NOBEL Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, has emerged the first recipient of the prestigious Obafemi Awolowo Prize for Leadership after days of careful screening of the numerous nominees by both the selection and technical committees for the exercise. Former Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, who is also the chairman, Selection Committee for the award, made the announcement Wednesday at a press conference at the Obafemi Awolowo Foundation office in Gbagada, Lagos, which was attended by traditional rulers and eminent Nigerians, including Sir Olaniwun Ajayi, Prof. Ladipo Adamolekun and Olorogun Felix Ibru. Two traditional rulers, the Olu of Saga Obalayan Ife, Oba Oladejo Oyeyinka 1 and Obawara of Ife, Oba Layi Adereti, represented the Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade. Unveiling the recipient, Anyaoku stated that Soyinka won the award having met, in large measure, the attributes listed for the prize, which he said had characterised the leadership style of the sage, Chief Awolowo. Anyaoku said that Soyinka beat numerous other nominees from across the country. According to him, the criteria included integrity, credibility, discipline, courage, selflessness, accountability, tenacity of purpose, visionary and people-centred leadership as well as respect for the rule of law and press freedom. “It gives me immense pleasure to announce that, after very careful consideration, the selection committee came to the unanimous conclusion that, of all the nominees presented before it, the individual adjudged to possess to the highest degree the attributes for the award, and is, therefore, the first ever recipient of the Obafemi Awolowo Prize for Leadership, is Prof. Wole Soyinka,” Anyaoku said. “Suffice it to say at this point, however, that Prof. Soyinka has, in various ways, demonstrated many of the core values that have been associated with Chief Obafemi Awolowo, and which this prize is meant to encourage and reward.” Anyaoku disclosed that the winner, in his reaction, described the award as “crème de la crème of all the awards that I have received.” The former Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, while speaking on the process through which the winner eventually emerged, said: “This prestigious biennial national prize is structured to follow a rigorous process of nomination and subsequent screening by a selection committee made of the most outstanding Nigerians.” He disclosed that the process also had the involvement of a technical committee consisting mainly of eggheads, among others, stating that a series of meetings were held between the time the nomination closed by August ending and when the winner eventually emerged. Members of the committee included former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Muhammed Lawal Uwais, Prof. Akin Mabogunje, Sir Olaniwun Ajayi, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, Olorogun Felix Ibru, Prof O. O. Akinkugbe, Bishop Emmanuel Gbonigi and Bishop Mathew Hassan Kukah. Others were Prof. Adetokunbo Lucas, Prof. Ladipo Adamolekun, Prof. Anya O. Anya, Mr. Bola Akinkugbe, Prof. (Mrs.) Funmi Soetan and Mr. Niyi Adegbonmire. http://www.ngrguardiannews.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=108200:soyinka-emerges-first-awolowo-leadership-award-recipient&catid=1:national&Itemid=559 |
Billyonaire: Chinua Achebe - Congratulations for telling your personal truth about Biafra. My father told me his own account of losing all businesses and source of livelihood to the needless massacre. Others tell accounts of losing all when Obasanjo led the last battalion that decimated my people in the East. I forgive him, cos it was war, a senseless one. Today, Chinua Achebe has put those moments in an everlasting account in history. Thank you for telling the painful truth once again Achebe. My kids and grand kids and the kids of others worldwide will see the foolishness of betrayal by the Western Awo, the arrogant use of commonwealth to decimate fellow humans by the Northern Gowon and the Selfish pursuit of Egotism in the name of Freedom by the Eastern Ojukwu. But to move on as a nation, we all need to buy the book, read it thoroughly and learn from our collective weaknesses, to continue as one or not, this is a decision we will continue to face until we make.thank u! The only igbo with a sensible comment on this topic. Our leaders had succeeded in creating enmity and retrogression base on there egoism and selfish interest. But that doesn't mean we should now continue to dwell on them. |

ve been here and we have kept these people waiting for one hour and incidentally the Inspector General of Police is not here. “The Senate under the leadership of the Senate President issued a warrant of arrest and directed the IGP to present and compel Maina’s appearance before this committee by 12 O’clock today. “We have been waiting here for more than one hour and we have not seen him. “Today we are not going to waste your time and since we have promised we want to make sure we give him fair hearing. “After due consultation with members of this committee, we have decided to adjourn this sitting indefinitely.” The Co- Chairman of the committee, Senator Kabiru Gaya, also expressed frustration. Gaya said, “I have information from the police that Maina is at the gate addressing his supporters instead of coming here. “We wanted him to be here. So the committee will decide what to do. “One thing is that we have been honest and sincere. We want to put it on record. God knows we have tried. We leave him to God.” http://thenationonlineng.net/new/news-update/pension-we-leave-maina-to-god-senate-panelists/ |

slimghost: You obviously have a low IQ. I can list a number of renowned authors that never won a nobel prize, so making a fool of yourself.but u definitely have no IQ! Of course there are many good and sound writters like achebe but there will be few outstanding writers like soyinka. There are gods and there is a God, out of many people standing, there will be an outstanding man. Many were called and few will be chosen. An example of the above is the situation of u with no IQ and I with low IQ. At least i senior u and i no carry last. |
