The only place you can really wear your human hair and full makeup to is Nigerian church, nobody else cares much lol. You cannot spray perfume at most workplaces. Minimalistic makeup and jewelry is the general work culture here. You can sha spend big money on expensive but minimalistic looking stuff sha, brand names and stuff.

Folafikemi:

Wow. Nice read there. Pls what phone did you have with you that works with their service there?

Secondly how much is required to open an account? Thanks

Thanks, Folafikemi, I use a Samsung galaxy...Huawei, iPhone , Motorola, Windows phone and a few others work here...you can check it up.
You don't need a minimum balance to open your accounts...at least the ones we opened didn't require. I assume you will be coming with your pof, so change to cad and deposit, or open a usd account.

LANDING GIST
PPR …. May 18th 2019
We had booked our flight with Ethiopian airline for 19th September with the mind of being flexible with the dates if either of us got a job before the said date. Well, we didn’t so we packed up our stuff and left naija on Gods appointed day.
We got all our bags from Musibau in Lagos, 5 23kg and 2 hand luggage for a family of 3 (an infant). Kept packing and repacking, weighing and re-weighing we thought we were good and then MIL sent packages to go with, we had to shed some of the things we had bought before to accommodate. Then we remembered winter boots and had to get a heavier jacket for me. Off we went to Tejuosho to get the things we needed and got thermal wears, jackets, socks, hats and gloves…. all great deals. I think Ejima or Okwy was the guy’s name. At the end of the day we had some stuffs outside that hadn’t made their way to bags. We had almost reconciled ourselves to pay for excess luggage
Day dawned bright and we booked an Uber, alongside a friend’s car to convey us to MMA. Traffic started to make us panic but thankfully we still made it in time.
MMA NAIJA
Na here drama take start o. So because of our plenty bags and hand luggage we needed a trolley, the porters outside said 2500…we tried bargaining dem no gree, okay so we paid and loaded all bags on it. On getting in, Quarantine said to bring one of our food bags (I had loaded two of our bags mostly with food and a few extras), I left them to sort it and went to check in… ET app kept giving error message when I tried on our way. Before I could get back to the bags I heard they issued one certificate and collected 3k…just like that! Oh these people just ripped my innocent husband chai. Okay o…next stop to weigh the bags. All of them were over 23kg…so we started re-arranging stuffs till we had only 2 excess bags, the guys around said we should settle them 30k to let it pass, hubby agreed. As we got to the counter the ET guy said since we have a connecting flight to Calgary it cant work, we have to upgrade the luggages…thank God we hadn’t parted with a whole 30k. So with just about 45mins to boarding, hubby ran up to their office to make payment for the 2 bags…ended up paying about 45k for it. By the time he came back we had little time to say goodbye to the fam. Thank God for that eventually because I didn’t get to see my mum cry…I later heard she was inconsolable, poor woman…I’m her only daughter and baby.
A family friend had sent an officer to help us before, the guy just took over from here…led us through customs and immigration on fast lane and into the plane we went.
FLIGHT
Flight was okay…ate most of the food all the way to Toronto except one I didn’t really understand. Bassinet was provided for my baby and we sat in front on both legs to accommodate it. It was only on Aircanada we didn’t have a place for baby and I had to carry her through the 4 hour flight. No free food here but I was already prepared for that as we had heard the gist before, got coffee and snack while waiting at Toronto…juice and water was free sha so I took, local girl cannot comman die of hunger na.
LANDING
So we landed at Toronto 8.30am Friday morning 20th and went through immigrations…I was told to sit with my baby while hubs stood with the lady, and then we were later called to sign and PR we were, the lady said that’s all, I said nope…seems youre forgetting something. I stood there o, said you haven’t welcomed me ma, she laughed and said Oh, ‘Welcome to Canada’, ehehn! Good geh.
On our way our we stopped by Newcomers stand and were told to do SIN, as we saw it was taking time and flight was in an hour we were told to do it in Calgary. Our mistake. We hadn’t even claimed baggages at this point, by the time we got to customs and had to present GTF we were told we may have missed our flight as it had just 10mins to spare…apparently the big carts were to be paid for and the smaller trolleys were the free ones, we didn’t know and had quickly hijacked the big ones, we had to pay a porter eventually about 16cad we changed at the airport. The guy helped us sha as we ran all the way to get boarding passes to Calgary but was placed on the next flight out.
CALGARY
So we landed Calgary and one of our bags was missing…another wahala. We searched and searched and had to report to AC, they found it eventually at Toronto with the manual tag from NGR and promised to send it to our address…which they did with an apology note. Grateful for my brother in law who came to pick us up from the airport, correct egusi and poundo was waiting for us at home. So because we landed on a Friday we couldn’t do much…it was midnight in naija but about 5pm local time…I managed to stay till about 8pm before going to sleep but for the next few days my husband was walking like he was on another planet…classic jetlag.
So Monday came and we did our SIN at service Canada, got SIM plans no phones, our phones are compatible, Opened accounts with RBC…newcomers package, checked out a few houses and settled on one (it was approved yesterday to move in next week, we sign the lease in 2days time), went to the registry for our health cards, visited the library for our library cards and even got one for my baby, visited CCIS and met with the SOPA counsellors (Dele, Aneta, Hasmik and Cecilia) was booked for other support services too, applied for CCB and visited Chinook centre .
It snowed today! My first time seeing it live apart from videos and on TV and I’m super grateful to God that something some people were born into and have taken for granted is a dream come true for me. This is putting it lightly. The journey is a huge lesson in Faith, patience and complete hope and trust in God.
I’ve been reading and silently participating on this nairaland thread since 2017…learnt a whole lot here, big thanks to Blackbuddy, Salford and other wonderful peeps always ready to contribute and answer questions.
NOV AOR family remains the best community ever!
Job search continues. We hope and trust God for the best.
Canada is ours.

