While I was in secondary school, most of my mates took Government, while a few others and I opted for History. We were only four; therefore, we had to take our classes at the History Teacher's office. Did you regrets it? I did same and today i'm a student of history and international relations. |

BinamRex: When I read online that the federal government banned the teaching of History in schools because it didn't want Igbos to read about the Nigerian Civil War, I believed it hook, line and sinker, even though I am a northerner.
I little bit of research would have made me realized the truth, but I was ignorant. I believed what other people said without finding out if they were right or wrong.
A school I was recently employed to teach Computer Studies wrote NECO exam, and the subject was History. I felt so stupid when I saw the question paper. If the government banned history, why is NECO, a government examination body allowing people to write History?
What I noticed over the years is that students don't like history because the subject is bulky. There are lots of dates and events to cram in history, and most students don't want to stress their brains.
I asked around today, and I realized that even though my school doesn't offer History as a subject, other schools do. Students from other schools that didn't have a NECO center, registered to write the exam in mine.
From the look of things, it is up to schools to decide if they want to offer history as a subject or not. This has got me thinking. What other lies have I been believing? Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State, on Thursday, faulted the removal of history subject school curriculum in Nigeria. The governor, who spoke in Makurdi at ‘Media Week and Communications Day 2021’ organized by the Directorate of Social Communications, Catholic Diocese of Makurdi, said the removal would prevent posterity from having knowledge of important events in the country. According to him, if the Federal Government fails to restore the subject, the state government would initiate law to ensure it is taught in Benue schools. The governor said: “Removing the subject History from the country’s school curriculum is an evil agenda to prevent the young generation from knowing their past. “Even if Nigeria won’t restore the study of history to the school curriculum, we in Benue will initiate a legislation to make history a compulsory subject in schools in the state. “Our children need to know how their forefathers lived on this land hundreds of years ago. Our children need to know what took place at Ushongo Hills in 1804 and why this land and our people were not conquered till this |

From the look of things, it is up to schools to decide if they want to offer history as a subject or not. This has got me thinking. What other lies have I been believing? Nigeria, during the 2009/2010 academic session, removed the study of history from primary and secondary schools’ curriculum. Official reasons are given then were, among others, that students shun the subject; only a few jobs were available for history graduates, and that there is a dearth of history teachers. Lamentably, Nigeria today has no official account of the 1967 to 1970 civil war. Seven years after, the government decided that the decision was wrong, and in 2017, the Nigeria Education Research and Development Council (NERDC) announced it was set to reintroduce history as a subject, beginning from the 2018/2019 academic session. The NERDC Executive Secretary, Prof. Ismail Junaidu, had stated that the curriculum would be standalone that would be taught from primary one to JSS III after the National Council on Education (NCE) had approved the reintroduction of the subject. In 2018, the Federal Government unveiled a new curriculum for the teaching and learning of the subject in basic schools across the country. The new curriculum was approved at the 63rd meeting of the NCE, which held in Kano in June 2017. |

History was removed from curriculum all over Nigeria and was recently reinstated by the National Assembly. Check google. |
