Deputy Marriage Registrar, Jos North Local Government Council, Elizabeth Mangadi, has advised women on the need to obtain their marriage certificate, in case of divorce. Mangadi told the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday in Jos that women need the certificate to serve as legal documentation of their marriage in the event of divorce.
According to her, the certificate is a legal document that protects a woman and entitles her to a share of the husband’s property in case of divorce. She noted that women are most vulnerable in cases of divorce and therefore need some form of protection, which the certificate represents. “The certificate serves as one of the guarantees in a marriage that makes the woman a legal part of the man in the marriage and entitles her to the rights of inheritance. “Every woman should obtain and keep her certificate of marriage in a safe place. “Most women just go to the church for their wedding and ignorantly refuse to come to the registry to obtain marriage certificate,’’ she lamented. Mangadi said this often leaves women vulnerable at such times of a breakup, warning that most men are not concerned about the plight of women immediately after the marriage.
“Some men may go all the length and do anything to discourage their wives from taking them to the registry so that in the event of divorce, the women will not be entitled to a share of their property legally as a wife,” she said. She said the importance of the certificate to the woman could not be overemphasised, noting that the registry is involved in massive awareness campaign to sensitise women in the area to the issue.
Mangadi urged women whose marriages lac the certificate to talk their spouses into obtaining one, as it would cover the children upon the death of either spouse.

Guys I don't know what to do. I just came out of a Cybercafe, at Sango Ota, this afternoon to take a bike home when i stormed a young cute girl on a bike. Ordinarily, I don't like taking bike with two people because of personal comfort. But this girl couldn't be a left over to me, so immediately halted the bike so I could join her. The movement was interesting because of the body touch I give her from behind; though she seems innocent but I knew where i was going, then thinking how to get her contact. I even pretended like I was a stranger so I started asking her irrelevant questions about locations and local governments, tending to create familiarity with her (under 20). In short, I got her number, Pelumi by name, schooling in Ibadan Poly. I even went an extra mile giving her my complementary card, which carries my official details as a lawyer, though i needed money seriously (those working in Ogun State will understand). When I got home, I went to see whether she was on Whatsapp. Of course she was there and I felt good, only for me to see her status update as attached below. Mind , the status was updated two weeks ago. Abeg why are some girls like this? Not the picture, I mean the status.

I’ve heard so many comments and questions from people
including scholars and Christians, condemning lawyers,. One is
left in some doubt whether law was not recognized, indeed,
instituted by scripture. Often, you hear comments such as:
lawyers are liars; lawyers turn white to black and black to white;
lawyers do not know God; when lawyers die, they are buried
face-downwards so they don’t see God; no Lawyer can make
heaven. And many more comments like that.
One of days, I was on my way to Ekiti State, in the middle of a
conversation with a co-passenger, when I introduced myself as
a lawyer, he began to ask me so many questions like: “Do you
know all lawyers are liars?,” “lawyers can change white to
black,” “if you give a lawyer property to manage, na so so
English you go dey hear”, “what does it take to be a SAN?,” “am
I free to go to court and watch proceedings even if I don’t have
a case?,” ”Why do you call yourselves learned colleagues? Are
you saying we are not learned?,” “I no need lawyer because I no
want get case,” and the likes. The funniest of all the questions
was when I was asked, “Is it true that lawyers are buried upside
down? All I did throughout that journey was answering
questions and making clarities on erase the study ideas he had
about the legal profession.

* lawyers are not lies
My pastor in the middle of his sunday service sermon few
weeks back had posited that he disliked lawyers and judges
because almost all of them are atheists. He went on to say that
the enlightened mind of a lawyer or a judge is almost certainly
made up against the existence of God or a supernatural being
overseeing the affairs of sons and daughters of Adam.
According to the eloquent preacher of the gospel the
godlessness of these respected members of the bar and bench
in any given society gives rise to the generally-held view that
whenever a lawyer or judge dies and is being buried his or her
face is turned face-down in order not to see the sun, the
shining light of the universe.

* Lawyer’s Place in Heaven
This brief but precise write-up which is an examination of the
principle of fair hearing through the lens of scripture is one of
several series to show that virtually all reasonable modern laws
have their roots in the Holy Scripture (The Bible). Therefore, the
principle of fair hearing, its meaning, origin and application in
the scripture and how the popular natural justice principle of fair
hearing draws its strength from the scripture will be examined.
It is intended to illustrate that although man may not tolerate
lawyers (man never tolerated his fellow man either), God, who
put law in place and placed lawyers in charge of same, sure,
will, in my view, in HIS natural character give lawyers a fair
hearing on the last day.

Man has been a problem to God from inception of creation. Man
has never faithfully kept a simple instruction. Laws made by
God have hardly ever been obeyed by man, much less laws
made by fellow man, including those laws made by God’s
instructions. But, lawyers have been in the practice of assisting
God to manage man in man’s affairs on earth, ranging from
issues as high as how to become a president of a country to
issues as basic as how to get, keep and manage a wife and
children.
I Wish I could resist asking: if law meant nothing to God, would
HE take HIS time to arrange a heavenly assembly to enact the
Ten Commandments which HE handed over to Moses to
present to the people of Israel with the instruction that, same
would govern His relationship with His people? Subject to no
correction, there is nowhere in the scripture where it is stated
that the law is bad. Christ said ‘do not think that I came to
destroy the law or the Prophets; I did not come to destroy, but
to fulfill.’( Lk. 16:17).

