Yes, they speak Yoruba, but call themselves Ijaw and trace their history to Apoi village in Bayelsa. There are other Ijaw that live on land, but it is uncommon outside Bayelsa and Delta states, thats why the Apoi stand out.
the apoi and arogbo arent unknown in their state of origin, to the best of my knowledge.

not sure how living on land makes them stand out, though maybe it would be considered unusual in the areas you mention.

in yorubaland they're known as ijo ori omi [ijaw living on water] and ijo ori ile [ijaw living on land].

the ones living on land trade with the yorubas i believe.

they also interact more with yorubas while the ones on water maintain ties with their kinsmen further east ie southsouth.

some of the yorubas on that side also live on water.

^^apoi are mixed, or yoruba speaking ijaw.

let's not make this complicated.

western ijaws are categorized in two different ways- the yoruba speaking [tend to live on land] and the pure ijaws, or non-yoruba speaking, who live on water.
Politics › Re: Ijaw Do Not Own Land In Edo State, Ondo State Or Warri Or Farcados by tpia5: 12:10am On Sep 28, 2011
as far as i know, the pure ijaws in ondo live on water.

the apois are the ones living on land i think.

living on water would imply you also own the land covered by the water? huh someone correct me if i'm wrong.

not sure what all this is about anyway. Maybe things have changed.

any links to the tom briggs stuff everyone is going on about?

nigeria is in a permanent state of war.

everybody is the enemy of everybody else.

in between, nigerians cooperate and are thicker than glue when they unite to do juju or any other anti-social activity though.

[quote author=alj_harem link=topic=760170.msg9232991#msg9232991 date=1317159440]Not really, if Awori means Awomiri in ijaw (water loving people)

and Ijaws have kanuru which mean hot drink then they can argue that Kanuri is a corrupt form of kanuru but just adding A and U

it become Akanuru ( hot water/drink people)

it is very easy to claim and lie about history.

just find words that suit your agenda and force it down on people but using propangada

Edo call lagos Eko

Yoruba call it Oko/eko

Ijaws call it Ukomure or so

as u can see, the ijaws are trying to lie about their own version of lagos. What the hell is Ukomure huh Just say they can call it a corrupt version as well.[/quote]but we all know kanuris are from sudan and yemen.

i havent read about this ijaw/lagos/tom briggs issue yet [dont know who he is], but isnt every tribe trying to claim lagos anyway.

Yes, I know. I also know that if there is a 3-way split (I want a 2-way though). The Edos are most likely going to join Odua and operate federalism where they control their stuffs. I just can't see them, Itsekiris and maybe (emphasis on "maybe"wink Uhrobos, joining the Ijaw dominated ND republic. I just can't. Its a personal opinion though . Moreover, the WEST achieved more when together, than the West and Mid west. It was this era the WEST had Free education, first tv station in Africa etc
if ijaws and binis sort out their differences, the rest of edo will follow suit and stay behind benin either overtly or covertly.

so, whoever gets the upper hand now will determine where everyone goes.

personally, i'd say edo ties to the north are just as strong as any ties people think they have with the west.

but that's just me.

Yes. we are lake like people just like the Ijaws. We live near water body ie lake Chad thus it is likely that we are linked with the Ijaws one way or the other undecided .

kan -nuru meaning Hot drink in ijaw or sometimes spelt as kanuru which also means Hot drink in kalabari

so given that lake chad is hot and in the north + the water area

likely kanuris originated from ijaws which were called kanuru a corrupt form of kanuri (Hot drink)[/quote]that's rather far fetched.

i have my reasons for asking the question.

Btw, I am talking about the Old west not SW. Are Edos in the SW? No.
I know you are an Edo man BUT the truth is you can hardly separate Edos/iod and Yorubas/boid.
i hope you know why the midwest was separated from the western region.

[quote author=Negro_Ntns link=topic=760170.msg9232869#msg9232869 date=1317157751]tpia, please knock it off! The Yoruba commonwealth or nation does not have "Ijaw" as a sub-tribe. There is intermarriage between Yoruba and Igbo, Yoruba and Hausa. . . . . should we start saying Yorubas are Hausas or are Igbos?

