VOTE YOUR CHOICE There is no modicum of doubt that February 16th, 2019 has become the popular date that every individual is talking about. And the truth of the day is that everyone has interest; the basis in which the interest is soiled and the personal conviction is what differentiate us. The fact that your interest is different from mine shouldn't make us enemies. It is just our personal conviction that is different; hence there is no meaning reason for attacking anybody verbally or physically because he/she chooses to follow a different path. Since, we are in an egalitarian and democratic society our point of view cannot always align. Vote for your choice, follow your conscience not for the money or personal gain but on the basis to remove future pain. Similarly, you need to know that your voice is 50-50 (it is either on the side of majority or minority), hence it is not a do or die affair. Your may be willing to gain people to your side as a good disciple; obviously not a bad idea, you only need to give your convincing points not attack. We are friends, families and one. Election shouldn't make us enemies. Let's vote not fight. #Vote not #fight God bless Nigeria. Signed: Iyiola Oluwatosin Damilare. |
I saw Ewa Crying for Iwa Ranting lowolowo no penny in my account, And why will she shout hallelujah in count, What is the reason For the season? I saw the Adekunle Telling Adewale That he is not a pegan The moment the killing of the chicken began. Must I kill my chicken And keep frying in the kitchen, When sons of Jezebel won't stop ranting in the yard, To make some sleep in the ward. How do I tell them? The celebrant is a dove, Who give everyone love, He took his own heart To take our dearth He received the nail So that we can be hailed. They crowned him with thorn, Cut him in ton, They traded him for a price When he is worth more than any price. Kill him, Bury him They screamed Son of David In avid. That memory we linked to his birth, The son of the virgin The son of love Who healed many times in love. All he has done happened in love And end in love... Today I will remember Him in December Not with meat Nor the chicken But with my love For those he loved... Merry Christmas brethren!!! (C) Tosdam 2018. 25th December is a time to remember. Suggest a title for this fellow poet... Thanks.. |

PEN ROBBERY: A SOCIETAL EVIL There is no doubt that pen robbery is one of the greatest societal evils which has not only eaten deep into every sector in Nigeria but has also become official and legal. From a critical view, pen robbery is worse than armed robbery. Pen robbery, an illegal way of stealing and embezzling money without the use of arms, is a catalyst which has spread across offices, institutions, and political fora. It has become a celebrated aspiration in public offices, ministries, local governments, banks, hospitals, courts and government parastatal. Pen robbery is quite unnoticed and silent despite its cancerous syndrome which creeps any society down in a short period of time and makes a large number of citizens poor. It is a cancer that has eaten deep into the fabric of our national life. It is a disease that has sent many citizens to early grave. Admittedly, pen robbers are the worst enemies of any society and most Nigerian politicians if not all are pen robbers. Painfully, pen robbery has become part of our normal life and there is no aspect of our social, political or even religious life free of the syringe of corruption. Pen robbery is an epitome of high-handedness, lawlessness and a pure evidence of corruption at its peak in any country. And there is no gainsaying the fact that political pen robbers have dominated the political circumference of Nigeria. Pen robbers include state governors who use their offices to embezzle public funds; they also use their officials to inflate the cost of contract for their approval; they divert funds meant for capital project for personal gain. Pen robbers also include those who use internet to dupe, steal and defraud people of their hard-earned money. And this cancer is prevalent among youths across the world. Obviously, many armed robbers have once worked as political thugs for some political pen robbers who embezzle funds 'anointed' to cater for the masses. Similarly, unemployment; which is the reason some young folks end into thuggery, money rituals, is a baton passed on to many generations from pen robbers. The most painful part is that pen robbery has crept into churches and mosques. Pastors and Imams who are expected to be the shining example of Godly life are the set of individuals using anointed oils and holy water to get money and sex from innocent Nigerians. What about intellectual criminals? These are lecturers and professors who exchange grades for sex and money, principal officers of universities who siphon allocation alloted to their institutions and students union leaders who use letter head for personal gains. Pen robbery in banks has clearly become official. Illegal deduction of fifty naira, fifty kobo from millions account users and wiring of millions of naira from one account to another by bank managers. Frankly, pen robbery will continue to increase because of the people's love for mundane things and exotic life. In fact, it is obvious that only few Nigerians are corruption free in official functions. And it will be very difficult to find that few. By: Iyiola Oluwatosin Damilare...

