European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Barcelona's Tito Vilanova Suffers Tumor Relapse by Tolexander(op): 2:09pm On Dec 19, 2012

(Reuters) - Barcelona coach Tito Vilanova has suffered a relapse on the cancer in his saliva glands, Spanish daily El Pais reported on Wednesday citing sources at the club.

The 44-year-old Vilanova, who underwent surgery on a tumor in his glands in November last year, stepped up from his role as assistant to replace Pep Guardiola as first-team coach for this season.

The La Liga leaders put out a statement cancelling a Christmas event planned with local media and president Sandro Rosell in the morning, saying the reasons would be given later.

"Very sorry to hear the news," Barca midfielder Xavi said on his official Twitter account, as messages of support flooded in.

Former tennis world number one Rafa Nadal said: "All my strength and support for Tito Vilanova! We are all with you to overcome this next hurdle."

Vilanova was out of action for around three weeks after surgery last year, but returned to the dugout to help Guardiola for the last six months of the 2011-12 campaign.

The quietly-spoken Catalan said the experience had left him with a different perspective on life, at his presentation in June.

"I had an important operation a few months ago," he said. "I spoke with the medics and my family about the job, but they all said I was perfectly okay and there was no problem.

"Having overcome this operation it gives me a different view on life. Perhaps, after what has happened, training Barca will be like kids play."

Vilanova has guided the team to the top of La Liga with 15 wins in 16 games, nine points clear of second-placed Atletico Madrid, and into the last 16 of the Champions League as group winners.

Barca have one game left, away at Valladolid in La Liga on Saturday, before the two-week winter break.

Politics › Oil Thieves Killed In Lagos Pipeline Fire by Tolexander(op): 10:52am On Dec 19, 2012
Scores of oil thieves were yesterday feared to have been burnt to death, while scooping fuel at a site of vandalised pipeline in Ije-Ododo, near Ijegun in Iba Local Council Development Area of Lagos, when an NNPC oil pipeline exploded. A witness said the raging fire started when about 30 oil thieves loaded in two canoes arrived the scene and started scooping fuel into hundreds of 50 kilogramme jerry cans.

Daily Sun learnt that luck ran out on them, when a mysterious fire started and engulfed the environment, including the thieves, their jerry cans and other materials. The fire raged for several hours, as fire fighters stayed away from the scene of the inferno. Some men of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, (NSCDC) and NNPC officials were at the scene to assess the situation.

The NSCDC officer who simply identified himself as Mr. Baiye said: “You can see that the fire is still raging. We can’t go far to examine the damaged pipeline or know the number of people killed because the pipeline is buried under water.” Residents of Ije-Ododo who spoke in separate interviews alleged that the suspected oil thieves who vandalised the pipeline conspired with the police in their nefarious activities. Confirming the incident, the Information Officer, National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, for South West, Ibrahim Farinloye said NEMA was informed about the incident.

He said both state and federal firefighters were at the scene of the inferno but could not do much because it required a technical way to handle. However, residents of the community blamed the authority of the NNPC for the explosion. According to them, such explosion had become an annual ritual. They questioned the motive behind the withdrawal of security men guarding the pipeline facilities in Oke Agemo axis of the area.

According to the traditional ruler of the community, Alhaji Chief Tajudeen Suberu Ododo, the inability of firefighters to put off the fire was because of the inaccessible road to the scene. A resident, who identified himself as Isiaka Bello Ajadi told Daily Sun that: “The fire started around 10:00p.m on Monday night and it was very serious that many people started running away from the scene.” “Since 1996, we have been writing and appealing to NNPC to sandfill that road and links us with Abule Ado but they have refused to answer us. See what has happened now.”

Meanwhile many residents of the community have since Monday night been relocating from the scene of the incident for fear of escalation of the inferno, even as Fire Service men, National Emergency Management Authority (NEMA) and Lagos State Emergency Management Authority (LASEMA) officials are still battling to put out the fire.

Goin through the nairaland front page this afternoon, i saw a topic that says 'access bank gave a staffs 10 packs of sugar each as the xmas gift' https://www.nairaland.com/1136090/access-bank-gives-staff-packets.
Many organisations like access bank also gives their customers and staffs a kind of appreciation in gift.
This topic just attracted a question to my memory which is meant to be directed to the ceo of nairaland, Oluwaseun Osewa when he is going to bring everyone together on this forum before the year runs to an end to dine together at least to compensate for the lost blood glucose from our finger tips during typing, brain cells when thinking of what to type and the destroyed rod and cone cells of our eyes when viewing the screen.

Politics › Re: Should Prisoners Be Allowed To Vote? by Tolexander: 9:27pm On Dec 18, 2012
Nigerian prisoners are just the unlucky and unfortunate masses that ended up being in prison due to the small crime committed when compared to the lucky politicians.
Goverment rules and authority binds on every citizens within the country including the prisoners. Hence i see no reasons why they need not being recognised and considered in a country's voting system.
Our goverment is responsible for the provision of social amenities like pipe borne water, electricity, the inmates' house building and renovation and payment of the prison warder's salary. All these are enough not to disenfranchise the prisoners because they need to participate in things that will affect them.

WebsiteDesigner: and how do we start d reformation?
Thank you!
Let us agree the topic is implemented, are the ond and 2.2,2.1 or 1 degree holding officers going to be placed on the same salary scale as the ssce and 3rd class degree holders? No, it wont be justified. What they are supposed to do is to provide a salary scale with bumper packages that will fit into their qualifications. And besides, it wont be nice using the high certificate holders for some functions as traffic warden.
I believe there should be a functioning psychological department that will be able to inculcate the mentality into the officers during recruitment that their function is to help and make life easy for the masses and not to disturb them. Making them to realize that service to humanity is what should be their watchword without expecting anything in return except their wages.
A kind of service commission in which any misdeed and irregularites done by the officers can be reported to by the people should be made available in every stations and this will create fear in every officer because they know there will always be a punishment for any of their crimes.
And lastly, the police should be under the control of the states. The trend between the IG and the local police is too long, just like telling the FG to have the control of the LG directly. Order from the IG Will take a longer time before it can take effect when we tried to compare it to the time taken from the state commissioner of police to the local police.
Above all our country should be free of corruption before this reformation can be successful!

thelastPope: I am sorry, but I completely disagree with you. If you have ever been to the police station for a case, you will know that the higher ranking officers are more considerate and law abiding than the lower ranking officers who are mostly illiterate! This new. Standard will not solve the whole police problem but it surely will go a long way to reduce it! An educated man will alway be more civil than an uneducated or half educated man!
. I undastand u anyway.
U were talking about the manner of approach of the high ranked officers, does that disallowed them from collecting money for bail from arrested man? does that stop them from collecting bribe? Does that make them from being corrupt?
Mind u! This is nigeria where corruption is not a function of aw educated and civil a man is but something running through almost everyones vein.
Moreover most civilized people has the idea to decieve most due to their high level of literacy.

kulyie: well u are right,i think these dudes need a re-orientation of what their office is about, fine i know its not all about the certificates, but then this guys need to see their office as an opportunity to serve nigerians instead of an opportunity to abuse their office and the powers associated with their uniform, and of course they also need some level of refinement.it is an eyesore when a police officer is controlling traffic wearing bathroom slippers and using uncouth language on commercial drivers as well as private car owners