We have Ilajes - riverine peoples - but we do not have Ijaws.[/quote]you misunderstand me.

i'm not saying ijaws are yoruba.

my point is ijaws are linked to every major tribe in nigeria by blood- through intermarriage or whichever way entire areas of ijoid communities came into being.

there are ijaw/yoruba regions [they are not yoruba but ijaw], ijaw/igbo regions [overly ijaw but with strong igbo links and sometimes becoming igbo on occasion], likewise you can find ijoids in the north and middle belt same way there are hausa people of non-hausa ancestry there.

ijaw/edo have extremely ambiguous relations with each other and yes, they are brothers.

Politics › Re: Ijaws Attack Binis Over Ownership Of Gelegele Land In Edo State by tpia5: 10:05pm On Sep 27, 2011
the only thing Ijaw is mixed with is Portuegese blood, take Yoruba out of that equation
apoi ijaw are mixed with yoruba.

as you travel along the coast, there are many other ijoid communities where the ijaw mixed with their host area. I'm not referring to the core ijaw regions, and even then, it still applies somewhat.

many threads where the host areas are disputing the level of ijawness compared to the level of the host tribe.

the reason for this type of thing imo is because ijaw men date and marry quite literally from anywhere.
Islam › Re: Is Applying Of Relaxer A Sin In Islam? by tpia5: 9:54pm On Sep 27, 2011
conservative muslim ladies [at least in nigeria] dont perm their hair, as far as i know.

i dont think perming or not perming is meant to indicate spirituality per se, but it might be difficult to have natural hair if you're overseas.

for oyibos/arabs/non-blacks, its easier for them since all they have to do is use a hair clip but for the rest of us, our hair needs more attention.

braids should be ok though.

either that or you still cover the hair after perming.
Politics › Re: Ijaws Attack Binis Over Ownership Of Gelegele Land In Edo State by tpia5: 9:44pm On Sep 27, 2011
the fallacy here is assuming ijaws arent edoid, imo.

ijaws are edoid, igboid, yoruboid, hausoid, middle beltoid, and whatever else you want to name.

their identity is fluid due to much mixing.

so, saying you're attacking ijaw on behalf of bini, is seriously flawed.

when two brothers are fighting, outsiders should think carefully before getting in the middle.

Hausas flee Lagos as ethnic violence leave a hundred dead[/size]

Hundreds of people are fleeing Nigeria's largest city, Lagos, in the wake of riots which are reported to have killed over 100 people.

Members of the minority Hausa community have left Lagos, in south-western Nigeria, and are heading for the nothern Hausa heartland.

Fighting broke out late on Thursday between members of Nigeria's two largest ethnic groups, the Yoruba - who form the majority in the south-west - and the Hausa, who dominate the north of the country.

The authorities in the northern city of Kano were reported to be preparing for possible fighting as Hausa people arrived from the south-west.

Kano, which has a substantial Yoruba minority, saw severe fighting in July, after Hausas fled there to escape violence in the south-western town of Sagamu.

Appeal for calm

In Lagos, Governor Bola Tinubu met leaders of both communities to appeal for calm, promising to guarantee the security of residents.

On Sunday, Hausa leaders said the community needed protection from the police and blamed a hardline Yoruba nationalist group, the Odua People's Congress (OPC), for the killings.

Armed police are patrolling the suburb of Keto where the unrest began, and have been working with community leaders to collect and bury the dead.

But they say they do not have sufficient numbers, or training, to properly control all the sensitive areas in the city.

Eyewitnesses who went to the scene on Sunday spoke of bodies still lying in the streets, in rubbish dumps or floating in streams.

They described hundreds of homes in ruins, and burned-out cars littering the streets.

The violence that erupted in a Lagos market on Thursday was the worst in a series of bloody incidents in Nigeria since military rule ended in May.

The trouble began when ethnic Hausa and Yoruba traders began fighting for control of a popular food market.

The clashes have led to renewed fears for the stability of Africa's most populous country.

the clothing you referred to on this thread [with photos, and not the itsekiri one], is traditional yoruba attire in addition to the agbada.

i just checked a 19th century drawing showing yorubas dressed like that.
