Naira scarcity brings out the worst in Nigerian banks

The ongoing cash crisis afflicting the nation has brought out the worst in many Nigerian banks.

At the same time, some of the banks have risen to the challenge and have earned accolades from their customers.

A naira redesign policy introduced by the banking industry regulator, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has led to the withdrawal of old high-value notes of N200, N500 and N1000 from circulation.

The plan was for the money to be instantly swapped with the newly redesigned notes of the same denominations.

However, this plan has not worked out seamlessly as envisaged. While the old notes have been largely mopped up from the public, replacement has been scarce to come by, leading to situations where citizens are left stranded even though they have money in the banks.

Bank customers daily besiege the Automatic Teller Machines (ATMs) to obtain the elusive new Naira notes.

Tempers flare in the process and fights ensue after people have been in the queues for hours without getting the required cash.

There have been cases of full-fledged violence in a few locations, such as Ibadan, where many ATMs were vandalized, Abeokuta, where one protester was shot on Tuesday, and Benin, among others.

The banks have been trying to manage the situation as best as they can. Many have optimized their online platforms, especially as people have turned to those online platforms to transact business following the paucity of cash.

Even petty traders, such as sugar cane hawkers and ‘Ewa Agonyin’ sellers, now use digital platforms to accept payment. Trending clips show some street hawkers using POS to accept payments.

However, in this resort to digital platforms, the lapses of some of the banks hitherto believed to be strong have been magnified.

Among this lot are Guaranty Trust Bank and Zenith Bank, two of Nigeria’s foremost banks. They have both taken turns to trend for days on Twitter largely for appalling service delivery.

Customers complain of unusual delays in the implementation of their online transactions.

The online service platforms of the two banks simply buckled under pressure and became unavailable to their customers on many occasions.

Internet banking platforms, mobile apps, USSD platforms and even customer care platforms were inaccessible for hours, forcing their customers to resort to social media to vent their spleen.

A frustrated customer, @Are_omotoyosi wrote: “Zenith bank should probably leave this banking thing and focus on Christmas decorations.”

Another, @dotunesNFT, wrote: “After all these Bank and Naira stress, one girl go come tell me make I come open Zenith Bank Niboooo😂😂😂 if I catch you ehn, iku pa e”.

When online trolling did not seem to be working, some of their customers became violent and reportedly threatened the safety of staff.

In a trending video, staff of a branch of the bank in Delta State had to escape from the premises by clambering over the back fence.

Zenith Bank on Tuesday confirmed the threat to its staff and shut down some of its branches in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and other states across the country.

The News Agency of Nigeria, which monitored developments across the FCT and environs on Tuesday, reports that the bank’s branches were under lock and key in all the locations visited.

GT Bank is not any better. A quick check revealed that the bank has generated over 600 tweets in the last one hour as this report was being filed.

Most of the comments have been negative and related to poor service.

On the other hand, a couple of banks have earned the accolades of their customers.

A few of the banks that have been raved on Twitter as doing well in the ongoing crisis include Sterling Bank, SunTrust, Opay and Fidelity.

Sterling Bank, SunTrust and Fidelity have tried to keep their online platforms working fairly well and have tried to maintain some sanity in their offline service delivery.

There are a few clips online of the banks maintaining orderliness in their ATM queues and also occasionally offering their customers refreshments during peak hours.

Sterling Bank also announced a waiver of all personal account transaction fees to encourage its customers to engage their digital channels.

Opay has also managed to withstand the pressure. Customers reported seamless transactions even at times when the big banks were struggling with network-related challenges.

For Nigeria to fully embrace the cashless culture, many of the banks will have to reexamine the robustness of their digital infrastructure as this ongoing challenge has exposed the inadequacies of their existing infrastructure.

The lady was very happy with the surprise cake and this showed on her face as she beamed from ear to ear.

However, the second surprise of the young man kneeling down and thrusting a ring towards her was not welcomed.

She quickly rushes to the young man to get him to stand up, saying they had only just met and could not possibly be talking about engagement three months into their coming together.

The man persists, hoping to get her to change her mind, as the church members cheer them on.

This infuriates the lady who lashes out at the man, first hitting him on the chest and then in the face. She throws away the cake which struck the lover boy.

Elderly church members step in to stop any further assault.

The lady can be seen explaining to church members that they had just recently met and that the man just wanted to embarrass her.

Most of the online reactions are, however, against the lady. Many argued she could have handled it better.

A video of a woman allegedly sex-chatting with someone believed to be her boyfriend while in bed with her husband and baby has taken Twitter by storm.