Hi, please go to Ottawa. Pray about it anyway, but like maternal said first time i'm agreeing with him on this space, guy is ssooo extra cheesy ), there are several opportunities there, capital city and the rent is same as Calgary especially close to Gatineau..only higher tax which the difference can take care of.

phemocheee:
Good morning folks. Please I have a good problem and I'm losing sleep over it already.

I'm currently in Calgary, staying with my cousin for about 2 months now. Just recently, I got a job here in Calgary and I'm expected to resume tomorrow. Let me also say that the pay is quite good too. However, last week thursday, I got another job at Ottawa and the difference in salary is about 18k (gross)

Both jobs are of the same category, Senior IT Security role.

Now to the main point: I'm seriously contemplating relocating my wife and son to Ottawa but my cousin feels the increase in salary is not material enough to offset the cost of living @ Ottawa in short and long term. He's of the opinion that staying close to family and friends in Calgary will be beneficial to me in the long run.

Please for folks living in both cities, which do you think is the best choice at this point in time? Should I stay in Calgary or move to Ottawa?

P.S My wife is also into IT Security but she's yet to get a job in Calgary yet.

Thanks

The guy beside me ordered one burger like dat,the smile just dey enter my nose but Local man, sorry International man just arranged himself. My host was already waiting for me at the airport. Regina is a nice and quiet place, not a big city like GTA but i'll live. They have been gisting me about the cold here and i'm scared already. My host have been extremely nice to me. Been taking me around town, done with my SIN, health card has been processed even got a library card, account opening to be sorted tomorrow. Na accomodation and job remain.

Thats a thought too...but does that mean we will be under Quebec ?

TheCongo2:

Okay, Gatineau-Quebec and Ottawa are separated by a road. What if you elect Gatineau as a place of residence?
Travel / Re: Living In Canada/Life As A Canadian Immigrant by tobore187: 8:37pm On Nov 27, 2018
Not Quebec....The French factor undecided , howver Ottawa or Calgary/Edmonton are our choices for now. The subsidizing would have a very long waiting list yes?

I might most likely be landing to give birth or land with a very young infant.

TheCongo2:

In Which province are you planning to reside?
In Quebec daycares have low cost given that they are subsidized by the government.
In any case, as a new immigrant you should qualify for subsidized daycare in most of provinces. I know Ontario has subsidized daycare for people with low income. Given that you haven't filed any taxes, you will be considered as low income

Not boring at all! Welcome to Canada...abi no be so dem go greet me sef? cheesy.
I do have a few questions too....The food you cargoed, biko what items did you find absolutely necessary to carry?
Me i want to carry crayfish and stockfish o...if not on airline, i wonder what cargo will allow..
Secondly, two meals in 24 Hours! with an infant for that matter, you people did not hala for them? hope you had something to sustain you other than water sha?