TEACHING PROFESSION NEEDS TO BE REBRANDED Without a jaundiced view, it is a yardstick that education is the mother of all disciplines. Apparently, the development of a country, youth and every individual at large vehemently depends on teachers who have the ability to make or mar learners. However, it is pathetic that stigmatization is the reward of a teacher, especially at the secondary and primary level. Hence, this piece is coming at the right time when the truth is needed to be told that the feasibility of education as life cannot be underestimated or retracted in Nigeria and the world at large. Although, education can be referred to as unfinished business because no man can be perfect in the field of teaching, yet it is a true profession which every being must glorify or endeavour to pay homage to at all time. It is only a blind or a deaf man that will attest that an educator is not a creator, builder and formulator who serves as the spinal cord or wheel chair of a country. But, reverse is the case in a country and century which has been corroborated to be the growing seed of corruption. For crying out loud, it is a namby-pamby and a clear cut wishy-washy that a local government chairman is chaired and ex gratia with nobility even before a teacher. Frankly, that is just an epitome of foolishness preceding wisdom. Even the society seems to be made up of millions ungrateful beings who often argue that the *“reward of a teacher is in heaven”* and they are not necessary to be a noble man or woman. Still, they trust their lives and the lives of their children in the hands of a teacher. There goes a popular cliché *“to whom much is given, much is definitely expected”.* If a driver could be seen as a demi-god whenever he drives people from one junction to another. What more can we say to a teacher who drives people from generation to generation for a great number of years? Underrating the ability or effort of a teacher is a criminal act to degrade the teaching profession. The re-definition of educational structure is essential and mandatory at this 21st century in Nigeria. Teaching profession needs a new dimension of packaging and branding to make it attractive and reputable in the society. Teaching profession needs to sail through the tunnel of shame to the topmost climax of honour as other professions have done. Some people see educational course as the last option while in the real sense it ought to be the first option; hence, teaching profession needs packaging which will make it sellable and attractive even to the unattractive minds. It is obvious that people take teaching job as a result of unemployment which has sprung up in geometric ratio. Teaching profession has become a stepping stone to other professions with the popular cliché *“half bread is better than no bread”.* Education as a profession has now become a dumping ground for other professions when in the real sense those who have golden passion for teaching were derailed by the negative trait of the profession. We cannot continue to trust the lives of our youth in the hands of semi-baked teachers or forced educationists who have less or no passion for imparting knowledge. According to the Nigeria National Policy on Education(1991) teacher education should be given a major emphasize in educational planning because no educational system can raise above the quality of it teachers. It is thus the key factor in the entire educational programme for the teacher may make or mar the educational programme. The services of the teacher, more any than another profession, influence the lives of the nation’s youth and future. It is highly laughable that education sector in Nigeria is underfunded against the 25% budget ordered by United Nation Educational Science and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to be allocated for education. To every genuine government, education should be the topmost priority. But, it is a gargantuan chagrin that teachers wallow in poverty as the classrooms remain unnoticed. Finally, to fill the vacuum which has been made by the Federal Government and the entire citizens of Nigeria in recent time, teachers’ integrity must be honoured and glorified. Teaching job should be given full autonomy like other professional courses such as medicine, law etc. Their take home or remuneration should be able to take them home or be equivalent to other professions. ALÁGEMO The colourful lizard, That silently creep in my father's yard, No noise here, no noise there, Its movement is not a pendulum swing, But its colour is confusion there and here, Like a bat with claw and wing. Alágemo The facade of change, Dawdling towards the chain, Unlike the frog hopping in the mud, Or the vagabond Cain. Who care for Abel's age? Maybe, those whom fast money had driven wud. Alágemo Four years A4 paper earner, With his akubay knocking the floor, Too gentle to reject the office's offer, Man go chop is the vibrate tone, No sleep at night, he must use Solotone. Alágemo Not a taxi driver, a Corolla driver, Next bustop is half a century money, Man must chop and pray in flat, No violence with the man in black, The grease must not ‘rob' the palm. Alágemo The head has defiled the rule, Who will talk? Not even Solomon, The black head with white brain. Alágemo Imam has raped the soul of the mosque, Hallelujah in satanic church, Nobody must hop like frog, Cos the gods are silent in our case. (c) Iyiola Oluwatosin .D (28th May, 2018)
