Some suspects arrested with bags of Indian hemp. By Nigeria’s justice style, they will probably face ‘firing squad’! When the world is softening towards marijuana or cannabis and its users and Canada is leading national efforts to legalise it, Nigeria is still implementing a draconian law, probably left behind by the former colonial masters. A Federal high court sitting in Lagos south west Nigeria, today sentenced a thirty – two year old man Aluagwu Lawrence to life imprisonment for unlawfully dealing in 220 grammes of Cannabis Sativa, otherwise known as Marijuana, while another person, Ameachi Igwe 37 years old, was sentenced to twenty -five years imprisonment by the same court for dealing in 2.7 grammes of Cocaine. (Please note, the two Nigerians have been given lengthy jail terms for grammes not kilogrammes of cannabis) In a one count criminal charge number FHC/L/108/15 filed before the court by the NDLEA prosecutor, Jeremiah Aernan, it was alleged that Aluagwu Lawrence,32 years old on the 12th of February,2015 under the bridge Ojota Lagos without lawful authority dealt in 220 grammes of Cannabis Sativa, a narcotic similar to cocaine, Heroin LSD etc and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under sections 11(c) of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act, Cap N30 laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004. He was arraigned before the court on the 16th of June,2015. He pleaded guilty, without a lawyer, rendering him any advice or representing him. Consequently, the prosecutor, Mr Aernan reviewed the facts of the case as stated in the charge. When the presiding judge asked him if he has anything to say, he told the court that his father was an Indian hemp smoker who persistently beat his mother before they were sent away from home. He did not go to school, he said. He further told the court that he was initially training as an athlete at the National stadium when a soldier promised to help him travel abroad but the soldier deceived him and dupe him of his money. Thereafter he has nothing doing,he then started selling Indian Hemp. In her judgement,Justice Ofili Ajumogobia sentenced him to life imprisonment. In the criminal charge number FHC/L/202C/15 filed against the second convict Ameachi Igwe ,37, he was said to have on the 8th of May,2015 at Mile 12 Market Lagos without lawful authority dealt in 2.7grammes of Cocaine, thereby committing an offence contrary to section 11(c) of the NDLEA Act He pleaded guilty. He was not also represented by any counsel. The fact of the case was also reviewed after which Justice Ajumogobia asked him whether he has anything to say. The convict urged the judge to temper justice with mercy. Thereafter the convict was sentenced to twenty -five years imprisonment with hard labour. http://thenewsnigeria.com.ng/2015/12/nigerian-32-bags-life-jail-for-cannabis-another-25-years/

Her Majesty the Queen of England, Elizabeth Alexandra; President Muhammadu Buhari; Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo (SAN); and governors from at least 20 states, ministers and other dignitaries are expected to attend the coronation of the new Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi Ojaja II. The Chairman, Media Committee of the coronation, Mr. Biyi Odunlade, said this at a press conference that started a series of activities lined up for the coronation scheduled to hold on December 7. Odunlade, however, explained that the queen might be represented at the ceremony. He added that guests from many nations of the world had been invited for the ceremony. The Ooni also said he was ready to fast-track the development of Ife with a series of policies, which he said, would make the Yoruba people proud anywhere they found themselves. only in yoruba land you will see things like this happening The monarch, who was represented at the press conference by his elder brother, Prince Adegboyega Ogunwusi, said he would do everything possible to address the problem of youth unemployment in the town. Ogunwusi, who donated 50 transformers to some communities in Ife before he emerged as the new Ooni, said he would donate additional 50 transformers within the next 30 days to boost electricity supply in the ancient town. He noted that this gesture would make small scale businesses in the town to thrive because power problem would have been reduced. He said, “Let me acquaint you with what I have done in less than 70 days. I have given out over 20 electricity transformers worth about N250m. “I donated 50 transformers when I was a prince. I will buy another 50 transformers within the next 30 days to further enhance electricity distribution. With this, small scale businesses of welders, tailors and others will naturally witness improvement. “Providentially, I know the core investor and the Chairman, Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, Mr. Tunde Ayeni, personally and very well. I have engaged him and his team to make this a reality and work has commenced in earnest. We will witness this transformation by the very special grace of God.” “To revamp the stadium, I have already opened discussion with the Osun State Government on this. I will set up a football academy and we will have 16 clubs in Ife.” The new monarch also promised to establish a football academy. While the press conference was going on, the new Ooni and other guests were at an inter-religious service held at Enuwa Square. One of the religious leaders, who spoke at the service, Apostle Joshua Fagbule, urged the people of Ife to rally round Ogunwusi in order for him to bring about meaningful development to the town. http://punchng.com/queen-elizabeth-buhari-20-govs-to-attend-oonis-coronation/ only in yoruba land
