Politics2023: Obasanjo’s Son Visited Me, Pledged Support For Osinbajo — Ojudu by treesun(op): 12:09pm On Jan 29, 2022
Olujonwo, son of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has pledged to support Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo (SAN) if he joins the 2023 presidential race.

The Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, Babafemi Ojudu, made this known in a Facebook post on Saturday.

According to Ojudu, Olujonwo visited him on Friday to register his wish that the VP should run for President in 2023.

Ojudu, who works in the VP’s office, wrote, “Olujonwo Obasanjo, son of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, visited yesterday (Friday).

“He too, like many others, came to register his wish and aspiration that Vice President Yemi Osinbajo throws his hat in the rings for the 2023 contest.

“Smart and brimming with ideas, he promised that if Osinbajo heeds the call of Nigerians he will be willing and ready to volunteer to join the campaign train.

“Thank you Olu. I will pass your message across.”

The PUNCH had reported that Ojudu said he had been receiving threat messages from “irritants” for declaring that he won’t support the presidential ambition of All Progressives Congress National Leader, Bola Tinubu.

Ojudu had stressed that his decision not to support Tinubu was based on personal conviction, adding that any coercion to do otherwise would not be democratic.

In an earlier statement, Ojudu had said that his refusal to support the presidential aspiration of the former Lagos State governor should not portray him as a betrayer.

“The idea that everyone who has related with Tinubu and disagrees with him on this Presidential bid is a traitor and a betrayal is puerile. Many of us, his associates, were not made by him as you also want the world to believe.

“We were already made before meeting him and in the cause of relating we gave one another a helping hand… So, on this matter of 2023 I wish him (Tinubu) well but I cannot in good conscience give him my support or cast my vote for him in the coming primary. It is my right. I am above 60 years of age for God sake. I almost died seeking this inalienable democratic rights, held up in detention and severally tortured. Your god is not my god,” he had said.

Osinbajo was Lagos Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General from 1999 to 2007 when Tinubu was governor.

Tinubu had reportedly nominated Osinbajo to be the running mate of Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd) in the buildup to the 2015 election.

Tinubu and Osinbajo was last seen together in public late 2021 when the former returned from the United Kingdom where he underwent surgery and therapy for knee surgery.

Though Tinubu subsequently declared his intention to run for the exalted office on January 10, 2022, Osinbajo has not declared whether he would be running or not but his supporters have been urging him to do so and mounting campaign billboards in strategic places all over the country.

FG feared subsidy protests could be worse than #EndSARS – Source

Details have emerged on how security advice forced the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd), to make a U-turn on the decision to remove fuel subsidy.

An impeccable security source told The PUNCH that intelligence handed over to the President by security officials showed that the protests that would have accompanied the subsidy removal might have been far worse than the #EndSARS demonstrations, mass protests against police brutality that grounded many parts of the country in 2020.

The official, who spoke to The PUNCH on strict condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak with the press, said the President was eager to implement the Petroleum Industry Act which would have ensured that subsidy was removed by June and investments in the oil sector increased.

He further stated that the government was afraid that such protests would have easily been hijacked by the opposition and affected the chances of the All Progressives Congress in next year’s election.

The official added, “The police, DSS, the National Intelligence Agency and the Office of the National Security Adviser usually send security reports to the President on the impact of sensitive issues like fuel subsidy. Reports given to the President showed that the protests being planned by unions would have been 10 times bigger than the #EndSARS protests.

“Petrol price was projected to increase to about N350 if the international price of oil continues to rise. This would have increased the cost of everything and encouraged everyone to take to the streets.

“They also drew the President’s attention to the coups sweeping many African countries and how the protests could have been hijacked by the opposition. This was why the President not only delayed subsidy removal but transferred the responsibility to the next government.”

Former President Goodluck Jonathan had in 2012 faced a similar challenge when he removed petrol subsidy forcing the price to rise from N65 per litre to N140.

