Don't turn this tribal, you know if you want to, I will gladly oblige you.

Yes I quite agree that Yorubas have English names but they hardly bare them as first names. Your grandparents will never even reckon with your English name, no matter how sweet it sounds and no matter how sophisticated they are. Infact, they will take it to the next level by calling you by your unique "oroki" name, which is a special name that is peculiar for eulogising you as a person.

Religion and westernisation or arabicanisation should never make us to lose our identity and be proud of heritage. If you like bear Roseleen or Cassandra or Maureen, and be speaking with English with your nose, you will never be seen as a proper English man, as long as you are black.

Likewise, you can recite the quran in Arabic even in your dreams, it will never make Arabs not to see you as their subjects.

Just be proud of identity and rep it to blazes.
i didnt go tribal I made instances and for your information my grand father has an english name cos he was. a catholic

which one is better having a christian name or having a foriegn Surname

I go with the first cos I can't imagine myself having a foriegn surname ....its just too bad

People bearing yusuf ibrahim and peter Lewis

Thats just bad

Igbos maintain their native surname

I'm from Abbi, or Abbi Town as I love to think. (Momsie says we should stop deceiving ourselves. Abbi na village, no be township cheesy grin)

There are several knocks to that Bini theory which I'd rather not elaborate here because I don't want to derail this thread.

Revd Canon Emmanuel Ogeleka Okolugbo's work 'History of the Ndosumili and Ukwuani: People of the Niger-Delta' is part of his 1972 (or is it 76? I forget now) Phd Thesis 'History of Christianity in Ukwuaniland' which, in my opinion is incomplete. As Prof Obaro Ikime (who supervised his Phd thesis) rightly pointed out in the foreward to book, the Rev didn't place the Ukwuani migrations in the wider migratory trends of the people in that area, which might have given us more insight of the cultural exchanges that took place between the Ukwuani and her neighbours.
I GET YOUR DRIFT DEAR, NO TOWN IS FULLY ABORIGINES BUT BUT WE ARE CLASSIFIED BY CULTURED AND LANGUAGE WHICH FROM MY PERSONAL OBSERVATION AND LINGUISTIC OBSERBATION EVEN ADMINISTRATIVELY UKWU ANI WHICH IS AN IGBO WORD IS JUST BASICALLY IGBO, BENIN THEORY TO ME PERSONAL LOOK STUPID, BUT I REPEAT DEAR ITS MY PERSONAL OBSERVATION.

HAVE YOU EVER ASKED WHEN THE MIGRANTS CAME TO UKWUANI DID THEY MEET AN EMPTY PLACE, IF YES, WHY THEN DID THEIR LANGUAGE CHANGE FROM BENIN TO IGBO LANGAUGE

ANOTHER ONE IS THAT IF THE EDO REFUGEES OR MIGRANT DID NOT MEET AN EMPTY PLACE, IT THEN MEAN THAT THERE ARE ORIGINAL OWNERS OF THE LAND THAT ASSIMILATED THEM AND THESE ORIGINAL OWNERS ARE IGBO ..THESE CAUSED THE MIGRANT TO SPEAK ENGLISH. JUST LIKE MIGRATING TO SOMEWHERE IN EKITI AT A TIME YOU WILL BE SPEAKING YORUBA BECAUSE HIGHER POPULATION OF PEOPLE SPEAKS YORUBA..THIS IS EXACTLY THE CASE OF UKWUANI

AND YOUR NAME IS ISHILOVE IF I AM RIGHT...IS ISHI NOT IGBO WORD FOR HEAD ?

Why do Igbo people like bearing English name, especially the ladies?

It baffles me atimes. Most times, I usually ask for the African name.
becuause the are christains and predominantly orthodox christian and infant baptism requires you taking up a name after a patron saint or good biblical character but every igbo has pure igbo names and igbos rare bear foriegn names as surnames....I hope you are claered. Next time do a proper research before you come and make jest of urself

now its like asking why do hausa people and Nigerian muslim even yorubas bear Arabic names.... Names like Azeez, Yusuf are pure Arabic names

now yoruba still bear english names like Gbenga Daniel, Bankole Wellignton, Tiwa Savage, Peter Ojo etc

I totally get your analysis on the importance of the symbolic effect. However, caution should be taken when the Money used as a title to enhance the symbolic effect is untrue. The title of the thread is "Apple Inc. Buys Chinedu Echeruo’s Hopstop.com For $1 Billion". The title is misleading and untrue. Apple did buy Chinedu's Hopstop but Apple did not pay $1Billion Dollars.

