only thing that stood out for me about the song. He basically sounded like D'Banj in my ears. 6/10 Chop Ogbono: The difference between a Don Jazzy Beat and that of any producer out there is how he invests in various sounds on a single track. Those sounds set aside the track even if the artiste is singing nonsense. Another producer that does as much would be D'Tunes. I don't know what "Ogbono"means oooo even my mind is telling several things it could mean. If you just wanna dance, this is a groovy track that will set you off real fast….7.5 Love Mine: Autotune aside, this is a feel good song. I took sometime off at this point and this song kept playing in my head. This is what good music should be like…..but I trust that majority will feel otherwise because it is not the regular "jukpa jukpa"…..8/10 Get Over Me: The title speaks for itself. That is exactly what the song is about. 14 tracks and we can effectively conclude that Dr Sids rap days are past him….He is more of a Naija Pop Artiste now! This song sounds like a chick favorite with a catchy chorus "My Boo is hotter than you". With similar progression like "Love Mine" but a little more electronika infused. 7.5 Last bus stop: Tempo raised again and I love how this song played out. Blaze is the producer and I must say this is good music and it is a sure way to bring the groove back. This would definitely be played at weddings in 2014. My favorite so far! 8/10 Siduction: This track was produced by Altim for Mavin. It's a decent tune….. Moving on! 7/10 Baby Tornado Remix: the original one was a blast and now Alexandra took it to another level …almost making me think the babe is Nigerian. She blended so well on her verse, that is what we call talent. Well done Love doctor, well done Don Jazzy, Well done Alexandra…8.5/10 Surulere Remix: Collabo explosion! With Phyno, Wizkid and Don Jazzy on one track, I hope you weren't expecting any less. I'd have to go learn Igbo language because of Phyno, he makes the language so sweet to the ears. Surulere has to be the highlight of this Album with a 10/10 in every aspect; Production, mixing, progression, theme and delivery....9/10 Chocolate: Don Jazzy your beat….Sarkodie massacre like kebab. Ice prince sef did no carry last on this wicked tune. Very nice track…8/10 Afefe: Also came out long before the album…… Afefe means "breeze" or "wind" if I am not wrong. Dr Sid sings to the babe that he wants to cool her down because she is too hot. Another very high tempo joint to round up a sweet work by Dr Sid. 7/10 Dr Sid is far from his HipHop roots and more of a Pop Artiste. You can tell he has grown through his music and he delivers a more matured sound. If this would be as successful as the "Over The Moon" album, only time will tell. Altogether, this is good music although I feel it does not carry varying theme and messages. (except for Surulere). Most tracks were centered around women and sex appeal and all those kind of things. I would always compare every album this year with Brymo's. In my opinion, that is the most complete Nigerian album I have heard this year. Only jesse jag's comes close. Siduction is definitely a good one y'all should get. You will enjoy the good feeling it brings. Airmark, I don't understand why you would close a thread that was opened at 1am for a thread that was opened 7hours later. This is the third time Nairaland moderators would do this to me and I think its highly uncalled for. Mods, please do the needful and remedy the situation. Thanks. https://www.nairaland.com/1569957/headies-2013-winners |