The incident sparked protests in several parts of the country especially in Lagos where thousands converged on Ojota for over a week, grounding commercial activities in the country’s commercial capital.

“Some ministers actually advised the President to go ahead with subsidy removal because of the potential investments that deregulation would bring. But the President could not have taken such advice. The country is currently facing insecurity in several states, people are hungry. Outright removal of subsidy would have led to a rise in the cost of goods and protests. The alternative given to the President is to increase fuel price slightly. This could be done gradually by adding N3 or N5 periodically,” he said.

When one of our correspondents called the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, on the phone on Thursday for a reaction, he declined making any comments on the issue

But, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, had in an interview on Channels Television’s ‘Sunrise Daily’ programme on Wednesday, said subsidy removal would have forced Nigeria into a tailspin.

Adesina added, “If that subsidy had been removed, it would have been a show of will that we want to solve this problem (oil fraud). There was a will but if you have a will and what you want to do will upturn the system, throw the country into a tailspin, then you would have to reconsider, you will weigh it. That is why further consultations will still happen.”

The Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union had last year said it would on Thursday (yesterday) and February 2 embarked on nationwide protests against government’s plan to remove fuel subsidy.

But on Tuesday, the union shelved the protests following government decision to shift fuel subsidy removal by 18 months and amend the Petroleum Act, whose implementation was earlier scheduled to start in June.

Reps to summon major oil marketers, transporters, Customs, others
Meanwhile, the House of Representatives, on Thursday, adopted two motions to institutionalise an earlier order by the Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila, for an investigation of the current state of Nigeria’s four refineries and the actual volume of petrol being consumed by the country daily.

Gbajabiamila had earlier on Wednesday ordered separate probes into the issues, setting up ad hoc committees to carry out the tasks.

The Speaker had stated that the facts must first be made available before the Federal Government takes decisions on the subsidy being paid on petroleum products.

On Thursday, two motions were moved and adopted based on Gbajabiamila’s order.

The Minority Leader, Ndudi Elumelu, titled ‘Need to Ascertain the Actual Daily Consumption of Premium Motor Spirit in Nigeria.’

Elumelu said, “The House notes the concerns of Nigerians over the recurring incidence of fuel scarcity. The House is concerned about the huge sums of money being paid as subsidies and the controversies it has been generating.

“The House is worried that it may not be possible to ascertain the actual sums of subsidy required and being paid without accurate data of the daily consumption of Premium Motor Spirit in Nigeria;

“The House acknowledges that when such data is generated, it will enhance effective planning, supply and distribution of the said product to Nigerians.”

Adopting the motion, the House asked an ad hoc committee, which Gbajabiamila set up earlier on Wednesday, to “investigate the actual daily consumption of premium motor spirit in Nigeria and report back within eight weeks for further legislative action.”

Similarly, Ademorin Kuye moved a motion titled ‘Need to Ascertain the Actual Cost of Rehabilitation of Nigerian Refineries,’ noting the non-functionality and deplorable state of the nation’s refineries.

Kuye said, “The House also notes that several billions of dollars of taxpayer’s money have been expended into the Turn Around Maintenance and rehabilitation of the nation’s refineries without any productive outcome.

“The House observes that past government efforts have been sabotaged by variation costs from partners or lack of proper project costing and analysis.

“The House is cognisant of the government’s intention to commence another phase of rehabilitation of the refineries and if proper steps are not taken, the country may be plunged into repeating past mistakes.”

Adopting the motion, the House asked the other committee to “ascertain the actual cost of rehabilitating the Nigerian Refineries and report back within six weeks for further legislative action.”

A top legislator told The PUNCH on Thursday that major oil marketers and transporters would be summoned by the panel in order to provide an insight into how much petrol Nigeria consumed in a day.

The lawmaker said the House was not satisfied with the estimates provided by the NNPC. He said the ad hoc committee would work as transparently as possible.

