Holidaying Norway-based midfielder, Fengor Ogude, has been called up to join home based professionals as the Super Eagles preparations resumes on Sunday in Abuja ahead of the 2013 Africa Nations Cup holding in South Africa. Coach Stephen Keshi, who returned to the country from the United States on Tuesday also named another 23 Nigeria-based players that would battle for shirts ahead of the event that starts January 19. And while releasing the names Keshi insisted that only players who are in top form would make his team to South Africa. Keshi, who is perceived by many to have a selection problem, going by the number of players he has used in the last one year, declared that there is no such problem as players will naturally eliminate themselves based on form in the course of camping for the Nations Cup. He said, “What we want to get is a good mix of players who can help us do well at the Nations Cup. We want to win and I know we can but names don’t count in football anymore so anybody good enough should come and prove it. Objectivity is the watchword for the selection of players and I promise I will stick to it. The players are expected in Abuja on Sunday while training will effectively start on Monday. The list of foreign based players is expected to be released in the week leading to Christmas, as the team is expected to travel December 27 for the final phase of its camping in Faro, Portugal. http://www.punchng.com/sports/africa-2013-keshi-invites-fengor-23-others/ |

GHANAIAN President John Mahama Wednesday, urged his Nigerian counterpart, President Goodluck Jonathan, to facilitate prompt rehabilitation of the West Africa Gas Pipeline for electricity generation in his country. Mahama made the call when he paid a short visit to Jonathan at the State House in Abuja. The Ghanaian government has been trying to fix the damaged gas pipeline for some months without success. The gas pipeline damaged in October, sequel to a fatal accident during the re- commissioning of the Takoradi Regulating and Metering Station in Ghana, after repair work was completed. The West Africa Pipeline Company (WAPCo) shut-down its $1 billion pipelines following loss of pressure around the Lome segment in Togo, as a result of the damage caused by an unidentified vessel which came under fire from a Togolese naval ship few months ago. WAPCo subsequently stopped all gas deliveries to its onshore stations and was working closely with government agencies and other relevant organisations to investigate the cause of loss of pressure and ensure safety while rectifying the situation. The stoppage of gas deliveries to power stations affected service delivery at the generation, supply and distribution of electricity services in Ghana; hence, the current load shedding exercise in some parts of the country. Addressing State House correspondents after a closed- door meeting, Mahama said he was on his way to Equatorial Guinea for the Conference of African Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) Group of States. He said: “As you know, Ghana has been the chair of ACP since 2008 and we are supposed to be handing over to Equatorial Guinea. “And so, en-route, I decided to pass through Abuja to pay my respect to President Goodluck Jonathan considering the relations between Ghana and Nigeria. “I took the opportunity of the visit to discuss with him (Jonathan) the issue of West Africa Gas Pipeline. As you are aware, it got broken and there was an accident when they were trying to activate it. “So, I want President Jonathan to use his influence to get the pipeline back into operation as soon as possible so that Ghana can continue to receive Nigerian gas to power our electricity generation.’’ Mahama, who was declared winner of the last Friday’s Presidential elections in Ghana, said that his visit to Nigeria immediately after his victory at the polls was “significant’’. The Ghanaian president said he was also in the country to condole with Jonathan on the death of his younger brother, Chief Meni Jonathan. “After election, it is significant that this is the first country I should visit just to cement the relations between our two great countries. “I am here to pay my respect to President Jonathan and my condolences on the loss of his younger brother. I should have attended the funeral, but we were at the height of our election so, it wasn’t possible. “So, I came with the traditional drinks, as it is customary with Ghana and our contribution to the funeral, which I have presented to President Jonathan to be sent to the family back home,’’ he said. http://ngrguardiannews.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=107524:ghana-seeks-nigerias-assistance-on-damaged-gas-pipeline&catid=31:business&Itemid=562 |
Former deputy national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olabode George has lampooned former presidents in the country who were in the habit of criticizing the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan. He said it was wrong for the former leaders to criticize the President especially when they could reach him privatly to offer whatever suggestion they have for the development of the country. In a veiled reference to former president Olusegun Obasanjo, who is currently having a stand off with Jonathan, George called for better conduct from past presidents. But he did not mention name George, who spoke during the African Leadership Award ceremony, where he received an award for his contribution to the youth empowerment in Nigeria said those who had held the highest office in the land should not be in the habit of pulling down others. The award was organised by the All African Students Union (AASU). The