The war is not nuclear. We all know the outcome of nuclear war, and there are no winners.
This is NATO vs. Russia ONLY. I dont want to deal with Russian pseudo-allies like China and American allies like Japan.
Russia faces three major problems that inhibit it from anything close to a victory. I’ll explain each of them.

Aging technology: Though Russia has a large, impressive arsenal of tanks and artillery, most of them were made by a different nation for a different doctrine in a different time. Most of their tanks and planes were built by the Soviets, with the purpose of overwhelming force. During the Cold War, more or less they had a doctrine of mass assault. Overwhelm your enemies, and losses don’t matter. That was the philosophy of the Soviets. Nowadays, that doctrine doesn't work. In this modern day and age, numbers aren't everything. See the Gulf War. Iraq had the 5th largest army in the world, and in just 7 months, that army was annihilated, mostly by the US and NATO forces. While the coalition lost on 200 troops, Iraq was permanently devastated, and was removed from the great powers of the Middle East. So even though Russia has a sizeable force of machinery, just like Iraq, though they are numerous, they are fundamentally inferior to NATO equipment. Russia has no mass produced plane like the Eurofighter Typhoon or the F-35, nor does it have tanks like the Leopard or M1 Abrams.

No buffer zone: For an extremely long time, Russian interactions with it’s neighbors was based on the need for a Russia buffer zone. This remains true today. In order for Russia to fight an offensive war, they need a buffer. Russian population and industry centers are all located to the West of the Ural mountains. The reason nations like the US have been so successful in projecting power is how far removed they are. The US when it wages a war never has to worry about an attack on the homeland. Though fighting on home territory has it’s advantages and disadvantages, one cannot deny that when a war is being fought in someone else’s backyard, the industrial strength of a nation has a greater chance of staying intact. Not only does Russia lack a buffer, but they lack the capability to defend the home front. In the skies, the US alone outnumbers Russia 4 to 1. In modern war, air dominance can make or break a military campaign, and with 1/4 air power as the US ALONE, there is no hope for Russia to maintain an aggressive assault on Europe. Even fighting over home skies on defense, it is still likely that Russia will take much worse casualties than the US. With American and NATO air dominance set, the coalition can destroy any fledgling attempt at a Russian war machine, and without industry, a nation has no hope of survival. I can already hear people talking about how potent Russian air defense is, and I’m here to tell you, it isn't what it seems to be. Though they have an impressive number of SAMs, they aren't as accurate as one would think. In a confrontation over Syria, an Israeli F-35 (manufactured by the States) repeated bested the Russian S-400, which is the best in the Russian arsenal. American technology is just better. Period. But even if Russia somehow managed to bat off the US, they could still be economically crushed through the sea. The Russian navy is so weak, that NATO sea dominance is almost assured. With sea dominance comes economic starvation, which leads to the crumbling of industry, even if they manage to defend the skies.

Economic and strategic weakness: Though Russia is rich in natural resources, their ability to wage war is extremely limited. In order to take advantage of their resources and build a juggernaut of a war machine needed to take down NATO, you would need manpower and a strong economy. In Russia, these factors are painfully absent. NATO has a population of around a six hundred million people. Russia on the other hand, has about 140 million, giving NATO another 4 to 1 advantage. On the economic front, it gets even worse. Russia’s GDP is about 1.2 trillion USD, while NATO has an economy of 18.35 trillion USD. Even Italy has a larger GDP than Russia, despite having half the population, and having 1/60th of the land.

In the end, though this war would be horribly costly and not worth the price, when the smoke clears, it is abundantly clear who will be on top. NATO. Russia is not the power it once was. It is economically inferior to even minor countries, its military is aging and decrepit, and they dont have the flexibility they used to have during the Cold War. Also, NATO has a trump card that Russia has no chance of besting.