The lawmaker, who wished to remain anonymous, said, “The committee will summon major marketers to disclose how much petrol they buy from NNPC and how much they sell on the average. We will also be inviting stakeholders in the transport sector to explain how much their members spend on petrol on a daily basis.

“We cannot believe NNPC’s claim that Nigeria consumes over 65 million litres a day is outrageous. All of them will be summoned to explain what is happening. We also hope to summon customs and others to explain how petrol is being smuggled out of the country. Are tankers going through bush paths?”

In a related development, marketers of Premium Motor Spirit, popularly called petrol, on Thursday promised to cooperate with the National Assembly as it moves to investigate the actual volume of PMS consumed in Nigeria.

According to them, NNPC, being the only importer of petrol into Nigeria, has been the one providing figures on the volume of petrol consumed in Nigeria over the years.

The marketers also told The PUNCH that the queues for petrol in Abuja and neighbouring states of Nasarawa and Niger were due to panic buying by consumers.

Speaking through the President, Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria, Billy Gillis-Harry, the oil dealers stated that it was important for the National Assembly to ascertain the actual volume of petrol consumed nationwide.

“We will cooperate with them if they call us legitimately and the information we will give to them will be used for the benefit of Nigeria,” Gillis-Harry said.

He added, “We are aware of the move by the lawmakers concerning this issue and we think it is in the right direction. So it is something that will get our cooperation as soon as they contact us.”

Asked whether there were issues with the Pipelines Product Marketing Company, a subsidiary of NNPC, and if this was affecting the supply of petrol, considering the queues in Abuja and neighbouring states, he replied, “That is not correct. PPMC/NNPC is trying to ensure supply.

“The queues are basically because people have been involved in panic buying. When announcements were made that the subsidy might be removed and petrol price would increase, people started buying fuel in their cars and taking it home

“And this is very dangerous because it can burn down the building. I’ve been able to consult with my national officers in different depots and there is no issue at the PPMC that is affecting supplies. So it is just panic buying.”

World Bank, IMF may decline Nigeria’s loan request over fuel subsidy
The World Bank and the International Monetary Fund may decline loan requests from Nigeria, as the Federal Government shuns their advice on fuel subsidy removal.

In a report on August 17, 2020, Reuters quoted sources as saying that the World Bank was unlikely to approve a much-needed $1.5bn for Nigeria in August as planned due to concerns over desired reforms.

It said the World Bank, which had said Nigeria could be heading towards its greatest fiscal crisis in 40 years, had aimed to bring the loan to its board for approval last month, but the sources said negotiations over what Nigeria would do to secure it were incomplete.

Reuters said fuel subsidies and electricity tariffs were being discussed.

In November 2021, the World Bank stressed the need for the government to remove the fuel subsidy. It urged the government to remove the costly petrol subsidy within the next three-to-six months.

According to the World Bank, further delay in removing the fuel subsidy, described as a major drain and waste on the economy, could see the federal and state governments unable to pay salaries from 2022.

In its November edition of the Nigeria Development Update, the multilateral institution, said, “Urgent priorities for the next three to six months include reducing inflation, improving exchange-rate management, mobilising additional oil and nonoil revenues, eliminating the PMS subsidy and redirecting expenditures towards targeted cash transfers and other priority investments, fostering competitive markets, and improving infrastructure.”

In June 2021, an IMF team led by Ms. Jesmin Rahman via a statement issued after a virtual meeting with the Nigerian authorities, expressed concerns about the resurgence of fuel subsidies.

According to the statement, the team reiterated the importance of introducing a market-based fuel pricing mechanism.

The statement read in part, “The mission expressed its concern with the resurgence of fuel subsidies. It reiterated the importance of introducing market-based fuel pricing mechanism and the need to deploy well-targeted social support to cushion any impact on the poor.”

In November 2021, the IMF also advised the Nigerian government to completely remove fuel and electricity subsidies in early 2022.

The Washington-based organisation noted that the removal of fuel and electricity subsidies should be considered a priority as part of the government’s fiscal policy.