And then to the seniors....i am terrified of the cost of daycare, its almost equal to what to pay for rent in some places. Biko, those with infants and toddlers, how are you people doing it? I cant stay home to be with my baby all day when i need to be working, and i cant be working and paying it all back into daycare....please who can tell me the way out ? tenkiu

Interesting einsteino....funny enough my husband was telling me earlier today to try and go outside for periods of five minutes at a time to receive sunlight as i work indoors the entire day/daylight. I laughed it off, now i know better. Thanks.

einsteino:

The science on this states that our body system has a surprising dependence on natural light; metabolism, digestion, hormones, cell generation, DNA repairs etc all have links to how much sunlight we get and the cycle. For some, the effects are marginal, while for others it could be full blown especially when it comes to mood, so much that there is something called Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D) caused by shorter days in winter. The most direct relationship between natural light, our mood and biology is found in a brain chemical in our neurons called serotonin: which is responsible for our feel good. Inshort anti-depressant drugs work by inducing increased serotonin generation, anyways the literature suggests the brain generates less serotonin when we get less natural light. So, I am guessing the psychological change is in my boisterousness.

I am kind of curious about that last part....how many hours of daylight are you having now and how much of a shock has it been?

einsteino:

The cold in most canadian cities is not something you cant tolerate if you dress for it, and if your work is indoor, ultimately you would just commute from a warm house to a warm office by driving a warm car - via a snow stormed road though(hopefully you arent as broke as me and dont need to wait buses in the cold). Anyways there are people living in Yukon, though i dont know how they manage to call that living, to me i think it's more like battling the elements.

What I least anticipated is how much effect the short day light can have on one, I am beginning to suspect that it's affecting me psychologically.

thanks a lot Salford. I think i just may settle for the easy way out for now.

salford1:

I know there use to be lots of Occupational Health and Safety jobs during the oil boom in Alberta. Not sure how the industry is fairing for OH&S professionals now. This is an industry I know very little of. All I remember was that people use to take a one year certificate course at a college in one of the maritime provinces then end up in the oil sand. I can't recall the name of the certificate neither do i remember if they needed professional certification.

However, Chemists seems to be doing well here. You might have to take up junior level roles to begin with. Contact ferfer on this thread or the canadian dependant visa thread. He is a Chemist and got a job in BC not long after he landed. He might be able to give you some pointers.

Since you already have some experience in customer services, it might be easier to tow that path. You could get into government or private companies as a customer service rep then work your way up through internal vacancies to an higher position.

I have never lived in Ottawa so I can't comment on housing for the city, but cost of housing is fair in Calgary. Maybe from $850/month (basements and single room) upwards. Note that an apartment renting for less than a thousand might not be as good another renting for say $1300 per month. You would have to view and much depends on your pocket and what you can afford. Not sure about how common IT/ Business Analysts jobs are in Calgary.

Good day seniors in the house, Started from page one, thread one here as advised and its been a wealth of information and useful tips gathered so far.
I had to jump pages to get here because i have a burning question to ask, questions really but i'll drop these first.
** I have searched on Indeed but Health and Safety jobs doesnt seem to abound there. From ground experience please what is it like over there?
I graduated SLT (Chemistry), did CIEH 2 and 3 and was intending to continue on the HSE pathway when we get to canada but i don't know if its a ready market and what the pay is like(Calgary or Ottawa) also if i have to write some other certifications to be able to start at all in that career pathway considering i don't have previous work experience here in Nigeria.
*** I have five years banking experience (Cashier and Customer service) and jobs abound on indeed though varying wages in the different provinces and companies. Should i just continue in that path, write a couple of professional certifications to establish myself and just forget i ever read sciences? Is there much room for career advancement there?
****My husband is an IT support person/Project management/BA, from experience where do you think its best to live in...ottawa or Calgary? I sort of prefer Ottawa for jobs for him but houses don't come really cheap there for beginners like us, Calgary seems to ace in that and we have family there.

Please kindly advise.