PDP leader said, “past presidents don’t abuse people publicly. More so, to go to a foreign land to be denigrating your country. Don’t let us pull ourselves down.” He recalled that recently when former American President, George Bush was asked to comment on the Obama administration, he responded that all the occupants of the office were good men. While urging former Nigerian leaders to emulate their American counterparts, George, who is also the leader of the PDP in Lagos State said “there is indeed significant wisdom in the American tradition, wherein preceding leadership abstains in deferent latitude from criticizing a succeeding power. And what is more, it is virtually a taboo to criticize the leadership of the American nation upon a foreign soil.” Recall that in recent time, former President Olusegun Obasanjo had repeatedly criticized the Jonathan’s administration over the handling of nagging national issues, especially the Federal Government approach to the fight against the Boko Haram menace and security challenges in the country. However, the PDP chieftain stated that there was nothing wrong in criticizing the government of the day by the citizens, but that such criticism must be with the best of intentions and not to pull down the president, adding that “as patriots, we should help our President to succeed. He cannot do it alone. Surely, we are not going to cuddle him. That itself will be disservice to the nation. We must point the ills of the society with all decency and sincerity.” He said leaders could be subjected to critical appraisals with a view to helping those in authority and assisting the pace of development without “ being petty or nasty.” Furthermore, George said “ we can advice him (Jonathan). We can recommend to him because he is not perfect neither are we. But we cannot assume the arrant posture of curative omniscience. We cannot condemn with deliberate mischief and chest beating sense of infallibility.” http://sunnewsonline.com/new/cover/attack-on-jonathan-bode-george-blasts-obj/ |

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and 34 other revenue generating agencies have short-changed the federal government for N113.8 billion as the agencies only remitted N11.8 billion or 9.41 per cent of their internally generated revenue (IGR) of N125.6 billion in the outgoing 2012 fiscal year. The Committee of Finance of the House of Representatives made this startling revelation in its report over poor remittance of internally generated revenue to the Consolidated Revenue Fund by the government agencies. The report, which will be presented to the House in due course, was exclusively obtained by LEADERSHIP yesterday. According to the report, some of the agencies indicted over inadequate revenue remittances include the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), PENCOM, NIMASA, AMCON, JAMB, WAEC, NECO and NEPZA (Nigeria Export Processing Zone). Other indicted agencies listed in the report are FIRS, BOI, CAC, NBC, NCC, NDIC, NIPOST, ITF, FRCN, NAN, NTA, NAFDAC, UBEC, NEXIM, NASENI, NAIC, FRSC, FHA, TERTFUND and NIGCOMSAT, NIPRD, RMRDC, NOTAP and NTI. The other agencies are National Automotive Council, National Film and Video Censors Board, Nigeria Shippers Council, National Sugar Development Council, Financial Reporting Council, National Development Council, Nigeria Nuclear Authority, Federal Mortgage Bank and Oil and Gas Free Zone. Condemning the agencies, the committee said it found their action (inadequate remittances) unacceptable. According to the committee, "The ministry of finance, as monitors of government investments, has complained about the inadequate remittances of government-owned agencies to the treasury. "This led to the issue of a circular instructing all agencies to remit 25 per cent of their gross collections to the treasury and retain 75 per cent for their operations. The committee has discovered that this is not being complied with, given that the agencies are still spending most of what they generate. "It was also discovered that these agencies are not preparing and submitting their audited accounts as at when due in contravention of the provisions of the Fiscal Responsibility Act". The report that the majority of the internally-generated revenue (IGR) was not captured in the revenue framework submitted by the Ministry of Finance. It further disclosed that the refusal of certain agencies to appear before it might delay the passage of the 2013 revenue framework, saying that it might be forced to use its powers to compel the affected agencies to appear. Proposing drastic action against the errant agencies, the report said that the committee intended to submit a preliminary report to the leadership of the House with far reaching recommendations which would compel these agencies to make proper remittances to the treasury as directed by the Ministry of Finance or they might be reported to the anti-graft agencies. |