It said this after its official staff visit to the country under the Article IV Mission.

“The complete removal of regressive fuel and electricity subsidies is a near-term priority, combined with adequate compensatory measures for the poor. The mission stressed the need to fully remove fuel subsidies and move to a market-based pricing mechanism in early 2022 as stipulated in the 2021 Petroleum Industry Act.

“In addition, the implementation of cost-reflective electricity tariffs as of January 2022 should not be delayed. Well-targeted social assistance will be needed to cushion any negative impacts on the poor particularly in light of still elevated inflation,” the statement read in part.

The IMF also noted that Nigeria’s past experiences with fuel subsidy removal, which have all been short lived and reversed, emphasized the importance of building a consensus and improving public trust on the protection of the poor and efficient and transparent use of the saved resources.

The IMF had on April 28 approved Nigeria’s request for emergency financial assistance of $3.4bn to support the country’s efforts in addressing the severe economic impact of the COVID-19 shock and the sharp fall in oil prices.

The Washington-based fund also published the country’s letter of intent in a detailed report released on April 29.

In the letter, the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Mrs Zainab Ahmed, and the Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele, pledged that fuel subsidy would not return.

“The recent introduction and implementation of an automatic fuel price formula will ensure fuel subsidies, which we have eliminated, do not reemerge,” the Federal Government told the IMF in the letter dated April 21, 2020.

However, the Nigerian government has backtracked on this pledge and shunned recommendations from the World Bank and IMF.

In August 2021, there was a report that Nigeria would receive $3.35bn as its share of the IMF $650bn special drawing rights to help boost the liquidity of member countries.

Also, in April 2021, the Senate approved the sums of $1.5bn and €995m external loans for the Federal and state governments.

The Nigeria Governors’ Forum and the Nigeria Labour Congress on Wednesday took a swipe at the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation over what they described as the mismanagement of the fuel subsidy regime.

The NGF and the NLC, according to a statement by the forum’s Head, Media and Public Affairs, Abdulrazaque Bello-Barkindo, said this as part of the resolutions of their meeting in Abuja. They particularly doubted the NNPC’s fuel consumption figure.

As labour leaders and state governors berated the NNPC, the Federal Government disclosed that the corporation had submitted a N3tn budget to finance fuel subsidy in 2022.

Also on Wednesday, the House of Representatives said it would probe daily consumption of petrol and the state of the nation’s four refineries.

The Federal Government had on Tuesday suspended its plan to remove fuel subsidy in June. It also shifted the implementation of the Petroleum Industry Act by 18 months.

Reviewing the recent developments in the oil industry, the NGF and labour leaders agreed that the gap in the subsidy removal agenda was “hidden in the untruth bandied by the administrators of the subsidy.”

They noted the NNPC was the forefront of the mismanagement of the proceeds accrued therein.

Bello-Barkindo, in his statement, disclosed that the Chairman of the NGF, Kayode Fayemi, argued that the nation’s economy was at the precipice and that it had become necessary for the two groups to verify NNPC’s estimates carefully.

“Fayemi told the labour leaders that subsidy removal had remained an ongoing conversation not just among governors but the country at large and emphasised that governors could not but be part of the solution providers in this onerous task that is confronting the nation.

“There are raging questions of accountability associated with subsidy removal in the country and observed that the NGF and the NLC can jointly work together to proffer solutions that heal the economy and provide succour to the Nigerian people.

There is a lot of fraud in consumption and distribution figures – Fayemi
“We need a partnership with the NLC to confront the challenges of what the NNPC is about… because there is a lot of fraud in the consumption and distribution figures that the country is getting and we can only move forward if the NLC engages all those who are knowledgeable in the field like PENGASSAN (Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria) to conduct a thorough research into the sector before any further action is taken on subsidy.”

Only eight states benefiting directly from fuel subsidy – Fayemi
According to Fayemi, only about eight states benefit directly from the subsidy, while all the others have to contend with the issues by themselves.

The Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki, who joined the meeting virtually, warned that Nigeria could either continue acting like Santa Claus or take concrete actions rather than wasting away N3tn on subsidy. He said the country would do well if it revamped the power sector, virtually comatose.

Subsidy regime shrouded in secrecy – NLC, TUC
The NLC president Ayuba Waba, and his counterpart from the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, Quadri Olaleye, expressed concerns as to why the subsidy issue had always been shrouded in secrecy on the part of the government.

The union leaders faulted the conflicting figures from managers of the petroleum sector, calling it objectionable.

Meanwhile, in an interview on Channels Television’s ‘Sunrise Daily’ programme on Thursday, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, said subsidy removal would have forced Nigeria into a tailspin.

Adesina added, “If that subsidy had been removed, it would have been a show of will that we want to solve this problem (oil fraud). There was a will but if you have a will and what you want to do will upset the system, throw the country into a tailspin, then you would have to reconsider, you will weigh it. That is why further consultations will still happen.”

The President’s spokesman, however, said the decision was based on the need to ameliorate the sufferings of Nigerians and not the 2023 elections.

FG puts petrol consumption at 65.7 million litres daily, proposes N3tn for 2022 subsidy
Adesina stated this as the Federal Government proposed a N3tn budget to meet the funding provisions of the incremental fuel subsidy request in the 2022 appropriation act.

The Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Dr Zainab Ahmed, disclosed this on Wednesday to State House Correspondents after the week’s virtual Federal Executive Council meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

She the NNPC had submitted a N3tn budget for subsidy for 2022.

According to Ahmed, only N443bn is currently available in the 2022 budget meant to cater for petrol subsidy from January to June, but considering the prevailing economic realities, the council had proposed a year-long provision for the subsidy.

She said council considered the proposal and directed her ministry to approach the National Assembly for an amendment to the fiscal framework and the budget.

The minister stated, “We also presented to council today a request for council’s consideration to make additional funding provisions to enable us to meet incremental fuel subsidy request in the 2022 budget. You’ll recall that in the 2022 budget, as appropriated, we have made a provision of N443bn for a subsidy for January to June.

“Having taken into account the current realities; increased hardship in the population, heightened inflation, and also that the measures that needed to be taken to enable a smoother exit from the fuel subsidy are not yet in place, council agreed that it is desirable to exit fuel subsidy.

“The Nigerian National Petroleum Company has presented to the ministry a request for N3tn as fuel subsidy for 2022. What this means is that we have to make an incremental provision of N2.557tn to be able to meet the subsidy requirement, which is averaging about N270bn per month.”

She said in 2021, the actual under-recovery that had been charged to the Federation was N1.2tn, which meant an average of N100bn, but in 2022, because of the increased crude oil price per barrel in the global market, now at $80 per barrel, and also because NNPC’s assessment was that the country was consuming 65.7 million litres per day. The incremental cost would, therefore, be N3tn in 2022.”

Meanwhile, the FEC approved amendments to parts of the 2022 Budget, which the National Assembly had initially adjusted during its legislative deliberations on the budget proposal submitted to it by the President in 2021.

According to Ahmed, the approved amendment to be transmitted to the National Assembly will request to repeal clauses 10 and 11 concerning the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit operations in the 2022 budget and restore what the lawmakers had deleted, amounting to N103bn.”

Responding to questions around how the planned N3tn subsidy budget would be funded, the minister said, “We’ll have to reduce it (the cost of subsidy) from that N3tn and that is one. Secondly, also we have been running reconciliations with the NNPC to minimise the cost, but also we have several reconciliations with the NNPC, and NNPC itself owed, in some cases, government.

Reps sets up panel to determine daily fuel consumption, state of refineries
In a related development, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, on Wednesday, ordered investigations into the actual volume of petrol consumed daily in Nigeria and the current state of the four national refineries.

Gbajabiamila stated that the facts must first be made available before the Federal Government takes decisions on the subsidy being paid on petroleum products.

