Bjrokenhear003:
Normally when a company buys back its shares

for example as dangote cement lets say the shares outstanding is 17,000 as at now
so as dangote agrees to buy back 10% of its shares
the shares outstanding is now 17,000*0.9 = 15,300

using previous profit as at last year of 200bn
eps last yr = 200bn /17000 = 11.76
market price at this date stood as 165
pe ratio = 165/11.76 = 14x

and if profit goes up by 5% as estimated from its q1 earnings
200bn *1.05 = 210bn
eps = 210bn/15,300 = 13.7

market price automatically goes up as former pe ratio * eps as 14 *13.7 = 191.8
and if profit still remains the same the eps goes high, same will market price

thats why i am so confused at the moment except its the dividend thats removed from its market price followed by the massive layoffs and bua cement tussle war or else i swear im confused as mad
This explains how it benefits dangcem, how does it benefit the investors abeg

Yes. Wait for dangcem to fall. They will still crash the price to buy it back at lowest possible price. Then move the bus thereafter.
I don't think there's anything wrong with its fundamentals, Alhaji and his guys just needed to pick it at cheapest price on the floor ni.
The first year low was 116 around march.....let's see how they'll do it this time around. How low it will go.
I can see 115.20 on the table......think it will be good to start picking small small from the year low.......
This is just my opinion. smiley
Ok thanks alot

Sir Onegentleguy pls help out here.
I don't know much about dangcem buyback.

.....but share buyback is beneficial once completed/concluded.
The share price will go up thereafter.....but will still fall before then, like dangcem is currently fallen cos the aim is to pick at lower price as possible on the floor.
Thanks mercy.

I am keeping some cash hoping to buy stocks at the beginning of bull. I am thinking of picking gtb and access (i already bought zenith and uba at march low price) but the low price dangcem is attractive but need to understand what buyback means .

I will wait for honourable onegentleguy.

I need your advice

I am on 30 percent profit on uba shares. Am contemplating selling to buy dangote cement. Investment purpose is for long term

Is it a wise decision?
InvestmentRe: Us Stocks Pick Alert by Topson88: 8:57am On Jun 22, 2020
Thesilentone, I think 4play's advice is for newbies or anyone who has little knowledge in stocks to prevent stories that touch the heart.

Its all about one of the general principles of investing ..." low risk low return, high risk high return"

As for me, nothing stops me from investing in individual stocks as well as index stocks....its all about diversifying one's portfolio with respect to one's risk appetite.

The reality is market crash always occur(but crash is not something to be dreaded but infact opportunities) at least every 10-15 years from the last crash sometimes there are exceptions, but they will still occur, no one knows when. That is why trying to time the market is a just a Loser game. Since you are going for a long term which is the wisest thing to do, I will advice you to invest in index fund, this is save and a form of passive investment, you do not need to actively monitor your portfolio and please do not invest all your money at once, though you can but I will advise not. Invest little by little from time to time. Leave the rest to the power of compounding.
Thanks Narit, I appreciate.
Actually most of my fund is in Vanguard lifestrategy 100 percent equity global index, I just took out a little to invest in US individual stocks .
Thanks for the advise.

koonbey:
Halving your funds might be better because if a drop happens, you'd be half as stressed as if all your money was in the market, plus you could then use the remaining half to buy the dip and get a better average for your purchases before selling when the markets go up.

The stocks you mentioned are solid ones that will likely be more resistant than most other stocks in the event of a crash, and they are also likely to come back up faster than most other stocks, so in short, they are good if you want to enter the market securely.

Either way, be cautious and make sure you understand what you're risking. A crash can happen and leave the market bearish for a long, long time (the 2008 crisis left a bear market that lasted 17 months, for instance).

In short, things are very volatile now and nothing is assured.
Thanks alot koonbey, I plan to leave the fund invested for 5 to 10years.
I appreciate.

Honestly speaking, people are always entice by the romance of the market quote, creating an illusion that they can make quick money by taking advantage on the short term volatility of the market. With my experience from the stock market, I can bodly tell you the more you trade the less you make. The only way you can make money from the market is with the help of a "LONG TERM PATIENCE" please invest for the Long term. Have been with this thread for a while and I am very glad people, mostly the young ones on this forum are getting expose to investing in the U.S stock market. But please don't be seduce by market distraction, it does not end well.

