Christianity Etc › Do Ghost Exist by tobechi74(op): 4:00pm On Jun 25, 2012
[b]DO GHOST EXIST

On the third of June 2012, I was online at my favorite informative site,www.nairaland.com, to get the latest news only to hear of a plane crash which took the lives of over hundred of Nigerians including that of my former vice chancellor—professor Onwulliri. This news made me be distressed for a week that i didn’t go online drink, follow the European cup competition etc for one week. I later broke my online fasting and went to the same site and was stunned to hear that the community which hosted the aircraft begged the government to ensure all the bodies are sought and conveyed out of their community and threatening to vacate the premises if a mass burial was conducted on the community. I thought there was an exaggeration on the news caption and so consulted the newspaper. Instead I read a rather surprising news headline which reads;
Community threatens to vacate land for fear of ghost.
I couldn’t help but force a grin. Could this be for real? Can a set of villagers who have been residing in a particular area abandon for an unidentified place just for the fear of the unknown?
This news refreshed my childhood questions about ghosts and their activities?
Do they exist?
Are ghost real?
What is their origin?
What do they eat? Etc

After much fruitless research, I ended the research and promised to ask God when I get to heaven.
My inquisitiveness on this issue arose again when a new student was admitted to our school, his name----Bayo.
Bayo was transferred from one of the popular federal government schools to my school. He was a loquacious boy who would gather us under a mango tree at the center of his school to narrate his experience in the previous school .Bayo explained that the only reason he had to depart his school was because of “strange happenings”
Bayo told us how the hostel mistress would walk every night to the dormitory with a cane in her hand which she used to whip students who were still awake after 10.00pm. One thing she was known for was her shoe hill which makes noise---koi-koi as she walked. Hence she was popularly known as Miss Koi koi.
Later, the students were informed on the assembly ground that she passed away in a mysterious way. The students received this news with mixed feelings. Majority of the students were happy that no one would disturb them after light out. However that night, students were stunned as they still here the footstep koi koi approach the dormitory the same way Miss Koi koi would but saw neither her face nor her sandals. This made students, conclude that Miss Koi koi was dead but her ghost still hang around the school compound.
Bayo also told us several personal night encounters like how they would go to class at night and see a chalk moving on the blackboard with no one holding the chalk. They would wait patiently to read the message and it read ‘’leave the class’’ and they would run to the hostel as fast as their legs could carry them.
Bayo narrated how doors would gently close and open but see no one, taps would run and stop.
From this tales i got three deductions.
Ghost exist
Ghost arise when human beings die mysteriously
Ghost moves at night.
Ghosts are not dangerous,
Bayo didn’t last for six weeks as he was later expelled in company with three students from the school for sneaking out of the school during break to smoke. At first he tried denying but when the other accomplice insisted he partook in the crime, he had to accept.
The expulsion news shocked the whole school. It was later revealed that bayo was expelled from his former school for similar reason.
The news did not only surprise me but i had to wipe away all my theories. I blamed myself for believing his fairly tales.

I have since stop making and erasing theories on ghosts and their activities. However the more I try to stop investigating about their existence, the more life gives me more reason to explore about them. The environment reminds me of my previous research. First was the drama series in super story titled Nneka.. I have also watched many local and foreign films centering on ghosts and their actions.
I have since come to realize that many of my so cold theories are wrong .ghost are subjected to individual belief which vary from one person religion, culture etc. to another. Ghosts are simply the spirits of a lost one. In some part of Ibo, ghosts are bad spirit which roams the earth and is assigned to each person by the devil. Similarly, the supreme assigned us a guardian angel called ‘chi’ to limit the activities of the ghost. Our destiny in life depends on how each fared. Hence, whenever the Igbo’s are about to eat, they pray and ask the spirits to join them in the meal while pouring a spoon of the food on the floor saying ‘Nke Muo’ meaning ‘for the spirit ’.
Other parts of Ibo see ghosts as spirit of the dead who were murdered while on earth .Such spirit would continue to hover round the earth disturbing his killers by appearing to them. The ghost could make them run mad or even kill them unless they confess. If they do, the people would then summon the village chief priest called ezeumuo.the ezemuoh function as a messenger who serves as an intermediary between the living and the dead. The ezemuoh would ask t he family of the murderer to fetch several items such as hen, goat, oil, kolanuts etc to perform a ritual. The ritual could last for several days. Then the corpse of the dead is dug while incarnation is recited. He then faces the corpse to the ground so he doesn’t see the earth. He also chains his foot to prevent the ghost from moving.

My faith as a Christian terms all these as superstitious belief and forbid me from believing in them. However, I am still yet to understand the biblical view on the existence of ghost. Most biblical denominations believe that heaven or hell are the aftermaths of death and give no room for ghost. Few believe in the existence of ghost citing gen 4; 9-12 as an illustration. The explained that when Cain killed Abel, the ghost of Abel cried unto the load since leviticles 17; 10-12 says the life of a being is in the blood. Others further illustrated how Saul consulted the soothsayer and summoned the ghost of Samuel. In the New Testament, the disciple thought Christ was a ghost when he walked on the water. On an occasion, he had to prove to the disciple that he was not a ghost by letting them touch his body and eating with them. if ghost were out of existence, he would have told them so.
On the transfiguration, Elijah and Moses appeared to Jesus in the mountain. Since Elijah had died many years before the birth of Christ, then it was their ghost that appeared.
Scientists are yet to prove their existence either. Nevertheless, that isn’t a yardstick for me. Since scientists are yet to prove some life phenomena like Gods existence. Their proof or otherwise on ghost existence wouldn’t change my view
These and many more confuse me on what to believe about ghost. I think I should rather add this question to the hundreds of questions I have written waiting to ask God when I get to heaven. What about you? Do you belief in the existence of ghost? Why? What is your cultural and religious view on it? Have you heard a story about one? Have you come across one before? Please share it.