The Speaker consequently set up two ad hoc committees to separately investigate the daily consumption of fuel and state of the refineries.

Gbajabiamila partly said, “It is going to be painstaking and it is going to be through. What exactly is the state of our refineries and what do we need to bring our refineries back to maximum use? Those two things have to be determined before we get to the issue of fuel subsidy. So, I will set up a very tight ad hoc committee of 12 members for each of those two (issues).”

The Speaker eventually appointed 14 members to each of the panels.

He said, “One will look into how much fuel we consume as a nation on a daily basis. We have had figures bandied here and there without any authenticity. Before we can even begin to talk about subsidies, like I said, we need to know how much we are consuming. The second is to look into refineries and state of repair and determine what will be needed to bring our refineries back to life again.”

Gbajabiamila asked the panels to go all out in getting their jobs done, especially on daily fuel consumption.

“I restricted the number to 14 (members) and that committee has four weeks to present its report. In doing their work, they should not restrict themselves to NNPC figures, as NNPC being an interested party, of course.”

States won’t tolerate continuous FAAC deduction – Delta Finance Commissioner
The Commissioner for Finance Delta State, Mr Fidelis Tilije said state governments would not continue to tolerate the deduction of funds at the Federation Accounts Allocation Committee.

Tilije who stated this in an interview with The PUNCH on Wednesday in Asaba, called on the NLC to as a matter of urgency demand for exact litres of fuel being consumed per day.

He urged Nigerians to interrogate the Federal Government and the NNPC to give exact litres of fuel being consumed per day.

He said, “Now, everybody is shouting subsidy. Nobody is able to question exactly where these subsidies are being paid to. Who are the people consuming the fuel?

“All the funds we have spent to revive our refineries, what has happened to them? Has anybody got to check how corruption is taking away the funds? Why are refineries not working?

“When this government told us that it was going to revive our four refineries in Nigeria, why haven’t it been able to revive just one or two? That is the point we are making.

“The truth is that as the price of crude oil goes up in the market, and then, you import the refined one, you will be paying double of what you are exporting.

“The truth is that we are not able to ascertain whether we are paying the actual subsidy we are consuming. All we are doing now is that NNPC will just sit down and tell us this amount of subsidy we are going to pay next month and they will deduct the money.

“Who is questioning them. Who is checking? We will not tolerate this act. We will continue to engage them. Can’t they block all the loopholes?” Once we get all these done , the issue of subsidy will no longer be there.”

Nigeria risks bankruptcy as fuel subsidy continues, experts warn
An economist and the Managing Director of Cowry Asset Management, Johnson Chukwu in a phone interview with The PUNCH declared that the country risked bankruptcy if the subsidy being paid on fuel continued.

He noted that the removal of fuel subsidy was an inevitable and necessary evil that must be implemented, either by the present regime or the next administration.

He said, “Well certainly the implication of the subsidy continuing is that the country will go bankrupt in the near future.”

A development expert, Dr Ilyasu Aliyu criticised the decision of the government to continue paying fuel subsidy for the next 18 months, stating that this would lead to a reduced revenue for critical infrastructure, increase external debt and deplete the nation’s foreign reserves.

“I am in support of the subsidy removal because it is an evil being postponed for the future, and this decision is basically a political decision and not for economic interest. If you told Nigerians that you would remove subsidy during your tenure then you should and you left our refineries non-functional, why is this so?”

On its part, the Coalition of Northern Groups urged the Federal Government not to consider removing fuel subsidy.

Rather, the coalition of 52 northern groups, asked the government to stop fuel smuggling and revamp the nation’s refineries.

The CNG Director (Strategic Communications), Samaila Musa, made the coalition’s position known in a statement on Wednesday titled “CNG welcomes retention of fuel subsidy in 2022.”

Femi Adesina must have thought Nigerians are fools.