The Bible says: ‘and it is easier for heaven and earth to pass
away than for one title of the law to fail’. In fact, to further
elucidate on this point, the trained lawyer servant himself, Paul,
says: ‘the law is good when used correctly.’ That is why there is
no iota of doubt if St. Paul, a lawyer, is in Heaven.
lawyers Are Buried Six Feet Not Twelve Feet Below The Ground
The phrase “six feet under” is always synonymous to death, but
have you ever wondered why a person’s grave should be dug at
a depth of six feet? Apparently, it all started during the 1655
bubonic plague in England. When the bubonic plague hit the
area, the mayor of London immediately issued a law on how to
properly deal with dead bodies to prevent the spread of
infection. It was then specified that the graves should be dug
“at least six feet deep.

Eventually, there was no need for a standard measurement of
the grave’s depth. The six feet under rule proved to be useless
at that time of the plague since it wasn’t really the dead that
spread the infection, but the fleas that carry the disease.
In Americas, the laws would differ from one state to another. In
some, coffins or burial vaults would only need 18 inches of
soil on top of them. So, even a grave that’s shallow as four feet
would be considered acceptable. There are even those that are
deeper than 12 feet and the reason for this is so that there will
be more space for other dead bodies to be placed in the same
grave – usually relatives or loved ones.
In modern standards for burial grounds, there is no need for the
grave to be six feet deep. In particular, flood-prone areas like
New Orleans in USA wouldn’t want their dead to follow the six
feet under rule, since it will only result to waterlogging and
coffins springing from the ground. Even up to the present day,
New Orleans faces this problem.

But really, how deep should the dead be buried? There’s no
universal measurement. Even in the UK, the decision is entirely
up to the owner, provided that the grave is deep enough so that
animals can’t dig it up and expose the body or coffins.It’s just
a matter of making sure the dead remains below the ground.
In conclusion, that law is central to God’s plan for the earth
(from where we prepare to go to heaven) is not in doubt. That
lawyers who are the ones trained to interpret and apply the law
are also central to God’s plan may not be in doubt, going from
the above analysis. What is not particularly clear is whether
every lawyer will make heaven just because law is central to
heaven’s plan. One thing I am sure of, is that no matter what
the case may be, God will give lawyers fair hearing.
It is submitted that after such fair hearing, and only after such
hearing, can the destination of the lawyer, just like the
destination of any person who dies, be determined. The first
sets of people to get to heaven, in my view, are lawyers IF with
emphases, IF and only IF lawyers assist God to manage man
here on earth.

The attention of the Nigerian Law School has been drawn to a
write up on social media by one Henrilynn Ibezim, an ex-student
of the institution. It is not the practice of the Nigerian Law
School as an institution to join issues with any writer who has
chosen to pursue official matters on social media. But in this
case; and to put the records straight in the interest of the
public, the facts as they relate to Mr.Ibezim are narrated below.

He was a candidate who was successful at the Bar Final
Examinations of August 2014. He along with other eligible
candidates were subsequently screened for Call to the Bar in
November 2014. However, while the screening exercise was on
going, a man (who was later identified as a car wash operator,
opposite the Nigerian Law School, Bwari premises),was found
distributing computer printed notices to other prospective
candidates, to the effect that those who needed extra invitation
cards for the ceremonies should call an indicated number for
procurement.

When he was quizzed by a Nigerian Law School Security Officer
on how he came about the notice, he responded that
Mr.Henrilynn Ibezim, a prospective candidate for Call to the Bar
ceremony, had sent him to distribute the notice. He was then
instructed to call Mr. Ibezim on telephone and inform him that
he had found some interested buyers, whom he should meet
near the School gate. He did put the call through and soon
thereafter, Mr. Ibezim drove to where he was, believing that he
had secured some prospective ‘customers’. On arrival, he
opened the boot of his vehicle and packs of forged Call to the
Bar invitation cards, identical to the cards being officially issued
to candidates, were found therein. Both of them were handed
over to the police as required by law.

The Body of Benchers (BOB),Nigeria, is the the statutory body
charged with the responsibility for the Call and admission of
eligible persons to the Bar. As a prerequisite for Call, the BOB
screens every candidate to determine their suitability. As
required of the Nigerian Law School by the BOB, a report of the
incident involving Mr Ibezim was made to the Screening
Committee of the body. After due consideration, the Body of
Benchers decided that the Call to the Bar of Mr Ibezim should
be put on hold, pending the determination of the allegation
against him.

Sometime in June 2016, the Nigerian Law school received a letter
from a law firm, forwarding the judgement of a Magistrate Court
discharging and acquitting Mr Ibezim of the offense charged. He
further demanded the release of his Call to the Bar certificate.
Not having been Called to the Bar, and since he is yet to be
issued with a Call to the Bar certificate by the Honourable Body
of Benchers, there was no certificate to release. The letter was
received after the closure of the screening exercise for the July
2016 Call to the Bar ceremonies, hence it could not be presented
to the BOB. His case was consequently scheduled for
presentation to the Screening Committee of the Body of
Benchers, for consideration at the next screening exercise in
November.

The Nigerian Law School trains and graduates thousands of
students each year for Call to the Nigerian Bar. The
management of the School did not deny Mr. Ibezim of his Call
to the Bar or the certificate thereon. His unexpected
involvement, being a student at the penultimate stage of being
admitted to the Nigerian Bar, in invitation cards scam was the
basis.

As noted before, the matter was promptly reported to the
Police, who proceeded with it accordingly. It is worthy of note
that the School and its functionaries were not privy to the
proceedings, the judgement of which was sent in by Mr.
Ibezim’s Lawyer. It is certainly not the doing of any staff of the
School that Mr Ibezim got himself entangled in the situation he
has found himself.