If you just can't stay away from market seduction, just try and only use 10% of your money for speculation at most 20% and use the remaining 90% for long term investing. In the long run you will see which one of the two accounts have made you financially secure. I am willing to stake my both hands on the long term account. Speculating is scam.
Please if am planning to invest for long term, do I need to be bordered about the second stock market crash rumour or is it wise I use half of my fund to buy stocks now then wait till the end of the year to buy stocks with the other half of my fund.
I intend to invest in Facebook, Apple, Amazon Microsoft and Google

Spending time in the market seems better than timing the market.

I will appreciate several advices

For example, if a newbie wants to invest in NSE without much knowledge in it, he or she will be advised to put his or her money on any of or combination of FUGAZ stocks with a good entry price.

Question: please what are the examples of FUGAZ like stocks in the us stock market which i can do due diligence on and then invest for LONG TERM (like 5 to 10years)

I will appreciate responses and appology to those my question will irritate.

Why the stock market?

I work and live in the UK, before now my plan was to convert all extra pounds to naira which is to be invested in my MMF account monthly and using 20 percent of what i have in my mmf account to increase my holdings in zenith and uba shares during September/ October bear periods in NSE market ( stock investment plan is for long term except if i acheive 150 percent gain then i can sell off to buy again when stocks fall )

Q1. With naira struggling at the moment do you think i should continue with my plan or hold on to forex till tbills and mmf rate increase?

Q2. Do you as a long term stock investor sell at all irrespective of how much percent gain you get as long as fundamentals remain solid and if you sell, is my 150 percent exit target ok or you think 200 percent is not bad.

Q3. Please how do you deal with omo onile problem when buying lands. I have heard nasty experiences from friends and family members.

N.B please pardon my ignorance, the enlightenment in business and finance management i have is being acquired here and on NSEMPA nairaland thread. Thanks

Boss, how are we sure the number is even up to 300 and the numbers under watch up to what they're telling us?
Nigerian government will do anything to partake out of the grants and donations circulating around for their selfish gains, and the plan actually worked.
Some Nigerians too can resort to 'arrangee' just to get attention or get into isolation for two weeks, at least they'll be govt's "guests" for those two weeks. grin
Heard of a man whose dad died of rheumatism but begged the doctor in charge to change it to Covid19, by doing this, he and his family would be immediately 'packed up' and moved to isolation centre, at least, two weeks free feeding will be guaranteed for the family. grin
Not saying there are no cases oooo, just trying to look at it from the point of view of corrupt leaders we have and the hunger in the land.
Many households are suffering of hunger due to this lockdown and I agreed with Yoms that people might revolt if this lockdown continues.
I think there are more covid cases in Nigeria than reported owing to following reasons...

1. Patients with covid 19 are being treated as malaria in chemist shops, health centres, hospitals with coatem and some may add antibiotics for cough, some dey where dem dey drink herbs....fortunately they get better after about 7 days and they will never know they had corona virus. How NCDC wan count those ones?? undecided grin

2. Stigmatization following isolation may deter some people.

3. We have loose land borders where people walk in without adequate testing.

4. I heard that the swab test is about 70 percent sensitive even when samples are well taken. What happen to the other false negatives?

Well, we are lucky in Nigeria because the statistics of elderly people and people with non communicable diseases like heart diseases, COPD, cancers etc which makes the symptoms of covid severe are less compared to developed countries.

At this crucial and delicate investment cycle and always; you will do yourself much good and saved yourself of great financial loss by:
1. Not investing just by hearsay or with others opinion alone without your due diligence
2. Making sure you don’t lack understanding of the investment product you want to venture into
3. Not relying only on past performance of a particular investment window – past performance is no guarantee of future results
4. Don’t follow the crowd. Investment is not by popular opinion, it’s based on facts, figures and economic realities
5. Be realistic
6. Take calculated risk to avoid casualties
7. Beware of get rich quick syndrome – investment is not a destination it’s a journey
8. Think of the safety of your funds first before interest, gains or returns.
9. Get a mentor
10. Have your own strategy base on your investment objectives and follow it religiously until you have a better option.
.

Please I want to withdraw some of the money I put in stanbic mmf two weeks ago to buy zenith shares.
1. Will I lose some of my capital since it's not yet a month

2. How many percent is the penalty