The timing is not right yet the government is already making out of budget arrangements to replace fuel subsidy with 5000 transport grants for 40m Nigerians that make up the poorest population of the country.
They think everyone is imbeciles like them. Not thinking before speaking!

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, has said the Federal Government didn’t suspend the removal of fuel subsidy because of the 2023 elections.

Adesina said this when he appeared on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily programme, on Wednesday.

“It is a valid thing [to do],” he said of the government’s suspension of the removal, adding, “but is this done because of elections next year? No.”

“It is done because as the minister (of finance) stated, the timing is not auspicious, inflation is still high. In the past eight months, we saw inflation reducing but the last month, it went up again; further consultations need to happen with all the stakeholders.”

Adesina also stated that the intention of the Federal Government to extend the removal of fuel subsidy by 18 months was not to set a booby-trap for the next president.

“That was not the intention, the intention was also stated – the timing is not right, it will exacerbate the hardship of the people and the President genuinely cares,” the presidential spokesman said.

“Politics is a part of our lives, but elections will just be one event in the life of the country. When elections come, they go, the country continues. This fuel subsidy, whether it stays or goes, is going to have a serious impact on the economy.”

PoliticsPDP W’ll Form Better Govt In 2023, Says Ortom by treesun(op): 9:20am On Jan 26, 2022
Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, has boasted that the opposition Peoples Democratic Party will form the government at the national level come 2023.

Speaking at a meeting with the party’s governorship aspirants at the Government House, Makurdi, on Monday, the governor said when the PDP reclaims power, it would continue from where it left governance in 2015.

Ortom declared that the PDP had ample opportunity to return to power with the abysmal performance of the All Progressives Congress government.

He explained that Nigerians were fed up with the APC, the party he said came to power through deceit, propaganda and lies.

He said, “I want to assure you that by the grace of God, the PDP is going to take over the mantle of leadership at the national level, because clearly from what we are seeing in Nigeria today, the APC has become a failure.

“They came on the platform of deceit, lies and propaganda. It takes two to tango. People saw what the PDP was able to do and today, they have seen what the APC is doing.

“What was the PDP doing – security of lives and property, economic development, reduction in unemployment and ensuring free movement in Nigeria.

“Today, under the leadership of the APC, what are we seeing? Economically, the dollar used to be N190, but it is now being sold for N590. We used to hear of Boko Haram in Borno, but today, Boko Haram is in Benue State; it is in the North-Central, South-South, South-West, South-East and even worst in the North-West.

“Today, some states in the North-East are being controlled by Boko Haram. Why did I say this? The governors themselves have confirmed this. Even in the North-Central, there are some states that are controlled by Boko Haram. It wasn’t so in 2015 when the APC took over.

“So, are we going to continue in this manner? Do we want to be Afghanistan? Do we want Afghanistan to extend its frontiers to Nigeria? Our country is gradually subjecting itself and giving itself to terrorists and surrendering to terrorists.”

He added, “If parts of the North-East have been conquered by terrorists and parts of the North-West have been conquered by terrorists, and even now as we hear, some parts of the North-Central have been conquered by terrorists, are we going to allow it to come to Benue State?

“You people should tell me, because I’m your governor; if you want me to surrender to terrorists, I will do it.”

Ortom observed that the open grazing being canvassed by the Federal Government was a camouflage.

He stated, “It is a lie; it is a programme designed in the international Fulani world to take over and seize our land, manipulate us and make us slaves.

“We are looking for when the PDP will continue from where it stopped in 2015 and provide leadership for economic growth and take possession of employment and reduce unemployment in our country.”

The governor argued that the treaty signed by the APC government in 2021 to allow free trade and movement was a wrong step, saying that it would only make Nigeria a dumping ground.

“I was the minister of Industry, Trade and Investment under Goodluck Jonathan; I attended meetings in Ghana, in Germany and other parts of the world. They persuaded us and we said no, we were not going to sign, because as Nigerians with a population of over 200 million, signing that agreement would mean other smaller countries would dump their products on Nigeria,” Ortom added.
