Ihuomadinihu: This is just hypothetical. What actually informed this assertion? How do you identify mixed families? How far back do you intend to search for mixed ancestry? How many Nigerian families have a record of foreign members? What sort of mixture are you referring to? Inter ethnic or Multi racial? Don't know how one will just land on nairaland and assume that all Nigerians are mixed without emprical backups. let me spell this out in plain language: It is highly, nay, extremely doubtful there is any Nigerian family that doesnt have at least one relative or member who is mixed with an outside ethnicity or race. Note: I did not say ancestor. How many Nigerian families have a record of foreign members? probably relatively few. However, that doesnt mean nobody is keeping track. |

no, I'm not referring to dna test "ancestry" but the real thing. And, I specifically mean Nigeria.
Most Nigerian families have at least one mixed relative at some point.
You might have to go far to find the person or persons, however.
In addition, my primary context is family, more than ancestry. Family as in descendants of a particular person or persons, among whom will be found at least one individual who is mixed. |

anonymous6: I don't think it is that simple, because it depends on what mix you are talking about; race, ethnicity/tribe and etc and also do you mean immediate family or distant family or ancestors. First of all it is obvious majority or almost all nigerian families are Black Nigerian, only a few families in Nigeria are Interracial marriages for example arab & Nigerian or White European & Nigerian so I disagree in the race part. When it comes to Ethnicity/Tribal for the most part people marry within their tribe then outside their tribe, thats why majority of families in Nigeria are of one tribe however mixed tribal marriages have increased but not big enough to make a difference plus have you forgotten that some Nigerians that do happen to be mixed traditionally claim their fathers tribe for identitiy but that old school rule is slowly changing. Distant family it depends and ancestors is debatable to a extent but ancestors are not direct families in the end of the day. So to me their are many Nigerian families with no mixed people in it. I think most Nigerian families who assume they have no mixed people, just havent looked far enough. I can almost guarantee they will find them if they do. The only exceptions would be if the family has been actively discouraging such unions since centuries ago, I doubt there's any such policy in the majority of Nigerian families. You'd have to be extremely militant, and even then. . . . . . . . . |
