@NAIRATREND.COM.NG Air Peace at the weekend boosted its regional operations with the introduction of night flights out of Lagos, Accra, Banjul and Dakar. A statement signed by the carrier’s Corporate Communications Manager, Mr. Chris Iwarah quoted the Chief Operating Officer, Mrs. Oluwatoyin Olajide as saying the new flights were part of the airline’s strategy to make air travel on the West Coast of Africa seamless and more beneficial. Olajide described the night flights, which commenced from the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos on Sunday, as a relief for business and leisure travellers on the West Coast looking to utilize their trips to transact their business unrushed. “We keep reviewing our regional operations in line with our promise to provide seamless, on-time and comfortable flight services. Whatever the travel needs of our esteemed guests, we want to be able to provide a service that fits their plans. “We have been operating on the West Coast of Africa for more than a year and a half. One thing we have come to realize is that a lot of persons like to travel at night and get to their destinations on time to do their transactions in a calm, unhurried and fruitful manner. This is the interest we are catering to with the introduction of night flights. We want our valued guests to arrive at their destinations, go about their business as they wish and still have enough time to prepare for their return trips. “This is just the beginning of the new innovations and win-win travel options we are bringing to air travel on the West Coast of Africa. We value our guests and are always ready to make our flight schedules and timings as comfortable as possible for them”, she said. Speaking on the development, a passenger on the night flight from Dakar to Lagos, Nchang Damarisambem said the option met her desire to arrive Lagos on time and continue her onward journey to Calabar for her transaction. The flight, she said, was a pleasant experience. She pleaded with Air Peace to extend its operations to Yaounde, Cameroun, her country to give the people an opportunity of experiencing its spectacular flight services. Another passenger on the Dakar-Lagos flight, Turay Fatmataba said she preferred the night option for long-distance travel. She said the night flight was an easier option for her to get to Freetown, her final destination. GIST VIA - https://nairatrend.com.ng/air-peace-deepens-regional-operations-with-night-flights/

While declaring open the National technical committee meeting of the event, Governor of Rivers State, His Excellency, Barrister Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, represented by his deputy, Dame Mrs. Ipalibo Harry Banigo, promised to do everything humanly possible to make this year’s event an unforgettable experience in terms of packaging to meet international standards. Hosting a delegation from the National Council for Arts and Culture, Mrs. Ipalibo stated that an event as important as NAFAST goes beyond celebration. “Culture is a veritable tool upon which the strength of any given community can be sold to the international community and as such we are going to make this year’s NAFEST a festival with a positive difference,” Harry Banigo said. She warmly welcomed all the visitors and charged them to feel free and enjoy all the good things provided by the state government. One of the best places for night life, natural cuisine and peaceful atmosphere any time of the year, said the governor, is Rivers State. “Rivers State has a very secure and safe atmosphere for all to work and relax without intimidation or harassment of any kind contrary to the negative impression the state has been subjected to by some fifth columnists. She thanked the National Council for Arts and Culture for choosing the state above all other states that bided for the hosting, promising that Rivers State government will not take the opportunity for granted. The Director-General of National Council for Arts and Culture, Otunba Segun Runsewe, who is also the President of the World Craft Center, African Region, thanked His Excellency, Nyesom Ezenmo Wike and the good people of Rivers State for accepting to host this year’s NAFEST slated to hold from 21st – 27 October 2018. According to Otunba Runsewe, “there cannot be a better time and way to celebrate ourselves in a positive light than this type of event.” As the custodian of culture in Nigeria, Otunba Runsewe said, choosing Rivers State for such an important national event can only be seen as apt and timely. He assured the guests in advance that this year’s festival is going to witness free eye tests, Waste to Wealth, Free Skills Acquisition and other features. Otunba Runsewe added that for over 31 states in Nigeria set to participate in the forth coming NAFEST in Rivers State shows that the event is already moving to the next level. He also said with Port Harcourt being a state symbolically referred to as Nigeria’s treasure base and home of culture and tourism, this year’s NAFAST can only be seen as a done deal. He urged other state governors to emulate Governor Wike’s kind gestures. GIST VIA - https://nairatrend.com.ng/rivers-state-set-to-make-history-with-nafest-2018/

@NAIRATREND.COM.NG Federal government has been urged to pay a minimum wage of N100, 000 to the least officer in the Nigeria police - Advocacy for Better Welfare of Nigeria Police said this will ensure quality service delivery - President of the group said that it had become imperative to sanitise and rebrand Nigeria Police through improved welfare An NGO, Advocacy for Better Welfare of Nigeria Police, on Sunday, September 2, canvassed a minimum wage of at least N100, 000 for the least officer in the Nigeria Police to ensure quality service delivery. Solomon Bankole, the president of the group, who made the appeal in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, said that it had become imperative to sanitise and rebrand Nigeria Police through improved welfare. According to him, the time has come to improve the condition of service of police officers to get the best out of them. “It has become imperative to update and upwardly review the monthly salary of all officers, rank and file with a minimum of N100,000 for the least officer. “We must advocate for improved policies and continuous review of such policies to hold the police accountable for better services and respect for human rights,” Bankole said. The president, who called for proper discipline for all officers to serve with integrity, urged the federal government to prioritise regular provision of kits and motivations for the police. He said the annual budgetary allocation expected to take care of the welfare of officers and rank and file of the Nigeria Police should be disbursed for its purposes as expected. “For Nigerians to have a better society, there is a need for better police. Policing is a special duty and that is the reason for our campaign for better welfare package for police officers. “There won’t be a change in the image of Nigeria Police and public perception with poor remuneration, lack of kits and other equipment designed to make the work efficient. “With good pay, necessary kits and other equipment and motivation, most of the police misconducts and abuses will be reduced,” Bankole said. According to him, the group will not relent on its calls for strict discipline, adherence to rule of law, human rights protection and quest for international best practices in policing. He urged the government to be committed to removing hatred, disrepute, public hostility and loss of confidence in the police through improved welfare package. “We are advocating for respect of rule of law and human rights of all Nigerians and foreign nationals in Nigeria. “We are also advocating for improved policies and continuous review of such policies to hold the police accountable for better services and respect for human rights. “Our group have strong belief in the sacrificial journey to sanitise and rebrand the image of Nigeria Police,” the president said. Meanwhile, it was reported that some businessmen in the Ikeja area of Lagos state reportedly claimed that operatives of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (F-SARS) allegedly tortured and extorted money from them for what they knew nothing about. The three men claimed that they were illegally detained for days during which they were brutalised. GIST VIA - https://nairatrend.com.ng/pay-n100000-minimum-wage-to-police-officers-group/