Philip Emeagwali

Mathematician / Computer Scientist

Born: 23 August 1954
Birthplace: Akure, Nigeria
Best known as: Nigerian-born supercomputing pioneer
Philip Emeagwali won the Gordon Bell supercomputing prize in 1989 for applying the power of networked computers to analysis of oil field reserves. The child of a poor Nigerian family, Emeagwali was largely self-taught in the sciences until 1974, when he won a scholarship to Oregon State University. During the 1970s and '80s he furthered his education at George Washington University and the University of Maryland, studying mathematics and environmental engineering. In the 1980s he worked on advanced formulas in networked computers, leading to the Gordon Bell prize. Emeagwali has won several other awards, including a 1998 Distinguished Scientist Award from the World Bank.

We have made contributions in a host of fields of medicine and technology that have advanced mankind."

A father of the Internet

Philip Emeagwali, a computer scientist, is but one example. He uses his mathematical and computer expertise to develop methods for extracting more petroleum from oil fields.

It was his formula that used 65,000 separate computer processors to perform 3.1 billion calculations per second in 1989. That feat led to computer scientists comprehending the capabilities of supercomputers and the practical applications of creating a system that allowed multiple computers to communicate. He is recognized as one of the fathers of the Internet.

there are things that we have to understand, igbo will not die cos we have about 40 million native speakers and not the assimilated speakers, what you should understand is that igbo is evolving, I for an example was born in owerri from anambra and my igbo is mixed up now i married a delta igbo(ukwuani axis) woman and her igbo is more like oguta and we have a daughter ..we live in a non igbo speaking area...so the problem to me are our ladies

Wify speaks english with ukwuani igbo , me i speak central igbo with some anambra..at the end of the day my baby get it all mixed up..mixing anambra with delta igbo..but we have an understnading

I will toe the steps that my friends took and their parents took..I will send her to a good school in east when she is in JS3 so that igbo culture will be ingrained in her...like seriously she is so awarte

another thing is that after the war, igbo conciousness was at the lowest ebb but now there is high igbo identity due to the remarkable progress we have made in all factes of life and if you take a look today igbo music with igbo words are the reigning by non igbo musicians like omawumi, waje, timaya etc they are incorporating igbo words in igbo music. Now movies help to project our language to the world, that is why today if you go to kenya you can here a massai saying igwe to every nigerian he sees

DONT WORRY IGBO LANGUAGE WILL NOT DIE

Pls do get my analysis....IT IS NOT THE MONEY BUT THE SYMBOLICAL EFFECT

DanjaNinja:

My brother i empathize with you. It is important we celebrate hard working successful Nigerians. That i completely agree with. However, we should be mindful of the mixing truth with false information. This is bad for business for it portrays Nigerians as desperadoes telling lies for technological relevance. Yes, Apple bought Hopstop but there is not a single report of the actual price anywhere online. Which is quite disturbing since every major tech acquisition lists purchase price. Is it Instagram? - $800M (acquired by Facebook). Whatsapp - $22Billion (acquired by Facebook again!). Waze - $1Billion(acquired by Google) and lastly, Beats, acquired by apple for $3Billion. But Hopstop? Not a single information with regards to price and yet its the biggest headline on Nigerian blogs states "Apple purchases Hopstop for $1 Billion".

This perverse style of journalism is what also resulted in Dbanj's false Beat By Dre's endorsement. There was no such endorsement by Beats by Dre. I kid you not. You dont believe me? Head over to beat by Dre's website and try to find Dbanj's so called product. Brotherly, You will find no such thing. What Dbanj had was a single custom made beats by dre head phone. Yet, the Nigerian blogsphere, desperate for national significance and relevance, helped Dbanj perpertrate the endorsement lie.

I know the excessive optimists amongst you would say "but is it your business". To that i say Yes - Truth is my business. It should also be your business. A little white lie might not hurt but continue on that path and pretty soon you'll be telling big fat ugly lies.

In summary, celebrate the good, emulate the good but don't spoil the good by telling white lies. We all owe ourselves the truth. Thats all.

NewsINigeria:

A 67-year-old pensioner, Asimiyu Olayinka, has pleaded with the Alakuko Customary Court in Lagos yesterday to dissolve his 26-year-old marriage to his wife Fatimo, who he accused of adultery.