The footage captured by a security camera inside the couple’s room shows the woman lying awake with her smartphone in her hands, while her husband is fast asleep beside her.

Their child is lying between them, but is engrossed in a smartphone, as well.

The lady is seen casting a furtive glance at her sleeping husband before opening her legs and parting her panties to take a snap.

In the duration of the short video, she did that twice.

The clip is believed to have originated from Mexico, but it is not clear who originally uploaded it.

It is speculated that the husband installed the hidden camera upon suspecting the wife of cheating on him in their home.

Upon review of the camera footage later by the husband, he found that no strange man came into their home.

The camera however captured this interesting scene which tends to confirm the husband’s suspicion that there is someone else enjoying the attention of his wife.

The clip has generated a lot of reactions online.

Many argued that it is purely circumstantial and does not conclusively prove that the lady was cheating, while others disagreed, wondering why she had to cast a look at her husband to be sure he was sleeping before snapping her nether region if not that she was cheating.

Others turned it into humour.

Someone humorously suggested that the lady was only exercising her right to see what she looked like down there.

A Twitter user, Phil Rivera suggested that the woman was chatting with an online gynaecologist.

She wrote in Spanish: “Do not think badly, she had an online appointment with the gynaecologist.”

Another tweep, pretending to be the lady in the clip, jumped on that line and tweeted: “Calm down, people! I had an online appointment with a gynaecologist.”

The lady, identified as Queen Minajos on Twitter, uploaded the pictures on Twitter herself with the caption: “Living my best life”

The pictures showed that she wore nothing but sellotaped an empty packet of sweets on her boobs and her nether region.

She completed the look with a pair of pink stilettos.

Even for a liberated society like South Africa, the action appeared overboard. A crowd of people lined up the frontage of the shopping mall to behold the spectacle in disbelief.

Apart from the ruckus she caused at the mall, she later posted it on Twitter, sparking another round of reactions. Reacting to a Tweep’s criticism, she wrote: “I pay my billz.”

Social media outraged at video of man flogging his father

A heartbreaking video has shown the moment a young man resorted to flogging someone believed to be his father.

The clip shows the man wielding two canes and vigorously lashing the elderly man until he runs inside the house.

Other people present at the scene made feeble attempts to stop the assault.

It is not clear what led to the incident. It was speculated that it had to do with the issue of infidelity on the part of the father, but this could not be ascertained.

Many people commenting on the video opined that whatever the father did, there was no justification for the young man to raise his hand against him so viciously.

Some viewers also queried whether the man was actually the father of the aggressor, but others pointed out that even if he was not, so long as he was old enough to be, he ought not to have raised his hand against him.

The elderly man could not fight back, but he could not have withstood the strength of the young man anyway even if he tried. He had to run into his room for shelter.

The exact location of the incident is not known, but it is clearly an African setting.

Radio station manager filmed beating female presenter over advert money (Video)

A trending video on Twitter has captured the moment a radio station manager manhandled a female presenter right in one of the offices of the station.

The station manager of Kanungu FM 91.5, Uganda, Twinamatsiko Nelson was filmed brutally beating up an employee identified as Tumuramye Anita Rose.

The fight was already ongoing when a coworker who had his camera recording opened the office door and found the station manager pinning down the female presenter.

The lady can be seen struggling to get up from under the station manager.

Reports indicated that the female presenter brought in a gig and asked for a 12% commission which the management of the FM station agreed to pay.

After the client had paid the money through the female presenter, she allegedly failed to remit the balance of 88% into the station’s coffers but was advertising the client’s products on the FM station anytime she was hosting her show.

This forced the manager to approach the FM presenter for answers, but in the process, tempers flared and they resorted to physical combat.

Before the incident, Anita Rose was the station receptionist and the cashier until the manager relieved her of the additional duties arguing that the roles of a cashier, receptionist, radio presenter and station manager were too many for one person.

After the fight, Anita Rose has been suspended from conducting some of her station programmes.

Kanungu FM Radio station is reportedly owned by a popular politician who is the current minister for ICT, Hon Chris Baryomunsi.

Scary moment stage collapsed during choir ministration at a crusade


A trending video has shown the scary moment a stage and the canopy over it collapsed on a group of choristers rendering a special number at an open-air crusade in Ghana.

The details of the event were not included by the original poster.

The clip just shows the ministration already underway with the choir performing animatedly.

Suddenly the stage comes crashing down together with the choir on it and the musical instruments. The light supply to the crusade was cut at the same time apparently because the crash affected the wiring.

It could not be ascertained if anyone was hurt in the incident.