@NAIRATREND.COM.NG The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has faulted President Muhammadu Buhari over his comments about Nigerians making attempt to enter Europe illegally through the desert and the Mediterranean. In a statement on Saturday by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr Kola Ologbondiyan, the party asked the President to solve the problem rather than making such comments. “The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says President Muhammadu Buhari’s statement to German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, that Nigerians caught up in their attempt to illegally enter Europe, are on their own, further exposes him as an insensitive leader, who cares less about the plights of his compatriots,” the statement said. It added, “While the PDP does not, in any way, support illegal migrations, our party holds that such does not warrant incendiary statement against our citizens by no less a person than the President, who should be seeking for ways to solve the problem.” On Friday, President Buhari told the German Chancellor during her visit to Nigeria that his administration does not support anything illegal. He had also said, “Anybody who feels that his country does not value him or offer him what he should be offered as a citizen, and decides to defy the desert and the Mediterranean is doing it at his own risk.” The PDP condemned the statement and decried the attacks on Nigerians living abroad, including those with legitimate documents and engaged in lawful activities. It claimed that it was the failure of the present administration that prompted citizens of the country to embark on such a perilous journey in search of greener pastures. “Is it not disturbing to Mr President that reports by Nigerian Immigration Services showed that many more Nigerians have been trapped in detention and slave camps in various parts of the world?” the party question. It, however, said it was the duty of the President, as an elected leader of government, to pursue the fundamental human rights of his citizens. The PDP also asked the President to find a solution to the problems purportedly pushing Nigerians to resort to illegal migration as an option for survival, irrespective of the huge risks involved. It accused the All Progressives Congress (APC) led Federal Government of worsening the nation’s economy, stressing that Nigerians would not be seeking for greener pastures in other lands if that was not the case. “It has, therefore, become clearer that there is no way our nation can survive another four years under a leadership such as the Buhari-led APC administration, hence the determination by Nigerians to rally on the platform of the repositioned PDP to throw up a competent President to effectively pilot the affairs of our nation, come 2019,” the opposition party said. @NAIRATREND.COM.NG President Muhammadu Buhari on Saturday arrived Beijing to attend the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation holding between September 3 and 4. During the six-day official visit of the Nigerian President, he is expected to join his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, to witness the signing of an agreement on the National Information and Communication Technology Infrastructure Backbone Phase 11 between Galaxy Backbone Limited and Huawei Technologies Limited (HUAWEI) at the cost of $328m facility provided by the Chinese EXIM Bank. According to a statement by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the bank facility is for the development of NICTIB 11 project which he said was consistent with the current administration’s commitment to incorporating the development of ICT into national strategic planning under the National Economic Recovery and Growth Plan. Shehu said the President and his Chinese host would also witness the signing of the MOU on One Belt One Road Initiative. The presidential spokesman recalled that in 2013, the Chinese leader proposed the initiative of building the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road, with a view to integrating the development strategies of partner countries. The statement read, “During the High-Level Dialogue between Chinese and African Leaders and Business representatives on the margins of FOCAC, the Nigerian delegation is also expected to sign no fewer than 25 MOUs, including those proposed by the Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission , Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation , and Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture. “Earlier, the President on arrival at Capital International Airport, Beijing at about 9.04 am (Nigerian time), was received by top Chinese government officials including the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Dr Zhou Pingjian. @NAIRATREND.COM.NG Dr Michael Olawale-Cole, formerly intending to be governor of Lagos State on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, has left the party for the All Progressives Congress. Olawale-Cole said his decision was informed by what he described as impressive performance of President Muhammadu Buhari and Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State. In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Saturday in Abuja, he said that he had formally joined the APC and registered at ward `A’ Onigbongbo, Ikeja, Lagos State. He explained further that his defection was influenced by the “infrastructural development, transparency in governance and accountability of Buhari and Ambode.’’ “I have examined the way the country is going, and from my findings, it appears to me that supporting Buhari is the best choice we have at the moment. “After being a member of the PDP for years and running for the governorship ticket of the party in 2007 in Lagos state, it was evident that the APC is different. “From what the president is doing in the fight against corruption and the issue of transparency in governance via Treasury Single Account and others, he must be encouraged by men of goodwill. “I have been in government before as a Commissioner for Finance and later for Works and Transport, Lagos State, we can see what the APC is doing differently, this government has a chance in the area of probity and transparency.” He, however, noted that “there are still some shady deals among government officials but once the leadership is upright, the followers will do same.’’ Olawale-Cole said that the decision to pitch his tent with the APC took him two years, observing that the decision was taken after critical analyses of the situation of things in politics. “I find it difficult to find anyone with equal standing in integrity, honesty, and probity with Buhari. “Of course, there are inadequacies, but with time, the president and his Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo will give us a better tomorrow and protecting our commonwealth,” he said.