The last time I slept with my wife was the last time my manhood functioned. On that day, my wife gave me a special treatment when I returned from work which led us to our bedroom. Surprisingly, during lovemaking, I had a terrible attack. I fell from the bed and excreted on my body. I thought I was going to die because it was like magun (charm) was placed on me. As I speak, it’s been three years since I slept with any woman. I am impotent.”

He said: “I married her solely because my second wife was troublesome. I wasn’t even bothered she had two sons from her previous marriages because when I met her, she was the best woman in the world. She took care of the seven children I had from my previous marriages. The problem started when I retired in 2005. She stopped listening to me likewise our children. Our first daughter dropped out of secondary school because I asked her to repeat a class and her mother was not in support.

“My wife is fond of entertaining men at the frontage of our house which I am strongly against. At my age, I still fetch water and wash my clothes. I never believed she could engage in extra marital sex until I saw her walk out from a hotel with a co-landlord in our neighbourhood. She was shocked to see me but I greeted her. It’s been one year since I stopped asking about her movement. It is painful I can’t do anything as a man. I don’t even know the reason she left her previous marriages. There cann’t be peace in our home except we part ways.”

Mrs Olayinka, a 54-year-old food vendor, described her husband as violent.

She said: “Since we got married, I have never achieved anything. He never bought me a wrapper but he complains each time I am in a new outfit. I am surprised he said he is impotent because the last time we slept with each other was February 2014. The night he fell from the bed and defecated, he was drunk. I washed his faeces in the midnight. He didn’t see me in a hotel with another man. I really don’t know why he is saying all this.

“I was even ashamed when he said he caught me in a hotel with another man in the presence of our children. My husband is violent. Whenever he is ready to sleep with me, he beats me with a towel. He is the landlord of the house we live but he doesn’t cater for our children’s upkeep. There was a time he disconnected the light of the room I sleep for a year. It was until my first son invited four elderly men to plead with him that he reconnected it. He gives me N600 to prepare soup for myself and the 10 children. We still had issues before we came to court. I will say he was smart enough to bring our case to court because I am also fed up. I just want N200, 000 compensation from him and I want him to take responsibilities of our last daughter’s education.”

Their first son, Abdul’razaq, who was in court said: “My father is always drunk. This issue has been on for over 10 years. There was a time my father told me my mother was committing adultery; I had to monitor her movement for two days but there was no evidence. There is unity among the children but our parents keep fighting. I will be glad if the court reconciles them because this is the time our father needs care.”

The marriage produced three children.

The court’s president, Chief Awos Awosola, gave Olayinka two days to re-consider a divorce. He ordered him to rent an apartment for his wife and to give her N350, 000 as compensation. The case continues tomorrow.

PoliticsHow We Roll And Ball In Lagos Apc...this Is Just Terrible by tonychristopher(op): 1:39pm On Mar 04, 2015
The bill proposes to grant the two officials, who are members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), pensions that amount to 100 percent of their annual basic salary for life, after their tenure as leaders in the state assembly expires.

The bill also proposes such additional benefits as a free house anywhere in Lagos State and a free vehicle paid for from state funds.

In a move that two APC insiders criticized for being corrupt and selfish, the two legislative officials are also meant to receive unlimited allowance for furnishing their free homes, security personnel for life, and free medical treatment for the officials and their families for life. Other obscene benefits include additional allowances for housing maintenance, vehicle maintenance, and entertainment—each category calculated at 10 percent of the officials’ base salary. The officials’ utility allowance is at 20 percent of their base salary.

In addition, the bill stipulates that the state governor and deputy governor as well as their families would receive free medical treatment for life. All designated members of the state leadership would have pensionable drivers for life as well.

The scandalous bill is cited as “the Public Office Holder (Payment of Pension) Law 2007 (Amendment) Law 2015.”

“This bill is a slap on the faces of the hapless residents of Lagos State who pay through their noses for amenities that are mostly inadequate or absent,” said a critic of the bill, an APC member. He added, “This is a senseless war by some decadent APC leaders against the public interest.”

A member of the state assembly, who said he found the bill shocking, said the proposed bill was introduced at a time Nigeria’s public attention was focused squarely on national elections, the counterinsurgency against Boko Haram in the north, and the APC presidential candidate, Muhammadu Buhari’s visit to London.

Please note the use of "Hopstop has often been compared to Israel's Waze which was recently acquired by Google for $1 Billion". It was Waze and not Hopstop that was acquired for a billion dollars. I have confirmed this by checking hopstop's website as well as Hopstop's wikipedia page. There was no mention of the exact amount apple paid to acquire hopstop. Please take note.