Passenger’s phone was recording as 72 passenger plane crashed in Nepal (Watch)

The last moments of passengers on the ill-fated Nepal flight and the moment the plane crashed were unwittingly captured by one of the passengers who was filming the city below them as the plane descended.

From the footage, it appeared the crash took the passengers unawares as there appeared to be no panic on the faces of the passengers captured by the phone camera some minutes before the crash.

The camera pans around the cabin where passengers appeared to be discussing and then suddenly there was a short cry and a shockwave ending in flares of fire and billows of smoke.

It appeared all the passengers and crew on board the flight perished in the crash.

Hundreds of rescue scoured the hillside where the plane carrying 72 people from the capital Kathmandu, went down.

Yeti Airlines, which operated the flight, said there were 72 people onboard – 68 passengers and four crew.

According to an airport official, the foreign nationals on board included: one Australian, one French, one Argentinian, four Russians, five Indians, two South Koreans and one person from Ireland.

The plane crashed between the old and new Pokhara airports in central Nepal.

Footage shared on social media, which appeared to be shot just after the crash, showed raging flames on the ground and black smoke billowing into the sky from debris strewn across the crash site.

Another unverified clip shared online showed a plane flying at a low altitude over a residential area banking sharply to the left, followed by a loud explosion.

The wreckage was on fire and rescue workers were trying to put out the blaze, local official Gurudutta Dhakal said.

The twin-engine ATR 72 aircraft was flying from Kathmandu, the Himalayan country’s capital, an airport official said. After news of the crash broke the country’s prime minister, Pushpa Kamal Dahal, called an emergency cabinet meeting.

The weather was clear, said Jagannath Niroula, spokesman for Nepal’s Civil Aviation Authority.

The craft made contact with the airport from Seti Gorge at 10:50 a.m. (0505 GMT), the aviation authority said in a statement. “Then it crashed.”

The crash is Nepal’s deadliest since March 2018, when a US-Bangla Dash 8 turboprop flight from Dhaka crashed on landing in Kathmandu, killing 51 of the 71 people on board, according to Aviation Safety Network.

At least 309 people have died since 2000 in plane or helicopter crashes in Nepal, – home to eight of the world’s 14 highest mountains, including Everest – where the weather can change suddenly and make for hazardous conditions. The European Union has banned Nepali airlines from its airspace since 2013, citing safety concerns.

According to the information uploaded with the video, the wife invited her sister to assist her discipline her philandering husband.

The clip shows the two sisters restraining the man while his wife slaps and punches him repeatedly.

At some point, the husband tries to break free and throws a few punches, but the two women press him against the wall, giving the wife an opportunity to deliver more punches and a few kicks.

Satisfied he has received enough beating, they let go of the man and the women walk casually away from camera view. The man shows no sign of seeking revenge.

Outrage as lady with her friends strip, flog side chick of boyfriend in his house

Uganda is in outrage following the emergence of a series of video clips showing the torture and humiliation of a pretty young girl accused of befriending another lady’s boyfriend.

The clips show how a group of friends heavily descended on a young girl who is said to be their friend.

Reports indicated that the main chick lured the hapless girl to the boyfriend's flat.

The girlfriend also invited other friends who were all armed with canes. A long kitchen knife was also seen on the floor, but thankfully, it was never used.

The victim, identified as Pretty Nicole, had her top and bra torn off her body as a number of girls flog and drag her all over the living room with her braids.

She never lifted a finger against them. She only begged them, but it made no difference in the flogging.

Not done, they take her outside the building and continue the beating. One of the ladies fetches a bucket of water and pours it on the bare body of the victim as they continue to flog her till she runs towards the back of the fenced building out of the camera view.

The vengeful ladies uploaded the clips and they went viral, causing outrage.

Human rights groups have now waded into the matter and an unconfirmed report indicated that the police have been involved.

Customer shoots robber dead at restaurant in Houston

A customer at a restaurant, Ranchito Taqueria, shot and killed a man who robbed diners at the restaurant in southwest Houston on Thursday night.

The incident reportedly happened just before 11:30 p.m. on Thursday at the restaurant on S. Gessner near Bellaire Boulevard.

Houston police said the armed man in a mask came inside the restaurant, demanding money and wallets from customers. However, as he was leaving, one of those customers shot him multiple times.

He died on the spot. The customer who shot him retrieved the stolen money and returned it to the robbed customers.

No one else in the restaurant was injured. Investigators said the suspect ended up not having a real gun.

The incident was caught on surveillance video

Houston police later declared the customer wanted for questioning, prompting his attorney to reach out to the police.