The Kano State Police Command, yesterday, announced the arrest of a ‘700-year-old spirit’ that engages in extorting money from the members of the public by imposing fear in them via telephone calls. Briefing journalists at the Bompai headquarters of the command, the Kano State Police Commissioner, Mr. Ibrahim K. Idris, explained that the ‘spirit’ turned out to be one Alhaji Nura Hamza, a resident of Kurna Asabe Quarters in the state. Idris explained that the suspect had taken advantage of the fear imposed in his victims by his status as a ‘spirit’ to cause them to source money and deposit same in a nearby bush, on an anthill, for spiritual purposes. He added that the complainant in this particular case, after depositing N800,000 as directed by the ‘spirit,’ decided to confide his fate in a relative, who quickly alerted him that he was being duped. According to him, following the report of the serial extortion to the police, detectives swung into action, luring the ‘spirit’ to the same destination on the anthill, where he had always directed his victims to drop the cash. The bait, Idris said, yielded the needed result as the ‘spirit’, upon his arrival, turned out to be a human being, adding that the suspect was arrested and taken into custody. He added: “When the suspect was interrogated, he confessed that he committed the offence. The cell phone used in intimidating and cheating the victims was found in the suspect’s possession.” The police boss said when the home of the suspect was searched, seven pieces of fake US$100, three bundles of paper cut to size of US $100, four MTN SIM cards, three motorcycles, a generating set and one mobile phone line (08037297557) were recovered as exhibits by the police. He disclosed that investigation into the incident was still on while adding that the suspect would be charged to court as soon as investigation was concluded. Idris urged the public to report to the police any receipt of strange phone calls from unknown persons making strange requests, adding that the police had devised means of unraveling and arresting such criminal activities. In a similar vein, the commissioner explained that the police had arrested 147 suspects in the last two weeks for alleged offences ranging from motor vehicle theft to possession of dangerous weapons and possession of fake local and foreign currencies. He added that during the same period, 60 rounds of live cartridges, 15 rounds of 9mm, one magazine with 30 rounds of live ammunition, a toy gun, one locally made revolver pistol and one locally made pistol were recovered. According to him, the gallantry, professionalism and commitment of his men in synergy with the Joint Security Task Force led to the reduction of crime and criminal activities in the state, adding that economic and social activities were gradually returning to normal. http://sunnewsonline.com/new/national/police-arrest-spirit-in-kano/ |
Just a mere look at the players Nigeria have got, both the home and the foreign base players. Shall we be expecting the same result we used to have i.e third or we should be looking forward to an achievement greater or lower than the previous tournament? |
Strong reasons emerged last night to show that the kidnap of Prof. Kaneme Okonjo, mother of Finance Minister and Coordinating Minister of the Economy Dr. Ngozi Okonjo- Iweala may have been geared towards instilling fear into the minister and distract her from carrying out reforms in the economy and the oil sector in particular. Reports that the kidnappers have made contacts and demanded $1 billion ransom are clear pointers that the abduction may well be connected to a threat received by the minister last month when she was told to slow down on her thorough check on subsidy payments or face dire consequences. Unconfirmed reports that the abductors have contacted the family and tabled a request of a whopping one billion dollars seem to weave a link between the kidnapping and the subsisting threat. In his immediate reaction to the incident, a Senior Special Assistant to the Minister, Mr. Paul Nwabuikwu, said in a statement, "at this point, it is difficult to say whether those behind this action are the same people who have made threats against the coordinating minister in the recent past or other elements with hostile motives. No possibility can be ruled out at this point." Okonjo-Iweala's mother who is the wife of His Majesty, Professor Chukwuka Aninshi Okonjo Agbogidi, the Obi of Ogwashi- Uku kingdom in Delta State, and a professor of medicine, was kidnapped on Sunday at about 1:30 pm from the husband's palace at Ogbe-Ofu quarters in Ogwahi-Uku by eight gunmen who stormed the palace in two Volkswagen Golf cars. The demand for a $1billion ransom, according to source, was relayed to the family of the woman yesterday, but this could not be confirmed. In the wake of the fuel subsidy scam, the minister is known to have put her feet down on thorough scrutiny of claims by marketers before payments will be made. At the end of the day, the Federal Government put the money fraudulently paid to marketers in the oil subsidy scam at N232.2 billion. Minister of Finance and the Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Dr. Okonjo-Iweala, made the disclosure on Monday, December 1 in Abuja at a press conference held on the ways of reinvigorating the country's ailing capital market. According to the minister, following the submission of the report of the Presidential Committee on the Verification and Reconciliation of Fuel Subsidy Payments headed by Access Bank boss, Aigboje Aig-Imokhuede, out of the N1trillion claims verified, it was established that N232.2billion was paid to fraudulent oil marketers. Noting that N29 billion due to the fraudulent marketers was held back by the government, the minister said the government would begin the payment of genuine claims starting from December with a view to averting man-made fuel queues which have been on since the issue of payments to oil marketers cropped up within the petroleum industry. In the absence of political abductions in this clime, the tendency is that the minister may well be seeing the manifestation of the threats issued her by disgruntled elements whose fraudulent means of feeding fat through dipping hands into the public till is being stopped. The onus is on security agents to unravel the abductors and bring them to book. http://m.naij.com/news/16699.html |
